overviewGLOBAL ENERGY REQUIREMENTS are increasingly met with renewable resources. PV’s growth has been fueled by many factors including continual efficiency improvements, lower module costs and greater quality control. While leading analysts foresee renewable energy’s dominance of industrial and residential segments by mid-century, 2020 was hardly business as usual. All major global PV markets expanded, but the establishment of tariffs for China-made PV modules impacted most manufacturers based there. China put the brakes mid-year on its own expansion plans, but other markets filled the gap, helping 2020 end on an optimistic note. 2020 holds some fascinating possibilities. Module prices remain relatively low, while efficiencies continue to rise. One of the biggest technological changes occurring in manufacturing in 2020 was more emphasis on efforts to bring bifacial cell technology to market, with most major manufacturers either having some bifacial products or studying market entry. Another interesting development was the rise of tandem solar cells that capitalize on perovskite technology. Oxford PV, one of the true pioneers of higher-efficiency perovskites, began pilot line work with German manufacturing partners; commercial-grade modules are

expected in 2020. With efficiencies standing at 27.3 percent in mid-2020, tandem cells

could be a market ‘sea change’ in the making.

Today’s emergence of utility scale solar power plants and cost-effective energy storage systems are now driving market expectations. 2020 was a year that saw storage begin to live up to expectations. Analysts reported record-breaking numbers due to its nascent beginnings; behind the meter (BTM) installations rose significantly. Look for strong numbers in 2020 in many territories, not just Australia or in the southern/southwestern US where the economic argument for PV self-consumption makes adding batteries a no-brainer. Energy storage may also see growth due market design changes in the US and Europe. Throughout 2017 the PV industry worked through overcapacity issues—2020 saw a dramatic drop in China projects, so capacity that may have been intended for China largely went elsewhere including Australia, South America, and other regions. One region finally opening up is Viet Nam; 2020 saw substantial growth and more is expected in 2020 and beyond. Navigating the complex world of photovoltaic energy is at the heart of everything we do at Solar + Power Management magazine. Whether assessing capacity, gauging market leadership or envisioning the impact of new technology, we report on issues that affect the global solar supply chain. Manufacturers, researchers, designers, consumers and incumbent electric utilities can all better understand solar power’s present and future role in the global energy economy through Solar + Power Management magazine.

Don’t take our word for it. We organised and marketed a webinar for Oxford Instruments and we managed to deliver over 350 highly targeted participants. Here is what they had to say:

“The webinar organised through Angel was handled extremely professionally and ran very smoothly, from organising the presentations, to briefi ng our speakers and the actual webinar itself on the day.

We were very pleased with the number of participants we attracted on the day, and the fact that the webinar is now available to view on demand, as this in itself is a useful marketing tool for us.”
