Jost Ling – Immigration to the New World w/ Family Aft. 13 May 1816, the emigrants (Jost Ling and quite a few others from the surrounding area) left Grossdietwil. They probably traveled overland to Basel, where they then boarded boats which took them to Amsterdam, Holland. Some of the travelers remained in Holland, including Joannes Baptista, a nephew of Jodocus "Jost". This information is from Gordon ''Chuck'' Silas Lingg, 1999, and his Source is the "Minutes of the Small Council of Lucerne [Luzern]", dated 19 April and 13 May of 1816. Those who were continuing to the New World traveled on the Brig the Ceres. The immigrants reached the United Sates, the Port of Philadelphia, 21 Oct 1816. Source: Michael H. Tepper, General Editor & Elizabeth P. Bentley, Transcriber, Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Philadelphia 1800-1819 (Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc, Baltimore. 1986). John Shultz (Captain?), Ceres, Brig - Report and Manifest (21 October 1816), Handwritten, appears to me to be: Josp Ling, Frau Maria Ling & Five Children - A family. According to Lila Leah Lingg Bishop, there were 4 Daughters and 1 Son.

Joseph Antonius Ling Judith Vickery Firth

(The Son of ''Jost'')

Is it ''Ling'' or ''Lingg'' ? Extensively throughout the Katholische Kirche Grossdietwil (Luzern Canton, Grossdietwil Kirchenbuch, 1553-1966, Salt Lake City: Gefilmt durch, The Genealogical Society of Utah, 1975), it is noted that all of the older entries had ''Ling''. By the 1790s, the entries had both ''Ling'' and ''Lingg''. From that point, it seems the surname spelling was indiscriminate regardless of the individual who was being recorded. One theory is that ''Ling'' was the original Swiss spelling, while ''Lingg'' was the original German spelling. The German spelling seems to predominate as the German Priests began serving in the Grossdietwil Church, with the Swiss spelling slowly decreasing over time. However, as cited in the above Port Authority Records, ''Ling'' was still being used when Jodocus and Family were naturalized at Philadelphia. There is a Lingg/Firth Family Bible with the recorded Nativities, Marriages and Deaths for the family of Joseph Antonius Lingg and Judith Vickery Firth, wherein both spellings appear depending upon who was doing the writing. (Researched by: Brunetta Lafara Lingg, 22 February, 2013)
