TUCSON — What began as a plan to make southern Arizona a tourist destination in 1925 continues. On Feb. 20, the Tucson Rodeo Parade—now the Arizona’s largest one-day spectator event—will roll again.

The 2.5-mile parade route will showcase entries ranging from marching bands to colorful floats to horse and other animals as well as other unique entries. Crowds may exceed the 200,000 in past years, all lining the parade route, some camped out the day before to assure that they have a good viewing location. And because the parade is a recognized school holiday, there will be plenty of children among the viewers.

The Arizonans who participate as parade entrants are joined by others who travel from afar to be a part of this tradition. And, as ever, the parade honors its tradition of being non-motorized. Typically there are more than 900 horses and animals and over 2,000 people who participate as parade entries.

It started in 1925 as a parade to precede the first Tucson Rodeo. Then the rodeo participants and others were part of the parade through downtown Tucson that wended its way to the rodeo grounds at a site that is now part of the University Medical Center. The parade and the rodeo have grown and are centered on the area of South Sixth Ave. and Irvington Road, near where the Tucson rodeo grounds is located.

The parade starts at 9 a.m., on Feb. 20, on Ajo Way and Fair Street and proceeds eastward to Park Ave., then south on Park Ave. to Irvington Road turning west on Irvington to Sixth Ave. where it turns northward into the Rodeo Grounds.

Grandstand seating is available and tickets may be purchased online at www.TucsonRodeoParade.org. or by phoning (520) 294-1280. Ticket booths near the grandstand area sell tickets on parade day.

89 YEARS OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA

TRADITION

TUCSON RODEO PARADE

Those seated in the grandstand are treated to pre-parade entertainment beginning at 8 a.m.

There is plenty of parking inside the Tucson Rodeo Grounds but you need to be early because street-closures begin before 7:30 a.m. Sun-Tran buses run to the Laos Transportation Center on Irvington Road, a short walk from the grandstands.

Following the parade that afternoon is a full professional rodeo program. Rodeo tickets may be purchased online at www.TucsonRodeo.com. Plan to make a day of it – a great parade followed by a great rodeo –

just like it was in1925 when this started. Are you interested in being a Rodeo

Parade entrant? Each parade features entries from many levels. Businesses find exposure to the spectators as well as the television coverage helpful for their advertising. The Tucson Rodeo Parade always has organizations participating, along with riding groups, and even individuals or family groups. Every entrant is helping maintain a vital link to the past history of the region.

Parade entry forms, rules and other details are posted online at www.TucsonRodeoParade.org. If you have

questions regarding a parade entry you may phone (520) 294-1280, Monday-Friday.

The Tucson Rodeo Parade can provide horse-drawn vehicles for your use. These range from smaller carriages which can seat one or two occupants up to large farm wagons capable of having up to 12 rider/occupants.

The vehicles come equipped with horse(s), harness and driver. Wednesday afternoon, before the parade, is Decorating Day when entrants are able to decorate their wagons, within our guidelines, that we

Tidbits from the archives. The past 88 parades have produced a great many moments. Some of these are:

In the 1930’s the Tucson Rodeo selected a Rodeo Queen. The queen candidates were students at the University of Arizona. One year the contest organizers learned their newly elected queen had never ridden a horse. Hastily she was provided both a horse, and riding lessons. But the lessons didn’t take. For the parade she was tied to the saddle and stirrups and rode through in that manner.

Various entertainment celebrities have been in the parade to including Michael

Landon, Hopalong Cassidy, James Caan, Gary Cooper, Janet Leigh, Ben Johnson and The Cisco Kid.

A headline in the Arizona Daily Star read: COWBOYS ARE ASKED TO NOT SHOOT UP THE TOWN. Tucson in 1925 was a frontier town. The first Tucson Rodeo was held in the middle of Prohibition. With so many visitors expected, decisions were made to clean up the town. Arizona State Prohibition Director Frank Pool led a force of federal officials to town two weeks prior to the rodeo. The Arizona Daily Star reported that 25 stills were captured and an estimated 300 gallons of moonshine destroyed. And this was when T-bone steaks sold for 27 cents a pound and a Stetson hat cost $8.

Prizes at the 1925 Rodeo Parade included a 750 pound block of ice, 100 pounds of potatoes and a “Big Cactus” ham.

Our parade Grand Marshals have included Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly, Mike Candrea, Mayor Bob Walkup, Cele Peterson, Don Collier, Louise Serpa, The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, Baxter Black, Chuck Henson, Lute Olsen, Jim Click, Jr., Dolan Ellis and Governor Rose Mofford, to name a very few. The Tucson Rodeo Parade website

has a listing of all past Grand Marshals. In 1949 a cowhand from near Iowa City,

Iowa rode a horse for three months to get here for the parade. That’s more than 1,500 miles - in the winter. His name was Hal Roberts, a hand at a ranch owned by Walter Clago. The Clago’s had a family entry in the Parade that year and Roberts got here in time to join them. It is not known if he rode back to Iowa afterward.

The Tucson Rodeo Parade Committee presents the parade and operates the Tucson Rodeo Parade Museum. The Parade Committee is an all-volunteer organization and relies on hundreds of additional volunteers to help assure a safe and wonderful event. The City of Tucson provides a host of essential services to assure safety and smooth operation, and local businesses cooperate to help maintain the tradition. They rely on valuable sponsors for financial support to allow them to make this event possible, and to assure the perpetuation of this historic event.

Plan to be a part of the 89th Tucson Rodeo Parade. It’s a tradition rich in history and one of the few remaining links to the Western heritage of southern Arizona.

MARANA — Marana’s Sherry Cervi was the model of consistency at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and her performance paid off in a big way. She was recognized for three outstanding achievements; Cervi was crowned the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing world champion, NFR average champion and Ram Truck Top Gun Award recipient.

Cervi won fifth place in the final go round with a time of 14.15 seconds. The $4,808 check made the hope of placing in all 10 rounds a reality. Her average time on ten runs was an impressive 138.15 seconds. She was awarded a new Dodge Ram truck for winning the most money at the NFR. Cervi’s yearly earnings totaled a remarkable $303,317. This is her fourth world championship.

“I’ve had the chance (to win the world title) in past years and messed up,” said Cervi. “2010 was a great year but I could’ve won the average and world title

but sat down too early. When I left the first barrel tonight, I kept thinking ride your horse. When I got past the third barrel, I was relieved and full of emotion. This whole year has been a fairytale and that doesn’t come around often.”

Cervi and her equine counterparts have worked tremendously hard to earn all of her noted accomplishments, and they are well deserved.

“I have only won the average here two times and I wanted it again,” added Cervi. “Being consistent definitely plays into my runs each night. The average means a lot to me. I really wanted to finish what I’d started here.”

Contestants in the bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and bull riding along with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Associations sanctioned barrel race all competed for a total purse of $6.25 million at this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. On Saturday night, a record breaking 18,242 rodeo fans poured into the Thomas and Mack Center anxious to watch rodeo’s Super Bowl action and world champions crowned.

The Verde Valley Equine Festival will be held at the Cottonwood Equestrian Center on April 4, 5 and 6. Part of the Festival will be the Arizona Horseman’s Challenge 2014, and one of the competitors will be Thomas Clover, a resident of southern Arizona.

Thomas Clover (pictured above) was born and raised in the mountains of Wyoming. His family has been involved in the outfitting business in and around

Jackson Hole for more than three generations.

“Being in a packing family is much more than going on trail rides,” claims Thomas. This is where he first started getting on green and unbroken horses. “Taking care of a large herd of horses that spends most of its time wandering around open country will quickly teach a person how to work with their stock to accomplish their tasks.”

horsemanship experience that truly instilled Thomas’s love of horses.

After graduating from college with a degree in wildlife ecology, Thomas pursued training colts and found himself drifting to Tucson to find work for the winter riding. He resides in southern Arizona where he’s been working for himself as well as for the Bandalero Ranch, a breeding/training facility that specializes in reined cow horses.

Thomas’s horsemanship centers itself around the understanding of communication between the human and the horse. If a horse understands what the person wants, most often he will do exactly what we want. On the other hand, if we understand how our actions and energy are perceived by the horse, we will be able to understand how the horse will respond to our work with them. These principles are necessary weather we are starting performance horses or pleasure horses; Quarter Horses or Clydesdales; western or English disciplines. With this foundation, a horse has the potential to go any direction because the basis for understanding is clear.

It’s said that you should “never look a gift horse in the mouth.”At Reata Equine Veterinary Group, however, that is exactly

what we are spending our winter months doing. In addition to our upcoming Dental Month (February), our own Dr. Ann Pearson recently presented on the topic of “Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EORTH)” at the American Association of Equine Practitioners Annual Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

Her research, based primarily on horses in the Tucson area, was well received by the international audience of equine experts. We look forward to her follow-up article on The Horse.com later this spring.

Dental problems can manifest in a variety of behavioral changes, including rearing, head tossing, reluctance to stay “on contact,” teeth grinding, inappetence, and dropping feed. Consequently, unattended issues can lead to weight loss and potentially serious infections.

Most horses benefit from dental care every 1-2 years and a dental evaluation should be considered a necessary part of the semi-annual wellness exam.

For additional information on EORTH or the findings of this study you can contact Reata Equine Veterinary Group directly at (520) 749-1446.
