Work Expands inTwo-Thirds of AllStates in Januaryjumped to the top ranking for percentage of new construc-tion jobs (9.4 percent, 1,200 jobs); followed by NorthDakota (9.0 percent, 2,500 jobs); Hawaii (8.0 percent, 2,300jobs); Alaska (7.2 percent, 1,200 jobs) and Washington (6.0percent, 8,200 jobs). Texas (28,500 jobs, 5.0 percent) addedthe most new construction jobs over the past 12 months, fol-lowed by California (17,600 jobs, 3.0 percent) andWashington.Among states losing construction jobs during the past

year, Arkansas lost the highest percentage (minus 10.5 per-cent, minus 5,100 jobs), followed by Rhode Island (minus8.0 percent, minus 1,300 jobs); Montana (minus 7.2 percent, minus 1,700 jobs) and South Dakota (minus 6.4 percent, minus 1,400 jobs). Illinois lost the most jobs (minus 9,800jobs, minus 5.0 percent); followed by Virginia (minus 7,500jobs, minus 4.2 percent); Ohio (minus 5,200 jobs, minus 2.8percent) and Arkansas.Simonson noted that 34 states and D.C. added construc-

tion jobs between December and January, while employ-ment slipped in 14 states and held steady in two states.Wyoming had the largest percentage increase (4.6 percent,1,000 jobs); followed by New York (4.2 percent, 13,000jobs). New York added the largest number of jobs, by far —probably reflecting recovery work from Hurricane Sandy.Alaska and South Dakota had no change in constructionemployment over the month, while 14 states lost jobs, withArkansas having the steepest percentage drop (minus 5.0percent, minus 2,300 jobs); followed by Kansas (minus 4.0percent, minus 2,200 jobs). Arkansas lost the largest numberof jobs for the month; followed by Kansas and Pennsylvania(minus 2,200 jobs, minus 1.0 percent).“Construction spending has been rising for two full years

but contractors have been cautious about adding workersuntil they knew the upturn would last,” Simonson explained.“In 2013, both residential and private nonresidential con-struction should rise enough to offset a further slowdown inpublic work, and contractors will be looking for more work-ers.”Association officials said the cuts in federal funding for

construction triggered both by the so-called sequestrationthat took effect earlier this month and by spending bills nowadvancing in Congress would fall hardest on constructionemployers in states that have a large federal governmentpresence. They urged lawmakers to address out-of-controlentitlement spending instead of making disproportionatecuts to funding for essential infrastructure and military proj-ects.“Canceling construction investments will ultimately

worsen the deficit by undermining the nation’s growth andcompetitiveness,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the associa-tion’s chief executive officer. “Meanwhile, the burden fallsunfairly on states that host large military facilities, as well asstates with extensive federal lands, research and energyinstallations.”

energy distribution construction, has worked with JohnDeere for more than a decade and will be adding the250,000th backhoe to its fleet. As NPL’s preferred supplier,Deere was able to help develop a strategic sourcingapproach that allows them to maintain and allocate fleetsfrom coast to coast across the United States. “A good supplier is a quiet supplier, but a great supplier

is one who inspires change,” said Jim Kane, president andchief executive officer at NPL Construction Co. “Deere’scommitment to innovation has kept us ahead of the compe-tition. Their speed not only in delivery of equipment, but inkeeping up with marketplace demand is unparalleled.”For more information, visit www.JohnDeere.com.(This story also can be found on Construction Equipment

JCB’s Ecomax Engines Make North American DebutJCB machines featuring the company’s

Ecomax engines — a solution to Tier IVinterim emissions legislation — were on dis-play for the first time in North America at theAmerican Rental Association’s Rental Showin Las Vegas, Feb. 10 to 13, 2013.JCB Ecomax engines meet Tier IV inter-

im (or “Tier IVi”) legislation through the useof in-cylinder technologies that offer a clean-er, more efficient combustion process. As aresult of this technology, JCB met the strin-gent Tier IVi emissions legislation withoutthe use of diesel particulate filters (DPF) orafter-treatments such as Ad-Blue, accordingto the manufacturer. The JCB Ecomax engine builds on the

success of the company’s originalDieselmax engine. Ecomax retains the samekey characteristics such as high torque at lowengine revs, robustness and reliability aswell as low noise and vibration. The enginewas developed following a $126 millioninvestment program, and it hasundergone more than 110,000 hoursof testing across a range of diverseapplications, machines and environ-ments.

Customer BenefitsAs well as the obvious environ-

mental benefit from reduced emis-sions, the JCB Ecomax engine alsooffers customers improved torquethroughout the rev range, coupledwith noticeably reduced fuel con-sumption.JCB Ecomax engines can run on

standard engine oils, unlike engineswith after treatment solutions, whichrequire a more expensive CJ4 oil tofunction correctly. The “no-after treatment approach”

also allows for a recalibration optionthat allows JCB dealers to recalibratethe Ecomax engine to lower injectionpressures and turn off the exhaust gasregeneration (EGR) function without anyhardware changes. In effect, this recalibra-tion takes the engine out of the EPA emis-sions tier system and opens it up for exportto non-legislated countries that only offerlower quality fuels with higher sulphur con-tent. This maximizes the residual value ofused machines for customers and dealersalike without sacrificing the engine’sadvanced features, according to the manu-facturer.Because these engines do not require DPF

or after-treatment, their dimensions andspace claim on machines remain unchanged. This removes the need for any increase inchassis length or hood size maintaining themachines’ maneuverability and visibility. The JCB Ecomax engine range has been

extended to meet the needs of machinesspanning the 74 to 173 hp (55 to 129 kW)range, including JCB backhoe loaders,Loadall telescopic handlers, wheel loaders, the TM range of telescopic boom wheeledloaders, JS excavators, rough terrain forkliftsand skid steer loaders.

Backhoe LoaderThe introduction of the Tier IVi solution

also has resulted in an expansion of JCB’sbackhoe loader range. The company hasintroduced a new entry-level specification3CX model designed for rental customerneeds. This new entry-level 3CX is poweredby the 74 hp JCB Ecomax engine and comesstandard with the JCB SynchroShuttle trans-mission. From there, the deluxe end of therange starts with the family of 3CX Supers, powered with the larger 91 hp (67.8 kW)JCB Ecomax and coming standard with theJCB Powershift transmission. Rounding out

the top of the range is the four-wheel-drive4CX Super, coming in at 109 hp (81 kW)and also featuring the JCB Powershift trans-mission. All engines offer increased, usabletorque over their Tier III predecessors andoffer fuel savings of up to 5 percent. The launch of the JCB Ecomax engine

coincides with the introduction of a host ofother backhoe loader improvements. Whilethe 3CX has a triple-gear pump to power theworking ends of the machine, the 3CXSupers and 4CX Supers will now get, asstandard, a 44 gpm (166 Lpm) variable-flowhydraulic pump. These pumps are configured to perfectly

match hydraulic flow and pressure to thedemands placed on the system, yielding upto 6 percent fuel efficiency improvement on

top of improved efficiency already achievedby the Ecomax engine itself. The new vari-able-flow pump also results in lower leverefforts, reduced noise levels and rapid con-trol response for up to 30 percent faster cycletimes.JCB also has expanded the types of

hydraulic controls offered by its backhoerange. All machines will have JCB’s ClassicControls (mechanical style) to operate theback end as standard, while the 3CX Superand 4CX Super will see two additional con-trol options. With JCB Easycontrol, theexcavator is controlled via two seat-mountedjoysticks, giving the operator the same feeland feedback as the classic control, but withthe added benefits of low lever efforts andshort throws. With the introduction of the

Tier IVi range, JCB also haslaunched its new JCB AdvancedEasyControl, which offers many ofthe same features as JCBEasyControl, while incorporatingthe loader controls into the right-hand seat controller.A new in-cab monitor is standard

on all models, reporting fuel con-sumption and also allowing opera-tors to bypass daily checks by auto-matically reporting any fluid levelsthat are below acceptable levels.Overall, this new range of back-

hoe loaders gives JCB customers abroader choice of machines to per-fectly meet their versatile applicationand sector requirements, all whilelowering running and ownershipcosts.

Lift & Place LoadallJCB’s Loadall telescopic handlers will

feature the Ecomax engine in either 74 or109 hp models. The 74 hp engine, powering the 506-36

and 507-42, produces 6 percent more torqueand 5 percent more power at low revs thanthe previous Tier III engine. This results incomparative performance with reduced fuelconsumption. The larger units in the range — the 509-

42, 510-56 and 512-56 — are all poweredwith the 109 hp engine. Customers takingthese machines will see an average 15 per-cent increase in torque and 10 percent boostto low rev power.

The first-of-its kind ClevelandMedical Mart (MMCC) with12,200 tons (11,067 t) of steel andmore than 24,000 steel beamsmake the largest project in down-town Cleveland, Ohio history. When completed in the fall of

2013, the $465 million facility willconsist of a four-story above-ground medical mart as well as a230,000 sq. ft. (21,368 sq m)underground convention centerwith 60,000 sq. ft. (5,574 sq m) ofmeeting rooms and a 32,000 sq. ft.(2,973 sq m) grand ballroom. Nearly 100 tenants, including

health care providers, medicaldevice manufacturers, health careeducational institutions and healthcare technology companies havealready signed up for space in thenew MMCC.As managed by Merchandise

Mart Properties Inc., Chicago, theproject is working to gain LEED(Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design) SilverCertification from the U.S. GreenBuilding Council. MPPI has com-pleted one of the largest LEEDprojects in the world at Chicago’sMerchandise Mart. Five buildings were demol-

ished last year to make room forthe new 1 million sq. ft. facility. The five included a parkinggarage, Sportsman’s Restaurant, the Court Annex Building, theChicago Title Building and theeight-story 113 Building, all inCleveland’s central business dis-trict. Promptly at 6:00 a.m. on Jan. 3,

2011, crews fired up demolition

machines and began work.Demolition remained on scheduleand was completed under anaggressive schedule, despite thewind, cold, snow and rain that aCleveland winter and spring canbring. More than the five above-

ground buildings needed to be

demolished. Much of the demoli-tion took place down to 30 ft. (9 m)below grade at the old ClevelandConvention Center, Malls B and C,and Exhibit Halls C and D onLakeside Avenue. “The Cleveland Convention

Center was basically a giganticconcrete bathtub on top of which

was the Cleveland mall,” saidDave Johnson of MMCC. The first order of business was

to scrape off the grass, dirt, side-walks and trees that composed thetop of the mall. When that wasdone, crews demolished within thebuilding itself. They took downcolumn after column and gutted

the building. Independence Excavating,

Independence, Ohio, was one ofthe primary demolition contrac-tors. “Our main function was thedemolition of the existing conven-tion center,” said Ed Wilk, generalsuperintendent with Independence.“At one time we had some 25 to 27major excavators down there and40 to 50 workers. We had a sub-contractor helping us on some ofthe demolition, like the 113Building and the small parkinggarage and the Sportsman’sRestaurant.“There was some demolition

done on the existing public audito-rium,” Wilk said. “Part of that hadto come down to make way for thenew project. And then the conven-tion center demo was probablyminus 30 feet below finishedgrade,” he added.Richard Wilk, Ed’s son and

Independence’s superintendent forthe demolition, said the contractoremployed several hammers for thehuge demolition project. “We hada John Deere 450 with a hammeron it and we had a Hitachi 850with an Allied hammer on it,” saidRichard. “We had several Bobcatswith hammers and two or threeother excavators with hammers.” The Hitachi 850 was fitted with

an Allied/Rammer Model 7013hammer, a 16,000-ft.-lb.-classmachine. The 7013 model is thelargest hammer Allied sells, and itrequires a carrier in the 132,000 to220,500 lb. (59,874 to 100,017 kg)class. The next smaller hammer is

The purchase of a new SandvikDX800 drill has proven to be awise choice for Brent Coleman, owner of Design Blasting ServicesLLC in Murfreesboro, Tenn.“It’s been fantastic,” Coleman

said. “It’s the only true purposebuilt top hammer drill rig that canrotate on its superstructure. Youcan swing the entire cab 180degrees, which allows for moremaneuverability. It’s much moreversatile and has substantiallymore power than drills of the samesize or same supposed class. It’sbeen a very good machine.”Coleman explained that he orig-

inally purchased the drill becauseof its versatility. He wanted some-thing that had the power of a largermachine but was still maneuver-able.“We had a project just a month

before I bought it,” he said. “It waspaying extremely good money, butwe could not get the machine intothe area where the contractor want-ed it. It ended up taking us a weekto do it — they would have to buildus ramps and we would have topull in and out. It was a painstakingprocess, and I just kept thinkingthat if I had that drill by now, allwe’d have to do is swing over tothe side, and we’d have this thingknocked out in a day.“The rod changer system on the

DX800 also is much faster than thecarousel design that many drillsuse,” Coleman continued. “Theboom reach of the machine cou-pled with the ease of use of the rodchanger makes getting a shotdrilled out much faster. And rightnow, it’s getting almost 40 percentbetter fuel economy — gallons perhour — than any other drill we’vegot.”Coleman said that his company

has used the drill on four or five

different types of quarry opera-tions. “About four of them have been

limestone, and one was a sand-stone quarry, which is notoriouslyreally, really tough on drills anddrilling equipment,” he said. The machine was sold to Design

Blasting Services by Dave Parker,an account manager for ASCConstruction Equipment USA Inc.Based in Chattanooga, Tenn.,Parker works the southeast cornerof Tennessee and parts of NorthGeorgia in representing VolvoConstruction Equipment in addi-tion to the Sandvik drill productline.“The solutions I am able to offer

with the Sandvik drill product linehave proven to be second to none,”Parker said. Coleman said that he’s rented

drills for the past few years to han-dle his company’s projects.“When we were going to pur-

chase a machine, for it to be ourfirst machine and something thatcosts this much money, it had tobe able to do a lot of things verywell. The Sandvik can go into aquarry and drill five-inch holeswith no problem, just like amuch larger machine would beable to do. But then it’s so muchmore maneuverable than thosebig drills that you can get it intoplaces that you just can’t getanother drill into — where youhave to pull it straight in andstraight out. Being able to rotatefrom side to side covers a lotmore ground and your set-uptime is a lot faster. It can prettymuch operate in just about anycondition that we have,” Colemansaid.Parker said that the Sandvik

DX800 is a top hammer drill capa-ble of drilling up to a 5-in. (12.7cm) hole diameter using 2-in. (5cm) drill steel in lengths of 12, 14or 16 ft. (3.6, 4.2 or 4.8 m)

“It also has an on-board system(TIM) which indicates hole incli-nation and depth,” he said. “Theaforementioned, combined withthe 180-degree swing capacity, make the DX800 the best in thebusiness.”Parker said he was introduced to

Brent Coleman by his father, BenColeman, whom he had known forseveral years. He knew that Brentwas anxious to learn how the prod-uct had changed since it wasknown as Tamrock.“Brent Coleman is a man who

knows what he wants,” Parker

said. “His previous experiencewith Sandvik was valuable in thathe was already familiar with thedrill and he knew what to expect.Brent knew the options he wanted, and my job was to ensure that

Tenn. Firm Eyes Power, Mobility; Finds Both in SandvikColeman explained that he originally purchased the drill because

of its versatility. He wanted something that had the power of a larger machine but was still maneuverable.

Superior Trailblazer Conveyor Offers Quick Setup TimeSuperior Industries’ Trailblazer conveyor

enables crews to set up or take down in as lit-tle as two hours. That’s a significant timesavings over both transfer conveyors, whichcontain multiple pieces, and stationarygroundline conveyors, which require days oreven weeks for setup and tear down. The versatility of the Trailblazer conveyor

makes it ideal for a variety of applicationsand industries including aggregate, mining, recycling, waste handling and bulk process-ing. It includes 500-ft. (152 m) of fully belt-ed and assembled groundline-style conveyorthat folds up in an accordion style to easilytransport on an attached 84-ft. (25.6 m) trail-er. Providing 500-ft. in a one-load, towablepackage makes installation as easy as deter-mining a starting point and marking the des-tination. Once marked, the truck drivermoves forward, and a crew of two to fourunloads the conveyor. The crew inserts thesupports as the conveyor takes shape, setstake-ups and attaches the conveyor’s hopper. For added productivity, the hopper can beplaced at any location along the conveyor. The Trailblazer conveyor’s accordion

design not only allows for easier transport, but it also provides greater length with lessset-up time. With a length of 60 to 80 ft. (18to 24 m) for an average transport conveyor,it would take up to eight of them to equal thesame 500-ft. stretch of the Trailblazer con-

veyor. Those other conveyors also wouldrequire eight belts to maintain, eight drivesto power and eight transfer points.Connecting points can become spillagezones and greasing points. Eliminating them

not only decreases the amount of spillage, but also the number of areas that require sup-ports. That, in turn, significantly reducesdowntime for maintenance. Further enhancing efficiency and produc-

tivity is Superior’s Navigator return trainer.Used to provide continuous belt alignment, the return roller from the company’s compo-nents division maintains tracking and avoidsmaterial buildup that can cause costly down-time. Hinges provide belt flexibility to easilyaccommodate variations in grade, and a 50hp (37 kW) system ensures smooth travel atany incline. Trailblazer conveyors are fully customiz-

able and can be designed to various lengthsand with additional components to fit a cus-tomer’s specifications. Standard belt sizesare 36 or 42 in. (91 or 107 cm) wide by 500ft. long. Capacity limits range from 1,000 to1,200 tph (907 to 1,088 t) of 100 lbs. per cu.ft. density material, with a belt speed of up to400 ft. (122 m) per minute. The Trailblazer conveyor also is engi-

neered and equipped with safety in mind. Itstowable package includes a fifth wheel hitch, brakes and directional lights. Transportstraps and pull-pins ensure that each convey-or section comes off the chassis one at atime, and help guide it safely onto supports.Bolt-together guard rails easily pin intoplace. In addition, to ensure safety during setup and take down, Superior’s team providesconveyor operators with complete trainingon the system. For more information, call 800/321-1558

or visit www.superior-ind.com.

The Trailblazer conveyor includes 500-ft. (152 m) of fully belted and assembledgroundline-style conveyor that folds up in an accordion style to easily transport onan attached 84-ft. (25.6 m) trailer.

Doosan DXB130H, DXB190HBreakersIncrease ProductivityThe Doosan DXB130H and DXB190H

hydraulic breakers feature an energy recoverysystem that increases strike power for maximumproductivity. The nitrogen-powered breakers areequipped with an upper/lower suspension systemthat isolates the power unit from the housing, making it an ideal fit for a variety of demandingapplications, according to the manufacturer.Delivering up to 600 blows per minute, the

2,822-lb. (1,280 kg) DXB130H is designed foruse with excavators in the 16.5 to 24 ton (15 to 22t) weight range, specifically the DoosanDX180LC, DX190W and DX210W. Rated in the3,000 ft.-lb. impact energy class, the DXB130Hrequires a hydraulic flow rate of between 23.8and 37 gal. (90 and 140 L) per minute.The 3,698-lb. (1,677 kg) DXB190H is

designed for use with excavators in the 23 to 34ton (21 to 31 t) weight range, which includes theDX225LC, DX235LCR, DX255LC andDX300LC Doosan excavators. The DXB190H israted in the 6,000 ft.-lb. impact energy class andrequires a hydraulic flow rate of between 31.7and 47.5 gal. (120 and 180 L) per minute. The DXB190H is engineered with Doosan’s

two-speed control, which also is available on theDXB260H breaker. With two speeds, theDXB190H breaker frequency can be manuallyadjusted between low and high frequency set-tings. This allows the operator to match the

breaker impact rate to the working conditions foroptimized productivity. The energy recovery system captures the pis-

ton’s rebound energy and uses it to increase strikepower, maximizing performance. At the sametime, the main control valve system optimizesstrike power. Blank-fire protection is standard onboth the DXB130H and the DXB190H, and isaccomplished by using a cushion of oil at the baseof the piston, which reduces the metal-to-metalcontact in case of a blank fire situation.Thebreakers’ suspension system extends excavatorwork group life by absorbing harmful vibrationsand stress waves. Also, a main valve designreduces hydraulic pressure peaks that can reducepump life, crack excavator work group welds andcause system overheating. The cradle-mounted grease station delivers

continuous grease flow, reducing bushing andtool wear while minimizing maintenance costsand downtime. The DXB130H and DXB190Hbreakers also come with a mounting cap, auxil-iary hydraulic hoses, two moil points, toolboxand a nitrogen checking device. A one-year limit-ed warranty also comes standard. In addition tothe general purpose moil, working tools availablefor the DXB130H and DXB190H include a blunttool, a chisel and a pyramidal or “nail” point. For more information, visit

www.doosanequipment.com.

With two speeds, the DXB190H breaker frequency can be manually adjust-ed between low and high frequency settings. This allows the operator tomatch the breaker impact rate to the working conditions for optimizedproductivity.

could start on my own. I had basi-cally no overhead, and I had somemoney saved up, so I could paymyself a small salary until it builtitself up. That was four-and-a-halfyears ago, and here we are today.”For much of that time, employ-

ees included Coleman and oneblaster. Today, he has 10 employ-ees, including his younger brother,Ryan. The company specializes in

drilling and blasting for quarries, site prep projects, road work andblasting for underground utilities.Their work is mainly focused inand around mid-Tennessee.“Our approach is that we want

to be more specialized,” Colemansaid. “As with Nashville and othercities, areas are growing so muchthat there’s not really any blastingany more that’s wide open.Everything is in an urban area —

its downtown and you’ve got to beprecise. You have to be extremelysafe, and you’ve got to be fast.”Coleman is looking toward pos-

sibly purchasing another drill in thenear future.“This year has started off really

well,” he said. “I think maybe bythe end of the year, we’ll be readyto take one of the rental machinesback and purchase another drill.”For more information on Design

Tips on How to Choose the Best Telehandler AttachmentBy Brian BoeckmanSPECIAL TO CEG

Telehandlers provide a con-venient way to move manytypes and sizes of loads. Whenproperly selected, a variety ofattachments that fit on the endof the telehandler boom canenhance the versatility and per-formance of these machines.Determining the optimum

attachment for a particularapplication requires a thoroughunderstanding of the load youare moving. That means askinga number of questions: Whatare the width, length and heightof the load? Is it palletized forforks, or will the load require asling? How heavy is the load, and where is its center of gravi-ty? Answers to these questionswill direct operators to theattachment best suited to per-form the task at hand.Common to most job sites

are standard carriages thatenable operators to pick andplace an assortment of materi-als, from pallets of concreteblock to loads of lumber. Theytypically come in a variety ofwidths (JLG offers 50, 60, and72 in. [127, 152 and 183 cm]widths), so carriages should beselected to accommodate thewidth of the load. Fork lengthshould also be selected toaccommodate the length of theload. JLG offers 48-, 60-, and72-in. [122, 152 and 183 cm]forks as well as a 90-in. (228cm) fork extension for longerloads. In addition to width and fork

length, carriages vary accord-ing to their ability to tilt forwardand aft as well as side to side.Standard carriages provide theoperator with the ability to tilt

the forks forwards and back-wards. Side-tilt carriages tiltside to side for more preciseplacement and retrieval, whileside-shift carriages make it pos-sible to slide a load 4 in. (10cm) to the right or left duringplacement by moving the forksside to side on the carriage. Thisis especially helpful in ware-house applications or applica-tions that require load retrievalor placement through a win-dow.Another carriage option is

the swing carriage, whichrotates up to 90 degrees to theright or left, allowing operatorsto swing and place longer loadsthrough windows and in con-fined areas, or where exactpositioning is required. In addi-tion, a dual fork positioning car-riage provides the ability toadjust the position of each forkindependently, allowing theoperator to handle a variety ofpalletized loads without havingto leave the cab. Buckets provide operators

with another useful tool. A stan-dard utility or material bucket isan effective and efficient tool toscoop and carry loose materialsaround the job site, includinggravel, dirt, mulch and othersmall debris. To tackle largertasks, including clean-up asso-ciated with natural disasters, many telehandler manufactur-ers offer grapple buckets, whichfeature a hydraulic grapple armthat clamps down to grab bulkymaterials and secure the load.Truss booms offer a means to

move suspended loads and areprimarily used to set trusses, frames, and beams for woodand steel building construction.Available with or without awinch, the booms come in dif-

ferent sizes and provide theoperator with extra reach capa-bilities without requiring a larg-er machine. Suspended loads also can be

handled with a lifting hook. Thehook slips onto the carriageforks, adding versatility to thecarriage and allowing operatorsto lift awkward objects, likeseptic tanks and generatorswithout removing the carriage. Finally, personal work plat-

forms extend the capabilities ofthe telehandler and improve jobsite efficiency and productivityby lifting material and personsto working heights when thereis no safer alternative. The fork-mounted attachment can movebrick layers and mortar fromone level of scaffolding to thenext, lift inspectors for roofinspections, elevate electriciansand spools of cable to trans-formers, and lift maintenanceworkers to replace parking lotlights. To gain the full benefit of

each of these attachments, operators are advised to answerthe questions originally posedin this article and review theload chart that accompanieseach piece of equipment. Inaddition, it makes sense to con-sult with the local rental store ortelehandler dealer to ensure thebest match of attachment to thedefined scope of work. By tak-ing these simple steps, opera-tors will more fully appreciatethe versatility of the telehandleras a job site work tool, and itsability to meet a wide variety ofjobs faster and with greaterease.

Primarily off-road, it passes through thesecommunities, taking advantage of undevel-oped land and in some cases restoring andrevitalizing underutilized urban landscapes. As a result residents may look forward toincreased connectivity, a boost to economicdevelopment, and the area becoming a moreattractive place to live and work.Chuck Flink, Fellow of the American

Society of Landscape Architects (FASLA),president of Alta/Greenways, Durham, N.C.,led the design team for their client, theNorthwest Arkansas Regional PlanningCommission. He has been involved in plan-ning and designing Greenways for theGrand Canyon, the Miami River,Philadelphia’s Northern Delaware RiverGreenway, and the Little Sugar CreekGreenway in Charlotte, N.C.Flink described this Greenway as “one of

the most unique regional trail projects in theUnited States.”Sixteen mi. of the Greenway have been

funded by a $15 million grant from theFederal Highway Administration underthe Transportation InvestmentGenerating Economic Recovery(TIGER) program. The WaltonFamily Foundation is contributing a$3.75 million grant, a 20 percentlocal match for the TIGER II grant.Flink described the unique design

challenges of the project.“The project spans six different

jurisdictions and requires the designteam to obtain separate constructionapprovals from all of the communities,”he said. “Topography is one of the mostimportant physical challenges. The karstlandscape of northwest Arkansas hasforced the design team to select a route andalignment for the trail that minimizes impactto the native environment. Consequently, significant portions of the trail will be builtparallel or in close proximity to existingroads.“While some of the Greenway construc-

tion is straightforward and involves tradi-tional building techniques, certain elementsof the project have required and will requireunique and specialized construction equip-ment and expertise in trail building,” he wenton. To offer that particular expertise, Boulder

Construction, Fayetteville, Ark., is workingon the project.“Boulder Construction is one of the firms

involved in the project, and its president RonTroutman is one of the most experiencedtrail builders in northwest Arkansas and has

employed a variety of heavy-constructionand specialized equipment to build sectionsof the Greenway project. At times, workingin tight places with limited access presents achallenge that can only be resolved with cre-ative solutions. Ron and his team at BoulderConstruction Company are masters of thecraft,” Fink said.

BoulderConstruction,

was founded morethan 10 years ago and spe-

cializes in trails, parks, civil work and vari-ous commercial projects. The company bidthe first two segments of the federally fund-ed portion of the Greenway, these beingSection 7 (Horsebarn Trail), for which it isgeneral contractor, and Section 9(Promenade Trail), where it is serving ascontractor for the general contractor, ArcoExcavation and Paving Inc., Tontitown,Ark.

The company also is part of the develop-ment/design team for the Clear Creek Trailin the Fayetteville/Johnson communities andhas now commenced construction as gener-al and construction manager on the MudCreek portion of the trail.“Ron Troutman began conversations

regarding the privately funded Clear CreekTrail segment four years ago. The originalfederal funding was from the TIGER II grantof 2008 and design, easement acquisition, permitting and ground proofing caused con-struction for the Greenway to begin in Maythis year,” said Boulder Construction ProjectManager Jason Baxter. With 74 to 100 employees on the job, the

company is currently working on three sec-tions of the Greenway and are about to bidanother. The Clear Creek Trail will be com-pleted in 2013.Boulder Construction utilized all terrain

cranes to erect the bridges on the projects. They also will be installing horizontal pilesalong a bluff to suspend portions of theClear Creek Trail above the creek. Theirfleet of equipment for the project alsoincludes Caterpillar excavators,Bomag rollers, John Deere dozers,Volvo and Case backhoes, ram hoesand trenchers and Takeuchi skidsteers. Full size excavators havebeen used to excavate otherwiseunreachable extreme hillsides andthe ram hoes are necessary to exca-vate the weathered creek bed gran-ite the trail parallels.“This project has a high degree of

difficulty as it runs alongside ourcreeks and streams. The terrain isextremely rugged in these areas and thenature of the construction lends itself todaily challenges of dewatering and rockexcavation. Boulder has built more than 20miles of trail within the northwest Arkansasregion and our knowledge of the process isextensive due to this experience. In addition, the Greenway project has a very thoroughteam and, other than field conditions dictat-ing slight deviations from the originaldesign, we have encountered no problems,”Baxter said.In mentioning Boulder’s thanks to Alta

Planning, the Walton Family Foundation, and the Northwest Arkansas RegionalPlanning Commission, Baxter also extendedappreciation to the community “for its coop-eration across many cities to bring a worldclass trail to northwest Arkansas.”

CLASSIFIEDS

The U.S. Embassy in Djibouti was one ofthe most significant construction projects of2012, the Associated General Contractorsof America announced. As a result, the pro-ject’s contractor, Quantico, Va.-basedCaddell Construction Co. Inc. was one of17 firms to receive the association’s AlliantBuild America Award.

“These projects are shining examples ofthe construction industry at its finest, demonstrating tremendous skill, hard workand steadfast determination,” said JosephH. Jarboe, the association’s president andsenior vice president of Bethesda, Md.-based Clark Construction Group. “The win-ners are setting the standard by which allconstruction projects should be judged.”

Caddell Construction completed con-struction of a new U.S. Embassy inDjibouti, a dangerous and turbulent work-ing environment, on time. The team deliv-ered cutting-edge technology and met strictsecurity protocols. Special attention to safe-ty was required on this site, as the teamencountered 120+ F temperatures, malaria

and one of the highest concentrations ofpoisonous snakes in the world. The CaddellConstruction team was recognized for theircommitment to investing in the local com-munity through the hiring and training oflocal workers. The new embassy provides asafe and comfortable environment for U.S.diplomatic personnel and their importantmission.

The Alliant Build America Awards rec-ognize the nation’s most significant con-struction projects. A panel of judges, repre-senting all areas of construction, evaluatedan impressive number of submissions thisyear, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniquesand client satisfaction, among other criteria. The awards, which were announced duringthe association’s annual convention in PalmSprings, are considered by many to be themost prestigious recognition of constructionaccomplishments in the United States.

the Allied/Rammer Model 4511, which is a12,000-ft.-lb. machine that requires a carrierof 88,200 lbs. (40,007 kg) and up.

Terry Tomasko, equipment superintend-ent of Independence, said theAllied/Rammer Model 7013 hammer wasselected “based on our past experience andfuture needs for demolishing thick con-crete.”

One of the demolition tasks at the MedicalMart complex involved demolishing andremoving a concrete floor that ranged from2.5 to 5 ft. (.76 to 1.5 m) thick.

“They had some massive concrete thathad to be demolished (at the Medical Martsite),” said Ed Wilk. “It needed some bigguns to get it down and get it out. That’s theonly hammer we could use on the thick con-crete. Once you find something that works, you go with it. The production of the Model7013 hammer was very good. To my knowl-edge it met all of our expectations.”

Ed Wilk said Independence planned asequence of events to demolish the thickconcrete floor, which supported a retainingwall that needed to be preserved. Alternatingsections of the floor were hammered outwhile some sections remained to support theretaining wall.

Saw cutting came first, followed by theAllied/Rammer 7013. The floor sectionsbeing demolished were on the order of 35 to40 ft. (11 to 13 m) wide, by 60 or 70 ft. (18to 21 m) long. “We’d hammer out one sec-tion, skip 10 or 12 feet, then take out anoth-er section,” said Ed Wilk.

Richard Wilk said the Allied/Rammer7013 was also used to demolish part of theparking garage. It was a cast-in-place con-crete parking garage with the conventioncenter underneath it. Again, theAllied/Rammer 7013 had no problem takingdown the heavy beams and columns in thecast-in-place concrete parking deck.

“The Allied/Rammer 7013 exceeded ourexpectations and helped us complete demo-lition on time,” said Tomasko. The MMCCwill use 20 to 25 percent of the crushed con-crete on site for stone fill, sidewalk and road-way bedding materials. The remainder willbe used for local Cleveland projects.

The goal is to recycle 95 percent of theconstruction and demolition material pro-duced by the project. In addition to concrete, steel, aluminum, copper, reinforcing steel, brick, block, wood, gypsum, asphalt, plastic, cardboard and paper are all being recycled tohelp meet the 95 percent goal.

MMCC plans to recover 190,000 cu. yd.(145,265 cu m) of dirt and topsoil and124,000 cu. yds. (94,805 cu m) of recyclable

materials, leaving 6,000 cu. yds. (4,587 cum) of waste. Ed Wilk said he has beeninvolved in many projects in downtownCleveland but not on this scale. “Working indowntown Cleveland is always a challengebecause the rest of the world is trying to goforward while you are trying to build a build-ing,” he said.

DEMOLITION from page 34

As managed by Merchandise MartProperties Inc., Chicago, the project isworking to gain LEED (Leadership inEnergy and Environmental Design)Silver Certification from the U.S. GreenBuilding Council. MPPI has completedone of the largest LEED projects in theworld at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart.

“Working in downtownCleveland is always achallenge because therest of the world is tryingto go forward while youare trying to build abuilding.”
