KV ANAND

“THERE WERE NO COMPROMISES WITH SURIYA”Cinematographers, it seems, come with the gift of sight and story-telling. Consider the Maattrraan man’s success at the box-office – one that owes itself to long hours, hard work and an innovative mind. The man who made Kana Kandaen, Ayan and Ko dreams big and desires even more, but here’s the thing – truth is always stranger than fiction; his own story of a photo journalist who would one day rise to the A-list ranks with movies that ranged everywhere from water desalination to conjoined twins would make for a fantastic movie, by itself. And yet, KV Anand seems content to tell stories on celluloid, for now. Here’s an involved conversation that Pavithra Srinivasan had with him on his upcoming movies, his journey so far, and lots more.

What’s your mood like, right now?

Like the feeling right before giving an exam.

The teaser–trailer for Maattrraan looks and sounds refreshingly different. How did you come up with such a unique concept?

While doing the song for Sivaji, Oru Koodai Sunlight, in Spain, Director Shankar and I were on the plane when we saw a feature on National Geographic about conjoined twins who lived in 1854 or thereabouts – an American circus company bought them and showed them around as curiosities. They were named Chang and Eng. They are the about 54 years in the same way, and married twin sisters. Later, they bought a farm, built a house in the left and right where the girls each lived, while the twins alternated living in both houses. They had lots of children with both ! "# on earth did they even live like this, all those $ " minds. In Maattrraan I only took up the way % " && between their story and mine.

' % twins. If you want to know, twins are the most abused cliché in cinema! You have scenes where if an ant bites one, the other one will feel the pain and other similar outrageous ideas. Mine, however, based on conjoined )

The trailer of Maattrraan seems action- revolve around?

* form the whole story. I strongly believe in understanding my target audience. The + of who you are selling it to – your target customer. My viewers are from the age group of 13 – 30 years. They want something fast- " +! them a product, they want to see changes… / ! 79 7: "you need to make sure that lots of people watch it. Only then will the producers make * people. In which case, it must have both & true that a high-class audience might diss it. But as a director, I have to strike a balance.

Are you a perfectionist?

No. As directors, we need to compromise. Aim for something impossible, and then you get to a middle ground. Direction is nothing

but decision-making. After all, what does a $; * * *& gives money. What does the director do but say “Cut!” If anything, he determines the &# you want. But you must be 100% sure to !

This is your second outing with Suriya. What’s the experience like?

! 7==>Back then I used to wonder how someone can be so naïve. He was very innocent, and is innocent now too. But he is a learner, and has evolved a lot. This is not even the Suriya I worked with in Ayan. I can see the difference. Every day, he picks up something. His directors have moulded him.

Now that Suriya’s a huge star, was there any need to make adjustments to the screenplay,

Nothing of the sort. Not even during the days of Nerukku Ner was there any necessity for that. If anything, I extracted more work him " ;"he had to work on both characters, especially for the songs. Such was his commitment that even if I felt the take was good, he would compromise at all.

You’ve never had to compromise for anyone, then?

? !;@ & director. If you want to be a bit rude, you " ; "responsibilities. If something goes wrong, has no such hang-ups. Shah Rukh Khan !F # JQ# *talented and was always on time. Amitji was very sincere as well. Once the shot was done, X!Z * " [!"he would say a dialogue sitting on the table, explaining the symbol in the Maharastrian police uniform. His performance was astounding. Then there was Rajni sir in Sivaji – a very simple man who would even hold his own umbrella! Usually, artists have people for these things, and they have their *&& " come only very slowly. For us cameramen, " / !& Rajni sir is that he would simply never go! He

would just sit in his place after his shot and " !on light. You see, far from bringing him to @ ]During Devar Magan, I was an assistant to P C Sriram. He was brilliant. Kamal sir +! :999% * ^999[eyelid. He simply said, Pack-up – and he was the producer! Even director Bharathan said "["? " & #:999assembled, and only then did he carry on with the shot.

 "Superstar Rajinikanth.

"Rajni sir is a very simple man. The truth is, & ! ! up with a script for him. It is a big deal, you know. I respect him a lot.

How different are things, now that you’re a

#"$cinematographer to director?

As a press photographer to cameraman, there was a big advantage. Each cameraman is !what they want with the music director and " that way. Each day, the cost of production is `Z:! And a cameraman is always the one who stays long, with a director. Are you doing a movie with Kamal Haasan?

#z be like performing in front of a teacher. We +& With Kamal, directors need to be afraid of his cinematic intelligence.

What next?

Maattrraan, obviously. Your next project depends on your current project. And Maattrraan has come out well, with Suriya [!*;{&

BELTING OUT BLOCKBUSTERS Last year’s Kannada blockbuster Sanju Weds Geetha continues to sweep the awards at all major events. The movie brought Divya Spandana back to the No. 1 position! High on technical content, the brilliant team effort ensured that Sanju Weds Geetha became a money-spinner alright! The success of the film clearly thanks to the director Nagashekar, an actor-turned-director, who struggled for nearly 2 decades to stamp his class. Now flooded with offers, Nagashekar has taken up a multilingual movie titled Mainaa! Aravind G Shivkamal speaks to the man behind the lens

Hailing from one of the weakest sections of society, Nagashekar still happens to be & obtain a professional degree in engineering. “It is like living a dream for me. When I relate my childhood to the present situation, it is a generational shift. It is through sheer hard work, and the support of my friends and well-wishers that I have reached this stage. Believe me, never even in my wildest dreams did I imagine being here, compared to what I underwent in childhood,” declares Nagashekar honestly.

Born into a family that specialised in singing folk songs, Nagashekar was active on the theatre front during his school and college days. When he completed his engineering " % ]Instead, he packed his bags to Bengaluru and worked for theatre personality Arundathi Nag, wife of the legendry actor-director Shankar Nag. He learnt almost every aspect of theatre and sound effects under Arundathi Nag.

After that role, there were plenty of offers, and I was something of a star on the small screen for more than 4 years,” he points out.

Tired of playing negative characters, Nagashekar decided to try comedy and that gave him more success and recognition than his villain roles. Aramane turned out to be a blockbuster announcing the arrival of Nagashekar in Sandalwood. But he did not take up any other assignment because he had already started working on his dream project. Nagashekar ! believe in the movie masala fare of showing fantasy. I love showcasing reality, because why I highlighted the issue of child abuse in Sanju Weds Geetha,” he contends.

Sanju Weds Geetha had the perfect team of actors, technicians, music composer and choreographer. Nagashekar had put his heart and soul in the project and it created wonders for him. He was so involved in the project that he took two years to complete the movie! Ask him why and the answer he gives is “There are seasonal changes in the movie and I wanted to capture them in the natural format. I did not want to rely on graphics.”

Nagashekar confesses that he follows top directors like Mani Ratnam, Shankar and Puttanna Kanagal.

His next movie Mainaa, which is being made simultaneously in all 4 languages, is also based on a true-life incident. It has Nithya Menen and leading stars from all the 4 > !this multilingual movie. I have very high X& "Nagashekar says.

“WE KNOW WHERE DIRECTORS AND SCREENPLAY CAN GO WRONG”For over a decade, he had the top stars of the Kannada film industry dancing to his tunes. His stylish choreography has added a new dimension to the films of superstars with the songs going on to become video hits on the internet. Now, ace choreographer Imran Sardhariya, Imran master to the stars, is all set to don the hat of a director. He has already roped in several top stars for his films, but exclaims that he will disclose their names only when he announces the projects! Aravind G Shivkamal tells us more from his tête-à-tête

It has become common for successful choreographers to " and Kollywood choreographers have done it and Imran is no exception. From an independent perspective, I have learnt a great deal in Sandalwood. Finally, when I decided to turn director, plenty of offers came my way. It is always exciting to become a ]

Imran does not want to call his plots error-free, but has taken care to ensure that there are no lapses. “I have developed three different plots belonging to the comedy and thriller genres. For my debut, I have zeroed in on one plot which I believe will interest the masses greatly. A lot will also depend on the hero,” he points out.

Imran has worked with top actors, including Puneet Rajkumar, Upendra, Shivarajkumar, Ganesh, Ravichandran, Yogi, Duniya Vijay, Diganth and many others in the Kannada # ! #showered with awards for his innovative choreography, the most recent ones being the SIIMA and South Spin Style awards. The recent highlights of his career were the tracks from Nanda Loves Nanditha, Jackie, Super

and the latest hit movie Anna Bond. He is a top-billed judge in several reality shows and dance contests.

Imran admits that it was a challenge initially, but not anymore. “Two years ago, producers were skeptical when I approached them. That is not the case anymore. The fact that top directors have consistently failed at the BO in the last 24 months is prompting producers to try their luck with new scripts and directors. Last year, over ^Q [

“People have a misconception about !/ blindly. We should try to break the trend by giving audiences something new. Many & ! unnerves the producers while assigning projects to new directors,” Imran adds.

Duniya Vijay, Upendra, Yogi and Shivarajkumar are some of the names in & %as a director. But, one thing is for sure – choreography will be the highlight of his movies. Naturally, it means that he will want to cast a good dancer as the hero.

IMRAN SARDHARIYA

Presently, Imran is busy choreographing songs for movies starring Puneet Rajkumar, Upendra, Yogi and Diganth. The single biggest challenge for Imran as a choreographer has been the task of convincing producers to make stylish songs. He is of the opinion that songs convey the essence of the movie in a crisp and fun manner. “Look at the songs in Bollywood or for that matter Tollywood. Dances form the highlight of the movies and are added attractions to woo audiences to theatres. The trend is beginning to pick up pace here, only now,” he says.

THE BRAZILIAN BOMBSHELLBeautiful bombshell Nathalia Kaur is four films old, having acted in south Indian films as well as in Bollywood projects. The hottie who is of Brazilian descent, likes to describe herself as being more an Indian, than anything else. Aravind G Shivkamal is charmed as Nathalia Kaur talks of her experiences in the film industry

%& '((#"

It has been really a great and new experience. It is something that even in my wildest dreams, I did not think of! I never fathomed that I will be living this life in India. I am enjoying every moment of my life here.

%")*"+/ How was it working with him?

Working with Ramu is a very easy task because he is a very calm, focused and easy-going person to work with. He will never raise his voice or lose trust in you and your abilities. He believes you can deliver and I feel that pushes you to give your best. At the end of the day, you realise you have shot for 12 hours, and it all seems like you were just having great fun with friends.

Your entry seems to have shaken a few heroines. For instance, your co-star in 2$35$"the limelight.

Really? I never heard anything of this sort.

We hear that you have signed two movies in the south.

"could be either south Indian or Hindi. One was supposed to be a Bollywood project, as for the other one – nothing has been decided so far.

#" $which are culturally different from Hindi movies?

I love shooting in the south. I have been to Hyderabad and Chennai a lot on work during my days as a model and when we were promoting Department. I visited Hyderabad often and had the opportunity of meeting amazing people, and enjoying great experiences. Everything, including

["experience. I just love the professionalism and kindness of the people in south India. I do not see much difference between Bollywood and the South. Movie-making is an art, as !"happiness and instigating imagination, so it all turns out to be the same!

 67(&$

Any transition is not easy, as human beings are not very open to changes, they always takes time to adjust. But luckily, in my case, it was easy when it comes to the country, people, food... Of course, sometimes life "it would be like that everywhere around the world. I give my best to what makes me happy, and expect my reward, so I feel I am doing the right thing and move on with pursuing my dreams.

Is doing a ‘special song’ the way forward? Or do you want to act as a full-time lead actor?

I describe myself as an actor. I do not & &"" X& I aspire for meaningful roles. Which actor $ chance to portray different shades to my own personality by playing different characters. I want to have the chance to immerse myself in the character so much so that it becomes a part of me. I want the roles I play to be so complex, that I may even take something back into the real world from it.

Do producers insist on maximum exposure when they approach you for movies? Does it make you feel awkward?

Until now everyone I have worked with, has been very professional, centered with a lot of discernment. So I was always free to express my feelings about something I did not like

or was not comfortable with, and they would change it immediately.

Has an Indian star proposed to you? How did you react?

No, it has never happened.

Are you attending any (Indian) language training classes?

Yes, I am going through Hindi coaching classes, and I try to talk in the language and Telugu too. But you have to learn to crawl, before you learn to walk, right?

' ZDhanush. I remember totally forgetting my lines whenever I was in the same shot as him. He was that good! I knew Tamil, I understood the language, but when he used to perform, I would just look at him and forget my lines! He taught me a lot during the shooting of Aadukalam. Moving on to Telugu cinema, I have worked in two movies with Ravi. He is another actor who has risen from a junior artiste to a character artiste, a villain and then to a hero. He is self-made, and that teaches you so much! I have learnt a lot from him – especially about being grounded in spite of & ]'!Manchu is someone I have learnt a lot from too. In fact, every time I meet her, it is a learning experience for me.

You are one of the leading ladies in Ajith’s experience of acting with Thala.

I have just started working on my next Tamil ! Ajith sir, Nayanthara and Arya is a very nice experience! Ajith sir is just too good to be true. It is incredible that someone can be so amazing and grounded. Forget about the industry, even outside the industry, he is such a thorough gentleman! It is unbelievable that people like him do exist!

I am really happy that I chose software degree and a reputed one at that. It just helps me prove wrong the people who have negative notions about those who take to modelling. I am educated enough and had other options in my life too. I was placed in Infosys and even had my appointment letter % @ J; &;pursue that either! I chose to get into movies. I was modelling while I was studying so I !of modelling as a profession I identify with – I did it just for a year. In between that I participated in Miss India. I shot for a lot of commercials and print ads as well. Though I got a great response from the advertising world, I will always choose acting over the &/!clotheshanger for designers? I wanted to make a name for myself.

Your role as an Anglo-Indian girl in Aadukalam was appreciated aplenty. Being $anticipate the adulation?

? "&and choosy about leading ladies. I had absolutely no idea about that culture. I am a Punjabi and had no clue whatsoever about Anglo-Indians. Shooting in the Anglo-Indian community with Anglo-Indians and understanding them was a big challenge. One and a half years down the line, I can still hear people calling me Irene! They hum the song yathe yathae and it will be part of my life forever.

Last year saw your entry into Malayalam cinema as well. Are you strategically

planning your entry into each industry?

Only one thing was planned – my Bollywood state of absolute rawness and wind up getting into a wrong project, because it is such a huge industry there. He was a heartthrob in his time as a hero! I was very excited to meet him. He is very cute, and we connected in that he also has a Punjabi background. I consider myself !X&called struggling in the real sense.

You seem congenial. You must have made many friends in the industry. Tell us

Well, I have made a few good friends in the industry. I already have lots and lots of friends back home in Delhi and everywhere else that I have been before. People ususally say that the way you carry yourself makes a difference if you want to be in the good books route. I love to be myself. I indulge in enough of pretence and make-believe for the camera, so once the camera is off, I really want to be myself and I can do that only with the people ! me the chance to really mingle with or be great friends many of the industry people. Lakshmi Manchu is one of my closest friends – she is a mentor, a friend, a guide – whatever you may choose to call the relationship! She has been there though thick and thin. Many a leading lady agrees to show skin ‘if the script demands it’. Do you have the same ideals?

I think for me, it is more about whether I am ready rather than whether the script demands " it, I will be ready for it. If the script demands "not take it up.

What makes you decide on a script? What C

The criteria of choosing a script depend on what phase of career I am in. I am just three years old in the industry. I will try and work only with people I can learn from rather than X& my script. When it comes to the character that I am supposed to play, if it is something I have not done before, I am excited about it !&& " X]After three years in the industry, I think I have learned enough to go by gut feeling.

Actor Mahat says you had a relationship with him and it soured. He also said Manoj 3&What is your relationship with Manoj Manchu? And is your friendship with E3seeing Manoj?

I think I am the wrong person to answer + ) !+ " be answerable for it. It is just stupid and

me. If I am being dragged into it, I just feel that my name is being used so they get to sensationalise the news. They are not kids – & & ! what more to say about it. I was not even there when it took place, so I do not know what happened and who slapped who and who got hurt! I do know that both of them have fought. They should deal with it, not me. To answer this once and for all, I am not seeing Manoj now and I was never seeing Manoj at any point. It is just a sad situation in the industry that in order to justify your friendship with a guy in the industry, you have to either make him a brother or not talk to him at all. I am close to the Manchu family and they were the ones who brought me into the industry. My friendship with them will never be affected. I was close to them and I will remain close to them. Manoj is very close to me as a friend and for that if I have to tie a rakhi to justify that nothing is going "&& &! ! Jnot even been in touch with him. I refuse to comment on whatever he is saying. I am only answerable to my family and they know the & &

What’s happening now? What will we see of Taapsee’s work in the coming months?

 # *will happen in the beginning of next year. After that Gundello Godari and Marandhaen Mannithhaen should be out too. I am working on two Telugu projects – one is called Shadow opposite Venkatesh, and another Telugu project opposite Gopi. In Tamil with Ajith, Nayantara and Arya.
