Apple Harvest Festival 2009Mattress shopping isn’t what it used to be

By Michael Guerrera The Southington Citizen

Think back to the last timeyou went mattress shopping. You pull your car up to BetterBedding or Sleepy’s and walkin and see an ocean of com-fortable, fluffiness. You walkaround and “test them out,”taking a couple of naps in be-tween. Then you finally de-cide on one and it is simplybliss as you picture spendingthe majority of yourevenings comfortably restingon this bed of Tempur-Pedic.

Well, that’s how mattressshopping might go for the av-erage person on an everydaybasis, but for some, when itcomes to Apple Harvest time, picking the mattress is onlythe first step to bliss, exceptthis time, it’s a different kindof bliss. The second step tobliss is strapping four wheelson the bottom, the third stepis putting handlebars alongthe back and the final step tobliss is winning the annualApple Harvest Festival BedRace.

The Bed Race has becomean annual event at the Festi-val, taking place on Oct. 3,starting around 2 p.m., serv-ing as a great way to kickoffthe week-long party.

The Southington KiwanisClub is once again the spon-sor of this race that has beenaround for somewhere near20 years.

The goal of the event: pusha go-kart-shaped bed framewith a mattress down acourse and back in the fastesttime possible.

For such a complex event, though, rules must be laidout.

Bill Woods, a Kiwanismember since 1976, and LenMarcheselle, a member since1971, have both been aroundfor every bed race and ex-plained the “limitations.”

The bed has to have fourwheels, anything less is dis-

qualified because “threewheels make it easier to goaround the pylon,” Woods ex-plains.

A pylon? We’ll get to thatpart.

Another limitation is thatthe people pushing the bed, ateam of three, must have thehandlebars going no furtherthan the width of the bed. They can go backwards inany angle, but at the edge ofthe bed, they must stop.

Finally, there must be amattress and there must beone brave person lying on thebed as it gets pushed throughthe course.

Past that, it’s an open book. What the bed looks like, thewheel size, how it’s decorat-ed, the mattress being used –all things that are open for in-terpretation. However, somethinking has to go into theconstruction because some-times, quality is less impor-tant than quantity.

“Some are so heavy thatthey’re impossible topush...but they’re beautiful,”

Apple Harvest Festival 2009Apple Harvest races offer low-fat alternatives

By Michael Guerrera The Southington Citizen

Let’s play an Apple Har-vest Festival word game. Outof the following things, which doesn’t fit? Apple frit-ters, hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, sausage and peppers, pierogi, lobster rolls, Frenchfries...hungry yet? Now, atthe end of that list, let’s add a5-mile road race. Which does-n’t fit?

OK, so it’s more or less arhetorical question, but thepoint is that when everyonein Southington thinks oftheir annual festival, exer-cise and health are probablyin the back of their minds, ifin their minds at all.

Yet, one of the notoriousevents is the Apple Harvest

Festival Road Races, whichhave been part of the extrav-aganza for at least 30 years. And like it or not, they bringa good aspect to an otherwiseweek of enjoyable gorging.

“It gives a healthy compo-nent to the festival beforeyou start hitting the frit-ters,” jokes John Myers, ex-ecutive director of theSouthington-Cheshire Com-munity YMCAs.

It certainly is a healthyoutlet for all those takingtime to be a part of the festi-val. The YMCA is the organ-izer of the races again thisyear and has been doing itfor 10 years or so.

With the race kicking offthe Festival at 9 a.m. Sunday,Oct. 4, the first Sunday of thefestival, it is a chance to

draw people and get them im-mediately involved in thecommunity event.

“It’s our hometown race,”Myers said. “75 percent arelocal people, so it’s kind of ahomecoming. Everyonecatching up, asking howhave you been.”

After an estimated 700 peo-ple turned out last year,“numbers are strong so far,”for this year and Myers is“encouraged by that.”

“(We’d) like to do aboutwhat we did last year,” Myerssaid.

The road races have defi-nitely become a way to drawpeople to the festival at anearly juncture, somethingMyers believes is vital to thesuccess of the Apple Har-vest.

“I think it helps people toget to go to the festival,” hesaid. “Many people will comehere, run, they can showerhere (at the YMCA), theystay around and the paradeis the same day.”

The showers are one of themany amenities the YMCAwill provide to those runningin the race. As Myers put it,after running a road race, itis nice to get a shower. He fur-ther explained that with theparade kicking off at 2 p.m.that day, it gives people justenough time to clean-up, eat

and find a good spot alongthe parade route.

Other services the ‘Y’ willprovide is babysitting in theY’s babysitting center forthose parents who want toparticipate, but have chil-dren unable to run withthem.

Also, Southington CareCenter, another sponsor, intheir first year of involve-ment has gotten more peopleinvolved in the race and willprovide a pre-race stretch.

“It goes for families thatare having trouble payingtheir mortgage,” Alfano said.

Janet Mellon, director ofthe community services de-partment and the Southing-ton Fair Housing Officer, saidshe hopes the event will raiseenough money to prevent oneeviction or foreclosure.

Mellon said the event willalso provide an opportunityto reach out to the communi-ty.

“People need to know ifsomething’s wrong you cancome here,” she said, ex-plaining the need to promotethe help community servicesoffers.

Alfano said there is no agelimit on who can ride the hot-air balloon.

“It’s not like they take offanywhere,” he explained.

The balloon remains teth-ered to the ground while the

pilot takes it up 40 to 50 feetin the air. However, the 70-foot tall balloon will reachmuch higher up.

“The balloon is so huge Ithink people will see it,” Al-fano said.

Mooney said the ballooncan hold four passengers andhe expects to fit in about 25

rides over the two hour peri-od, but weather can affect thenumber of rides and howhigh the balloon can travel.

“The windier it is, the low-er we have to stay,” he added.

Alfano said he will alsodistribute red, white andblue RE/MAX mini-balloonsto people waiting in line.

the green, where there is apylon. They must completeone full circle around the py-lon and continue along thegreen to the end of thecourse where they mustmake a u-turn, and sprintback to where they started, now the finish line, to gettheir time. The average racetime is between a minuteand a half to two minutes.

Prizes are then awarded tothe top three finishers. Thecash prizes are $150, $75 and$50 respectively and the

money is given through theApple Harvest Festival.

Plaques are also given tothe bed with the most origi-nal design, best decoratedbed and team, and festivaltheme award. A braggingrights trophy is also awardedto the top civic club. Kiwanisholds an undefeated recordand challenges anyone tocome out against them.

“They’re scared to comeout against the Kiwanis clubbecause we’re so good,”Marcheselle joked. “But Ican understand becausethey’re probably too old, toofat and too lazy, to get outthere and push a bed.”

The winners, years in andout, are usually the fire de-

partments, Co. 1 and 3,which battle each otherevery year. They put a lot oftime in it and they have theiryoung guys pushing, ex-plains Woods.

Last year, there were ninebeds, but in the past, therewere as many as 13 to 14beds. Both Woods andMarcheselle hope for a simi-lar turnout this year.

Beyond the competition, the race is an exemplary wayto kickoff the festival and isa critical component to itssuccess.

“There are people downthere lining the sidewalk anhour and a half ahead oftime,” Woods said.

Marcheselle elaborates.

“All the beds bring theirown cheering sections andthey scream and holler andcheer,” he said.

“I think it’s very impor-tant because it draws peopledowntown and they buy hotdogs and hamburgers andwhatever else is for sale,”Marcheselle further ex-plains its importance.

Now, with the race hoursaway, teams are preppingtheir beds, their costumesand their designs to getready for the festival.Well...most are prepping.

“Some just put it togethera few days before the event,”Woods said, “and those arethe beds that collapse,”Marcheselle finishes.

This year’s Harvest themeis “Planting Seeds for the Fu-ture” so there should besome interesting layouts.

The beds will be unveiledprior to the race when theywill parade around the towngreen starting at 12:30 p.m.and they will be judged rightup until race time at 2 p.m.

The races are then head-to-head until the top teamcomes out of the pack. Anymore than two beds at a timewould not fit on the road andcrash.

Marcheselle leaves a part-ing word to the wise:

“The secret is in thewheels.”

Apple Harvest Festival 2009

With the weather still un-known, the success of therace hinges on two otherraces – the 2-mile walk/runand the Little Fritter funrun.

The 2-mile walk/run wasadded in the last five or sixyears and attendance num-bers spiked after that be-cause it was a good middle-distance for people who werenot ready for the 5-mile dis-tance.

The Little Fritter run forthe little ones, well, it speaks

for itself.“The Little Fritter Run is a

hoot,” Myers said. “Thesmallest kids just run thelength of the green, holdingtheir parents hands and asthey get older, they get to runaround the green; it’s prettycool.”

Within the three races aregroups that choose to get in-volved. The biggest may bethe local soccer teams, whichuse the race as a fundraiser.

The Chris Sanchez Memo-rial Award is given to thefirst soccer player that fin-ishes and the Dave GworekMemorial Awards are givento the top Southington maleand female. Awards are also

given to the top three finish-ers in each age group.

The Gworek Award bringsthe tight community aspectto the race because he was aman everyone knew and wasin the best shape of anyonein town, says Myers. Hisbrothers come to help givethe award and it is “emotion-al and touching becauseeveryone knows him.”

One piece missing thisyear will be Bill Rodgers, aNewington resident andworld renowned marathonerwho won the BostonMarathon numerous times,as he will not be able to bethere. He is a presence that isalways welcome and seems

to come simultaneously withthe thought of road races.

Still, this is an event 6months in the works andwith at least 100 volunteers, more are always welcomesays Myers and his partnerin crime, Karen DiGirolamo,YMCA Health and WellnessDirector.

The fees for the race are$16 for pre-race registrationand, on the day of, $20. What-ever money is made from therace goes to the YMCA’s

Strong Kids Campaign, which helps families in need.

With Oct. 4 now quicklyapproaching, things arefalling into place and peopleare getting excited to run,but the best thing is bringingpeople together and givingeveryone a healthy alterna-tive to an otherwise food-filled week.

“That’s what’s neat aboutit,” Myers said, “everyonegets a chance to do some-thing.”
