Suu SoFtball at dixie State on tueSday
CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah and Dixie State will meet on the softball dia-
mond on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for
February 26. The games are set to begin at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Karl Brooks
Field on the campus of Dixie State College.
The Thunderbirds will be looking to snap a two-game losing skid against the Red
Storm and also change the momentum in the recent series between the two
schools as DSC has taken five of the last eight.
The SUU offense will enter the game averaging .253 from the plate with 95 runs,
27 doubles and 17 home runs. Cora Cordova leads a group of four Thunderbirds
batting over .300 with her own .345 clip from the plate. Aly Daniels and Darleen
Fernandez have provided the pop in the line-up with four home runs with Fernan-
dez also leading the team with 21 RBI.
Heather Black has been the anchor for the T-Bird pitching staff, leading the team
in victories (eight), ERA (4.04), innings pitched (85.0) and strikeouts with 51. Pitch-
ing as a whole has struggled this year with the staff averaging a 6.26 ERA while
allowing opposing teams to hit .333 from the plate.
Fans can follow the games on Tuesday online with live stats available online at
www.suutbirds.com.
last time
Southern Utah went 2-1 against Western Illinois last weekend, posting victories in
games one and two with a walk-off home run and walk-off RBI double. The Thun-
derbirds had been leading 6-0 and then 7-6 in game three, but a five-run, two-out
rally by the Fighting Leathernecks prevented the series sweep.
Scouting dixie State
Dixie State will enter the games on Tuesday with an overall record of 10-3, includ-
ing a recent eight-game winning streak. The run includes a pair of victories over
Weber State last week.
The Red Storm have used strong hitting and pitching to pick up the victories as
the team carries an overall batting average of .316 and an ERA of 3.38 in the
circle. Six players are batting over .300 for DSC, including Breanna Egge and
Jaelle Judkins who are leading the team with averages of .424 and .422, respec-
tively. Ashley McFarland, third on the team with a .364 average, leads the team
with five home runs and 29 total bases. In addition to her .422 average, Judkins
is tied with teammate Ryanne Dascosin for the team lead in stolen bases as the
pair have swiped a perfect 6-of-6.
Lauren Folta and Brittnie Miller have spent equal time for the Red Storm in the
circle as each has appeared in 37.2 innings and recorded five victories. Miller
holds the advantage in strikeouts, 32 to 26, but Folta has the better ERA, 2.60 to
3.35, respectively.
last time against dixie State
Southern Utah was swept in a two-game set against the Dixie State Red Storm
during the first weekend in May during the 2010 season. The Thunderbirds
dropped decisions of 8-0 and 7-6 in the pair of defeats.
Senior leadership
Southern Utah returns a wealth of experience in 2011 with a total of eight seniors
appearing on the roster.
elementary circle
Despite the depth on the roster, SUU will be young in the circle with a pair of first-
time Division I starters in Heather Black (JUCO transfer from Snow College) and
Danielle Axe (transfer from Mesa State, D-II)
all-conference Returnees
Aly Daniels and Brittany Henderson are a pair of all-Summit League performers
returning for the T-Birds in 2011. Daniels was a first-team all-conference pick in
2009 with Henderson earning second-team all-conference accolades last season.
Sister Face-off
Southern Utah will face two members of the Ricketts family in 2011, facing Stepha-
nie, a pitcher for the University of Hawaii and Keilani, a pitcher for the University of
Oklahoma.
only the top competition
Southern Utah will have faced three teams in the top 10 of the country to begin
the season with games against No. 9 Hawaii, No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 3 Tennes-
see. (Rankings based on the pre-season NFCA poll)
double the Fun
Southern Utah has turned 18 double plays so far this season. The mark ranks No. 1
in the Summit League this season.
Winning is a hit
Southern Utah is only 3-14 on the season when being out hit by opponents.
beaten off the line
Southern Utah is 1-10 on the year when opponents score the first run of the game.
Kyle Magnusson was named the
head coach of Southern Utah
University softball in the summer of
2010, becoming the ninth head
coach of the program in its his-
tory.
Magnusson comes to Cedar City
after stops at the University of
Utah, Salt Lake Community Col-
lege and Hunter High School
(West Valley). Most notably,
Magnusson has been a member of the U.S. National
fast-pitch team, playing in international tournaments
from 2000-2009.
In his two seasons at the University of Utah, Magnusson
served as an assistant coach and co-head coach,
leading the Utes to a Mountain West tournament
championship in 2006. Utah went on to advance to
the finals at the NCAA Regionals, but fell to Texas in
the championship game.
At Salt Lake Community College, Magnusson laid the
ground work of the Bruins’ first appearance at the
NJCAA World Series in 2003.
Magnusson began his coaching career with Hunter
High School, turning around a program and leading
the Wolverines to three consecutive second-place
region finishes. HHS also recorded its best finish at the
state tournament under Magnusson, finishing fifth in
2003.
He was originally drawn to Utah to join the prestigious
Larry Miller Toyota fast-pitch team in 1994. The team
finished second in the ISC in 1995 while Magnus-
son earned several individual accolades, including
three-time ISC all-World team and five-time ASA Major
All-American citations.
Magnusson recently retired from the Men’s U.S.
National team where he helped his teams to a gold-
medal finish in 2002 in Guatemala, a silver-medal finish
at the Pan-Am Games in 2003 and a bronze-medal
finish in South Africa in 2000. He has also helped his
club fast-pitch teams to three ASA National Champi-
onships, including titles in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
Magnusson has continued to make an impact on
the international softball scene as he was named
one of only 21 coaches in the nation to the 2011-12
USA Softball National Coaches pool, including head
coaches from BYU, Arizona State, Alabama, Oregon,
San Diego State and Southern Mississippi.
Magnusson graduated from Olivet Nazarene in 1993
with a degree in business administration.
