When Southern Utah University’s 5,300-seat Centrum was completed in 1985, it washoped the state-of-the art facility would pushthe Thunderbirds to the highest levels of colle-giate sports. Clearly, those hopes are being fulfilled.During the 26 seasons the Thunderbirds haveplayed in the building it has been an inhos-pitible venue for visiting teams. The Thunder-birds have won 258 of 343 games in thebuilding, a winning percentage of 75.2. The Centrum was a key factor in SUU’sjump to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1988 andplayed a large role in Southern Utah’s bid to jointhe Summit League, and its more recent moveto the Big Sky. Since opening in November of1985, the Centrum has attracted thousands ofpeople to Cedar City for Thunderbird sports, concerts and numerous other athletic, aca-demic and performing arts events. The Utah Jazz have twice called the Cen-trum home for fall training camp and each yearthe Centrum is the centerpiece venue for theUtah Summer Games. The facility – which covers six acres andcost just over $8 million to build – is part of theSharwan Smith Center, which houses the SUUBookstore, Grand Ballroom, food services, andall of the student services offices. The con-course of the Centrum houses studios for SUTVand Power 91 – SUU’s television and radio sta-tions – the basketball offices, academic officesand numerous classrooms and art studios.

All totalled the Thunderbirds enter the seasonwith just nine seasons of Division I experience on the roster.

The returning lettermen include the two seniors, center JaysonCheesman and forward Jaren Jeffery, while the juniors arecenter Cal Hanks and guard Chris Nsenki. Sophomores wingA.J. Hess and guard Drake Thomas also return.

Cheesman started 30 games last season when he led theteam with 60 blocks – the second-highest single-season totalin school history – and averaged 6.8 points and 6.0 reboundsper game. Jeffery started 29 games and averaged 3.5 pointsand 3.3 rebounds.

Hess started the final six games of the 2012-13 season andfinished with averages of 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds pergame but while he was in the starting lineup those averagesimproved to 9.3 points and 5.0 boards.

Hanks blocked 36 shots while averaging 3.6 points and 3.0 re-bounds while Nsenki averaged 2.3 points and 1.2 assists.

Both came off thebench in every game.Thomas appeared in19 games and aver-aged 0.1 points and0.4 rebounds pergame.

“We have six returners and each of them did a great jobthrough the summer as well as through the fall in terms of im-proving on their individual skills,” Robinson said. “We’ve seengreat leadership from all of them in different ways and willhave three captains this year: Jayson Cheesman, Jaren Jef-fery and Chris Nsenki.

“With it being a new year we expect our leadership from thosereturners to improve and we expect their play on the court toimprove as well,” the coach went on to say. “We’ve got a lot ofguys that need to step up to fill the gaps from last year, bothdefensively and offensively.”

The newcomers include forwards McKay Anderson and CaseyOliverson and guards Trey Kennedy, Juwan Major, John Mar-shall and Race Parsons. All but Oliverson, a sophomore, areincoming freshmen.

“We have six incoming scholarship players and four new walk-ons for a total of 10,” Robinson pointed out. “I really like thecharacter of this group, I like their enthusiasm and I like the

versatility that this group brings to our basketball program. I thinkthe youthful energy will be exciting for our fans to see.

“Each of the incoming guys is going to have opportunities earlyto play and to compete at a high level. We expect all of them tomake a solid transition from high school or junior college to the Division I level. “

Anderson was a two-time all-CIF second-team selection at LaV-erne (Calif.) Lutheran HS where he averaged 10.5 points lastseason. Oliverson, a graduate of Smithfield’s Sky View HS,comes to SUU from Salt Lake Community College where he av-eraged 8.2 points and 4.9 rebounds last season on the Bruins’Scenic West Conference championship team.

Kennedy and Major were both Las Vegas, Nev. preps, withKennedy coming to SUU from Bishop Gorman High and Majorfrom Las Vegas High. Kennedy averaged 12.7 points, 6.3 re-bounds and 4.7 assists last year while Major averaged 14.2, 5.1and 3.0 en route to being named his region’s co-MVP last sea-son.

Marshall spent last season at Westwind Prep in Phoenix, Ariz.,where he averaged 12.1 points and 4.7 assists on a team thatwent 25-11 playing a nation-wide schedule, while Parsons was athree-time all-stater and two-time Utah 2A MVP at South SevierHS where he averaged 27 points and 8.8 rebounds per game asa senior.

The 2013-14 walk-ons include Peter Barrus, Eric Rippetoe (whospent a redshirt season at SUU in 2010-11 before playing thelast two seasons at Western Wyoming JC), Taylor Jenson andThomas Tebbs. Barrus is slated to redshirt this season.

At point guard the Thunder-birds have Thomas returningafter playing a reserve rolelast year, and both Marshalland Kennedy will see plentyof action as true freshmen. Inthe early going all three willshare minutes to see whoemerges in the starting role.

“We’ve got Drake Thomas asa returning point guard and in-coming point guards JohnMarshall and Trey Kennedy,”Robinson noted. “With thepoint guard position it’s beenextremely competitive throughour first practices. I feel thateach point guard is differentand brings something uniqueto the court.

“Drake has been a lot moreconsistent this year,” Robin-son added. “He worked ex-tremely hard in the off-seasonand he’s done a nice job ofplaying hard through [early]practices. Trey also brings awinning mentality and has acommand of what we want to do as a basketball team, offen-sively and defensively. John Marshall has a very physical pres-ence as well as great competitive energy at both ends of the

court.”

Nsenki and Major are both combo guards who can play eitherthe point or on the wing whose strength is their ability to defend.

“We have a couple of guards who can play either at the point orat shooting guard, Chris Nsenki and Juwan Major,” Robinsonpointed out. “Both Chris and Juwan defend at a very high rate atmultiple positions – both the point guard and shooting guard –as well as the small forward spots. Both have ability to play intransition. Chris has improved his range and shooting ability andhe does a nice job of slashing. Juwan has the ability to get to thebasket and his mid-range game is a strength offensively but thestrength of both those guys is their ability to defend multiple po-sitions.”

The shooters at the wing will primarily be Hess, Parsons and An-derson. Hess and Parsons have shown the ability to fill up thebasket in high school and Hess made a smooth transition to thecollegiate level last year, while although Anderson can alsoshoot the ball he brings athleticism and a defensive presence.

“A.J., with a year of experience and a great summer, has reallyimproved his feel for the wing position, whether that’s at theshooting guard or the small forward spot,” Robinson explained.“He’s become better defensively, he’s improved his pace offen-sively and we expect him to be aggressive like all of our guysgiven his experience.

“Race is extremely aggressive at the shooting guard spot andhas the capability to score in bunches but needs to be more con-sistent,” the coach noted.

“McKay brings a defensive presence and more athleticism to the

wing position and has shown offensive sparks both from behindthe arc as well as being able to get to the rim” Robinson said. “Collectively, at the wing I feel – as with all of our perimeter play-ers – we’ve improved our athleticism as well as our strength.,”he added.

Up front the team returns three players with good experienceand one newcomer with great potential. Jeffery started all buttwo games at the power forward position last year and he hasworked to improve his game in the off-season, while Oliverson isa good athlete who will be looked to for contribution early. In thepost Cheesman made an instant impact after joining the teamlast year. He was the only player to start every game last seasonwhile Hanks came off the bench in each game and has contin-ued to improve his game since arriving at SUU in the fall of2010.

“I’ve been pleased with the progress of our post play at both theforward and the center positions,” Robinson said. “I feel likewe’ve got needed depth as well as guys who can play in multiplespots.

“Jaren continues to be tough defensively but has greatly im-proved his offensive pace in the off-season,” the coach noted.“We expect, as a captain, Jaren to help lead our team this sea-son.

“Casey brings strength and athleticism to the front-court and hasa great knack or rebounding at both ends of the court,” Robinsonadded.

“We expect Cal to continue to improve at the pace he did lastyear. He has improved his physical strength dramatically andthat has helped him defensively.

THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE

2013-14 SOUTHERN UTAH BASKETBALL • 37

The Big Sky Conference celebrates 50 years of men’s athletics and 25 years of women’s competition duringthe 2013-14 academic year.

The venerable and stable Division I Big Sky Conference observed its 50th birthday on July 1, 2013. To markthe historic occasion, the league will honor its past by commemorating its top male and female athletics, as wellas the top moments and teams.

Four of the current league members – Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State andWeber State – have been with the league since its birth. Fellow charter member the University of Idaho will bringthe majority of its sports back to the Big Sky on July 1, 2014. Northern Arizona University enters its 45th seasonin the league, giving the league five members with at least 40 years of continuous membership.

The Big Sky Conference welcomed North Dakota and Southern Utah on July 1, 2012 as full members. UCDavis and Cal Poly joined as football affiliate members. Eastern Washington University, the University of NorthernColorado, Portland State University and Sacramento State round out the current membership.

The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in theFootball Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, in-cluding Eastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for the national championship in three of thepast five seasons. The Big Sky is one of three conferences in the western United States playing Division I foot-ball.

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga,Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before theleague expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was re-placed by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with theaddition of Eastern Washington.

The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put theBig Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Port-land State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years beforeCal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001.

The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of NorthDakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and Cali-fornia. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah,Arizona and Colorado. It is “The Heart of the American West.”

On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the nameof the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of GreatFalls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted theBig Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont.,legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana.Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of theSpokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his col-umn dated Feb. 20, 1963.

The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor andoutdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’svolleyball, golf and soccer. The BigSky sponsored softball for the firsttime in 2013. Men’s golf will returnas a conference sport in 2014-15.

In 1988-89, the Big Sky Confer-ence first began sponsoringwomen’s sports. The former Moun-

tain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsor-ing championships for women’s sports at the sameinstitutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The BigSky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, formingone league for both men and women.

Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the BigSky Conference, is in his 19th year at the helm. Fuller-ton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacinglongtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passedaway in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77.The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, whoserved from 1963-71.

QUICK REVIEW OF 2012-13 Southern Utah earned a berth in the BigSky post-season tournament in its first yearin the league after finishing tied for sixth withNorthern Arizona and Sacramento State, then subsequently winning the tie-breaker toenter the tournament as the No. 6 seed. After getting off to a slow start with fiveof the first six games away from home theThunderbirds won four of six – includingtheir first three conference games – in De-cember and early January to put themselvesin contention in the BSC. After weathering a four-game slide theteam bounced back to win five straightgames, the longest winning streak at SUUsince the 2001-02 season but struggleddown the stretch with five of the last eight onthe road. SUU had a pair players named to theall-Big Sky second team by the coaches, seniors Jackson Stevenett and Damon Heuirafter the duo finished third and fourth in theconference in scoring, with Stevenett rank-ing among the league-leaders in a handful of additional categories. Heuir earned a pair of Big Sky Player of the Week honors during the year, whileStevenett – who originally came to SUU as a walk-on – finished his career as one ofjust two Thunderbirds to rank among the school’s top-10 in both scoring and rebound-ing. SUU is also home to theTony Award-winning UtahShakespearean Festivalwith its Adams MemorialTheatre, based upon the original Globe Theatre, and the Ran-dall Jones Theatre, one of the finest indoor theatres in theWest.

Campus facili-ties rangefrom the tradi-tional ivy-cov-ered Old Mainand Braith-waite LiberalArts Center –built in 1898and 1899 – tothe multi-useSharwanSmith Center,a facility which houses the Centrum Arena – SUU’s basket-ball and gymnastics venue – as well as classrooms, a ball-room, the University’s student union, its bookstore andvarious offices.

State-of-the-Art campus fa-cilities that have opened re-cently include the EmmaEccles Jones EducationBuilding and a new phase ofapartment-style on-campushousing; while the CarterCarillon Tower has become, almost overnight, a charac-teristic landmark of thecampus.

Because of their proximity and grandeur, ZionNational Park and Cedar Breaks NationalMonument are claimed by SUU’ students aspart of their campus. Geology and life sciencefield trips take advantage of these nationaltreasures, in addition to Bryce Canyon, GrandCanyon, Capitol Reef and Great Basin NationalParks, which are also close by.

The University’s skiing classroom is at the 11,300-foot Brian Head Ski Resort, lessthan an hour away, while the recreational opportunities offered by Lake Powell are lessthan two hours away.

SUU has a history unique in the annals of American higher education. In 1897, the en-tire population of Cedar City, then a small pioneer town, engaged in the building of OldMain, the first building of the University. Beginning the project in mid-winter because of aharsh deadline imposed by the legislature, the men and women of the community do-nated materials, money and labor to complete the building on time.

Today the university campus has grown to comprise 133 acres, landscaped withfountains, tall spruce and pine trees, plazas, statuary, latticed walkways and expansivelawns, offering the kind of education you’d expect to receive at a small, private school atthe low price of a public institution.
