New seafood shop for ClonakiltyFish Seafood Deli has opened on Ashe Street, Clonakilty. Run by Peter Shanahan, this new venture is in addition to his existing shop based next to Ryan’s Service Station, Rosscarbery and provides local fish straight off the boats of West Cork daily.

Entrepreneur of the Year Awards underwayNominations for the 2015 EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ (EOY) programme officially opened to entrepreneurs across Munster as EY launched their nationwide search for Ireland’s leading entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurial talent from across the province attended the launch event held at the Clarion Hotel in Cork, Lapp’s Quay, on Friday last, to hear from previous EOY finalists. Individuals who wish to put themselves forward or nominate an entrepreneur with their consent, can fill out the online nomination form at www.eoy.ie or call the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ team for further information on (01 ) 221 2250. The deadline for nominations is Friday March 20th.

How to survive a Family BusinessFamily Business: A Survival Guide, primes those who own their own family businesses – or one day wish to do so – to meet the unique commercial and emotional challenges that arise when family members work together. Author Kieran McCarthy, partner at Hughes Blake Chartered Accountants, has packed it with helpful hints and tips for business owners and prospective entrepreneurs alike. Think again – a handbook can help save time, money and hassle, and ultimately foster staff morale.

Why you need onen A handbook provides a defined set of rules, guiding employees

and employers alike on company benefits, policies and procedures.

n Handbooks provide clarity and guard against confusion and misunderstandings.

n Handbooks help ensure a consistent approach and provide important legal protection to employers.

n Relying on casual verbal practices is dangerous – the “he said, she said” approach can lead to conflict and resentment.

n Having clear disciplinary and grievance procedures saves time, thereby boosting productivity among staff and management.

n A consistent approach builds trust and boosts staff morale.

What to includen Terms and conditions of employment – standard policies on

hours of work, overtime and time in lieu, bonuses, staff benefits, expected conduct, dress code, etc.

n Leave entitlements – annual leave and the need for approval ahead of time, public holidays, maternity and paternity leave, Christmas closures, etc.

n Disciplinary and grievance procedures.n Use and misuse of company vehicles and property.n A section on health and safety; harassment and discrimination;

policies on drug and alcohol use.n Unfair dismissal cases have arisen following staff postings on

social media. Clarify what is and isn’t acceptable.

General tipsn Don’t make it all about rules and guidelines. Articulate the

company’s vision and mission, and the need to work together to achieve common goals.

n Apply the rules. If you don’t intend sticking to handbook policies, then don’t compile one.

n Use straightforward language – most workers (rightly) hate legalese, waffle and business speak.

n Keep it short.n Keep it relevant by updating handbooks every two years or so.n Use disclaimers. For example, if detailing behaviour that might

merit disciplinary action, make sure to add a statement like ‘or any other behaviour that may damage the company’.

n Small firms who think a handbook is too much hassle should at the very least compile a short written document detailing general work policies, and ensure it is read and signed by new employees.

We were delighted to be asked to design and produce this book which chronicles the life and times of the legendary bowler, Mick Barry. The Southern Star has a long, rich history of covering West Cork bowling so this project has a special significance for us.

This 180 page, hardback book has been lovingly written and compiled by bowling expert Noel Magnier and

is packed with history, anecdotes, press reports and photographs from the great Mick Barry’s bowling career.
