Stephen R. Covey in The Seven Habits of Highly Effective
People reminds us,
"To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination.
It means to know where you're going so that you better understand where you are now so that the steps you take are always in the right direction."

To that End:Over the next two days we will: Identify practices and explore many tools
to provide access to the general education curriculum for SWDDefine strengths and areas for
improvement related to moving the SWD toward higher achievement
• Develop high expectations for all learners• Gain understanding of Universal Design for
learning• Review formats for planning for instruction• Identify strategies and tools to assist special
ed. teachers in their instruction
Incorporate information gained through this strand into district planning

Characteristics of Inclusive Schools
Diversity is valued and celebrated Staff have roles that are more
collaborative Natural proportions Flexible groupings, authentic and
meaningful learning experiences and developmentally appropriate curricula for all students
Array of student supports Active parent/community involvement Strong and active instructional leaders A unified belief that ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN AND SUCCEED
SouthernRegionalEducationBoard
HSTW NE

InclusionInclusive Education is a continuous
problem solving process, therefore, there is no RIGHT
staffing pattern or class composition
More students with disabilities in regular education more of the time and in more
meaningful activities (ODE)

In order to IMPROVE the overall performance of our SWD, there must be a
philosophical CHANGE
How will this change occur:areas to address for moving toward a more inclusive school: l Common belief systeml Alignment to Standardsl Effective Teaching Methods for ALL
learners l Involvement of all interested parties
in sharing ideas and concerns

THE GOAL: Decrease the
achievement gap for our SWD
We are obligated by law to provide Access to the General Education Curriculum.
To successfully close the achievement gap you have to start the process before any instruction happens
Remember Start with the end in mind!

Providing Access, participation and
progress Within the general education
curriculum hinges on:How we understand the curriculum or
more precisely, the “conception, design, and implementation of the general curriculum and the assumptions that underlie it”

Critical Questions in Planning from OSSA planning conference
What do I want students to know and be able to do?
How do I know what they know now?
At what level?
What standards? Which students? How to get there?
How do we differentiate our lessons?
How will we be sure ALL students will know it? How will we know?
Did we set clear expectations?Resources? Are they
adequate?
How to consider elaboration for those students who have mastered the standards benchmarks & indicators?
What do we do when they don’t know it?
Is the information necessary?
What are students’ needs for learning?
How do I get students engaged?

Margaret Wheatley wrote in Leadership and New Science (1994)
“I no longer believe that school organizations can be changed by imposing a model developed elsewhere. So little transfers to, or even inspires, those trying to work at change in their own organizations. . . .

There are no recipes or formulae, no checklists or advice that describe “reality” There is only what we create through our engagement with others and with events. Nothing really transfers; everything is always new and different and unique to each of us.
