PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATIONThe SD40T-2 is a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors

Electro-Motive Division having a 16-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine pro-ducing3,000horsepower(2,240kW).312SD40T-2swerebuilt forNorthAmericanrailroadsbetweenApril1974andJuly1980.ThislocomotiveandtheSD45T-2arepopularlycalledtunnelmotors,butEMD’stermisSD40-2swith“coolingsystemmodifications”becausetheyweredesignedforbetterenginecooling in tunnels.Thedifferencebetween this locomotiveand itsnon-tunnel motor cousin, the SD40-2, are the radiator intakes and radiator fangrillslocatedattherearofthelocomotive.Theradiatorairintakesinthismodel were along the deck to allow more fresh, cooler air to enter and less hotexhaustfumeslingeringaroundthetunnel’sceiling.
