From Cam Ranh, Vietnam, Quang Nguyen worked on his family’s fish farm before enrolling at SMCC. Quang was not deterred when he arrived in Portland and discovered that he had bought a ticket to Portland, Oregon, by mistake. Speaking little English, Quang worked with the airline to get to

Portland, Maine. Quang has said that he spent his first three months at SMCC sitting at the back of the class, debating whether he should return home. Eventually, he decided that the best way to learn to speak English better was to get involved. He became an Orientation and Welcome Leader, President of the Multicultural and International Student Club, then the largest and most active club on campus, Vice President of Fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa and Vice President of the Student Senate. His peers called him “Mr. SMCC,” and he graduated from the Business Administration program with high honors in May 2010 as a member of the All-Maine Academic Team. After graduation, Quang became an independent insurance broker and then a financial advisor. He opened and operated several successful businesses and is on track to be a millionaire. Quang has spoken in a TEDx event and worked with the Vietnamese buddhist community to open a temple in South Portland. In 2017, he became a citizen. He challenges everyone to do things outside of their comfort zone, to “find your passion and pursue it.”

SPeCial Student awardS

ANDREA ATKINSONStudent of the Year/President’s Award

Andrea is a Liberal Studies major from Portland with a 3.93 GPA. Andrea is the

PR Director for the Student Senate and President of the SMCC chapter of Phi

Theta Kappa. As the Public Relations (PR) Director for Student Senate, Andrea

has been highly involved with SMCC’s virtual programming efforts through the

pandemic and has assisted many students in creating their own clubs. In addition

to those efforts, she has led PTK in planning a mentorship program for students

from the refugee community and raising awareness and funds for Obsidian House.

These efforts culminated in the achievement of five star status, the highest honor a

chapter can receive and four regional awards: 2nd Place for Distinguished Chapter

Member, 3rd Place for Distinguished Theme Awards - Honors in Action, the

Paragon Award and 1st Place for Distinguished College Project. No sooner had

PTK been recognized for their college project than Andrea was planning the next

college project, a beach cleanup. Beyond SMCC, she was elected to regional office

as the New England Vice President of Membership for Phi Theta Kappa and

represents SMCC well throughout the region.

SAVANNAH GREENAll-Maine Academic Team

Savannah has overcome many personal obstacles in her life, and as a Communications

and New Media major at SMCC, she has also met every challenge and thrived,

earning a 3.95 GPA. In addition to her academic work, Savannah is a member

of Phi Theta Kappa and volunteers as the Adult Youth Activities Coordinator at

the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) of Southern Maine,

frequently presenting at conferences and working to ensure safe schools for all

students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Savannah’s current career

goal is to direct movies that “give the silenced a voice”. She wants to ensure that

there are accurate representations of Lesbian characters in film and “flip the script”

regarding marginalized groups. Savannah hopes to eventually earn a master’s degree.

CORTNEY LUCEAll-Maine Academic Team

Cortney is a Health Science major from Poland, Maine, with a 3.95 GPA. In addition

to her academic work, Cortney has volunteered with a local athletic trainer and

works with a high school basketball team. She is a member of the Path2Graduation

Program, the softball team and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She chose health

science because she has had to overcome medical challenges that she calls a mountain

she has to keep climbing. She wants to transfer to the University of Southern Maine

to complete a bachelor’s degree and hopes to eventually become a doctor. She credits

her success to her faith.

CHRISTINA LEBELDean of Students’ Award/Distinguished Service Award

Christina is a Human Services major from South Portland who was a dedicated

volunteer at the Captain’s Cupboard, the SMCC food pantry, in her first year at

SMCC. In the midst of the pandemic, Christina was hired as the Operations Manager

for the Cupboard. With most classes occurring remotely, Christina worked with

facilities to move the Cupboard to its new location. She posted videos to social media

to advertise deliveries of food and toiletries, describing how to scan into the new

self-service operation and information about expanded SNAP benefits for students.

She worked with communications and external media to cover the very real food

insecurity many in the SMCC community face every day. She coordinated donations

with Good Shepherd, local grocery stores and a student senate food drive.

She packed pre-made to-go Thanksgiving boxes. Because of Christina’s reliability and

dedication, the Captain’s Cupboard has remained available for all students.

Quite simply, Christina embodies distinguished service to the SMCC community.

capsThe black mortarboard or Oxford type is usually worn. There is also a soft cap,resembling an oversized beret, usually reserved for doctors. Certain universities use a gold tassel instead of black to distinguish the cap of a doctor.

gownsBachelor’s – This is a simple black gown with a fairly elaborate yoke. The sleeves are long and pointed. There is no adornment, although a few institutions permit a pipingof the school color on the yoke.

Master’s – Until 1960, the gown had long sleeves with the arms emerging from thesleeve through a slit at the elbow. The rest of the sleeve dangled, terminating at the knee of the wearer in a square cut end into which a semicircle was cut. In 1960 this gownwas modified, and an opening was made at the wrist.

Doctoral – This is an elaborate gown made of velvet, or with velvet panels around the neck and down the front, with three bars on bell-shaped sleeves. It is more fully cut and may be ornamented with a paneling and bars in color to indicate the faculty or degree.A few universities permit the doctoral gown to be in color.

hoodsThe distinguishing color of the hood tells the most about the wearer. Bachelor’s hoods are three feet in length. Master’s are three-and-one-half feet in length, and doctoral are four feet in length. Hoods are lined in silk with the official colors of the institution granting the degree. Bindings on hoods are respectively two, three or five inches in width for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral. The color of the binding indicates the area of study in which the degree was granted.

academic maceThe ceremonial academic mace, which you see on the platform before you, is an historical amalgam of the regal scepter of rulers with the weapon-like instrument known as a mace. The first dated record of the ceremonial academic mace goes back to 1385 at the University of Vienna. An academic mace is traditionally carried in procession and mounted on stage whenever degrees are granted or when the faculty is assembled in formal academic dress.
