y favorite time of year has finally arrived and a quick stroll near the local high school practice field reveals why. Before seeing the field itself, sounds and smells can paint the perfect picture. The smells of fresh cut grass and sweat fill the air. The sounds of whistles blowing and plastic

crashing against plastic accompanied by young men cheering, send the message… football season has returned to Mississippi.

over the past few weeks high school players have been battling through the Mississippi heat, soreness that comes with the first real contact since spring practice and fighting to keep their focus with the coming friday night lights on the horizon.

coaches have been spending there time outside of practice working on schemes, adjusting depth charts and watching countless hours of game film.

parents and fans have been spending there time getting ready as well. They have been marking their calendars and making their predictions for how the coming season will play out.

all of the practicing, coaching and preparing is all leading up to one of the greatest nights of the entire year. it is not simply just another Friday night under the lights at the local football field. it is the first Friday.

you see, all of these, players, coaches and fans will wake up on the first Friday morning of the season with one thing in common…hope.

on the first friday, anything can happen. on the first friday, last season’s wins and losses do not matter. on the first Friday, the rivalry game on week six does not matter. on the first friday, everyone is tied. on the first friday, the race to the championship begins at the same starting line for everyone.

There are few moments as special as that first friday night. Things like the first freshly painted field or the first smell of hamburgers being grilled outside the concession stand. for some of the players, it will be the first time they will experience their first Friday night. For others, it may be their last.

so players will take the field and play their hearts out. They will scratch and claw for every second that ticks off of the clock leaving nothing in the tank. coaches will throw out some of their best stuff. They will inspire and they will give their all in order to guide their teams to victory. fans will be out in full force and they will be extra wild. they will cheer from opening kick to final horn.

everyone will give their all because on the first friday, hope reigns and everyone has something to play for.

i grew up in the small Delta town of Drew, Mississippi. i wouldn’t swap that experience for anything. the friendships made there have truly lasted a lifetime. when thinking about what to write about in this first column, i decided to go back to where it all began.

the date was Friday, september 4, 1959. we were playing Marks high school. it was my sophomore year. i was nervous because it would be the first time i would run out onto the field as a member of the Drew high school eagles. i had dreamed of this for a long time. i started going to games with my Uncle hollis at an early age and saw some great football players run onto that field. i could name them but i’m sure i would leave someone out, but believe me, there were a lot of them.

i wasn’t nervous about playing because i actually didn’t expect to see any action. the day started on Friday morning at the pep-rally. Man, those pep-rallies were special. The cheerleaders and band were on the stage and it was really loud in that old auditorium. of course, the big moment came when Mr. James took the floor and talked about the game and sometimes even singled out players. you really were soMeBoDy if Mr. James called out your name at a pep-rally. i had to wait until the fourth game of my junior year to hear my name but that’s another story.

in order to receive your letterman’s jacket at Drew, you had to play in a minimum of 16 quarters. every sophomore dreamed of getting those 16 quarters in and earning that beautiful orange and blue drew eagle jacket.

after school we were on our own until 5:00 and then we had to report to the field house. on some games we

would have a pre-game meal but most of the time we were on our own. This usually meant going to the city café for a burger and fries. now folks, that’s what i call a pre-game meal! i remember on this day going with two senior friends of mine, charlie McGuffee and Jerry stigler. i remember rockin robin playing on the juke box.

charlie was the starting quarterback and i was his back-up. while we were having our burger, charlie told me that in the games where we were way ahead or way behind, he would fake an injury or just say he needed a breather so i could go in and get my quarter. that sounded like a perfect plan. That actually made me nervous.

we always beat Marks and i was hoping for a blow-out so charlie could get me in the game, but i remember it started raining and Marks was hanging with us. late in the fourth quarter we were only up 13-7. with about three minutes left in the game, i was feeling proud that we were going to win even though i wasn’t going to play. then, out of nowhere, i heard the words, “lewis get ready”, from coach Jones. i looked up and saw them helping charlie off the field. i remember thinking, not now charlie the game is too close. i can wait. But charlie was really hurt, and ready or not, i had to go in.

nervous was not even close to how i felt. Fortunately, all i had to do was hand off to run out the clock. i did manage to fake throwing a block to get my uniform dirty. i don’t know if Jerry and charlie remember this like i do but i will never forget it. it was my first quarter. charlie made a friend for life.

the oak Grove warriors enter the 2014 season as champions with a target on their back as they will be the team to beat in 6a.

The oak Grove offense will take on a different look after losing several key players to graduation this past year. The play from the quarterback position will dictate much about the success of the season.

regardless of who is slinging the ball around for the warriors, expect to see big numbers from wide receivers cameron Myers, if he isn’t the one doing the passing, and Jordan duncan. The running game will likely be improved as well with the return of Mikel anderson. anderson led the team in rushing last season.

on the defensive side of the ball, the warriors look to be in good hands as the team’s top pass rusher, isaiah spencer will be back. the secondary will have some shoes to fill left from last season’s interceptions leader chris Booth but they will have plenty of talent to choose from at the skill position.

the warriors did not stumble on their home field in 2013 going 7-0. however, this season the schedule becomes a little more difficult as they will open the season on the road against a stingy wayne county team and also travel to Petal later in the season.

Most of the time he is locking down a wide receiver position that has seen him haul in 85 passes for 1,207 yards and 18 touchdowns over the past two seasons. he has also picked off five passes on the other side of the ball.

the oak Grove warriors enter the 2014 season as champions with a target on their back as they will be the team to beat in 6a.

Most of the time he is locking down a wide receiver position that has seen him haul in 85 passes for 1,207 yards and 18 touchdowns over the past two seasons. he has also picked off five passes on the other side of the ball.

season by kicking the year off with 7-game winning streak and then knocking off south panola in the playoffs to punch their ticket to Jackson. They used an efficient offense and a very stout defense.

the defense only gave up a combined 17 points to offensive juggernaut south panola in their two meetings. on the year, they only allowed just over 10 points a game.

with young gun, Daniel Bristow back running the offense for his second season, the Green wave will be in good hands as he is once again surrounded by very talented skill players. Bristow played steady football in his sophomore season and will looked to again for the lead.

defensively, Tupelo has a lot of talent returning. athlete Jarvis wilson is the heart and soul and his flying around and energetic play have proven to be contagious.

Tupelo has a favorable schedule in 2014. they are very strong at home and will host south panola this season to the newly installed blue turf field.

with the defense poised for another shutdown season and if the offense adds a little more fire power in 2014, tupelo be looking at a return trip to the 6a title game.

the panther offensive line will be the driving force behind petal’s success in 2014. led by senior Javon Patterson, Petal will look to continue their dominance in the ground game. over the past two seasons they have accumulated 6,129 rushing yards with 86 touchdowns.

This season the guys carrying the ball for the panthers will be relatively new to their backfield as they graduated their top three rushers from a year ago. as for the passing game, it will be a new signal caller but will more than likely be a last resort/surprise passing attack as it has been for the past few seasons.

defensively the panthers will also have big shoes to fill as their top four tacklers also graduated. senior c.J. Johnson looks to take up the slack in that department and others will be expected to step up as well.

petal will play host to their rival oak Grove this season but will have three big road test at Picayune, the defending 5a champs, at Brandon and also at Meridian.

the tiGers enter the 2014 season in an unfamiliar position. if they will make a run to Jackson this year it will be done so as the dark horse team of 6a. By falling to tupelo in the north championship last season and with all of the teams in the south trending up, where does that leave the one time untouchable south panola Tigers?

with one of the game’s best running backs returning in darrell henderson and with a very solid defense led by defensive back ephraim kitchens, Drelan Porter, ryan lee and anfernee Benson, they look to be right where they want to be.

at quarterback will be junior Tyler Pogue and it will be difficult to find a QB that knows his offense as well as this first year starter does. for his entire life he has been sitting across the dinner table from the man calling the plays.

a big game for the Tigers comes in october on the road to Tupelo. south panola beat them last year for the district tile but fell to them later in the playoffs.

south panola will have an incredible rushing attack and if pogue settles in nicely to his role as field general, the Tigers will be marching back to their home away from home…the state championship.

outh Panola high school is known for having an incredible running game. for years, the Tigers have chewed up rushing yards between the trenches and plenty of game clock on the way to state titles.

it seems like every year a different big time running back is making waves in Batesville, Mississippi. however, out of all the talent the south panola backfield has seen through the many seasons of success, the man carrying the rock for them now could go down as the best.

Darrell henderson is a special player. at 5-10, 185-pounds, henderson possesses that unique combination of strength, agility and speed seldom seen at the high school level. he is a true threat to score every single time he touches the football and has done so over 50 times throughout his career.

with one blazing run after another, henderson scorched up the turf in 2013 on his way to breaking the 2,000 yard mark. the south Panola Flash ran through, around, away and sometimes even over the top of the opposition. he now has over 4,000 yards of offense in his career with his final season remaining.

henderson is poised for a big senior season and he isn’t shying away from the expectations.

“i’m looking to increase my yards,” henderson told ses. “i’m going for 3,000-plus and trying to get 30 touchdowns on the ground.”

henderson recorded several sub 4.3-second forties this summer at camps and combines. with him improving his speed and his strength this off-season, his chances of actually reaching the 3,000-yard mark do not seem too farfetched. he also believes the tigers are ready to return to championship status and he hopes to be the one to lead them there.

“i want to help get us back there. we have to come together as a team,” henderson explained. “we have to get stronger and work harder. we have to go out and ball.”

he will certainly be leaned upon heavily in 2014 as the tigers will have a new man taking snaps for the first time in a couple of seasons. however, henderson says he is excited to have his friend, junior quarterback tyler pogue, calling signals for the Tiger offense this season.

“i’m really comfortable with him because i’ve been playing back there with him since we were in peewee,” henderson said. “now we are on a

different level and i am very comfortable with that.”with possibly the state’s best running game and a stingy defense,

the entire south Panola team could be playing on a high level in 2014.if henderson is at his best, expect to see plenty of fireworks this

season and be sure not to blink, or you just might miss another long run by the south panola flash.

the laurel tornaDos took the 5a by storm in their first season of competition after getting the bump up from 4a. coach todd Breland and his young squad rolled off a 12-2 record.

the 2014 tornados will take the field with one of the most talented offenses in the entire state. They will be led by junior young gun keon howard. howard is coming off a stellar sophomore season that saw him throw for over 2,500 yards and 25 scores.

his ability to make things happen with his legs make him a true dual treat kind of QB. he will have a lot of talent around him. Junior phenom octavious cooley returns after posting back to back 50-plus receptions in each of his first two seasons of play. with cooley on one side and senior omar Bayless on the other, look for the Tornados to go up top often.

with the defense on their heels, senior running back kobe Drummer could be poised for another 1,000 yard season on the ground.

The Tornado defense has some shoes to fill from last season, but has enough experience coming back to be very effective.

Getting wayne county and Brookhaven as homes games this year will also be a big plus for laurel as they will make a serious push for the 5a crown.

The chargers return nearly all of their key players on the offensive side of the football including young gun Jack abraham. perhaps the state’s most accurate passer, abraham is on pace to put up some incredible numbers in his career at oxford.

with abraham having his favorite target out wide in junior receiver Dekaylin Metcalf, the oxford air attack should be in full swing from opening night all the way up to the first weekend in december.

running back kenzie Phillips put together a big season in 2013 rushing for 1,667 yards with 24 scores. he could improve upon that number this year.

defensively the chargers will rally behind senior leader Mike McGhee. The big guy came away with 153 tackles in 2013. the pass rush will see a more experienced korbin harmon return and the secondary will have anderson and Mccollin roaming around once again.

The front end of the schedule has a few tough patches, such as the week two home game versus starkville, but the back end plays out nicely for the chargers.

after a nine win season a year ago, ole Brook enters the 2014 season playing the part of giant killer. They have the talent to wreck a lot of teams chances at perfection and in doing so can make a run at the 5a title themselves.

a run heavy offense returns their top three rushers from 2013 including teviaunte McDaniel who racked up 826 yards and 12 touchdowns. they will, however, need to solidify their quarterback position and somewhat of a passing game to really open things up for them.

defensively, the panthers will be led by leo lewis. lewis plays the linebacker position with a rare combination of power and speed. he also gets to the ball carrier in a hurry and, more times than not, arrives angry. lewis is also the leading sack man for the panthers.

in the secondary, Ben robinson returns. robinson is a great cover guy that is a big help in the run defense as well.

Brookhaven will have to travel to laurel this season. laurel beat the Panthers twice in 2013. if ole Brook can get through the tornados then the sky is the limit in 2014.

laurel’s keon howard started every game for the tornados in his sophomore season, but it was not his first rodeo. howard took over the quarterbacking duties early in his freshman season and hasn’t looked back. howard put up 2,625 yards with 25 scores through the air and another 302 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. he now has 4,584 passing yards with 43 touchdowns for his career with two full seasons to remaining.

howard improved his game greatly over the course of the 2013 season and is now set to do some very special things in 2014 and 2015. Much like oxford’s abraham, howard has a big target to throw to in junior wide receiver octavious cooley. the duo has connected 108 times over the past two seasons.

with howard’s athletic ability to extend plays and improvise when needed, the tornados are set up to make a run in 2014.

Desoto central’s cameron Bowman is Mr. Mechanics. his throwing motion and his release are extremely sharp. the work he put in to achieve his text book work paid off in 2013 as the sophomore passed for 1,763 yards with 14 touchdowns quietly putting together a solid season.

as the season went on, Bowman began to get more comfortable and the game seemed to slow down for him and with that his numbers went up. he closed out the season throwing for over 200 yards versus Madison central.

also, as Bowman settled in, the Jaguars began to win football games. Behind their young signal caller, Desoto central will enter the 2014 season as a real 6a contender.

Daniel Bristow approached his sophomore season at tupelo steady and calm. his command over the offense may not have always transferred over to statistics, but the Golden wave’s signal caller quietly put together a great season.

Bristow completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,637 yards and nine touchdowns. he also rushed for 345 yards. the most impressive stat, however, was the number of wins Tupelo piled up on their way to the state Title game.

tupelo will be stacked at the skill position in 2014 and the numbers will likely be on the rise for Bristow. Most importantly, the Golden wave will begin the season as the team on top in 6a north looking to continue the success they started last season and Bristow will be the man leading the charge.

Junior QbS Set to expLoDe in 2014

Quarterbacks Jack abraham of oxford, keon howard of laurel, Daniel Bristow of tupelo and cameron Bowman of Desoto central did things in their sophomore seasons that are seldom seen by players of that age. The group combined for a mind boggling 9,597 yards and 86 touchdowns on 755 completions. Perhaps even more impressive than that is the 46 total wins they were able to rack up. their junior seasons are set to be even better.

Jack abraham was lights out in his first season leading the chargers. he completed 285 passes for 3,572 yards with 38 touchdowns. he also led oxford all the way to the state Title game. abraham could very well be the most accurate passer in the state. he is a pocket passer with a release so quick that an effective pass rush is almost impossible.

abraham’s success throwing the football comes with the help of a stellar receiving corps that features one of the nation’s best in sophomore Dekaylin Metcalf. the pair connected 52 times last season.

the oxford field general is on pace to throw for over 10,000 yards in his career. if he keeps slinging it around as often as he did in 2013, he will definitely have a chance to sail past that mark before leaving oxford.

north panola enters the 2014 season as serious contenders in the 3a north. it would be difficult to find a more talented group of skill players on the offensive side of the ball anywhere.

it all starts with the man calling the cadence. senior Jatavious farmer will be in control. he will be consistent and he will do what he needs to do to get his team the win. he is highly accurate on his throws and can extend plays with his scrambling ability.

Justin connor could be on his way to a monster season running the football and darius Thomas will also put in solid work at that position.

seniors willie hibbler and robert oliver will have the outside locked down as they each have the ability to beat any corner in the state in one of one coverage.

defensively the athleticism continues for north panola. some of the offensive studs will pull double duty which will actually make them even stronger and more agile as a whole.

The schedule looks to play to their favor and they get to host calhoun city on september 26, for a huge match up. this could be the big year for coach Derek king’s squad.

The schedule looks to play to their favor and they get to host calhoun city on september 26, for a huge match up. this could be the big year for coach Derek king’s squad.

imPact PlayerJustin Connor RB, 5-10, 190 lbs.north Panola has plenty of talent on offense, but junior running back Justin Connor could be on the verge of a breakout season. Connor has the skill set that will allow him to run through, around and away from defenders. north Panola could ride Connor deep into the post season.

Before suiting up for ole Miss and hauling in 173 receptions, 22 touchdowns and a school record 2,646 receiving yards shay hodge was pulling double duty for the Morton high school Panthers.

in 2005, hodge, playing nearly every single skill position on both offense and defense, pulled down 49 passes for 1,100 yards and 21 scores. he even picked off three passes on defense making him one of the top rated athletes in the country. he was also selected to play in Bernard Blackwell classic, which is the Mississippi high school all-star game.

as a junior hodge did a little bit of everything as well accumulating well over 2,000 yards of offense between playing quarterback, running back and wide receiver.

after time in the sec, nFl, aFl and cFl hodge took a minute to look back to his glory days as a panther.

“there is a lot of tradition there,” hodge told ses. “it’s a small community and growing up you knew who the big time players were. a lot of them would be at the games and watching us when we played.”

it just so happens that one of hodge’s favorite memories of playing at Morton comes from a district title game versus their rival Forest high school.

“it was against Forest and it was to win District,” hodge said. “i think i had like six catches and eight tackles or something. i had an interception and like five touchdowns. it was big because Forest had a big time player and we were going to be going up against each other all night.”

the game was played on november 4, 2005. hodge’s play at Morton was just a glimpse of what was to come for the eventual

ole Miss record setting receiver.

the yellowjackets have been on top of the hill for several seasons now. will they be able to stay there this season?

Bassfield lost a lot of key players last season, most of which will be lacing it up again this fall on the college level. They did return some great talent as well.

senior athlete Jamal Peters will be all over the field this season. he will be playing his usual positions on defense and offense but expect to see the ball in his hands more often. The running game was incredible last year and they return their leading rusher in Trodrick daniels.

Daniels rushed for 1,417 yards and score 25 of the teams 71 rushing touchdowns. Daniels is very durable and extremely difficult to wrap up and tackle.

it always hurts to lose a seasoned quarterback and Bassfield must find a way to feel the void left by calvin Moore this season if they want to continue their run.

defensively they will be led by peters but there are some young bull rushers up front that can cause a lot of damage in offensive backfields.

less than 30 miles separate the two small Mais schools of tri-county and central hinds. having two private school football programs that close together is not uncommon. however, these two teams are something special and it’s not their proximity to the other that makes them so. it’s the punch that each are packing in their offensive backfield.

Tri-county’s ryan cothern and central hinds’ Brian king have combined for over 8,000 rushing yards with well over 100 touchdowns in their high school careers. the 10,000 yard mark will undoubtedly be passed by mid-season this coming fall.

Their highlight films are incredible. They are made up of one long touchdown run after the other and the kind of speed that leaves defenders 20 and 30 yards away by the time they reach the endzone.

what makes them special, is not only their great speed but also their strength and agility mixed with a great sense of the game and what is going on around them on each carry.

in their senior season, expect to see them rack up yards and touchdowns at record setting paces just as they have done for their entire careers.

on september 26, these two will square off for the final time. ses will be on hand to bring you an in-depth look at these two offensive juggernauts as the fireworks fly under the lights in raymond, Mississippi.

The team’s leading tackler serderius Bryant returns and looks to continue to his strong play sideline to sideline. Denzel nkemdiche also returns. look for early playing time from Juco signee christian russell.

ole Miss quarterback Bo wallace has played the part of a true gunslinger the past two seasons for the rebels. he will now look to take his experience into his final year. wallace is bigger and stronger than he has been since arriving to campus, but most importantly, for the first time in ages, he is healthy.

statistically, wallace will go down as one of the top quar-terbacks in school history, but believe it or not, if his season goes as well as some expect, he could leave oxford owning nearly every ole Miss passing record.

The only record that seems to matter is wins and losses and as a starter wallace stands with his head coach at 15 wins, 11 losses.

the 2014 season will be the defining mark on the career of Bo wallace. Passing records or not, how this season goes will be how he is remembered.

even with the departure of wide receiver donte Moncrief, the rebels remain stacked at the position. lead by sophomore phenom laquon treadwell and senior vince sanders, the receiving corps is built to attack from all angles. sophomore quincy adeboyejo and tight end evan engram will also help to rattle the defense’s attention. also look for junior cody core to make waves as well as true freshman markell pack.

Defensedefensively ole Miss returns the sec’s only first team all-american in senior safety cody prewitt. the rebels’ pass rush was lacking in 2013 due to injury and inexperience. with the return of a healthy

c.j. johnson, the line should be much improved. with Johnson, the former top recruit in the country, robert nkemdiche had a very strong finish to last season and looks poised for an explosive sophomore season. expect to see big things from defensive end fadol Brown as well. he has been a monster on the practice field since arriving last year.

The team’s leading tackler serderius Bryant returns and looks to continue to his strong play sideline to sideline. Denzel nkemdiche also returns. look for early playing time from Juco signee christian russell.

in the secondary the rebels will be anchored by their all-american and sophomore superstar tony connor. ole Miss ran into depth issues last season in the secondary that have since been answered with recruiting and player development.

ole Miss quarterback Bo wallace has played the part of a true gunslinger the past two seasons for the rebels. he will now look to take his experience into his final year. wallace is bigger and stronger than he has been since arriving to campus, but most importantly, for the first time in ages, he is healthy.

statistically, wallace will go down as one of the top quar-terbacks in school history, but believe it or not, if his season goes as well as some expect, he could leave oxford owning nearly every ole Miss passing record.

The only record that seems to matter is wins and losses and as a starter wallace stands with his head coach at 15 wins, 11 losses.

the 2014 season will be the defining mark on the career of Bo wallace. Passing records or not, how this season goes will be how he is remembered.

an Mullen enters the 2014 season looking for winning season and bowl number five. This season, his team possesses just enough fire power to be dangerous in the sec west. with one of the country’s most explosive players calling signals and a young, hungry defense, Mullen could see his Bulldogs making a run.

Offensewith big holes left on the offensive line, Mississippi

state will call upon several to try and take up the slack in that department. fortunately, lining up behind the line will be junior quarterback Dak prescott.

prescott had a good season passing a year ago and also the team’s leading rusher. More impressively he managed all this in limited action. his ability to improvise and run with power make him a serious game breaker for the Bulldogs. if all goes according to plan, state fans could be in for a remarkable season from their QB.

Prescott could see an onslaught of rushers lining up with him in the Bulldog backfield. Junior josh robinson will likely see a heavy load early while sophomore ashton shumpert and freshman aeris williams will have their chances to find their footing.

The receiving corps will be led by a pair of seniors in jameon lewis and tight end malcom johnson. lewis caught a lot of balls in 2013 and is also a big play threat averaging over 14 yards a catch a year ago. state also added two solid players with jamoral Graham and jesse jackson.

Defensethe Bulldog defense improved greatly with each game and played some of the league’s best offenses

to their knees. in 2014, their young guns on the defensive line should be set to create a serious pass rush that was lacking a season ago.

sophomore chris jones and a.j. jefferson both look prepared to reign havoc on offensive backfields as veteran preston lee is set to improve upon his stellar junior season.

as for the linebackers, the team’s leading tackler returns in junior Benardrick mckinney. along with senior matthew wells, Mckinney will have a great deal of youth around him in up and coming players like richie Brown and Beniquez Brown. the Bulldogs also added freshman Gerri Green, who could make an impact down the road.

the secondary will be loaded with experience. senior jamerson love and juniors taveze calhoun and will redmond will lead the way for a few youngsters that should see a decent amount of playing time.

SeS foreCaSt: slightly Overcast with a chance Of sunshinethe Bulldogs should not have any trouble securing another winning season and bowl game. however,

odd Monken enters year two with southern Mississippi looking for win number two. although only two seasons have been played since the historic 2011 run that ended with southern Miss as conference usa champions, for the Golden eagles, it seems like an eternity has past.

with zero wins in 2012 and one win in 2013 it would appear the mess is far from cleaned up in hattiesburg. however, that may not be the case at all.

Offensealthough bright spots were hard to come by in 2013, quarterback

nick mullens is one of them. Mullens threw for 1,776 yards and 13 touchdowns as a freshman although he only played in nine games. after starting the final six games of the year, the field general looks poised to greatly improve upon that in 2014.

Mullens will have plenty of targets to look to in 2014. leading receiver tyre’oune holmes returns as well as big play man markese triplett. triplett caught 33 passes last season at a clip of 16.9 yards a catch.

D.j. thompson also returns after missing the 2013 season with a knee injury. look for marquise ricard and freshman korey robertson to have an impact in the passing game as well.

on the ground, junior jalen richard returns as the team’s leading rusher but only managed 324 yards last season. sophomore George payne will see action but expect true freshman speedster ito smith to be called on early. smith fits very well into the Monken offense as he is an exceptional pass catcher out of the backfield or slot.

Defensedefensively the Golden eagles will hit the field with veteran leadership that has been lacking the past two

seasons.linebacker alan howzie returns after an injury forced him to apply and receive a medical redshirt last

season. if fully healthy, howzie can be big in the middle. he will be joined by the tackling machine junior terrick wright. wright racked up 90 tackles last season.

up front the promising young star sophomore Dylan Bradley will be looking to improve on his 52 tackles he recorded as a freshman. senior and sack leader adam williams also returns to the defensive trenches.

The secondary will be welcoming back jacorius cotton. cotton redshirted last season after an injury in 2012 and being a key player in the 2011 title run. cotton will be joined by senior emmanuel johnson and juniors ed wilkins and kalan reed. expect to see sophomore kelsey Douglas and freshman cornell armstrong make impacts as well.

after playing his way onto the field as a true freshman, Jacorius cotton went on to start 19 straight games for the Golden eagles. his best season coming in 2011 when he recorded 98 tackles, helping his team on their way to being crowned conference usa champions.

a nagging ankle injury cut his 2012 short and then cotton found himself ruled academically ineligible for the entire 2013 season. he could practice but not play. he spent the season standing on the sidelines helpless as his teammates struggled to a 1-11 record.
