Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Folks!

The Holidays are upon us and for some that means tough decisions. The economy still continues to be a challenge for many. This is especially true during the Christmas season. Many parents, who are struggling already, fi nd it diffi cult to scrape up extra money to buy gifts for their children.

As you will see from the articles in this issue, there are many area toy runs supported by businesses and bikers who are always willing to help out those less fortunate. It is a true gesture of good will. Bikers always come to aid those less fortunate; it's what we do. Randy and I support many charities throughout the year because we want to help others. It's all about giving! Many others struggle with depression during the holidays because of lost loved ones or loved ones away at battle. Take time to share with

those less fortunate this holiday season. You never know when that will come back to you tenfold.

Wishing you and your family all the best and warmth this Christmas Season!

Thousands of motorcycles and some even homemade two, three and

four wheel customs came to enjoy the 2013 Biketoberfest that was held at the beaches of Daytona. Riders from around the world travel to this destination to take part in all kinds of motorcycle events, enjoy the sandy beaches or just to meet up with old friends and have a great time.

Main Street was packed at night with everyone enjoying all the local venues like the Boot Hill Saloon, Froggy’s, Dirty Harry’s, Full Moon Saloon and several others. Beach Street is held down with Bruce Rossmeyer’s museum at one end and ROAR Motorcycles on the other with all kinds of vendors and manufacturers in between and all around them. Rossmeyer Harley-Davidson played host for concerts, vendors, contests and lots of bikers.

The total number of people and motorcycles seemed to be down this year over the last couple of years, but that didn’t stop the thousands of riders who showed up to have a great time. Jasmine Cain, Mustang Sally, David Allen Coe, Big Engine, Molly Hatchet, Kimber Clevland & Roxie Randall amoung other great entertainers performed all over the

area. There were tattoo contests, bike shows, chariety events, rides and vendors from coast to coast.

Plans for 2014 Daytona Bike Week and Biketoberfest are already in the works so make your plans to attend and bring some friends that have never attended before. It’ll make you a hero to them.

Tom Caldwell, getting up there in age, you’d think would be slowing down

and ready to get on the couch and enjoy the slow life. That looked like the direction he was going to be forced to go with in this slow economy, AHDRA closing and sponsors even harder to find than a ten point buck during hunting season.

But I saw something near the end of last year’s racing that I’d never seen in him before. It was a sparkle in his eye and a Dale Ernhardt’esk, Cheshire cat grin. He had rekindled what most and even he had thought may have been gone; the drive and fire to win...and win with speed! My wife and I were proud to have Southern Biker Magazine again sponsor the Old Guys Do Rule Racing, Pro Gas Harley-Davidson drag bike for the 2013 season and we were not disappointed.

In 2013, Tom took the first green light and never looked back; probably because most of his competitors were usually looking at his behind. In the AMRA racing series he set nine new national records, qualified #1 three times and won four races in route to his second consecutive year’s championship for a total of four during his 29 year career. He also raced NHRA and got to the finals until being out dueled by a racer with a larger engine and much more horsepower (NHRA rules allow for different engine requirements for their classes).

Caldwell said, “I cannot convey the feeling of achieving what I have strived for; some going on 29 years of Harley Drag Racing. To reach this level of performance in competition has been a struggle but, nothing that ever comes easy, lasts!” He continued, “I was born into a Harley racing family and though it seems that is a curse sometimes, then a glimmer of success appears and back to it you go. To win back to back championships in 2012 and 2013, is to say the least very, very satisfying. The OLD man is happy!”

He began the year with this being his farewell season. Somewhere along the way, a new attitude and new pep in his step appeared and the team is not planning on retiring any time soon. We are looking for sponsors and those interested in helping for a third consecutive national championship can contact Tom at [email protected].

The season of giving is upon us and giving back to the community

were the Airmen & Soldiers of the Tennessee National Guard and a HUGE support from riders of the area and beyond. Present for the annual Tennessee National Guard Toy Run was none other than the head man himself, Major General Max Haston and his wife Anne. Knoxville Harley-Davidson West played host for a record, over 300 supporters and riders as Lenny’s Sub Shop dished out some awesome subs and wraps for all the riders before they headed out. Benefi ting from this year’s ride is the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and the children of soldiers of the CCRF (Combat Casualty Relief Fund).

Participants had stops to get their ride cards punched along the way at Oskies Sports Grill, Cycle Gear, Smokey Mountain Biker Gear, US Gold N Guns and Coyote Joe’s before ending the ride at Quaker Steak & Lube. There, 10# Biscuit performed live music, Knoxville Harley-Davidson put on a great Bike Show and auction items and door prizes were presented. Everyone had a tremendous time as the event garnered more donations and more toys than any other ride in prior years.

“This is just one of my favorite rides of the year”, said Michael Conrad. “I

look forward to seeing some of our own servicemen and riding with them as they give back to the community they protect.” I’m honored and humbled to ride along with our very own soldiers, after giving so much, who are giving back to the community

they call their own. Kristin & I are so honored to have been asked to organize this event and to expand it even further, as this ride will have an inaugural event in Nashville, starting next year. “HUA” to all those of the TNNG, God Bless and Thank You!

Sunday morning came, Prayers were answered as God parted the clouds, the sunshine came blaring through the skies and riders began showing up by the hundreds. The ride departed from Harley-Davidson of Columbia in route to downtown Nashville. Along the way people gathered at the roadside to waved at the long procession of bikes. What a thunderous sound it must have been to hear us drive by. Motorcycles for miles and miles were expertly escorted by outstanding law enforcement from several counties. Over 1,000 plus riders came to participate in the event and another 10,000 came to see the great concert put on by Dierks Bentley and his friends; Luke Bryan, Jake Owen, Easton Corbin, Brett Eldredge, Tyler Reeve and several others.

The concert was nothing short of awesome! Before Dierks arrived on stage, a few items were

auctioned off including some Dierks Bentley autographed guitars and a couple of signed motorcycle gas tanks donated by Ricky Kelley from Harley-Davidson of Columbia. Dierks sang a few songs and then the crowd went silent as they gave Dierks a check to present to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Dierks turned the check around for everyone to see and tears fl owed as Dierks signed the $307,296 check! The crowd erupted with cheers! It was

canceled due to severe weather that rolled in the morning of the event and it looked like this year’s event was going to be a repeat with bad weather. Funds raised for Vanderbilt’s C h i l d r e n ’ s Hospital from this event were down for the last two years

due to the bad weather and a boost was desperately needed. These funds help children in need, especially those children whose parents can’t afford to pay for large expenses that sometimes come with medical needs. I know our group of friends wasn’t the only one saying a prayer for good weather.

tens of thousands of dollars more than any previous event. Dierks was so excited that he sang many more songs and the crowd stayed to the very end.

Helping charities and people, especially children in need, is the reason we got involved and continue to help sponsor this wonderful event. A huge congratulation goes to Deanna Kenisell and her staff at Big Hearted Babes for getting this event organized, getting volunteers and sponsors and getting the event to be the largest ever in Nashville. It’s such a privilege and honor to be associated with such a great event people and a tremendous charity.

Next year’s event is already being mapped out so make your plans not to miss it.

A new transportation company, Elio Motors, plans to introduce a

$6,800, three-wheel, 84 mpg vehicle in the fourth quarter of 2014. It’s based on the understanding that most driving is done with a single occupant, the driver. That driver also has a larger vehicle at home for spouse or children. But primarily, the Elio would fi ll a void for those looking to save on price and save on gas.

Safety was a concern for Elio and their preliminary computer models show the Elio should achieve a fi ve-star crash ratings from the front, side, and rear. In addition, the Elio features a front airbag for the driver and two side curtain airbags that cover the front and rear seats. Once the car is retail ready, it will reportedly have stability control. It might not have the sex appeal of riding a Triumph

Bonneville motorcycle that has 865cc engine but the Elio has nearly the same displacement and makes roughly the same amount of power. “We have a 67-inch track, so it’s wider than a Ford Taurus. We have a 5 3/4-inch ground clearance, so about the same as a Mustang. So you know, it has low CG, wide track, double A-arm front suspension with McPherson struts,” Elio said. “We can take .9 lateral Gs, so it handles very very well, and you can’t roll it over on level ground. It’s remarkably fun to drive because it handles so well; you feel like you’re in an Indy car.”

Michigan follows California, Texas and other states exempting the trike from motorcycle license endorsements. Elio is also seeking exemptions from helmet laws in some states. Between now and its launch, we’ll keep you up to date on the Elio and any changes coming down the pike.

Gathering up at Centennial Park, motorcycle riders from all over

came to ride and support the Metro Police Children’s Charities at the 19th Annual Boswell Toy Parade. Over 650 riders came to support those less fortunate during the holiday season. Santa and his helpers were there on their motorcycles to lend some Christmas cheer.

As we headed out, we saw thunderstorms that were in the forecast. They stayed in front of us the whole way so we had some wet roads, but no rain. Arriving at Boswell H-D, the after ride party with live music and a cookout was tremendous. Everyone enjoyed the time together and meeting new friends. The food and live music were awesome! All proceeds for the event went to benefi t the Christmas Basket program, the Andrew Jackson Youth Camp and the Shop With a Cop program.

There was, however, a personal side story for us during the ride. We rode to the park and Kristin’s bike was not riding well. Her bike was having trouble being ridden at any speed.

Bubba Boswell arrived to the park and we went to see if he could get the bike in his service department as soon as we got to his dealership. (The next day we had the Dierks Bentley Ride and then the ride back to Knoxville.) Bubba immediately left his conversation and friends, came to Kristin’s bike, got on his back to examine the bike and look for the suspect problem. He immediately had a couple of ideas, but he knew the bike was not rideable as it sat. We arrived at Boswell H-D for the end of the parade and his service staff moved us to the front of the line and the bike was fi xed within an hour. To see an owner go out of his way, to personally care about someone and to personally get dirty to help to solve the problem, well, one word comes to mind...IMPRESSIVE! Thanks Bubba, Betsy & staff; the bike rides like new!

It’s the month of giving thanks and bikers from around the area came

together to help needy children at the 22nd annual Marines’ Toys for Tots Ride put on by the Smoky Mountain Marine Corp League Detachment #1206. Santa kicked off the ride from Sevier County Fairgrounds and headed to Knoxville Harley-Davidson East.

Hundreds of bikers came out for the ride and made donations or gave an unwrapped toy for needy children during a very tough economic time. “Man, you know, just looking, the big thing on Christmas morning when we give these toys out, is all the kids you see that come out is you know that these bikers are the reason they had a Christmas on Christmas morning,” said JT Cash, the event organizer. These toys are destined for children in 7 counties around the area.

escorted by Sevier County & Knox County Sheriffs Depts where lunch was provided and even more toys were collected. Also in attendance was Mayor Tim Burchett, but the biggest celebrity came in the form of a 94 year old Marine dressed in his 1949 issued dress blues, Frank Lowe. “I’m Glad you got to see me today”, he said. Everyone met him and all the other Marines who came to give back to community at Christmas time.

As Christmas time approached last year, I was visiting Rachel Plotkin

at her home and we were impishly discussing our “bucket list”, i.e., the things we had not yet done and wanted to do while we were still able. I suggested a motorcycle ride. Laughingly, Rachel said “Sure!”

Our “bucket list” conversation was the result of Rachel initially telling others, and me not buy her anything for her birthday; that she didn’t need or want anything and that “the gift of our being there and caring was gift enough.” From that came the “wish” conversation about doing something as an alternative birthday present, which, as you can imagine, quickly moved beyond a birthday wish to things she (and I) would like to do while there was still “sands of time” left in our lifetime’s hour glass. When I called that a “bucket list,” is when the fun began...

I excused myself and returned a few minutes later with my motorcycle

jacket, helmet and sunglasses. Rachel laughed adding, “You’re joking, yes!?” Assuring her I was serious and with only a moderate degree of persuasion, she said, “Okay, but you need to drive!” It was indeed one of those touted “MasterCard” moments: Priceless! And to the amazement of all who knew Rachel, her children in particular, the photos on the poster tell the rest of the story!

Thereafter, with the 16” x 24” framed poster displayed proudly on her door entry wall, it was a daily reminded to Rachel and all visitors of her fun and memorable “bucket list” achievement.

Rachel passed away in June of this year, but the “Biker Babe” story continues to be a favorite topic of discussion whenever I get to meet with Rachel’s family and friends.

Seven years ago, when Attorney and founding partner George Stein opened the doors to Steelhorse Law,

he made a decision to start a firm devoted to helping downed bikers protect their rights. Along with his law partner Brian Caron, and associate attorney William D’Elia, they have quickly established themselves as the premier motorcycle injury litigation firm in the South-east. Although the firm started in Atlanta, in the past three years Steelhorse Law, has expanded into South Carolina, and along with attorney Marcos Garza proud-ly opened offices in Chattanooga, Nashville and Knox-ville serving the entire State of Tennessee.

Yet Steelhorse Law’s goal is not to just help riders who have been injured in an accident, they spend a substan-tial amount of time speaking at chapter meetings and events trying to teach riders how to protect themselves before an accident happens. So we have asked Steelhorse Law to continue this tradition to help our readers and fellow riders. Starting next month, Steelhorse Law will bring their expertise and knowledge to Southern Biker. Southern Biker will proudly post an article every month from your lawyers at Steelhorse Law geared towards pro-tecting riders so they are knowledgeable on how to pro-tect themselves before they ride. Check back with us next month for their first article. In the meantime, your at-torneys at Steelhorse Law wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe New Years.
