I’m so grateful for the many friends I have in the chapter. Some are very close to being family,
although I wonder if anyone really wants to claim me. So many times there is a need, and some
how there are always hands to help, whether we recognize it or not. We help each other
because of friendship and the common bond that brings us together. So I just wanted to take this
opportunity to thank each and everyone of you who have lent your hand or helped your friends
in the chapter over the years. Some of you don’t come around as often as we would like, and we
do understand how busy everyone is with the demands of life, but we would hope you will
continue to join in the friendship shared by the chapter.
We have several things coming up this month. Hopefully, you will make the most of every
opportunity to share in the Fun, Safety, and Knowledge GWRRA is all about. Our illustrious
newsletter editor should be back from vacation soon, since their plans to attend Wing Ding 39
were so rudely interrupted by that man called “Harvey”. But hey, they got two extra days
aboard their cruise and a scenic drive added! The question is how much fun was it weathering a
hurricane just outside port? We welcome George and Gloria back and hope they enjoyed their
adventures.
Last month some of us got to enjoy a Total Solar Eclipse, while others
had less than favorable conditions and instead were entertained by the
dancing lights that made their way into the northern tri-county area. But
everyone experienced the darkness in the middle of the day, a one of a
kind experience This past month we’ve also had two Meet to Eats with
awesome turnouts. The last one even brought visitors from out of town
(uh oh). Yep, they came bearing gifts and presented us with that little
rascal called the hot potato. So, now we need to find another lucky
recipient to pass the half baked potato to, so get ready for a ride!
Next month we start to get busy. The weather will be cooler and the riding more enjoyable (at
least in the low country). We have our Fall Mountain Trip, which appears is having a great
turnout. We’ll be staying in Little Switzerland, NC just 100 feet off the Blue Ridge Parkway, with
lots of other great roads in the area just waiting to be explored. One group will enjoy a nice,
casual ride through the country side, with a stop at Blowing Rock and some water falls along the
way. If you need more info or would still like to join us, get with me and we will find out if there’s
a room for you. The lodge is including both breakfast and dinner in the cost of the room. It’s a
great deal with a great view. (403360)
We also have our Chapter Maintenance day coming up, so let us know if
your bike or trike could use some TLC. There will be some of the more
experienced technicians and enthusiasts there to help you get the job
done right, and the pot luck lunch is always a delight, so if you don’t have
any maintenance to be done, at least come and enjoy the pot luck lunch.
Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be thankful,
Mike Melton

Your GWRRA Training Record Have you ever wondered about all those Rider Ed Training Classes, Seminars and Courses, including
First Aid and CPR, you may have taken with GWRRA? Are you working on joining or achieving your next
Level in the GWRRA Levels Program and wonder if you are current, need to take a course again, or be re
-certified? Here’s how you can find out for yourself what is in your record.
First, go to this website: http://re2.gwrra.org/login_mem.php
You need to be a current GWRRA Member to log in.
Your User Name is your Membership Number.
Example - 123456 or 123456-01.
Your Password is the Numbers in your Home Address + your
Membership Expiration Date (MMYY).
Example – if your address is 475 Main St, use only the 475.
– if your Membership Expiration Date is 12/18, then
your Password would be 4751218.
Once you are there, just check the “VIEW” box to the right of your name.
The next screen will show your member information, name, address, phone number and email address.
It also shows
Chapter info,
including
Region and
District.
This is
followed by Rider History, Status, Level and Safe Miles.
Finally, your most recent Courses History: ARC/TRC, FA, CPR,
etc.
At the very bottom of the screen (you may need to scroll down a bit) you can click on the “ALL
HISTORY”
button and that
will bring up
all your history
including
Seminars,
Road Captain
Course, ARC/
TRC, etc., that you have taken.
Hint: Hovering the mouse over an Acronym will display its
description.
*** If you believe something is missing and you have documentation,
provide it to Mike Melton so it can be updated and corrected.***

Riding Safety in the Mountains In September we will be going to the NC mountains on two separate trips, the first being our
Chapter Fall Mountain Trip up to Little Switzerland and the second for the North Carolina District
Rally in Waynesville. That means some riding in the mountains, something some folks are
uncomfortable with. So, here are some tips to help those who ride on the curvey’s...
Tip 1: Hey Doc, I seem to have developed Road Rash…got anything for that?
Wear all the gear all the time (WATGATT). That includes the over the ankle footwear and the full
finger gloves. A helmet can be a life saver. Of course, we need the eye protection, the long
sleeves and the long pants to round things out and ensure we “cover what we want to keep”.
And wear bright colors so others can see you. If you can’t be seen, you are invisible.
Tip 2: So you guys have some seriously wicked curves and hills up here!
There are three lane positions when riding. Most people refer to them as 1) Left Track,
2) Center Track and 3) Right Track. When we ride our two wheel bikes on the open roads, we
tend to ride staggered formation, with the lead bike in the left track, and the wing man in the
right track. Trikes tend to ride in Left/Center or Center/Right tracks (they are a little bit wider).
But, when you get in the mountains, we normally go single file, meaning, you own your lane and
you need to watch the distance between bikes. When maneuvering the curves, it is important to
use the “outside - inside - outside” movement. Meaning, going into the curve, get to the outside
of the curve, find the apex by looking through the curve, and when coming out of the curve,
continue to the outside again. This is called “straightening out the curve” and provides for
optimum traction.
Tip 3: When riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway I keep seeing this hilarious sign!
You may see this sign while on the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP). This sign is funny,
I agree, but it also carries a very serious message. This sign warns you that the
curve ahead will get tighter as you ride through it. Most standard highways and
roads have a radius that never changes, which means you never have to adjust
your steering. But in the mountains, we tend to have more “increasing radius”
and “decreasing radius” turns. Meaning, you can’t just put your handle bars in a
position and hold it. That means you may also have to adjust your speed. So we need to heed
the friendly warning not to take things too fast or you may find yourself in the same funny pose!
I hope you find these tips of interest. Taking a few minutes for safety can mean
coming home with the bike AND YOU all in one piece, with no disfigurations.
Road rash is tough to get off the bike, and tougher yet to get off of yourself.
Ride safe and Ride often.
Mike Melton If poison expires, is it more poisonous or is it no
longer poisonous?

What Happened Last Month Here are some things that took place last month. Submit info for this page to
Chapter Gathering
Our monthly Chapter Gathering was on
Saturday, August 5th at Logan’s Roadhouse,
211 Azalea Square Boulevard, Summerville.
We had a “Crash Scene Response” seminar
before the meeting and a fairly good turnout
for the meeting. We talked about the
upcoming Fall Mountain Trip and some of the
other rides. We also discussed the video
distributed by the GWRRA Home Office about
the upcoming changes to GWRRA. We will
see what comes out of Wing Ding on that. So,
Ya’ll come on out to our next meeting and
catch up on the upcoming events and time
with great friends.
Solar Eclipse
This Solar Eclipse was big across the US,
because it crossed 14 states with a total
eclipse. Although, some did not have the
wonderful viewing weather, we all
experienced night in the middle of the day.
Some had parties, while others took the short
notice drive to get away from the clouds that
moved into the Tri-County area. I’ve heard
lots of great things about everyone’s
experience. The next opportunity to see a
total eclipse will be in 2024 and will cover 12
states, with another in 2045 covering 10 states.
I don’t know that I’ll be around for that one.
Some saw this —— while others saw this.
And this is what it
looked like from
the sky. (Minus the
markings for the
state which have
been overlaid.)
Meet to Eats
We had two Meet to Eats again this month and
one Dessert Meet. The first Meet to Eat was on
the 10th at the new Swig and Swine in
Summerville. We had a great turnout and the
food was good. The restaurant also gave us a
tour of their smokehouse. The second Meet to
Eat was on the 24th at La Hacienda by Tanger
Mall. We even had some surprise out of town
guests who came bearing gifts (whether we
wanted it or not). But a great time was had by
all. Our Dessert Meet was on the 29th at DQ
Grill & Chill restaurant in Goose Creek. We
had a small group, which actually surprised
me, because I though most of our members
were big fans of DQ. Maybe you have had too
much of it already. Anyway, if you have a
suggestion for a Meet to Eat or Dessert Meet,
please send an email to: g-team@gwrra-sc-
g.org.
Bill’s Rides
Unfortunately, Bill did not have his Trike on
the road for most of the month, but he has
solved that problem. Now he has a Trike for
sale, since he has two of them. So maybe we
will see some rides in September?
Mikey’s Rides
None in August again. Maybe in September as
things settle down and all the repairs get
made. Dang silly bolts!
Wing Ding 39
At the time of print, Wing Ding is still in
progress, but we did have some of our folks to
brave the weather, tropical storms, and wind
and make it there. And, the announcement is,
Wing Ding 40
(next year) will
be in
Knoxville, TN.
That makes it
much closer,
and we hope to
see you there.

What’s Happening This Month and Beyond Here are some things that are coming up in the future. Submit info for this page to
Chapter G Gathering
Our next gathering will be on Saturday,
September 9th at Logan’s Roadhouse, 211
Azalea Square Boulevard, Summerville. Mike
will be teaching the “Co-Rider” Seminar at
10am. This seminar counts for the Levels
Certification for those who do not drive a bike
or trike. Look for the side door to be open or
someone will be at the front door to let you in.
For our Chapter Gathering, arrive by 11am
and order your food before the meeting starts
at 11:30. The food will be served when we
finish. We hope to have some highlights of
Wing Ding, and one of our topics this month is
Chapter History. We need some help, so we
need some of you long timers to come out and
educate Mike, please. (He needs all the help
he can get).
Meet to Eats
We have two Meet to Eats scheduled for this
month and another Dessert Meet. The first
Meet to Eat will be on September 14th at
Moe’s Southwest Grill at 7800 Rivers Ave,
North Charleston. The next one will be on
September 28th at Smashburger at 210 Azalea
Square Blvd, Summerville. The Dessert Meet
will be on September 26th at Tastee Freez,
1110 Boonehill Rd, Summerville. We will eat
at 6:30pm for the Meet to Eats, and at
7:00pm for the Dessert Meet. Come on out,
bring a friend, and let’s have a great time.
Team Meeting
Our next Team Meeting will be on September
19th at Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, 1700 Old
Trolley Rd, Summerville. We meet at 6:30 and
break for dinner when the food is served.
Please let Mike know if you plan to attend.
The meeting is open to anyone who would
like to come see what it takes to run a
chapter, or who has ride or activity
suggestions they would like to share with the
team.
Fall Mountain Trip
Each year we put together two big rides, one
in the Spring, and one in the Fall. We are
happy to report the support for our Fall
Mountain Trip is doing well. If you don’t have
a room yet, you need to call quickly, as they
may all be gone. We have rooms reserved at
the Big Lynn Lodge, in Little Switzerland, NC,
for $115/night which includes a full breakfast
and dinner. So far, we have 10 people going,
so let Mike know if you are planning to go.
We will have two different rides on Friday,
and a leisurely ride on Saturday. We will
have fun all along the way.
If you would like to make reservations, or
would like to attend, contact Big Lynn Lodge
at 800-654-5232 or 828-765-4257.
Chapter Maintenance Day
We have some who have signed up already,
but you need to let Mike know if you have
maintenance, so we can clear enough room in
the garage (or you can work outside). We
will start the maintenance at 8am, and for
some jobs, we have to start early. Others are
quicker and can be worked in.
NC District Rally
Some are planning to attend the annual NC
Rally this year, in Waynesville, NC. If you are
interested, you will need to look for hotel
reservations, or there are several biker
friendly campgrounds in the area. Drop a
line to Mike if you plan to go for one, two or
the three days. Maybe we can ride up
together. It should be lots of fun.
Do you know someone with a
Goldwing or Valkyrie?
If so, why don’t you invite them to one of our
gatherings or Meet to Eats, and lets see if they
would be interested in signing up. You never
know, it may be the invite they have been
waiting for.

comb. That afternoon the barber sheared off all his hair..
On his second day, the Army issued Herman a toothbrush.
That afternoon the Army dentist
yanked seven of his teeth.
On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap...

Rain, rain, rain, and more rain. Seems like we’ve had a lot of rain lately. Be sure to check your tires
before each ride, looking for nails, cracks, and other wear, and don’t forget to check the tire pressure.
Some folks are getting excellent mileage out of their Elite 4 tires. Be sure to clean your windshield AND
helmet visor before you leave. It’s tougher to look through a dirty, wet visor or windshield.
Note: If you are new to Chapter ‘G’, or if we've missed your birthday or anniversary, please send an email to Mike Melton at [email protected]. Include your name, birthday (no year needed) and anniversary (also no year needed).
