Transcript of Southeast Fire Centre Newsletter Aug. 27
Fires Of Note:
Smoke will cover much of the area for the next couple days. This smoke is being blown north‐eastwards from fires burning in Washington, Idaho, California and Oregon. None of these fires are close to the Canadian / U.S.A. border. More information on the wildfires can be found at inciweb.org. There are currently no fires burning near any com‐munities or structures, however, a fire reported yesterday is burning north of Skookumchuck and is 1.3 hectares. Air tankers responded by laying a retardant guard around the fire, giving ground crews enough time to thoroughly dose the fire and construct hand guard. The fire is approxi‐mately one kilometre away from houses. Others recent fires in the Invermere Fire Zone have included the Brewer Creek fire, discovered on Aug. 20, 2012. The 25‐hectare fire is now 100 percent contained and is being mopped‐up. The Fenwick fire, also discovered Aug. 20, 2012 is now 100 percent mopped‐up and is now in patrol stage.
Fires to date:
So far this season, the Southeast fire centre has seen 157 fires which have burned 997 hectares. Of those fires, 40 where person‐caused and the rest are lightning‐caused.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:
Limited sub‐tropical moisture drifting north/NE from Oregon/Idaho is a small risk for isolated thunderstorms this afternoon, while the remnants of a cold front gradually pushing inland from the south coast presents a greater likelihood of isolated thunderstorms Tues‐day afternoon. Otherwise, an upper ridge of high pressure centred east of the Rockies will remain in control for dry, Fairly sunny and very warm conditions both days. Moderate southerly winds are also expected in some areas with a tightening pressure gradient aloft. Overnight recoveries will be in the poor to fair category at mid‐upper elevations. OUTLOOK: The dissipating cold front should maintain variable cloud, gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms with limited show‐ers Tuesday evening. An upper trough should follow in its wake for more extensive thunderstorms/showers and gusty winds on Wednesday, possibly lingering across the East Kootenay zones Wednesday evening.
