SOUTH WESTHOLDERNESS HERALDCommunity First Responders - Unsung heroes are recruiting

HEDON Community First Responders (CFR) are the local volunteers trained to save lives in the town. The Hedon scheme is one of the oldest responder schemes in Yorkshire, says Trish Kilner a Community Defibrillation Trainer with Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) It means the Hedon Responders have a great record of attending real medical emergencies under their belt.

Trish speaks enthusiastically about the seven-strong Hedon CFR team, but says they are far too modest about their achievements; They do attend incidents and they do save lives! she beams proudly.

The local volunteers who come from various walks of life including a despatch worker, garage sales, pyro-technician, lifeguard, care worker and model-maker will quite often be the first on the scene in a local emergency. A suspected heart attack or a condition which causes somebody to lose

consciousness, will result in the despatch of a 999 emergency ambulance, but YAS will also contact the local CFR member on duty. The fact that the responder lives locally means that she or he can be the first to arrive to offer assistance; their actions from then until an ambulance arrives could make a difference between life or death for the patient.

The first few minutes after an incident can improve survival rates or prevent the onset of a disability or more serious condition. More often the responder arrives at a scene to find the patient, family, friends, neighbours or passers-by in a state of high distress. The arrival of the responder in their distinctive uniform can serve to re-assure all concerned, while getting the patient ready for when the ambulance comes. Sometimes this might be acting to make the patient more comfortable in the knowledge that

their home will be locked up or relatives informed about their predicament.

Garry Cousins, a Hedon volunteer for ten years arrived at one incident to find the poorly lady didnt speak English and made several phone calls ensuring that somebody was available to translate for when the ambulance arrived. In another incident, adds Trish, the patient wouldnt get in the ambulance until she was re-assured her cat was going to be looked after. But actually this is just typical of some of the things done by the responders. Its not all life-saving, its the stuff behind the scenes ensuring the patient is comfortable before and after the ambulance arrives that is important too.

Each CFR carries a kit bag containing oxygen, an automated external defibrillator and is trained in basic life-support, CPR

WELCOME to the first edition of the Herald.

We hope to bring you news of whats happening in your local community each and every month. Through the Herald you can discover whats on? in the local village and community halls, the churches and the pubs and bars in the area. Also we want to bring you news on the opportunities available for you to get involved, help out or volunteer within your local community.

Whilst weve been active in bringing local news to the area on a daily basis for several years through the Hedon Blog and HU12 Online, the Herald is an exciting community enterprise in itself and our first venture into print. Putting this newspaper together has been quite a task which has involved learning new skills and a whole new terminiology to deal with the printing industry. But it has been a fun, and hopefully you will agree, a worthwhile project.

But we do want your help! Above all we want your news of events and activities taking place. Were also interested in hearing from anyone who wants to volunteer some time to get involved in making the Herald happen every month.

We want news gatherers, correspondents, and photographers in each area we cover to ensure weve got a ready supply of news each month. One idea is to bring people together as an editorial group once a month to decide on content and put together a mock-up of the newspaper which can be made ready to send to the printers. Volunteers with graphic design experience would be welcome too! Interested? Drop us a line.

Did you enjoy the read? If you have found out about an event through reading the Herald and enjoyed it - do please tell us about it.

Would you like to help us put the Herald together and publish it? Get in touch!

WELCOME... and wed like your help!

HEDFEST is to be the title of the new Hedon Festival to be held in August this year organised by a partnership of Hedon Town Council, St Augustines Church and Cornucopia. And at HedFest headwear is likely to be one of the themes running through the summer event: Artists, crafts people,

bands and children will all bring their own interpretation of HedFest

to the festival with a variety of hats, bonnets, caps, masks, veils, wigs and even giant puppet heads likely to make an appearance.

The festival will start across teatime Friday 14th August and continue all day Saturday from early morning to midnight and is described as a community-based festival with family entertainment.

It will aim to be a community initiative that draws upon all the local talent in the area. John Holtby from experienced festival organisers Cornucopia said that an essential first step is to organise a public meeting where anyone can express an

interest in getting involved and help shape the event. We want to hear from local singers, bands, artists, community groups, schools and local businesses - anyone who might want to participate.

The main streets in the town will be closed for the festival on the Saturday for family entertainment and we hope the local pubs and other venues will host festival acts too. We will also have specially-staged areas where we can bring entertainers, attractions and bands that wouldnt normally come to Hedon; entry in these areas will be restricted to those who buy a low-cost wrist band. The sale of these will help pay for these special acts. But the festival will also offer a whole variety of free events, such as street theatre, music, crafts workshops and a major carnival type procession through the town with floats.

The Hedon Festival is one of the latest projects to be funded through the East Riding of Yorkshire Councils High Street Fund with the partnership trio of Hedon Town Council, St Augustines Church and Cornucopia having been awarded 10,000 to stage the event. The fund aims to revitalise high streets and improve town centres through regeneration activity. Applicants are encouraged to think creatively about how to achieve the aims of the fund..

The 10,000 from the High Street Fund has delighted the organisers, but an appeal to local industry is to be organised to build on that amount. With additional sponsorship, said John Holtby we will be able to do so much more and help create a really wonderful and unique event that can become an annual feature in Hedon.

Those interested in getting involved in HedFest should in the first instance contact Hedon town Council at the Town Hall, St Augustines Gate, Hedon, HU12 8EX. The Town Hall is open from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. E-mail: [email protected] or tel: 01482 898428.

Join us at Hedon MuseumNo matter how many times you visit us at Hedon Museum, you will always find something new. Every year we have new and thought-provoking exhibitions, guaranteed to interest and fascinate.

At your local museum you can learn about how Hedon was once a port, older and more thriving than Hull, but our history does not begin in the middle ages. Artefacts found by a local archaeologist, on display at the museum, tell us that the area of Hedon has been inhabited for thousands of years. Alongside our local history, we hold exhibitions in the upstairs gallery which are constantly changing, and feature everything from commemorations and collections to beautiful pieces of art.

One of the most endearing things about Hedon Museum, is that it is run entirely by volunteers, so everyone involved has a passion for history and their town. You too can be a part of this. We are always looking for new faces to join us and contribute to the culture of our unique town. You dont need any qualifications, if youre over sixteen all you need to do is bring with you an interest in history and a desire to help.

As a volunteer you will greet visitors be able to speak with local and like-minded people about history and art. Visitors may ask for biscuits, coffee and a range of teas upstairs or may just wish to look around, but the important thing is that everyone is treated as a friend. This is a good way to develop or improve communication skills in a very relaxed atmosphere, where we will welcome both visitors and new volunteers with equal enthusiasm. We look forward to greeting you.

Hedon Museum is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 10pm to 4pm.

Public Appeal for an old 1920s bicycle!

Dr Martin Craven from Hedon Museum is seeking the bike to be used for an exhibition at the museum in the summer.

A new exhibition of the drawings and artwork of FS Smith is scheduled for the summer of 2015 which is the 90th anniversary of the artists death.

Frederick Schultz Smith was born at Worthing in 1860 but after coming to live in Hull he sketched and painted scenes of that city and the surrounding towns and villages, often travelling by bicycle into the Holderness countryside. He continued his artwork right up to his death in September 1925.

As part of the FS Smith exhibition, the museum wants to use the bicycle as a centrepiece; over it will be draped the artists coat and materials that he would have taken with him and used when he was out and about on his artistic travels.

The Museum would like to borrow the bicycle during the exhibition period, from Saturday 25th July Wednesday 9th September 2015.

Can you help? If you can, please contact Martin Craven from Hedon Museum Society on 01482 640081.

  • MEMBERS of Holderness Lions were delighted to induct another member earlier this year. The recent District Governor, Lion John Hall, was happy to badge up EdWIna a cute, cuddly, furry teddy bear!

EdWIna is the travelling teddy bear of the Preston Womens Institute. She is currently being photographed all over the district as a record of what the ladies of the WI get up to! The inspirational womens organisation aims to get at least 100 photographs of EdWIna demonstrating something that WI members do. Its all part of the WIs centenary celebrations nationally.

President of the Holderness Lions Barry Rojahn looks on as past District Governor Lion John Hall puts the membership badge on EdWIna held by Lion Eileen Smith Lion Eileen Smith, said: Unfortunately our new member EdWIna may not be available to attend many meetings as she is very heavily involved with the Preston WI and she is kept very busy attending all the things WI Members get up to. EdWIna did attend the Farmers Bingo session but bearing in mind that she is a vegetarian it is just as well she did not win any prizes!

Holderness Lions are sure that they must be the first Club to have a teddy bear as a member!

If you feel you, could assist the Holderness Lions in having fun, meals out, fund raising and taking part in the community, just come along to one of our monthly meetings, at the Hedon Royal British Legion Club (2nd Tuesday each month) at 7:15pm for a prompt 7:30pm start. Next meeting 12th May.

PENNIES will be raining down from high in Hedon on Thursday 28th May when the new Town Mayor makes his or her first public appearance and dutifully throws the Mayoral pennies to local children who scramble along the street collecting as many as they can! The Hedon Penny Throwing event is one of the most peculiar events in

Hedons civic calendar. Steeped in history, it is a parody of the days when Hedon was a rotten borough with people being offered money to vote for a particular Mayoral candidate in elections.Following their appointment the incumbent Mayor would pay-off his supporters. Today the event is a real family-fun occasion with children being thrown pennies by the new Mayor and the towns civic leaders and their guests. Children should get to Hedon Town Hall for 6:45pm.

Hedon Penny Throwing - a not so rotten tradition!

THE COFFEE SHOP at St Andrews Church, Paull is open for the Spring and Summer 2015.The Coffee Shop open every Saturday and Sunday from 2pm 4pm is the perfect base from which to start or finish your visit to the pretty village of Paull and the surrounding countryside including the Paull Nature Reserve. With coffee and home-made cakes served by the friendly volunteers, the Coffee Shop at Paull Church is always a real hit with both residents and regular visitors to the area.Note: There are weddings at the church on Saturday June 27th July 25th and Aug 8th, so unfortunately the Coffee Shop will not be open on those daysThere are opportunities to volunteer at the friendly church to help with the serving, baking and the cleaning and washing up on Coffee Shop days! Josie Foster from Preston was the very first Rural Community Safety Volunteer with Humberside Police and for the last 18 months she and her horse Phoenix have been patrolling the countryside (normally around Patrington where Phoenix is stabled) in a high visibility jacket communicating with the public, giving advice and being a conduit of information between residents and the police. Now the police are asking for more riders and their horses in the area to volunteer.

Josie says that being on horseback provides a vantage viewpoint not available to those on foot and in cars:

Before Christmas whilst riding in the Sproatley area it was obvious to me that lots of people were away on holiday, but had left valuables on plain view in gardens and visible through windows in sheds and garages. This offered a clear target for burglars.

I communicated this through to the police who were able to respond accordingly and issue crime prevention advice.

This is just one example where Community Safety Volunteers like Josie have helped the police. Other examples include reporting property dumped on the roadside which might be fly-tipped or stolen, observing and reporting activity that might contribute to criminal or anti-social behaviour, or just being aware of things happening in the local countryside that could potentially increase the risk of crime, cause a hazard to the public or constitute a fire risk.

Its also about creating positive contact with the police, says Josie I regularly ride by Patrington school to the delight of the children who call me Mrs Police Lady because of my distinctive uniform. People will stop and talk to me and Phoenix about lots of things, not just community safety issues but this helps build links with the police in what can be isolated communities.

Local Police Community Support Officer for the South West Holderness area PCSO Simon Cook agrees:

Its another valuable pair of eyes and ears in rural areas and helps provide reassurance and helps reduce the fear of crime. Theres certainly a role for Rural Community Safety Volunteers in this area.

Whilst Josie might live in the local area, her patch for patrols is normally in the Patrington area, and currently there are no local Rural Community Safety Volunteers in South West Holderness but all that might change with the increased media exposure about the role resulting from the appeal issued this morning.

Matthew Grove the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside organised the public appeal. He said:

Community Safety Volunteers are an important part of Humberside Polices engagement with the public. There are currently 166 volunteers who use their experience and knowledge to support the force and assist members of the public with information, crime prevention advice and reassurance. Since 2013 Humberside Police volunteers have also been working with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service to support key areas of their work.

Most of our volunteers are based in towns and cities, this campaign is to recruit volunteers based in rural areas, particularly those who would like to patrol the countryside and villages on horseback.

Neighbourhoods Chief Inspector James Glansfied has also commented:

The rural community safety volunteer scheme is an excellent opportunity for Humberside police to be visible and engage with some of our more rural communities by using volunteers who already live and ride in the area.

It is wonderful to see people combining their love of horse with public service. RCSVs are assisting the force deliver crime prevention advice and increase visibility among the farming, rural and rambling communities. Whilst putting out messages and raising awareness of risks the volunteers also feed back information as an integral part of our community policing teams. We are looking to expand the scheme into other parts of the force area and would welcome enquriries and applications through our website or 101.

Volunteers need to be competent riders (to an approved standard) and own their own horse. Volunteers have nothing in common with mounted police officers and will not be deployed to operational incidents. The role involves volunteering for a minimum of two 1-hour patrols a week.

Once accepted as a Rural Community Safety Volunteer training will be given specific to the role. Both horse and rider will be assessed by the British Horse Society before commencing the role.

For further information on how to become a Rural Community Safety Volunteer contact Joy Harvie, Humberside Police Community Safety Unit at email

IN SOME people, that childhood spirit for adventure is lost as we grow older. But for one Preston man the yearning to explore new places and discover new things - the imagination to want to go where few have gone before, the passion for finding out more about our natural world - just seems to have gotten stronger.

Prestons Paul Obernay who swims with whales As a child growing up in the small town of Renfrew on the banks of the River Clyde on the outskirts of Glasgow, Paul Obernay was inspired by the documentaries recording the undersea adventures of explorer and conservationist Jacques Cousteau and he was determined to follow in the footsteps of the famous French naturalist, so much so that by the age of 15 he had already learned to dive.

It was natural that jobs as a diver would follow. But as the requirements of the undersea exploration and inspection industry demanded trips to ever-increasing deeper waters and with increased safety concerns for human divers being paramount, the development of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) prompted Paul to train as a pilot and technician. And over the last sixteen years he has specialised in underwater robotic vehicles and now provides consultant and practitioner services around the world via his Benthic Pelagic Solutions Ltd company to the offshore oil, telecommunications and renewable energy sector

Being self-employed has allowed Paul (46) to diversify his interests and his latest project involves publishing the film Serenity of Whales which comprises unique footage of Sperm whales in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Dominica.

The film has been featured on ITVs Calendar news recently and is currently being displayed at Hull Maritime Museum in the citys Queen Victoria Square until summer 2015. There is free admission to the museum which is open from Monday to Saturday, 10am - 5pm and Sunday from 1.30pm - 4.30pm.

Adult Sperm whales grow larger than a single Decker stagecoach bus. To get an appreciation of their size, there is a Sperm whale lower jaw bone on display in the museum.

Paul describes Serenity of Whales: It consists entirely of underwater footage of Sperm whales, filmed on location in the once famous hunting grounds of the Commonwealth of Dominicas Caribbean Sea.

It runs for 30 minutes and is emotionally stimulating. It contains rare close-ups showing the characteristics of Sperm whales, their underwater swimming and diving pattern, social interactions, nursing of their young and a rarely seen defensive mechanism that the whales use when feeling intimidated or worried.

I can guarantee that you will have never seen footage of Sperm whales like this before.

Paul actually filmed the whales in December 2013, but his busy work schedule has meant that his post production efforts have had to be delayed until now. However, he believes that parts of his footage are unique revealing Sperm whale behaviour that perhaps has never been filmed before. A BBC film crew from the Natural History Unit filmed at the same location the year before, said Paul, but they were unfortunate in that they only managed to get a couple of minutes of footage.

Paul is keen that the film gets a wider audience, especially amongst younger people and in schools: The Sperm whale today remains on the IUCN Red List of endangered species as vulnerable, their numbers are only a third of what they once were, hence why video footage such as this is so rare.

I think it is important that children and young people get a chance to see the film of these intelligent and free-spirited mammals in their natural environment. Through developing an emotional connection with these magnificent creatures it will hopefully nurture an understanding, that as adults we need to take care about what we do and how it affects the natural environment. Weve got the power to make a difference; we are the guardians of the planet.

It would be fitting indeed to see Paul Obernay and his work serve to inspire local young people in the same way that Cousteau inspired him. The motto adopted by Cousteaus vessel the RV Calypso was Il Faut Aller Voir - We must go and see for ourselves. - its something that Paul Obernay has certainly taken to heart!

The film Serenity of Whales can be shown publicly for free for at schools and youth groups who just need to buy the DVD (5) from Paul or from the Maritime Museum in Hull.

For further information contact Paul Obernay at e-mail [email protected] or on 01482 896246.

The film Serenity of Whales is currently being displayed at the Maritime Museum in Queen Victoria Square, Hull until

summer 2015. There is free admission to the museum which is open Monday to

    Saturday, 10am - 5pm and Sunday from 1.30pm - 4.30pm.

The enthusiastic and friendly indoor bowls group meets every Wednesday from 7.30pm 9.30pm and Phil Brady one of the organisers says that its more than just a great team sport: Its a good night out and we have a real good laugh with a real social atmosphere. We play with teams of four people and its good gentle exercise.

People only pay 1.50 to play so it is good value and regulars from the village make up all of the members. However, playing is not limited to the village, says Phil, so if the people from outside the village would like to get involved and come and play they are more than welcome!

Want to give indoor bowls a try or play regularly? Give Phil Brady a ring for more information on 01482 897760 or just turn up at the Paull Village Hall on Main Street (near the front).

Newspaper sales each weekendThe Village Hall continues provides useful services to Paull - a village that has absolutely no shops or retail outlets.

One of these is the newspaper sales carried out every weekend. In a special collaboration with Becketts newsagents in Hedon, volunteers from the Village Hall have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the weekends newspapers are available for sale to villagers who would otherwise have to make their own arrangements.

The volunteers make sure the newspapers stall is staffed for three hours from 9am 12:00pm every Saturday and Sunday.

Whilst Saturday papers are economical in that unsold copies can be returned to Becketts and are still likely to be sold by them afterwards, the Sunday papers have to be sold or else the Village Hall foots the bill as Becketts is closed on Sunday afternoons.

Phil Brady is also one of the volunteer stalwarts who ensures that the service takes place every week. While they have about 40 customers everyday worth about 50 worth of busines, he says that its not about the money but providing a service that other people take for granted in larger places.

They have expanded what they provide; the newspaper sessions now also have greetings cards on sale (1.60) and there are few hundred books that have been donated to the Village Hall which are available for sale at only 20p a book! These are usually bought and then re-donated back to the Hall.

Where gaps exist in provision for the village, the community via its Village Hall is moving to fill these.

PAULL VILLAGE HALL is a perfect venue for meetings and functions. One such group that uses the Hall every month is the Hull, Beverley Borough & Holderness Branch of

the MS Society (Multiple Sclerosis).Meeting the second Monday each month 10am-1pm the group is for those with MS

and for carers of people with MS. There's a whole range of support services available but the group has lots of fun too with a variety of things to do at the meetings. This photo taken in August shows real smiles! It's a friendly Chat and Support group where there

is lots of laughter! The branch will be 60 years old in November 2015 and by then had aimed to raise

60,000 money for research - this in addition to what they would normally raise. But by the end of March the branch had already raised over 59,000!

If you need further information on MS or the group leave a message on the branch answerphone: 01482 846126.

A NEW day care centre has opened on Hedon Road which serves the local area. It aims to offer energetic and dynamic activities for young adults with learning difficulties.

Active Day Care Hull recognises that younger adults can be bored at day care centres with older or less able members, and so is offering a wide-range of lively activities to inspire and encourage younger people.

Rebecca Baxter, with 15 years prior experience of working in a local authority children and young peoples department, is one of the managers of the family run enterprise. She emphasised that the day service centre was trying to fill a gap in local services. Theres very little provision for young adults with learning disabilities. Having left education then its quite often the case that activities on offer are for people of all ages and conditions but like all young people theres a need to mix with people of your own age and own interests.

Ryan Cormack who attends the centre said, Its amazing how much better things are for me here.Tom Brown, Centre Manager, commented: Here at Active Day Care, as well as pool weve got table tennis, air hockey, a

Wii games room and have computers and wi-fi available. We also have a mini-bus and do and plan to do a variety of trips. Amongst the favourites are the National Railway and the Air Museums in York, Doncaster Dome swimming, Junction 32 and weve recently visited Leeds Royal Armouries which was wonderful.

Rebecca added: Those attending Active Day Care decide between them where they would like to visit the staff will prompt them with new ideas, but basically they set up their own programme of events. We aim it to be fun and stimulating. This is really a day care service centre but everyone here just calls it The Club.

Vicky Potter, whose daughter Becky attends the Centre said, My daughter has a better quality of life here, she loves History and Active Day Care is making a big difference to her. It isnt just a break but something worthwhile in itself.

HEDON Fitmums and Friends club meets every Monday at 7pm in the Marquee at the Haven Arms on Havenside, Hedon and new runners are invited to come from 6:45pm.

The sociable, not-for-private-profit running club in Hedon was set up nine months ago when Julie Fenton, a local mother, got inspired by her experience of Fitmums in Hull.

I got involved with Fitmums after having my son nearly two years ago, said Julie. I had put on a few pounds and was really unfit and I didnt like how it made me feel. Id joined gyms before, but like most people I had all good intentions for the first couple of weeks and then didnt go for the next 11 months. I wanted to do something where I could get help and support to keep me going.

I have run in the past and done the Jane Tomlinson 10k and the Race for Life but I must admit, I get very easily bored running on my own. I came across the Fitmums website and thought it looked like a fantastic idea. I went along for a run at the East Hull group and I was hooked!

Fitmums originally started in Cottingham in 2009 when Sam Barlow met up with a few other mums to go for a run but it has now grown into a substantial organisation. There are now five Fitmums and Friends Clubs; in addition to Cottingham, East Hull and Hedon, there are clubs in Beverley and a small club in Oxford. There are over 350 members of Fitmums who include men and women of all ages and abilities. Sam Barlow has been recognised with awards recognising her achievement in creating and building the Fitmums social running network.

Julie said: I rang Sam Barlow and told her I wanted to open a club in Hedon to serve people in the Holderness area, and the rest is history! At our first session at the beginning of August 2014, forty five people turned up to run. Since then the club has gone from strength to strength and we have seen a whole range of people come through the doors from people who have never run a mile in their life, to people who are training to run the Hull Marathon.

Its a really friendly and supportive environment regardless of your ability and because all of the money goes back into developing the clubs and providing post natal depression support, its running for a good cause too.

All of the run leaders are people who volunteer their time, and the same applies to me I receive no money from the club whatsoever, and just do it because it keeps me fit and I get such a buzz from helping and supporting others. I see people come into the club who cant run to the end of their drive never mind run a mile, and then we spend the time supporting them through their fitness journey and later watch them fly round a 2-mile circuit with a smile on their face talking about their next mileage goal. Its awesome!

Fitmums is unique as the club caters for people of all abilities. We use a system called shepherding which means

that regardless of how fast you run or what your ability is, the group sets off as a group and comes back as a group.

We have six different runs each night ranging from one to six miles and each mileage group is led by a qualified run leader who supports, motivates and encourages every member in their group as they go through the run. We have 36 different run routes at Hedon and also a set for the winter and the summer, so theres plenty to go at!

Membership for Fitmums is 35 for the year which is only 67p a week says run leader Paul Bucknall who helps manage the club with Julie. New runners are welcome to try up to three free sessions before deciding whether Fitmums and Friends is the right club for them and members can attend any Fitmums session across East Yorkshire.

You can also find Hedon Fitmums on Facebook to get feedback on each of the runs and sessions.Website: www.fitmums.org.uk/hedon

Managed by former Hedon Rangers senior player, Jon Storey, the Pythons were a new team last season that was formed when the original Hedon Rangers team became oversubscribed. Jon said: Theyre a great group of committed footballers and were very grateful to Haven Veterinary Groups continued support. Evie Beattie from Haven Vets said: We have been proud supporters of Hedon Rangers Pythons since they formed last year and were delighted to see them doing so well. Were pleased to able to support youngsters playing sport in the community.

South Holderness Cricket Club. First of Monthly Match Previews for the 2015 Season.

The revamped and progressive second season of the York & District Senior League together with its Eastern Conference, started on Saturday 25th April, with both of the Hedon based teams in action. In contrast to their eighteen matches last year, the Clubs first eleven will revert back to the normal twenty two fixtures this time.

This is as a result of both Cottingham CC and Sutton-on-Hull CC being promoted, with champions North Dalton CC, the Holderness based side Humbleton CC , Hull Ionians Coal Exporters CC, Hessle CC and Sutton on Hull seconds replacing their seniors, being drafted in to give a full complement of twelve teams in Division Four East. This is despite the fact that Hill Top CC, have sadly become defunct as a result of a shortage of players, most of their remaining members are joining forces with Hull CC.

The Ist Xl are due to travel to Well Lane, Willerby where they will lock horns with KirK Ella CC, Tom Wilkie again being their skipper, to kick start the campaign with stumps pitched at 1.30pm.

All rounder Rich Ingram, who took 18 wickets as well as his moderate aggregate of 363 last summer, will again captain the visitors, with his charges looking to improve their sixth position this time. Seasoned campaigner and all rounder Rich Rosindale figured with 428 runs easily being the highest run scorer for the Club, plus his 12 wickets, whilst the Towse brothers Adam (340) and Stewart (266) made valuable contributions. Hon. Secretary and Umpire Malcolm Forbes will again officiate with the senior team.

The incoming captain of the An Xl pace bowler Andy Berry, who has replaced Keiron Metcalfe at the helm, had a productive season with the ball last time out with some

27 victims, well supported by consistent batting from the experienced left hander Paul Brooks who had 351 runs to his credit, with Club Chairman Gary Chapman chipping in with 259. Incidentally, Berry is one of six members of his family name to turn out for the Club, beginning with his grand dad Arthur playing a few games, with the others being Mark, Neil, Paul and Glen. I believe that this is a record for the 133 year old Hedon based outfit.

As a result of the league reorganisation, this team has been promoted to the Conference division Two, despite finishing in fourth spot in the third division.

A mouth watering clash beckons for the Middle Lane outfit on Saturday 9th May, with a local derby when old foes Patrington II act as hosts at their attractive Southside ground, with a keen battle always in prospect here.

(Footnote: Its just a pity that theres no Football Club in Hedon - ex Drapers Lane, to report on too nowadays)

WEDNESDAY evenings at the Jubilee Suite, Alexandra Hall, Hedon is Martial Arts night for all age groups from five years old to adults. The classes are arranged by the RSP Martial Arts Club.

At the Hedon clubs classes on a Wednesday you get something unique says Paddy Cooney the chief instructor:Weve blended many years of experience in reality based and traditional arts together making a fun but

functional Martial Arts, teaching the students effective techniques in every range as well as the correct mindset to deal with conflict.

We also teach what we call soft skills which is pre-conflict awareness and avoidance techniques. Focusing on personal awareness can greatly reduce the odds of conflict.

Paddy certainly knows his stuff: Sensei Paddy Cooney literally from Japanese one who has gone before or teacher began his martial arts training 29 years ago influenced by his father Sensei Peter Cooney (who is currently ranked 8th Dan Black Belt with the World Martial Arts Council).

I began my martial arts training in 1986 in the traditional art of Kung-Fu, I was soon to progress into Wado-Ryu Karate and I now hold the rank of 2nd Dan Black Belt instructor with the Takeshi Karate Association as well as holding a 1st Dan Black Belt and Affiliated instructorship recognised by the British Combat Association and the Minnesota Kali Group.

Whilst blending together the world of martial arts and self-defence to create a different fun approach, the club is also keen to emphasise other positive aspects of its work with young people:

All our junior classes - the little warriors - are taught in a safe and friendly environment whilst improving the younger students confidence, communication, discipline, respect, good manners and fitness, says the Sensei.
