Greetings Shipmates!

Today (as I write this) is

the 224th birthday of the

US Coast Guard. A celebra-

tion that underlies the 75th

Birthday of the Coast

Guard Auxiliary that was in

June and that we are still celebrating. While these are im-

portant events we must all keep in mind the time, contribu-

tions and sacrifices that both Gold and Platinum organiza-

tions make to ensure that the boating public and our ports

and shores are safe.

This is no small undertaking and as we have heard over and

over the leadership and officers of the Coast Guard continue

to praise and appreciate our efforts.

We can’t rest on our laurels; we need to be diligent in our

efforts to increase VSC’s, Paddlesmart, and Boater Safety

Public education.

At this time of celebration, here are some fun facts courtesy

of The Official USO Blog.

The Coast Guard was founded on August 4, 1790, after

Congress commissioned the construction of ten ships to

help enforce federal tariffs and prevent smuggling.

The Coast Guard has two official flags: The Coast

Guard standard and the Coast Guard ensign.

Walt Disney created a special logo for the Coast

Guard’s Corsair Fleet during World War II, featuring

Donald Duck.

Members of the Coast Guard have served in 17 wars and

conflicts throughout U.S. history.

5. Anthony Christy was the oldest active serving Coast Guard member. The keeper of the Christiana

Lighthouse in Delaware, Christy died on duty in September 1862 at the age of 105.

6. Since 2003, the Coast Guard has been operating as part of the Department of Homeland Security.

7. In 1791, the Coast Guard launched its first cutter VIGILANT.

8. The first permanent Coast Guard Air Station was in Cape May, New Jersey, in 1926.

9. In 1967, the Coast Guard adopted the trademark red slash design – or racing stripe – that appears on

its vessels.

10. In 1941, the Coast Guard hired its first civilian women to serve in secretarial and clerical positions.

11. 241,093 Coast Guard members served during World War II.

12. “Semper Paratus” is the Coast Guard motto.

13. While many animals have served as mascots aboard Coast Guard vessels, Sinbad, a dog, is one of the

services most famous. He served on board the cutter CAMPBELL during World War II, keeping troops

company during their voyages.

14. The Coast Guard was referred to as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service throughout

the late 18th and the 19th centuries.

15. The Coast Guard has authorized a total of 43 battle streamers, which are attached to the Coast

Guard standard, replacing cords and tassels. They are carried in all ceremonies representing heroic

actions in all naval encounters from 1798 to today. Any Coast Guard unit may display the battle

streamers.

16. The Coast Guard refers to a vessel as a “cutter” if it’s over 65-feet long.

17. From 1942-1944, the Coast Guard had a championship hockey team called the Cutters that

played in the Eastern Amateur Hockey League, considered to be one of the most competitive

leagues of its time.

18. Until the Navy was re-established in 1797, the Coast Guard was the only naval service in the

country.

19. In 1918, sisters Genevieve and Lucille Baker were the first uniformed women to serve in the

Coast Guard.

20. President George Washington commissioned the first Coast Guard officer, Captain Hopley Yeaton,

on March 21, 1791.

21. The Coast Guard was featured in the 1996 featured film “White Squall” starring Jeff Bridges.

22. The oldest Coast Guard boat station is in Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

23. In 1967, the Coast Guard icebreaker EASTWIND became the first cutter to ever sail around Antarctica.

EASTWIND was also the first ship to circumnavigate Antarctica since 1843.

24. The Coast Guard core values are honor, respect and devotion to duty.

Scituate Flotilla Supports Opening of the Bay

Flotilla 12-8 provided a boating safety table at the Duxbury Opening of the Bay Family Day on Satur-

day 24 May. This event, which is organized each Memorial Day weekend by the Duxbury Bay Maritime

School, features tours of historic sailing vessels, family activities, music and food. The flotilla has supported

the event for many years. This year’s safety table featured demonstrations and information about buoyant and

inflatable life jackets.

This year the event displayed two his-

toric vessels replicas of the S/V FAME (home

port Salem) and one of two shallops (home

port Plymouth.) The original S/V FAME was

the first sailing vessel to be issued a letter of

marque and reprisal by the United States gov-

ernment during the War of 1812. The original

shallops were sailed around Cape Cod Bay by

the Pilgrims.

Division 12 Vessel Examiners at Hingham Shipyard

On Saturday 14 June vessel examiners from Division 12 were invited by Hingham Shipyard Marinas,

LLC to provide safety exams. Among those joining the team were Jay Prior and Ginny Gray, Flotilla 12-3,

Matt Mulvey, Flotilla 12-5 and Richard Flannery, Flotilla 12-8.

Cherie Rudzinsky, Marina Manager, a continued supporter of this partnership, opened the gates and

provided a list of boaters at the marina who requested vessel exams. More information about Hingham Ship-

Weymouth Fishing Festival

On Sunday 18 May Division 12 was represented at the annual Fishing Festival at Whitman’s Pond in

Weymouth, Mass. The event has been a continued partnership with the Whitman’s Pond Association. The

division provided public education and public affairs activities this year. The division is also a key contribu-

tor to the information kiosk at the boat ramp. Several hundred people again attended the event that offered

activities for children, fishing and safe boating education.

Arthur Mathews, Weymouth Town Council President, and member of Whitman’s Pond Association

said “The on-going partnership with the Coast Guard Auxiliary has been an important facet of our event and

a tremendous resource for our community.” Trish Pries, president of the Whitman’s Pond Association

thanked the Auxiliary for the safe boating materials and spreading the “Wear It” message to the children.

Pries joined Tyler Hall, son of Craig Hall, Auxiliarist in Flotilla 12-3 in passing out “Wear It” stickers and

“Life Jacket Leaders” campaign materials.

Touch a Boat Hingham Harbor

On Saturday 31 May, the division supported the annual Touch a Boat event held at Hingham Harbor,

Hingham, Mass. The program was from 0930-1230. Ginny Gray, an FSO-HR with Flotilla 12-3 again provid-

ed “liaison” between the division and event organizers.

The event offered a free pancake breakfast, demonstration of life jacket fittings, a lobster boat and ex-

hibit from the New England Aquarium.

The division provided a safety table and information about mission and activities of the Auxilairy.

Annual Time Capsule Ceremony The annual Braintree Time Capsule ceremony held on 4 July has become a traditional event for the Division 12 color guard. The patriotic event draws many from Braintree and surrounding towns. Division Color Guard Returns to Medford Invitational

On Sunday 17 August 2014 members of Team Coast Guard's Division 12 Color Guard participated for

the third time in the Medford Invitational Tournament in Malden, Mass. The baseball tournament annually

recognizes individuals with special needs from the Greater Boston area.

This year more than 75 individuals and family members took part in an exciting game. Auxiliarists

Kevin Ritchie and Matt Mulvey, Flotilla 12-5 joined with ME3 Scott Borgnis and EM3 Mathew Lotito from

Sector Boston to form a unit. The Malden Police Department Color Guard was also invited to participate and

combined with the Team Coast Guard unit to form an 8 member unit. The unit provided a solid joint presen-

tation that was widely acknowledged by the viewing public.

Division Vice Commander’s Message

Greetings Shipmates:

This summer has been unusually busy for me and my family. We are in the midst of selling our home

in search of a new place to call home—on the South Shore of course. We actually spent more family time va-

cationing this year than in the past. My professional responsibilities required more travel than I have had in a

few years, but as Labor Day approaches I plan on re-focusing on what I want to accomplish during the remain-

der of 2014.

Looking Ahead

At the same time I find my Auxiliary responsibilities encompassing more “paperwork” than mission-

driven activity, such as vessel inspections, instruction and marine safety. I will still meet my qualifications and

need to keep up with mission reporting (I hope everyone is on top of that too.) However, in looking forward

and checking the calendar I noticed that district elections are less than a month away. That means our division

election is not that far away, and after that the important flotilla elections. For the last two years (well almost)

Mitch Paine and I have served as your “bridge” for Division 12. A new team will be elected to lead, challenge,

support and encourage the membership to continue the work you do for Team Coast Guard. Although this is

not my last message, we have one more division newsletter scheduled, I think its important to thank Mitch, the

elected officers, staff and members for the exemplary work you all do for the boating public. At the same time,

I challenge our members to think about enhancing their skills sets, considering staff positions and consider a

willingness to serve as an elected officer at the flotilla and division level.

The Mission

Our division has been involved in two important activities in 2014, the continued Wear It New Eng-

land campaign, and the Auxiliary's 75th Anniversary, but the regular mission activities our members are in-

volved with are the foundation for our long-term success. Take the time to dedicate your skills toward mission

-critical areas. Work with your staff officers and elected leaders, who can support your interests and training.

Fellowship

The division has planned a fantastic opportunity for fellowship, a picnic hosted by the Hull Lifesaving

Museum. This was an idea that David K. Clinton, our IPDCDR, conceived and with a team of folks has

planned for 24 August (see calendar page.)

Last, as we approach Labor Day weekend lets remember that recreational boating season continues for

many, but with cooler weather we should be cognizant of the changes on the water and increased awareness

that the weather can be more unpredictable. A message for our members and the boating public.
