South Seattle Community College “Serving the campus since 1977” July 8, 2009 Start Here, Go Everywhere! Dr. Yilin Sun, faculty member in the Basic & Transitional Studies Division, has returned from Russia where she was a plenary speaker at two international conferences in June. She spoke at the Yakut TESOL Summer School in Yakutsk, Siberia and also addressed the Annual Conference of the Russian National Association of Teachers of English in Kazan, Russia. She reports that attendees “were particularly excited to hear the important contributions that non-native English speaking English educators made to the ELT field worldwide.” From June 29-August 7, South is hosting 19 students from Suwon Women’s College (SWC), near Seoul Korea. After a month studying English in the IEP, with a special English for Nursing class, the students will spend two weeks visiting sites including the Nikkei Concern, Veteran’s Hospital, and Highline Medical Center. The students are staying with West Seattle host families and are accompanied by Professor Myeong-Seon Lee, Nursing Instructor from SWC. SWC has been sending groups of students annually since 2005. Welcome New Staff!Damaris Valdez, Women’s Center CoordinatorDamaris, a former Women’s Center staffer, is the new Women’s Center Coordinator, replacing Cara Pierson who left in late May to pursue a doctorate of Nursing at the University of Washington. A New York native, Damaris earned her AA degree from South in June 2008, and plans to attend Evergreen College in Tacoma to earn a bachelor’s degree, combining social justice and antiracist teaching and learning with supporting women’s health.

CAmPus Security Reports

June 2A female student reported she was verbally and physically harassed on the way to class by a male student she did not know. She was able to move away and get to class. An investigation is continuing.

June 5A student got into a heated argument with a security officer about the student’s vehicle parked without a permit. The officer said the student acted in a threatening manner and used profanity. The student got into his vehicle and left campus.

June 8A female student reported that while in the women’s locker room in the fitness center she saw a man stick his head through a window and attempt to gain entrance. When the man saw the student he backed out and departed. Security later checked and locked all the room windows.

June 9A student reported that while he was working in the Library his cell phone was taken from his backpack, when he was away for a short time.

June 10Security was told that a male student aggressively asked a female student for a date. After repeated refusals, he grabbed her cell phone in an attempt to get the number. A staff member intervened, stopped the behavior and escorted the student from the area. The incident was referred to the Vice President Student Affairs.

June 17A student reported that while studying in the Library her iPod was taken, when she left the area for a short time.

June 18A community member said she received calls from someone claiming to be from the college, asking for credit card information, in order to enroll a student. An investigation is continuing.

A student reported that her car was broken into sometime during commencement exercises. Stolen items included a wallet, credit card, cash and identification.

WorkSource Offers WorkshopsSouth’s WorkSource Center has been retained to conduct 70 job search and résumé workshops at the Seattle Public Library’s downtown Central library between July 15, and December 15, 2009. The office has also partnered with the Delridge Community Center in West Seattle to deliver résumé and online job search workshops. In addition to brand visibility, the workshops enable the college to employ an instructor whose hours have been reduced due to budget issues, and also frees a small amount of money from the state budget that can be used by the college to fund other critical needs.

From the Foundation13th Year Promise Scholarship Success! The inaugural year of the 13th Year Promise Scholarship is complete and the first class of 13th Year students had an impressive fall-spring retention rate of 85%. Nearly 50 graduates of the Cleveland High School Class of 2009 have already applied for the second year of this scholarship.

Foundation Board Honors Faculty and StaffAt each meeting, the Foundation board presents Appreciation awards to faculty, staff and students. Staff Scholarship WinnerThary Khun, Information Technology Specialist 4 in Computer Services, is the recipient of the Association scholarship. Thary is working on his BAS in Information Technology and Administrative Management at Central Washington University, Des Moines Campus.

Reminder - Revised Summer Hours This summer South is again on a revised weekly operating schedule. The college will officially close at 1 pm on Fridays from July 10 through September 4. The purpose is to try to reduce utility costs and at the same time offer employees more flexible summer schedules.

Student AnthologyCopies of the 2008-2009 Student Anthology, Self Portrait, are available in JMB 135. The annual publication features imagery, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry in a beautiful, full-color magazine format. The anthology was edited by students Casey Casallo, Kimiko Foz, Meagan Waskom, and Karah Namur, under the guidance of faculty advisor Holly Gilman, with layout and design by PIO graphic designer Glenn Gauthier.

Field of DreamsDean Mike Ryan regularly bats 1.000 in an over-40 baseball game held annually at Safeco Field. Word is that he’s got some pop, but is shaky on defense.

We Love Pears – Anjou?Sixth-quarter Pastry student Nicole Mau, pictured below with fellow students (left) and with mother and grandmother (bottom right) was the grand prize winner in the national USA Pears Student Culinary Competition held in Portland, Oregon. One of three finalists selected from hundreds of entrants from around the country, Nicole’s “Red Anjou Poire Frite” bested her competition from Texas Culinary Academy and Florida Culinary Institute. Along with a plaque, she earned a $2500 award for herself and $250 for the college. Nicole was cheered on during the 3½ hour competition by her family, friends, and Pastry Chef Instructor Jean-Claude Berger. After graduating at the end of this month with an AAS in Pastry, she begins her “dream job” as a pastry chef at Kaspars.
