Skai and Nate

by Nat Rantala and Skyler Strach

Prologue

Father and I walk through the forest. We stride on a high ridge beside a babbling creek; it whispers to the rest

of the wood. My father rambles about his research and his new findings that support his theories. I have heard

all of these before, but today he seems more enthusiastic. There is a light in his eyes that I have never seen

before. His confidence is even convincing me of his nonsense.

"Father, how much farther do we have to hike?" I ask.

"We are almost there! Just be patient," He almost seems giddy. I've never seen him quite this happy. The smile

on his face is something I haven't seen in a while and it's refreshing, though I am growing worried.

We have been hiking for hours and I don't know where we are. The sun has already disappeared behind the

looming trees, and only orange rays shoot through the scraggly pines. The pine needles splinter the red sunset.

"Father, we aren't going to make it home before dark," I say as I scratch my temple in concern.

"I'm sorry, we can't turn back now; we are going to have to make camp," my father shouts back to me and

leaps up onto a higher ridge. “We are almost there.”

"What! You said we would go home. We didn't pack anything for the night. And where is ‘there’?" I protest.

I'm not excited about staying the night out here, this far out in the woods, where I've never been. I don't want

to admit it but I am somewhat scared.

Something doesn't feel right. I don't know what's making me feel this way, and it's unnerving. I am never

scared of the forest... Never! Everything seems fine and ordinary; I just feel this way. Maybe I didn't eat

enough and I'm just hungry. Yeah, that's what it is... I'm starving.

I throw my pack down and rummage through it for some food. In my haste I tear a zipper and supplies tumble

out.

"Ugh!" I moan and shove everything back in and try to fashion a new tie to keep it closed.

"Father?" I call without looking up. He must be just beyond the ridge. He's not responding. I glance up and I

can't see him. He probably ventured out of earshot, though that strange feeling was creeping up my gullet now

and solidifying.

Suddenly, I hear this horrible scream. It ripples through my bones, chilling my steaming blood. It echoes

through the tops of the trees and bounces back to my ears. It is shrill, pure agony. Over and over again it

sounds and I fear I know what it is.

I race to the top of the ridge, abandoning my pack. I stumble on the steep edge, but claw and pull myself to the

top… No, this can’t be real.

In the dip below the ridge, at the bank of the river there it is. A huge beast stands near the murky water; its

back is turned to me. Another crouches on the other side of it, and something is between them. Father! He

flails about and struggles hopelessly. The telltale scream immerses me in a terror so strong it numbs my body.

I am stunned. I can't bring myself to do anything. Come on, Roland! Go save Father! My mind screams at me

but I can’t move. My legs thrumb and are eager to sprint away, to save myself. My heart. My heart is what

keeps me anchored to this ridge. I want to scream for my father, run to him, rescue him, but I can't. My heart

and mind battle my body, fight or flight, but it comes to a stand still and all I am able to do is watch. That

thought alone terrifies me all the more.

I will my eyes to look away, but they don't budge. I watch involuntarily as they rip viciously at him. I hear the

stomach churning cracks and squelches. Blood splatters and is flung with red chunks. I feel cool drops on my

face and they drip down my cheeks as crimson tears. He screams uncontrollably, I think he's saying my name.

"Roland-," It becomes choked; a clogged scream,

The beast roars in frustration and drives its massive arm down like a sledge hammer. There is a dull squelch, a

earth quivering thud, and my father screams no longer. His body doesn't thrash about as it did.

My airway clenches as if the beast is ripping my throat out as well and I fight, I battle myself. I struggle within

my own bonds, screaming..... My father no longer moves, as my heart is finally dislodged from its cavity and

torn to shreds.

I lay as still as the dead and listen. The humanoids’ bellies rumble with laughter. Laughter? They bellow back

and forth between each other. Were they speaking? It isn't possible! It can't be true! My father’s nonsense,

studies, theories, and ventures were true. My father always believed.

My shoulder is grasped with crushing pain. I am thrown back from the ridge and my body slams against a tree.

I crumble down and my vision is knocked off balance and everything wobbles in double. A third humanoid

stands before me. He roars with laughter, then turns his head and speaks to the others by the river.

"Haha! I've found another! Disgusting man!"

The beast grips me by my shoulder again and I wail in agony. I can feel the bones shift and snap, the pain is

excruciating and surges through my blood. It lifts me in the air as if to show the others.

"That is not what we are concerned with. He is merely a youngling. Let him go. Our job is finished!" The

larger of the two roared and thundered with laughter, the other two joined in.

I wriggled in its grasp. The beast throws me down the trail where I tumble down a steep hill and off into the

forest. Branches pierce my clothes like needles and finally, I am stopped. I plow into a downed tree and my

head smashes against it. A searing ache stings my shoulder as well as all of my right upper body. I roll off it

and lie on my back, and stare into the darkening sky. Continued on page 6……

Inexpensive Christmas Gifts: Bekah and Sarah H., Skai and Nate by Nat Rantala and Skyler Strach

Sharpie DIY Painted Mugs Buy some white cups or mugs. Pick a Sharpie. For long-lasting results,

choose oil-based paint Sharpies. Regular Sharpie ink can come off even after baking.

Start drawing. Dry it out. Let your mug dry for a few

hours or overnight before placing it into the oven. You can also draw over it again if you'd like to make sure the pattern doesn't come off in the wash. If you draw over it again, be sure to leave it out to dry again before baking.

Bake it. Bake the mug in the oven for 30

minutes at 350°F. Remember to place the mug in the oven before it heats up and leave it in until the oven cools completely so there won't be any cracks. You can choose to bake the mugs twice to really set in the Sharpie drawings.

Care and wash. Hand-wash the mug

gently instead of throwing it in the dishwasher, as a dishwasher washer may

ruin the design.

Skai and Nate (cont.)

Hikers find my pack strewn about on the trail and search

for its owner. They eventually find me groggy, barely

conscious and injured. They asked if there was anyone else

with me. All I could do was nod and let the tears wash his

blood from my face. They decided to not stay any longer

but to get me to safety.

I wake up in a white room with a shattered shoulder and a

severe concussion. Large men stand by and ask me

questions. I simply answer them but I can't imagine telling

them the truth. A 14 year-old telling the authorities that his

father was killed by 15 foot beefy humanoids is absurd.

I get lost in re-imagining the horrid beasts. They had an

outer armor of some sort that was rough and a deep brown

or gray. Under that they had a palish brown skin. They

bulged, overly obese, though it was probably brute muscle

under the layers of blubber. Their faces were the worst

part, their lips and mouth stained vermillion and their

features looked as if they were smashed in the face with a

boulder, their beady white eyes were the most haunting;

pure white though glossed with a skweemish yellow. It

growls at me and I am shocked back into the brilliant room.

I lie and say that it was a bear that did it. I also tell them

that I fell from a tree and shattered my shoulder and hit my

head. They look at me quizzically but I turn my eyes down.

They assume I've had enough, but I actually don't. It'll

never be enough, until I have hunted down those beasts and

killed them. My father was right with his research. The

creatures, the things of myths and legends are real... And

those were what he called 'ogres'.

Music – Twenty One Pilots

Crock Pot Buffalo Chicken Dip

Formed in 2009, Twenty One Pilots have taken the music world by storm. With their unique sound, they have brought something new to the table. The two-man band use their deep lyrics mixed with funky beats to create music for anyone to enjoy.

Released on May 15th of this year, their new album, Blurryface, has brought the band major success. From selling out tours to

having singles on the radio, the Columbus duo has already

achieved their dream. Signing to their record label in 2012, they have released two albums through the record label, Fueled by Ramen, and two albums they had released on their own.

The band writes music to “make people think,” as well as encourage people to enjoy life and find happiness in what

they do. With such positive views, twenty one pilots have earned themselves a dedicated fan base, also known as the skeleton clique. These fans are able to receive a personal connection with the band through their interactive concerts and meet and greet sessions. When coming across music that is so unique and meaningful, it’s hard not to join the clique!

Directions: Drain canned chicken and put in medium sauce pan. Add hot sauce and cook on medium until heated throughout. My personal favorite is Frank's hot sauce.

Add cream cheese and stir until blended thoroughly. Add ranch dressing and mix.

Add 1-1/2 cups of cheddar cheese and heat for a few minutes until mixed and melted. Pour the dip into the crock pot and sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on the top. Keep heated on low.

Serve.

good musicians should

recognition."-Matthew

Gonzales
