Why do people Volunteer?

Bobby Armstrong, Program Manager, SOS Volunteer Centre

Many people find themselves in need at some point in their lives, today you may be the person with the ability to help, and tomorrow you may be the recipient of another’s volunteer effort. “Doing good” has been ingrained in us since our formative years. Disconcerting news stories on many issues we cannot influence or control bombard us daily, so volunteering becomes a proactive way of helping our neighborhood, community and the world. People volunteer to be needed, share a skill, get to know their community, to demonstrate a commitment to a cause or belief, gain leadership skills, or even due to pressure from a relative or friend. Society plays an important part in a person's life. From the day of their birth till the day the die, surroundings influence a person's behavior and actions. It affects them both physically and mentally. It helps in honing their behavior and character. For this reason, giving back to the community is extremely necessary. The favors that society has given to us should be returned in a positive way. We usually complain about the problems that our surroundings are victim of. But why not look at the underprivileged people in our surroundings and observe what we have that they don't. Then we can try to pass that on to them so they can live a better life. A growing body of evidence shows people who volunteer live longer, healthier lives, according to a research review of 32 studies conducted by the Corporation for National & Community Service. The report cites evidence suggesting that volunteering enhances a person’s social networks and has a positive effect on social psychological factors, such as an individual’s sense of purpose, which in turn lead to better physical well-being. The studies show volunteering can be particularly beneficial to older individuals. Researchers suggest that may be because younger volunteers sometimes feel “obliged” to volunteer because of work or parental responsibilities, whereas older volunteers are more likely to donate their time because they find the task purposeful. Researchers have likewise found volunteering helps individuals with chronic or serious illness. In one study individuals suffering from chronic pain experienced a decrease in pain intensity, depression and their levels of disability when they began helping other chronic pain sufferers. Similarly, a Duke study of individuals with post-coronary artery disease, found those who volunteered after their heart attack reported less despair and depression and a greater sense of purpose in their lives. When it comes to volunteering there’s very much a “you get more than you give,” dynamic, says Jenelen Dulemba, director of volunteer and older adult membership services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare. “That’s the message volunteers share with me all the time. That is the ‘paycheck’ of volunteering. The internal reward and satisfaction feeds your soul so to speak.” The SOS Volunteer Centre (www.volunteercentre.info) has over 100 Volunteer Opportunities posted with 40 community service organizations. If you cannot find something you like, and would like more help, make an appointment to discuss your interests and experience. Call 1-888-576-5661 or e-mail [email protected]. Okanagan Gleaners

Okanagan Gleaners Society was founded in the autumn of 1994 by a small group of Christian believers in the South Okanagan Valley, out of a growing concern for the hungry people of the world. Fruit and vegetable prices in the Okanagan were sorely depressed. Meanwhile, they saw good food being wasted, un-harvested in the fields and orchards. Confronted daily by media images of people starving in other countries they felt a responsibility to salvage this God-given abundance of food. Thus the vision for Okanagan Gleaners was born. With God’s leading they could save the surplus food and send it to the poor and needy! The gift of food would help extend the hands of missionaries reaching out to a hungry and dying world. Skilled Volunteers: We are always in need of skilled volunteers and tradespeople to keep the plant maintained and operating. Please take a look at our list and please let us know if you can volunteer your skills at Gleaners. Commercial Truck Drivers: Okanagan Gleaners owns a Peterbilt highway tractor and two highway reefers to collect and temporarily store fresh and frozen vegetables. If you have a commercial class license and can volunteer to drive within British Columbia and Alberta for one or two days a month, you will be keeping our supply chain operating. We also use a five-ton and a one-ton truck to make local pick-ups. Forklift Driver: Okanagan Gleaners has a number of electric and propane forklifts which we use to move large bins and bags of produce around the site to keep our volunteers cleansing and chopping. If you have a forklift certificate and can volunteer a few days each month, you will help us continue operations. Sewing enthusiast and Plant Janitorial: Our volunteers need aprons every day which need to be mended from time to time. If you are handy with a needle and thread, we would like you to help out for an hour or two once a month. We are also looking for some janitorial work for our plant. Equipment Operators: Okanagan Gleaners operates a number of machines to chip, chop and clean the variety of vegetables that arrive each day. We operate equipment to clean our trays and move equipment and produce around the site. If you can safely operate processing machinery and you can volunteer a few days each month, you can help us to continue our operations. For a full listing of volunteer opportunities visit http://www.volunteercentre.info/member/okanagan-gleaners/ For more information contact Carolyn Ellis at 250-498-8859 or [email protected]

We deliver services with the support of local partners including educational institutions, employers, and community organizations. Our multi-lingual staff members provide interpretation in 12 languages and an additional 8 languages are available through our professional networks and volunteers. Through our community connections services, we match clients and volunteer mentors based on criteria such as similar interests, age, professional background, and occupation. Although the majority of the matches are catered to improve language skills, these matches also provide an avenue for the participants to build friendships and connections. Mentors support and encourage mentees in their goals, connect them to established Canadians, expose them to different perspectives, and share information on:
