Definition of Aromatherapy
“Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of plant-derived, aromatic essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being. It is sometimes used in combination with massage and other therapeutic techniques as part of a holistic treatment approach.”

What are essential oils?
• An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant.
• Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer.
• The chemical composition and aroma of essential oils can provide valuable psychological and physical therapeutic benefits.

Smell Memory
• The brain has the ability to store smell and memory together in the hind brain.
• The French novelist Marcel Proust described this process in his novel ‘Remembrance of the Past’
• Using blends of aromas not single smells
