Hello Once Again, and welcome to the August addition of the High Tide.

If you haven’t heard the news, the fisher men and women of the club did

an excellent job this month. While the fishing was good we had a few

members win some tournament money for Salmon-A-Rama. We moved

into the following week with the Fish on Fish Off. For those of you who

didn’t realize, this fishing tournament is South Shore Yacht Club vs South

Milwaukee Yacht club. While we usually do very well, last year we gave

up the trophy to South Shore. This year the weather changed for the worse

bringing in abnormally warm water. To add insult to injury, we had a large

portion of our fleet in dry-dock for repairs. With a little bit of luck, and a

whole lot of skill, we were able to bring the trophy back to South Milwau-

kee. I would like to thank everyone that was involved and especially thank

the folks at South Shore for their hospitality.

The next great fishing event of the month was our annual powder puff

fishing contest. This contest benefits Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Fund.

We had a great turn out and a whole lot of fun. I’m certain once the num-

bers come in we will be able to meet or exceed last year donation. I be-

lieve it was a great success and I would like to thank everyone that donat-

ed their time to make it come together.

For the non-fishermen, it appears that The Red Neck Beach has been busy.

I have been down to the club several times recently and the lot was

packed, most of the boats in the harbor and I just wondered where every-

one is. I’m really thinking that it is time for this guy to buy one of those

beach toys, raft, jet ski, house boat, LOL…

We still have some exciting events coming up, Steak Night followed by a

hangover brunch and Slip Shots. Come down to the club and have a little

fun. More news and dates for these great events and several others to fol-

low.

One last reminder, if you are interested in getting involved with the Board,

let Mike Gengler know. The elections for the Board Members are at the

Annual General Membership Meeting in October.

One of the things I learned was if the fishing gets a little on the slow side, a good-luck beer might get them to bite. Ray Hollnagel

WHO’S WHO OF SMYC LIFETIME MEMBERS Howard and Mary Oudeans

Joined: April 1, 1970

I would like to tell you about two more of our SMYC Lifetime members, Howie and Mary

Oudeans. Why you ask? Because the Lifetime members I have introduced you to and will contin-

ue to talk about (because I am good at that) are responsible for the heritage you see about you:

• A club house with showers and bathrooms, accessible 24/7 (no porta potties out in the parking

lot anymore);

• A beautiful large gazebo with gas grills;

• The “gas dock piers” - used to be 2 piers where the cement ended on the east end of the gas

dock;

• Traditions like “steak night”, St Paddy’s Day parties, Pig roast, Shrimp Boil.

OK I am digressing. Howie and Mary are Life Members of the South Milwaukee Yacht Club and

have been long time residents of South Milwaukee. Their home overlooks the club at the top of the

hill. They are always nearby.

Howie, Mary and son, Brent have had several boats over the years. Most recently, Up and Atom

now on the gas dock and before that, the Cora II, a 25 foot Carver, which was docked out on the

outer east wall with Butch Webb, George Gilmore, Don Minch, and Hud. I was recently reminded

that the The Cora II was named after Howie’s grandfather’s schooner which used to sail the great

lakes hauling cargo. The water is in his blood!

Howie was known for wearing many hats: SMYC Commodore (1989), construction/carpenter,

Barber but most memorable Pirate! Howie have made an annual pilgrimage to Port Washington

for Pirates’ Days for many years. He made an awesome pirate and Mary, a beautiful wench!

The Oudeans continued another tradition for several years, started by a past member, John P.

Schultz. They would sell tickets for an all you could eat Shrimp Boil. Sometimes going through

as much as 500 pounds of shrimp! Then there were the bagpipers he brought in for St. Patrick’s

Day. Tradition wrapped in fun and good times.

When they were not boating there were always Bikes (Motorcycles) and I remember a trailer with

snowmobiles in the yard too. Well, I don’t want to tell you everything because I would like you to

introduce yourself to Howie and Mary and learn about them yourself. In fact, stop and take a look

at the bell, in the bar area, the one that they ring when someone buys a round. Let me know what

you learn!

Take time to meet your fellow members and boating neighbors. Relax, have fun and be safe out on

the water!

SMYC Summer Picnic Update – July 14th We would like to send out a huge THANK YOU for our assistants with putting the Picnic together. Josh Haase and Gil Magolin did an outstanding job as our grill masters (and they even learned a few things...). Andy and Colleen Martin, Katy Santos, and Jeff Ward made everything go very smoothly. We also want to thank all of our SMYC’ers who attended and brought dishes to pass. Not only do we have a great place to be, but we have some of the best cooks on this side of Lake Michigan!
