PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
It is with great pleasure that I present the 2020Annual Report for South Halls Head PrimarySchool.
2020 was a year that presented challenges likeno other– the start of the global pandemic,Covid-19. From March, our school started to lookand feel very different. With the uncertainty ofrisk and varying health advice, studentattendance declined throughout the month of
March, with only 3% of students remaining at theconclusion of the term.
Staff demonstrated amazing resilience as theypulled together, rising above the challenges, toensure a safe and continuous learning programfor all. They worked collaboratively to upskill inonline teaching platforms and redesigned theirlearning programs to run online for Term 2.Support was also provided for families withoutaccess to ICT through the development of workpackages. Staff worked as a team to make,organise and distribute the packages throughdrive through work package collections.
As Term 2 commenced, health and governmentadvice stated it was safe for students to return toschool. However, school had not returned tonormal with many restrictions still in place tokeep students, staff and community safe.Parents were not allowed onsite, there were noassemblies, excursions and incursions, camps,interschool sports or large gatherings of any kind.Things were different at South Halls Head,however the staff did a wonderful job keepingparents informed and students feeling safe andhappy whilst at school.
Despite the challenges that came with Covid-19, there were many positives including:• Gated entry saw an increase in student
independence and resilience as they walkedthemselves to and from class each day.
• With limited activities and interruptions,students were able to refocus on theirlearning, assisting us to make up for lostlearning time during Term 1.
• Border closures (both state and Australiawide) saw our attendance rates increase withfamilies unable to travel interstate or overseasthroughout the school term.
2020 saw the second of our three year (2019-2021) Business Plan cycle come to fruitionfocusing on our three priority areas of Success forAll Students, Excellence in Teaching and
Community Partnerships. Despite theinterruptions throughout the year, we madepositive gains in our progress towards many ofour targets.
Staff continued our focus on improving studentoutcomes, further refining skills in explicitteaching, focusing on student engagement andunderstanding within lessons. Our review of ourEnglish teaching practices continued with furtherstaff upskilled in programs such as Let’s Decode,Heggerty Phonological Awareness and SoundsWrite. This focus will continue into 2021.
Even with restrictions on gatherings, ourcommunity found ways to come together. Our‘Singing Wheel’ is a fine example of how wemodified our school events to enable ourstudents and community to celebrate together.
Our success in a tumultuous year like 2020, is dueto the continuing efforts of the whole schoolcommunity. The staff worked extremely hard indifficult circumstances to ensure continuity inlearning and stability for all students.
As Principal, I am extremely proud of how wecame together throughout 2020 to continue ourjourney of improvement, and I am excited tobuild on our progress throughout 2021 to provideoptimum opportunities for success for all.

2020 was certainly a year like no other with our community and families facing challenges likenever before. South Halls Head PS were not immune to the interruptions stemming from Covid-19, however the manner in which the restrictions were managed by the staff was outstanding.Communication was timely and informative, ensuring our community knew what was going onand how the school was managing the ever-changing Covid restrictions put into place. Thisassisted in making the community feel safe and comfortable whilst operating in what wasbecoming our new ‘normal’.
The school board had minimal disruptions due to the pandemic, missing only just one meeting.In February, we reviewed our Terms of Reference to clarify and refine our roles, functions andprocedures.
We maintained our focus on supporting school improvement, with regular updates and reviewsof school performance data. Although NAPLAN was cancelled, the school utilised otherembedded measures of student performance, such as the Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT)and school-based Benchmarks and Standards, to keep the board abreast of student progresstowards targets outlined in the Business Plan.
There were some changes to our membership with threeparent positions up for nomination. This process saw usfarewell long standing board member, Mrs Deb Mayburywho chose not to renominate for a further term on theschool board. We were pleased to see the return of MrsVeronika Sajova and Mr Steele Taylor for another term andto welcome our new parent member Mrs Rochelle Watson.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of myfellow board members for their time and dedication to theschool board. Your expertise and input is highly valued, aswe continue our focus on improving outcomes for thestudents, staff and the community of South Halls HeadPrimary School.

OUR VISION
Our aim is to work closely with our community to provide an outstanding educational experience for students.
Students strive to succeed. Students are encouraged to take risks, to accept challenge andto learn from mistakes. School staff support students by providing an orderly, safe andencouraging environment. They put social and emotional support structures in place toensure all students are confident and happy.
OUR BELIEFS
The school culture is based around theconcept of a ‘Village’. It is defined by thefollowing characteristics - all students, parentsand staff know each other well and eachperson shows genuine concern for the careand welfare of others and the environment.

CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION
South Halls Head Primary School is located inthe housing subdivision of Seascapes(Mandurah). The subdivision is nearingcompletion and demographical dataindicates that the population growth isstabilising, resulting in student enrolmentsteadying at around 600 students. The school’scatchment area encompasses the southernend of Halls Head, a small section of Erskineand the northern part of Falcon. The area ismade up of relatively new housing in the HallsHead section of the catchment and older,
lower cost housing in Falcon.
The school has a very good reputation and thenumber of applications for enrolment fromoutside the catchment area are high.
Socio economic indicators place thecommunity in the average range.
The majority of the students have an Australianupbringing, however the school enjoys culturaldiversity with over 15 countries represented.

Our 2019 – 2021 Business Plan establishedour three priority areas focused onimproving student outcomes.
These priorities were decided after
careful consideration by the schoolcommunity and were based upon: dataanalysis from NAPLAN, PAT andbenchmark testing of studentachievement; student, parent and staffsurveys and consultation with Boardmembers and staff.

The Technologies curriculum will be trialled, developed and fully
implemented by 2021.

With the change in the Technology Curriculum, it was important for allstaff to understand the differences between Digital Technologies andICT General Capabilities. This has been the main focus of the
Success for All Students
Technologies Curriculum Team and with much collaboration and consultation with staff, achecklist of Skills/Capabilities has been developed for each year level, ready for implementationin 2021. The Design Technologies Curriculum was heavily reliant on the STEM-based projects fromSciTech when the Technologies Curriculum was first released. This is still in the process of beingreviewed to ensure all aspects of Design are being met, with a draft Scope and Sequence ready
for years PP to 2, with Years 3 – 6 to be completed by the end of this year, ready forimplementation in 2021.

HIGHLIGHTS 2020
BOOK WEEK
Book Week 2020 was a week of mystery and fun activities for
everyone. An unusual mound was found on the grassed area
at the beginning of the week and much speculation was had
as to what it was and how it got there. With eggs appearing,
students realised the mound was in fact a nest- but what
creature could it belong to? All was revealed at the end of
the week where students learned through an animated
movie that it had been a dragon who had built the nest and
laid the eggs.
The mysterious mound led to creative activities including song
writing in Music with Ms Brown. Each year level created a
song about the nest using a different musical style. All of
these songs were showcased at our concert at the end of
the year.
Book Week concluded with our dress up day book parade.
The students and staff looked amazing in their costumes!

CRAZY HAIR DAY
SINGING ‘WHEEL’
There was creativity galore with our
Crazy Hair Day! Students came with
some very crazy styles with all monies
raised supporting Story Dogs.
Covid-19 restrictions did not stop us from holding our annual Singing Spiral. Instead of
forming our traditional spiral in the undercover area, Ms Brown created a singing ‘wheel’
held outside on our central grassed area. The new shape provided the opportunity for
connection, within the guidelines of the Covid-19 restrictions. It was a lovely sunny
afternoon, enjoyed by our whole school community.

YEAR 6 CAMP
SCIENCE FAIR
Year 6 Camp was an activity
that remained uncertain of
occurring throughout most of
Semester One. Our Year 6
students were thrilled when
restrictions were eased and
camp could proceed.
The camp was held on the
scenic grounds of Fairbridge,
Point Peron. Students enjoyed
activities such as rafting,
archery, mountain bike riding
and abseiling.
A fun time was had by all, with
great examples of team work
and resilience demonstrated
throughout the camp.
We were pleased to be able
to run our annual Science Fair
during Term 4. Our Year 5 and
6 students prepared a wide
range of engaging science
experiments to showcase.

parents, had the opportunity
to attend the fair to
experience and learn about
all things Science!
