I would like to start by thanking the staff, students, parents and carers for welcoming me into their school
community. It has been a pleasure to meet so many new people and to begin to get to know you all. Having said
this, it seems only fair that I share with you a little about myself.
I grew up on a farm in the small country town of Parkes,
NSW. This was at a time when the Elvis Festival was just a group of mums and dads having a night out at a local restaurant. Oh, how the times have changed!
As a teenager, much of my time was spent racing go –
karts with my father. This passion took our family across the length and breadth of Australia and overseas. It also
taught me some very valuable life lessons. Things such as:
Make the most of what you have.
Never give up. The person who wins, is the person who thinks they
can. Win or lose – be gracious, because you won’t always
win and you won’t always lose.
My teaching career has taken me to two states and many
different schools. I began teaching in the Central West of NSW and then moved to QLD for 12 years. Most recently I
was Deputy Principal at Alstonville High School which is a school of 760 students on the Far North Coast of NSW.
Many of you will have noticed me at the front of the school
in Tyson Street, greeting the students as they arrive at school in the mornings. It has been lovely to see them keen to start a new day and proudly wearing their
uniforms. The students’ enthusiasm hasn’t stopped at the front gate.
It was clearly evident on Friday 4 May 2018 as they cheered, supported and encouraged all runners in the school cross-country, including myself. It is refreshing to
see that their school spirit is alive and well.
Next week years 7 and 9 will be participating in NAPLAN testing. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them
well and to encourage them to do their best.

School Uniform
This week SGHS has been focusing on students wearing the correct polo shirt ie.
white polo shirt, with or without the school crest. These are available for
purchase from the library, Lowes (with school crest) and Big W (without school crest).
In coming weeks, the focus will move to the rest of the uniform. Any student who
does not have the correct uniform can approach the library staff and ask for an item from our range of second hand
quality uniforms. The Library staff can also show them how to access the Student
Assistance Scheme to purchase new uniform items.
Years 10 and 11 Vaccinations Vaccinations for Years 10 and 11 will take
place on Monday, 14 May 2018. Any students who have not yet returned their
forms, to the front office, are asked to do so ASAP. If there are students who did not receive the forms, or who have misplaced
them, there are extras available from the front office. Year 10 Students attending
TAFE programs that day can have their vaccination done at 9:30 and then go to TAFE or they can wait for the catch up on
25 September 2018.
Painted Person Excursion The very enjoyable Painted Person excursion takes place this Friday with
elective Art classes attending. They will travel to Minnie Waters and hopefully will
be able to wash it all off before they get back in the bus! Thanks to the CAPA department for organising this event.

Quiz night success!
Several teams of teachers and students from South Grafton High School attended
a quiz night at Grafton District Services Club on Saturday 5 May 2018 to raise
money for Andrew Tarrant, our Home School Liaison Officer, who is presently unwell. The winning team consisted of
several current and past members of staff from SGHS. The prizes consisted of
commemorative t-shirts and Grafton High School memorabilia.
Canteen Feel like a curry? How about a bacon and
egg roll? Or a fresh muffin and a filling sandwich? Well come along to your school canteen, place your order before school or
choose something prepared and waiting for you. The canteen now has EFTPOS. So
support the canteen that supports your school!
School communication to parents,
carers and students The best place to look is on our website http://web1.sthgrafton-
h.schools.nsw.edu.au This site provides quick links to great information like the
SGHS Sentral student portal, Moodle, curriculum, Facebook site, canteen menu
and newsletter. The SKOOLBAG app is another easy way to get up to date information on what is happening in our
school.
