We currently have students taking on- and off-campus dual enrollment courses. Students can always come see an administrator or counselor to learn how they can get involved in these exciting opportunities to earn college credits while still in high school. This year, students will be involved in several different standardized tests, to include PERT, SAT, ACT, FSA, EOC’s, and Industry Certification exams. Some will also take Advanced Placement testing. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL STUDENTSIMPLEMENTATION OF ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

FOR MINORS TO MAINTAIN THEIR DRIVING PRIVILEGE Florida State law requires that students 14 to 18 years of age, who have not earned a high school diploma, must attend school regularly in order to maintain their driving privileges. School districts are required to report to the State of Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) the names of students who have accumulated 15 unexcused absences in a period of 90 calendar days. A student who is reported will be informed by the DHSMV that his/her name has been received and may lose the privilege to drive. Should a student be contacted by DHSMV with a notice to suspend license, he or she may initiate a request for a hardship waiver, or a request for a reinstatement of driving privileges, by contacting the hearing committee established in the school. Please encourage regular school attendance so that your child may improve his/her learning potential and enjoy the opportunity to drive. EXCUSED ABSENCE FOR MAKE-UP WORK Students that are absent from class will need to submit an excused note from the parent/guardian with the name of student, date of absence, reason for absence, and parent contact information to the attendance secretary within two (2) days of the absence. Students will not be able to receive any make up work unless the note has been accepted and received as excused within the two (2) day time frame. All unexcused absences will result in zero for any assignments missed that day. Attendance reasons that are considered excused are outlined as:

· Personal illness · Death of a relative · Religious holiday(s) · Subpoena by law enforcement · Any other reason must be approved prior to the absence by an administrator

*Any student participating in an after school activity or athletic event must be in school on the day of the activity for a minimum of two (2) blocks. Students who are suspended from school are prohibited from participating/attending any after-school activities at any Lee County school during their suspension. TARDY GUIDELINES · Students can be tardy up to 12 times (excused or unexcused) in a semester. This includes parents walking the student

into the building. Students must have a note with an excusable reason, otherwise it will be considered unexcused. · We will accept up to 12 hand written notes. After 12 students will need some form of a legal note for lateness.

ú Student must have a doctor’s, court or any other legal documentation to be excused. · We will give student 1 car trouble excused after that they will be considered unexcused.

It is very important that students make it to school on time. If transportation is needed, the district provides bus transportation. Please contact the school to request bus route information.

Driver Education THE DATES FOR THE SPRING DE SATURDAY CLASS ARE SATURDAY, JANUARY 30 – SATURDAY, APRIL 23. Space is limited. STUDENTS SHOULD CONTACT MR. MOREHEAD IN ROOM 206A IF THEY HAVE QUESTIONS OR ARE INTERESTED IN TAKING THE COURSE.

Delivery Policy We cannot accept deliveries of food for students during the school day. We also do not accept deliveries of flowers, balloons, stuffed animals, etc. for students. Flowers and balloons can cause allergic reactions, and all are a distraction to the learning environment. Thank you for adhering to this policy.

Sign-out Policy Students are not permitted to sign out after 1:20pm. If someone other than a parent or person on the student’s emergency form is signing a student out, the parent/guardian must send written documentation to authorize the pick-up. All notes will be verified prior to releasing students. For the safety of the student, there will be no exceptions to this rule.

Code of Conduct Forms It is important that we are able to get in contact with a parent/guardian. Parents please make sure we have your child’s emergency card and directory information on file at school. To obtain copies of the forms you may visit http://www.leeschools.net/code-of-conduct or come into the school to complete the forms.

In December, South celebrated the efforts and successes of 390 Advanced Placement students. The AP program requires a level of student dedication that goes above and beyond that of a traditional high school class. For their efforts, students are exposed to higher level thinking and analysis skills, learn how to better manage their time and potentially graduate with several college course credits already earned. Over 150 certificates of success were awarded to those that earned a 3, 4 or 5 passing score on AP exams last year. In addition South recognized 7 students who had earned a level of distinction for passing 3

or more AP courses and their exams while enrolled at South. South is in its first year of the AP capstone program which provides students with the opportunity to graduate with a special diploma after meeting the programs requirements. If you are interested in the program we will be offering information sessions during our school choice open house this month, or you can visit https://lp.collegeboard.org/ap-capstone for additional information. South is looking to build an “AP parent advisory board” to help us build and support this prestigious academic program. Parents wishing to get involved could assist with fundraising for the program and organizing our celebration events. If you are interested please contact Steven Wilkie at [email protected] or Kati Morris at [email protected].

Student Assignment 2016-17JANUARY 11TH – APRIL 1, 2016 Parents of currently enrolled students in Lee County Public School grades five, eight, and students in Pre-K attending Lee County Public Schools who are eligible for kindergarten for 2016/17, will be mailed their child’s personalized application on January 8, 2016. This is a very exciting time of year for students and parents as they plan for 2016-2017! Those receiving the applications can save time by applying online! Please read the documents sent to you very carefully, and determine if you want to apply online, mail it back to us, or bring it to one of our offices in person. This is a ten-week application period. There is no need to stand in long lines the first few days since you have ten weeks to submit the application. All applications are processed as a group. Parents of children who will be five on or before September 1st , 2015 and who are not enrolled in one of the district’s Pre-K programs must visit one of our offices to register for kindergarten for the 2016/2017 school year (bring registration requirements). This should be done during the first application period (January 11 – April 1) to increase the chances of being assigned to your preferred school. Brand new students cannot apply on-line – they must be registered in person. There are no automatic assignments – parents need to register incoming kindergartners even if they have an older sibling already attending the preferred school. Please visit www.leeschools.net for registration requirements and Student Assignment Office locations. There is also virtual instruction available within the Lee County School District. Lee Virtual Instruction Program (LVIP) is the only K-12 school in the District. It follows the school district calendar and offers the same diploma opportunity as any other school in the District. There are two application periods for LVIP. The first application period coincides with the Student Assignment’s first application period. The second one starts the Monday after Thanksgiving for second semester enrollments. Applying to LVIP does not affect your current School Choice assignment until the student is accepted into the LVIP program. Visit Lee Virtual Instruction Program at http://lvip.leeschools.net/.

Spectacular Year So FarBy C/MAJ Cindy Caballero

This year has been an incredible year so far. JROTC cadets have participated in an extraordinary number of events from competitions to camping trips. However, the school year hasn’t come to an end. There’s still tons left for the program to do! Halfway into the year, JROTC has so much more accomplish. These next few months are jam packed, starting the New Year off with a rappelling trip, a blood drive, and a trip to some of the universities here in Florida. During the rappel trip cadets get the opportunity to conquer their fears through climbing walls and zip lining. The blood drive is hosted twice a year by JROTC. Cadets have the opportunity to donate blood within the school for a good cause. Finally, the university trips target primarily cadets who are in their junior or sophomore year of high school. Cadets have an opportunity to visit a state college and a private college and receive a briefing about the schools, admission requirements and scholarship opportunities. In the months of February, March, and April we continue to stay busy. Those events are the Cadet Ball, the Lisa Pauchey Drill meet, and a spring campout. The Cadet Ball, held at the Harborside convention center, gives cadets an opportunity to expand their horizons while interacting with peers from all 14 high schools in a formal setting. The Lisa Pauchey Drill Meet is held in the University of Tampa where cadets compete against other JROTC teams from across Florida in drill, exhibition, and color guard events. Finally, Spring Camp held on the Peace River gives cadets an opportunity to spend time canoeing, swimming, and camping. So far this school year has been one full of events for the program, yet the year isn’t done and we still have plenty more events for cadets to participate in. JROTC hosts many events throughout the school year and every year they differ. As these events approach, we look forward to them with much excitement.
