ALL-AMERICAN VIENS Evelyne Viens (L’ancienne-Lorette, Quebec, Canada) returns to the Bulls for her junior season after becoming USF women’s soccer’s first-ever All-American when she was named to the third team by the United Soccer Coaches. Viens was named to the MAC Hermann Watch List in August, and was selected as The American Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Canadian forward was also a unanimous selection for the preseason all-conference team. Viens was also recognized during the preseason by Top Drawer Soccer. She was named No. 19 in the national Top 100, No. 8 in the nation at forward and American Athletic Conference Top 20, all by Top Drawer, which also named her to the preseason best XI second team. Viens has led the Bulls’ offense for two straight seasons, and has amassed 28 goals and 69 points in that time. In her sophomore campaign, Viens scored six game- winners, the most in a season in program history. RETURNERS / NEWCOMERS USF returns nine starters and welcomes 10 new Bulls to the squad. Kelli Burney (Bealeton, Va.) returns as centerback for the Bulls, and brings a combination of strength, athleticism and leadership to the back line. She works well to anchor the back line, and unite any group of defenders that comes into the mix. Aubrey Megrath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) returns as an important offensive piece. She worked in tandem with Viens last season, and ranked second on the team in goals (6) and shots on goal (23). Megrath already has one goal this year. Newcomer Sydny Nasello (Land O’ Lakes, Fla.) showed off her Green and Gold pride during the preseason, playing alongside Viens. During USF’s first exhibition match she scored two goals in USF’s 6-1 win over Stetson. REIGNING CHAMPIONS USF returns to the pitch as the reigning American Athletic Confereince Tournament champions. The Bulls’ 2017 campaign was one of the best in program history, and included an appearance in the second round of the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history. The previou appearance was in 2010. Last season marked USF’s fourth trip to the NCAA tournament, and third in the last four season. All four tournament appearances have been under the leadership of head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. RECEIVING VOTES USF is receiving votes in both the United Soccer Coaches and Top Drawer Soccer polls. USF is No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches’ Regional Poll. FIRST WEEK OF REGULAR SEASON For the second straight year, the Bulls started the season in dramatic fashion with a golden goal victory. USF opened with Towson at Corbett Stadium. A goal by Towson in the seventh minute put the Bulls behind, but USF would rally in the second half when junior Aubrey Megrath scored the equalizer in then 47 th minute. Sophomore Fanny Pelletier-Laroche netted her first career NCAA goal when she hit the game-winner with a header off a corner. USF’s first road test of the 2018 campaign was at Auburn. Despite a strong offensive effort, outshooting the Tigers, 20-13, the Bulls couldn’t come back from a pair of goals in the 21 st and 59 th minutes. Redshirt junior Kelli Burney scored for USF in the 89 th minute in USF’s second header off a corner this season. PRESEASON TESTS USF had three exhibition matches during the preseason that provided valuable opportunities for head coach Denise Schilte-Brown to test her full roster. USF started with a dominant 6-1 win over Stetson, and followed that performance with a 0-0 draw at No. 5 South Carolina, the 2017 NCAA runner-up. THE OPPONENT: #17/20 BAYLOR Last season, Baylor advanced to the Elite 8 round of NCAA play for the first time in program history. This year, the Bears opened their season with a pair of wins at home.
