South Dakota Co-Occurring Disorders Project
Facing Challenges
It is estimated that over 80% people seeking treatment have both substance use and
mental health disorders.
These dual disorders are often referred to as co-occurring disorders.

This project is helping people with the greatest challenges.
the people who often stumble and fall….the people who are said to have “failed”…..the people who still wish for a better life.
The Shelter of Addiction and Mental Illness

full of sadness,confusion, hurt, anger……and pain.
On the inside…The road is a complex weave of services.

The CornerEach day there are thousands stuck on the corner between….
Recovery and Hopelessness
They fear letting loved ones down and letting themselves
down.
A Star is there….Service providers are there to listen--to build
on a person’s strengths, even when it seems there’s nothing there to build on.
Finding periods of successFinding a “happy life goal”
Finding support
So they can find themselves again.
“You can’t change my mind.”Providers listen for the Stage of Change for each problem. And seek to understand the
road already taken.
