South Charlotte Sports Report “HOMETOWN TEAMS ... HOMETOWN KIDS” Volume 6, Issue 24 March 29, 2012 - FREE www.southcharlottesports.com Athletics, Academics and Faith all wrapped into one, meet South Mecklen- burg High School senior Anya Armanini. The 17 year old daughter of Carl and Lisa Armanini is plac- ing the finishing touches on her outstanding four year career as a top student- athlete at South Meck. Anya has excelled in both swimming and soccer and will leave the history filled high school as one of the top student-athletes of the Class of 2012. Anya has been a four year member of the South Mecklenburg State Cham- pionship Swimming Team. She served as captain and was named Most Valuable Swimmer for the 2012 un- der Coach Leslie Berens. In soccer, Anya has played all four seasons on the varsity team and is serving as the captain of the team for Coach Eric White this spring. She has also been named as one of the top- ten Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athletes at South Meck. She was also recently awarded as a 2011-2012 Discus Award Winner for her achievements in the ar- eas of Athletics, Academics, and Faith. The Discus Awards is a national pro- gram that provides recognition and scholarship opportunities to all-around high school students who excel in three of ten key attributes. Anya is now eligible for 2011-2012 Discus Awards scholarships. Quite a resume for this well-balanced young leader. Winning the Discus Award was quite rewarding for Anya as it capped off many of the goals she has worked so hard for over the last four years. “It makes me feel very accomplished in several important areas not just one aspect of what I’ve done so far. I was recognized as a very hard worker in the classroom and on the field as well as in the pool and was able to excel at each one.” On the soccer field, Anya plays forward for the Sabres and for her 93 CUFC Gold Club Soccer Team. Anya shares a little of her soccer history. “I started at Olde Providence in the Rec League when I was 4 moved to Park Sharon then played for Charlotte United to complete my Club Career. Winning the 2010 State Cup with my club team was great. We qualified to represent North Carolina in Region III play that year in Alabama. I also enjoy playing against Charlotte Catholic, coached by Gary Hoillet my Club team coach as well as Providence coached by Timothy Long who coached South Meck my freshman year. Those are great games when we (South Meck) play them.” Anya added a 2010 State Championship to her resume with the CUFC Gold Club Soccer Team. As a freshman at South Meck, she also scored the winning and only goal of the game to lead the Sabres to the second round of the state playoffs. Amazingly Anya has also found equal success in the swimming pool. The Sabres Swimming Captain recorded top times in the 50 free of 25.52 and in the 100 back of 1:02:67. Her medley relay team came very close to breaking the South Meck record at the State Championship meet. Anya also likes to share her swimming knowledge with younger swimmers. For the last three summers she has served as a coach with the Cameron Woods Sharks. All of these accomplish- ments in the pool came without the extra practice of a club swim team as Anya remained busy in the summers with her soccer play. We asked Anya to sum up her South Meck Soccer and Swimming careers in one sentence. Anya responded with, “Playing Varsity Soccer and Swimming on the Conference Region and State teams for all four years has been wonderful and has allowed me to meet great friends and mentors.” Inside the South Meck classroom, Anya has amassed a grade point average over 4.0 and she is a member of the National Honor Society, National Techni- cal Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. Anya also serves as the Vice President of Beta Club. She is a Sabre Ambassador and a member of Sigma Lamda Chi. Next year Anya plans to attend either the University of South Carolina, East Carolina or College of Charleston. She hopes to study Physical Therapy. The South Charlotte Sports Report would like to add Anya Armanini to our long list of outstanding student-athletes in the South Charlotte community. Anya has given her all to reach all of her high school goals and we have no doubt that she has a very bright future ahead of her. @TrippRoakes We appreciate the support of our community! With the first signs of spring and summer upon us, I wanted to take this space to offer a column from the past. The message of this column will never age. Please take the time to

read it and talk to your teenagers about the true meaning of making good decisions.

“IT CAN’T HAPPEN TO ME.” YES IT CAN

Over the last six years I have penned a few columns about how small decisions can affect the entire life of a teenager. This message always seems to ring a little more clear around Spring Break and Prom Season. I am not sure if the numbers would support my thought, but it seems like we see a lot more teenage tragedies this time of the year. Maybe it’s the warm weather, maybe it’s the excitement of knowing summer is near and in the case of high school seniors, knowing that the freedom of college is just around the corner.

Regardless of the reason, the newspapers and internet are filled with stories of teenage tragedies right now. Last year at this same time, three students from my high school alma mater, Wilkes Central High School, were killed in different car accidents. Locally we have seen a couple of car accidents take the lives of high school students over the last month as well. These children’s parents have gone from planning graduations and summer vaca-tions to planning funerals. They will never get to experience the thrill of graduation night or the excitement of moving a child into their freshman dorm. We also tend to hear about more and more teenage deaths caused by alcohol use this time of the year. Every spring break is filled with stories of students falling to their deaths from upper level hotel balco-nies or stepping in front of traveling vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.

The common theme we often find in these tragedies usually lead back to one poor deci-sion. Unfortunately teenagers have not developed the skills needed to make all the right decisions. They don’t have the life skills their parents have learned over the years. Simply put, teenagers are not as smart as they think they are. All teenagers need the guidance of loving parents, but even then, many are going to go around that advice and some are going to learn very hard lessons or even lose their life trying to make decisions for themselves without listening to the important advice given by most parents.

The point of this column is simply to ask all teenagers to take an extra breath this spring before making a bad decision. Think back on what you should do in each situation and then take another moment to think about what could happen if things don’t go as planned. Think about the repercussions of trying to drive 65 on a 45 mph road. Think about what could happen if you look down to send a text message and another car suddenly stops in front of you. Think about what could happen if you drink underage and then decide to drive a car or what could happen if you get in a car with someone that has been drinking. Trust me when I tell you, nothing good can come from any of these poor decisions.

Such a huge majority of the students in South Charlotte are headed to college, many on athletic and academic scholarships. I ask all my teenage readers, Do you really want to risk losing what you have worked so hard for? Do you really want to take a chance at getting hurt, killed or hurting or killing someone else? Can you live with yourself if you survive and your best friend doesn’t? These are all real life scenarios that play themselves out in different cities across our country on a daily basis.

This is my personal plea to all my student readers. Take an extra minute to listen to your parents advice. Believe it or not, they actually know what they are talking about and want to have you around for a long time. They want to see you graduate from college, start a family and bring the Grandchildren over for the holidays.

It can happen to you. Be safe, think twice and Good luck the rest of the school year and summer.

PERFORMANCE UNLIMITED REDEFINES SOCCER SPECIFIC TRAINING

Is your child in need of a soccer program that gives them a clear plan of how to improve, gain confidence, and keep them on top of their game?

John Lytton, owner and program director of Performance Unlimited, has taken his experience as a professional soccer player and background in sports science to solve the hurdles that he feels is keeping young athletes from developing into the players they have the potential to be.

“After I finished my professional soccer career in Brazil, I knew that I wanted to continue to be involved in the game at the youth development level,” says Lytton. “I moved to Charlotte to work specifically with a large and talented youth soccer population and apprenticed under a coach that gave me the experience training with world class athletes as well as youth players, in several different countries. While in Charlotte, I began training speed and agility with certain players, did technical sessions with a few, and strength work with others. I was going from field to gym to field and back again throughout my day, and noticed that there were quite a few soccer players and coaches that were traveling to three different locations just like I was.”

Performance Un-limited has brought in several professional players and success-ful soccer trainers to create a team that can progress any part of the game that needs developing. So what does a soccer specific training program look like?

“Glad you asked”, says Lytton. “Soccer is unique compared to other team sports be-cause the entire game is played with the ball at your feet, with very few stoppages, and the players are working in a large field changing direction every three to five steps. Players cannot expect to get the most out of their training time unless they are working on the needs specific to the soccer player. Our programs make sure that we can train and progress every aspect

of performance, within the game. For instance, our speed and agility training works both on and off the soccer ball, teaching the players to be a better soccer athlete, giving them the ability to leverage their technical skills. We make sure that the programs works to strengthen the parts of the body that will keep them performing at a higher levels while staying away from injury.”

Lytton writes all the programs with former Charlotte Eagle, Patrick Daka, along with specific input from his coaching staff and player assessments.

Performance Unlimited defines three ways that their programs separate them-selves from other training companies, as it relates to soccer specific training. 1) Every session is held in a soccer specific environment. Performance Unlimited has a facility dedicated to the soccer athlete complete with an indoor soccer field. 2) Performance Unlimited programs are developed by and coached by current or former professional soccer players. 3) Soccer players train amongst soccer players. Having like-minded athletes with similar goals are much more likely to work to develop each other, as well as themselves.

“This has never been done before. Soccer has never had a facility dedicated to the pure development of every age and level of player. We are working to create a culture of success within these walls that teaches a young person how to become the best version of them and how those gains in confidence relates to increased performance on the soccer field.”

AnnaRose plays 3rd base and pitcher for the War-riors softball team. Last season she was named to the All-Conference, All-District and All-State teams as a freshman. AnnaRose also plays for the Weddington High School Volleyball Team.

For the spring season, AnnaRose is playing a strong 3rd base and has yet to give up an earned run at pitcher. She is holding down the fourth spot in the batting order with three home runs to date. Once the school season concludes, AnnaRose will play travel softball for the 18U SunDevils Elite

Team which will travel to Georgia, Florida and other locations to play in showcase tourna-ments. She also plans to attend a couple of division one college softball camps.

Inside the classroom, AnnaRose is also an all-star performer with a 4.17 grade point average. She is a member of the Student Athletic Honor Society and an active participant with Young-Life. AnnaRose plans to attend the YoungLife Crooked Creek Camp in Colorado this summer. Congratulations to AnnaRose Borrelli for being named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.

ANDREW MAULDIN

South Mecklenburg High School baseball senior Andrew Mauldin has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week. Andrew, the son of Bob and Anne Mauldin has proven to be one of the top pitchers in the city this season racking up an impressive amount of strikeouts and a one hitter with 16 strikeouts against Ardrey Kell. When he isn’t on the pitching mound, Andrew plays middle infield for the Sabres. His hard work and determination on the field led to him being chosen as a finalist for the 2012 Gamer of the Year Award at the Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Awards Dinner in January.

In showcase baseball, Andrew has played for the Champions Baseball Academy organization. After breaking his wrist at the beginning of

the summer and missing the prime recruiting season, Andrew became very determined to improve. His hard work and outstanding efforts on the field led Andrew to accept an offer to play college baseball for Liberty University just last week. With this decision in the rear view mirror, Andrew is hoping to lead the Sabres to a strong run in the state playoffs this season. His team is very talented and just needs to gain a little more confidence before the conference tournament arrives.

Inside the classroom, Andrew is also a strong student with a 4.44 grade point average and he is in the top 9 percent of his class. Andrew is also member of National Honor Society, Beta Club and National Honor Spanish Society. Congratulations to Andrew Mauldin for being named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.

VOLLEYBALL CAMP ENROLLMENT NOW OPEN“12 hours of professional instruction from

the top coaches in the Carolinas.”

The South Charlotte Sports Report is very proud to announce our 4th Annual Summer Volleyball Camp featuring two of the very best volleyball coaches in the State of North Carolina. With 12 full hours of instruction in a three day period, Thursday, June 14 – Saturday June 16, campers will be able to maximize instruc-tion time with our championship level coaching staff. The South Charlotte Sports Report takes great pride in offering two state championship coaches to lead the instruction. Our camp is open to rising 4th-9th graders with every level of experi-ence from beginner to advanced.

Coach Zoe Bell is the head volleyball coach at Ardrey Kell High School. Before arriving at Ardrey Kell, she built the Providence High School volleyball team into a state power. In year two at Ardrey Kell, Coach Bell led The Knights to the State Championship Game! As head coach of Providence, Ardrey Kell and National Trav-

el Teams, Coach Bell has trained nearly every top volleyball player in the area over the last decade.

Coach Karen Brad-bury is the current head coach of Provi-dence High School. She has continued the tradition of excel-lence in volleyball for the Panthers, leading the Panthers to the State Championship this fall! Karen also instructs many of the top volleyball players in the community. Over the years, Karen has helped many of her players earn col-lege volleyball schol-arships. Her own daughters also came through the Provi-dence Volleyball Pro-gram, allowing Karen to relate to the par-ents of the players she coaches.

With these two outstanding coaches, area volleyball play-ers will have the op-

portunity to once again receive the best instruction in the area.Non-stop coaching from the best coaches in the area will serve as the perfect

challenge as campers begin to focus on the challenges of introductory, middle and high school volleyball. Campers will be broken down by experience level and the coaching will be tailored to fit their needs. Older players will focus on the skills needed in middle school and high school while the younger players will learn how to build a foundation for volleyball success.

Volleyball skill development is emphasized during the on-court instruction in the following areas: serving, serve receiving, forearm passing, setting, attack-ing, team defense, blocking, team reception, attack coverage and team transition. Each camper will receive first class instruction for every position on the volleyball court.

Doing flips through the air might be a distant dream of some people, but for Megan McClelland, that is a reality. Megan, the 14-year-old daughter of Craig and Penny McClelland, has flipped her way to success in gymnastics and landed on the podium in multiple events. Competing in Bars, Vault, Beam, and Floor competitions, Megan worked her way to First Place in Regional’s and Eastern Nationals at Level 9 gymnastics. This Charlotte Latin student was recently promoted to Level 10, which is the highest possible leveling for USAG gymnastics.

Megan started her gymnastics journey when she was four. Her brother had done it when he was younger and she followed him on that path. From there, Megan has progressed to be very successful and has a love for the sport.

“I love that you are always challenged and there is always something new to learn. I also enjoy being around my friends who are also gymnasts. We push each other to succeed, as well as inspire each other to do our best.”

At Megan’s level, the training is rigorous. She practices four hours a day, six days a week. If you do the math on that, it is the equivalent of a part- time job. Her practices consist of conditioning and practicing vault, bar, beam, and floor routines. Con-ditioning is mixed with running, rope climbs, push-ups, and other aerobic exercises.

In competitions, Megan has excelled in all areas. Her favorite routine, Bars, is also her best routine. She can perform a Giant Full Gienger, which is im-pressive for a gymnast of her age. Her first places in Level 9 Regional’s and Eastern Nationals both

consisted of individual golds in bar, beam, and floor routines. However, gymnastics is not just an indi-vidual sport.

“During routines, I focus on what corrections my coaches gave me to work on. They tell me what I need to do better and I go out there and try to fix it. I would really like to thank my coaches who help me and inspire me to work hard.”

Looking ahead to where gymnastics fits into the future, Megan wants to be a gymnast in college. She also made it very clear that she wants the college to

be good in athletics and academics.Academics are another one of her strong suits.

Megan attends Charlotte Latin and is a straight A student. This includes taking courses such as Honors Geometry. In the little free time away from school and the gym, Megan enjoys art and being with her friends. All of these things wrap together to make Megan successful wherever she goes. Congratula-tions to Megan on how far she has come, and good luck to her as she continues to jump, flip, and land her way through life.

SOUTH MECK BASEBALL RAISES OVER $3,000 FOR MIRACLE LEAGUE

Baseball is a fun game and with the help of the South Mecklenburg High School Baseball Team, others will be able to enjoy the excitement of the game. The Sa-bre Baseball team sponsored a successful charity event and baseball game to raise money for The Miracle League. Money raised at the March 7th event will help build a custom-designed, rubberized turf field at the University City YMCA. The field will be handicap accessible so that children with disabilities in the Greater Charlotte area will have both the opportunity and site to play ball.

Personalizing the importance of the efforts, 11-year-old Miracle League player Morgan Spease threw out the first pitch of the baseball game. The game was a con-test between teams from South Meck and Cox Mill High Schools, with South Meck coming out on top 11-1.

South Meck students, families, and alumni, along with friends from the com-munity, participated in activities that included face painting by South Meck Na-tional Art Honor Society, a silent auction, raffle, and pitching contest. There were also three home run derby events: for students, Sabre Baseball alumni, and the community, featuring a special guest appearance by Tony Womack. National Hon-or Society and Diamond Doll students volunteered to help keep the event running smoothly.

Sabre Baseball players wore hot pink t-shirts to school on Wednesday to draw attention and build excitement about the event. The baseball team is proud to sup-port South Meck and their community. The South Meck Baseball Miracle League Committee wishes to thank all of those involved in the planning and execution of this successful event, and looks forward to opening day at the Miracle League field at University City YMCA in the fall.

To join in the effort to support the Miracle League, the baseball team is con-tinuing to accept donations. Please make checks payable to: South Mecklenburg Athletic Booster Club (include “Baseball Team/Miracle League) in the memo sec-tion on your check. Mail your check to: South Mecklenburg High School, Attention: Coach Jon Tuscan, 900 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 2210. (For more information go to www.miracleleague.com.)

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes the entire South Meck Baseball Pro-gram for helping others to enjoy the wonderful game of baseball. Thank you for providing such a positive event for the community!

MEREDITH HARRIS AIMS FOR TOP STUDENT-ATHLETE STATUS

For many in our community, finding success on the field of play is great but they want more. They want to be a true student-athlete with strong grades and character. Charlotte Christian freshman soft-ball and basketball player Meredith Harris falls into that category. The 15 year old daughter of Jamie and Monica Harris has set high goals in the classroom and for her two favorite sports.

Meredith started for the Knights on the Varsity Basketball Team and now this spring she is help-ing the softball team to an early season 4-2 record. In basketball the Knights finished 24-7 and tied for third in the state tournament. Now with softball in full swing, Meredith has taken her position at short-stop and is working hard for Coach Cee Brooks.

While Meredith has found great success on the basketball court, it’s the softball field where she is re-

ally beginning to take flight. With a ton of hard work, Meredith has earned a position on the nationally ranked Carolina Cardinals 18U travel team. Meredith also partici-pated in the 3rd Annual Battle of the Border All Star Softball Showcase last summer. Meredith found great success with the Cardinals 16U team last year.

“We finished 3rd in the 16U ASA Eastern World Series with my Carolina Cardi-nals team. I was able to hit a game winning double in the 7th inning to help my team win the semi-final game.”

Meredith is a versatile player, she has the ability to play all infield positions except pitcher and catcher. She claims shortstop as her favorite. Meredith will continue to work on her softball skills this summer.

“I will be playing for the Carolina Cardinals 18U team. This is my first year to play for the 18U Cardinals and we will get to travel to many parts of the country that I have never been to before.”

Inside the classroom, Meredith is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and she carries a 4.5 grade point average. She hopes to one day become a Forensic Scientist. The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Meredith for her commitment to the classroom and sports. She is certainly “one to watch” over the next few years!

& Fun Run

April 28, 2012 Charlotte, NC

Ardrey Kell High School junior Sarah Phillips is one of the top soccer players in the state. Sar-ah, 17, is the daughter of Wendell and Susan Phil-lips. The versatile soccer star can play anywhere on the left side and mid-dle of the field. This past November Sarah gave her verbal commitment to the Virginia Tech Hokies Soccer Program. She has also been the recipient of two invitations to the US Soccer Federation Train-

ing Camp. Sarah has played for the Knights Varsity Team since her freshman year when she earned all-conference and all region honors. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Sarah!

How excited are you to attend and play soccer at Virginia Tech upon your 2013 graduation?“I’m extremely excited to attend and play soccer at Vir-ginia Tech. As a little kid I have always wanted to play in college at a hard, challenging level like the ACC, and now I am. It’s a dream come true.”

What led you to choose Virginia Tech and what other schools did you consider?“I chose Virginia Tech because I connected well with the coaches and felt comfortable with them. They were friendly and open with me which made it easy to talk to them. Also Virginia Tech is in the ACC and I’ve always wanted the competitive atmosphere of that for soccer. Virginia Tech’s campus stood out to me by how beauti-ful and different it was. The atmosphere of the school is wonderful, and the student body has such great school spirit and is so connected. When I was there for my unof-ficial visit, I met some of the players and they were very welcoming and I felt comfortable with them, I knew it was the right place for me. Other schools I considered were Clemson, Davidson, UNCC, Wake Forest and College of Charleston

How has your career at Ardrey Kell gone?“My career at Ardrey Kell has been great. I’ve got all con-ference and all region every year and was lead scorer my freshman year. My sophomore year was by far the best because we made it all the way to states. I’m hoping this year will be the same, except this year we get the champi-onship ring.”

Do the Knights have a team that can win the state title this year?“Of course. So far we are on are way with being unde-feated in our conference. Our team is a fighting team that never gives up. We have such great chemistry that helps us stay positive and fight until the end. I could see us go-ing all the way.”

Who do you play club soccer for and what has been your greatest thrill with club soccer?“I play for CSA 94 ECNL. The greatest thing about club soccer is that I travel all around America to do what I love. Some of the girls on my team, I have played with and traveled with since I was 8, so being on my club team is like having a second family. It’s been a great experi-ence and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

How well do you perform in the classroom ?“I have a 3.9 GPA taking all honors and AP courses. I’m in Friends Club and FCA.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH MARK COLLINS

Weddington High School senior Mark Collins is en-joying his senior season of lacrosse for the Warriors. The 1 year old son of Dave and Jane Collins picked up the game at the start of high school and has really enjoyed helping the Warriors build a successful program. Mark plays defense and enjoys the contact aspect of the popular game. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Mark Collins.

What are your top three lacrosse accomplish-ments and memories?

“Scoring my first goal against Charlotte Catholic during my Junior year. I went coast to coast to score and travel-ing to Maryland with my summer team to play some great competition. Some of my best memories are of the really hard body checks I have made during the years. I am re-ally proud that I was named as one of the Captains of the team this year.”

When did you begin playing lacrosse and why?“I started playing my freshman year. I really like the physical nature of the game and by playing defense I get the opportunity to throw some nice hard body checks while protecting my end of the field.”

How has the Weddington season gone so far and how successful can you be in the second half of the season?“The season so far has been going decently. We are cur-rently 2-3, but with many games left. Unfortunately, I was really sick and couldn’t play the last two game. I really wanted to be out there to help my team and I am looking forward to getting back out there as soon as possible. We are looking to improve significantly, win our conference, and hopefully make it deep into the state playoffs.”

What are the primary responsibilities of your posi-tion?“The primary responsibilities for my position are to simply defend our end of the field and stop the other team from scoring. Once that is done it is really important that you have the stick skills to quickly transition the ball to the of-fensive end of the field. We have a very strong defensive unit this year so we believe we can do a great job of stop-ping the other team.”

In addition to school lacrosse, have you played for any club teams over the years?“In addition to school lacrosse I played for Carolina Select. We traveled all along the east coast over the summer play-ing against the top teams in the country.”

How have you performed in the classroom?“I have performed fairly well in the classroom over the years, maintaining a 3.9 GPA. I am a member of the Stu-dent Athlete Honor Society. I also started a volleyball club and was the manager of the girls volleyball team. Along with my brother we created a club called Students Working and Thinking Together that focused on school spirit.”

What are your college plans?“I am really looking forward to attending East Carolina University where I will study exercise physiology and play club lacrosse. Go Pirates!”
