The sure footed forward and mid- fielder for the Hawks will join the Richmond Spiders soccer team next fall. In the interim, Brandon and his Latin teammates have a few goals to accomplish, including winning another state championship. The son of Gus and Rima Jordi started playing soccer as a toddler and it has been quite a ride for the son of a former professional soccer player. “I started playing soccer around age 4,” said Brandon. “My dad was a professional soccer player so he got me into it early and I loved it ever since. I always felt that soccer is in my blood.” Brandon’s resume is quite impressive. He was a member of the US Under 15 National Team, the Region III team and he was also a member of the Charlotte Latin School state championship team as a freshman. Brandon has also earned all-confer- ence honors twice in the previous three years. He has started for the team all four years and has ac- cumulated 43 goals and 28 assists along the way. Those numbers will climb even higher by the end of the season as Brandon shoots for the very impres- sive mark of 50 high school goals. In addition to playing for the Hawks, Brandon plays club soccer for the North Meck Soccer Acad- emy. “It has really helped me develop as a player. The Academy is the highest and most competitive level a youth soccer player can play at and it’s really great to be a part of it and experience such a high level of soccer every season. I have been in the Academy for many years because I joined when I was in the 8th grade.” With Brandon’s success on the soccer field, many college coaches came calling for his services. “I first began to hear from college programs mid- way through my freshman year. They would contact my coach and request that I call them.” With an outstanding academic resume, Brandon was able to develop an impressive list of college fi- nalists. His final five schools included some of the top academic institutions on the East Coast; Rich- mond, Drexel, Cornell, Virginia, and Davidson. As he narrowed down his list, the University of Rich- mond rose to the top and Brandon decided life as a Spider Soccer player would be best. “Academics are very important to me and I was looking for a school that has the combination of great academic standards and a very good soccer program. In addition to Richmond being a great academic school, I was impressed by how nice and beautiful the campus looked. Also compared to the colleges that I visited, Richmond had the best cafeteria which is very important for me as an athlete. When I met with Coach Peay, he told me that he is trying to as- semble a team that can play a “Barcelona” style and that he is looking for players that could fit that style of play. I quickly knew that Richmond would be one of my top choices because that is the style I love to play. I like to play quick one and two touch passes with a lot of give and go’s and a lot of combining with my teammates. I also love to dribble, and I try to bal- ance my style between dribbling , quick passing and moving. Richmond was the best fit for me.” With the tough decision now in the rear view mir- ror, Brandon and his teammates are busy at work for Latin Coach Lee Horton. Brandon has set his goals for the season, “to play good competitive soccer, make it to the final four, and to hopefully win a state championship.” Looking back on the past 13 years of soccer, Bran- don is quick to come up with a major reason for his success. “I feel very lucky that I had and continue to have all good coaches that have helped me over the years develop my skills and love for the game. I am grate- ful to all my coaches and above all to my first coach, my Dad.” Great coaching combined with desire will always take a player to the top as it has for Brandon. While working towards the goals, Brandon is also keeping his focus on the classroom. “As a student athlete and Academy player that attends a very strong college preparatory school, it has been invaluable for me to manage my time effec- tively. I work hard and make A’s and B’s on honors, AP and regular classes.” When Brandon finds spare time, you can always find him with his friends, playing Ping-Pong or locked in on his Xbox video system. FEMALE STUDENT-ATHLETES ... This event is built just for you!

It seems as if sports talk and information for student-athletes is almost

always based on the male student-athlete. Information for the female stu-dent-athlete is hard to come by even in today’s world. Believe it or not what works for the six foot five, 250 pound football player doesn’t translate into a recipe for success for the five foot nine, 110 pound female soccer star. Key ingredients for success are simply not the same for the two sexes. Diets are different, injury concerns are not the same, mental strategies and issues vary, relationships between coaches and student-athletes certainly can be differ-ent. The dynamics of life for a female student-athlete can be 180 degrees differ rent from the male student-athlete.

The South Charlotte Sports Report and Architech Sports and Physical Therapy recognizes the unique challenges of female student-athletes. Three years ago, our two companies set out to develop a female-sports summit that would offer unique and detailed information to help all the local female stu-dent-athletes. This program, The Female Sports Summit has grown into a very important event for middle and high school female-student athletes and their parents. On October 8th at the Morrison YMCA, we will host the 3rd Annual Female Sports Summit and we urge every female athlete and their parents to find the time to attend this affordable morning of information.

We truly believe the four hours you spend at this event will be far more valuable than any four hour period of training. With the combination of na-tionally recognized speakers and informative topics, each student-athlete will walk away from the summit with information to help them succeed in reach-ing their goals. The topics include:

Five Dangers Facing Every Female Student-Athlete and How to Prevent Them So You Can Reach Maximal PerformanceThe Mental Side of Athletics - Are you Your Own Worst Enemy?Performance Nutrition For The Female Student-AthleteEating Disorders - What You Must Know.Life In College - The Transition from High School Athlete to College. Recruiting and Title IV - Do’s and Don’ts To Get Noticed By College CoachesPreventing Knee Injuries In The Female Student-AthletePutting It All Together - A Game Plan For SuccessPlus Other Roundtable Discussions

Take advantage of the Fast Break Savings Coupon on the front cover

and enroll before September 20th for only $24. Parents attend free with their children.

We believe that spending four hours at the 3rd Annual Female Sports-Summit could be the best four hours your female-student athlete spends all season long.

SECOND ANNUAL BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE 5k ROAD RACE

The Big South Conference announced today its second annual 5K Road Race

has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8 at 8:00am at the Blakeney Shopping Cen-ter, and will again serve as a fundraising opportunity for middle school athletics programs in the Charlotte area. Last year’s inaugural event was one of the top new races in Charlotte and raised $10,000 for middle school athletic programs in Mecklenburg and Union counties.

Online registration is now open at the official race website, www.BigSouth5K.com. The first 200 to sign up will receive a $10 gift card courtesy of Play It Again Sports, while the first 100 will receive an additional gift from the Big South Con-ference. The entry fee is $20 for pre-registered runners by Sept. 30 and includes an official race t-shirt, and $25 after Sept. 30. Runners can also sign up on race day starting at 7:00am. Individuals also have the option of supporting the event and a specific school by signing up as a “phantom runner” for $20, and includes a race t-shirt. The Big South 5K Road Race will feature a finish line party of awards, music, food, games, vendors and giveaways. Big South Conference member in-stitutions will also have booths set-up on race day providing school information and giveaways.

During the registration process, participants will have the option of selecting a “middle school affiliation,” and when a middle school is selected, a percentage of the participant’s registration fee will be sent to the selected middle school’s athletic booster club. Additional proceeds from the race will also be used to sup-port the Student Athlete Foundation of Mecklenburg County, which provides as-sistance to save and maintain the middle school sports program in Mecklenburg County.

Close to 1,000 registrants took part in last year’s 5K run and more than 40 local businesses supported the event. A total of 46 middle schools (32 in Meck-lenburg County and 14 in Union County) were designated by participants as ben-eficiaries for a percentage of registration fees from the race, and these schools received a majority of the $10,000 raised.

A new Facebook page dedicated to the race, www.facebook.com/BigSouth5K-RoadRace, has been created and includes an interactive page that features race information for participants as well as weekly giveaways from race sponsors every Wednesday. Businesses interested in being a supporter of the 2011 Big South 5K Road Race should contact Chad Cook at 704-341-7990 or [email protected].

With 19 teams and 560 players, The Wesley Chapel Weddington Athletic As-sociation (WCWAA) Pop Warner Foot-ball Program is among the top youth football programs in the state. Strong program leadership, supportive parents and experienced coaches have allowed the eight year old program to grow year after year. WCWAA has experienced steady and consistent growth since its inception but saw an unprecedented rise in participation this year with the number of players growing by 20%. This years program has seven Mighty-Mite, eight Jr. Pee-Wee, two Pee Wee, one Jr. Midget and one Midget Football Team. WCWAA Football Commissioner

James Shipley sat down with the South Charlotte Sports Report to talk about the Titans Football Program. What has allowed the WCWAA Program to become so strong? “The parental support and dedication of the families involved in WCWAA is the strongest asset of our program. Equally as strong and perhaps the most unique asset of our program is the involvement of area high school coaches and working closely with these high school booster programs to inte-grate WCWAA athletes into the com-munity. The WCWAA is like a feeder program for Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge, and Weddington schools. In the past, the high school coaches and play-ers have run our week-long summer football camp so our boys are getting to know them at a very young age and have a heartfelt affiliation with them and the community schools. Addition-ally the high schools have run WCWAA nights where our players are allowed free entry to the home high school game if they wear their Titans uni-forms. On these nights the stands are packed with WCWAA Titans and often they are the loudest and most enthusi-astic fans at the game.” What practice and game facilities do the Titans have? “The WCWAA uses Weddington Opti-mist Park as its home base. There are two fields, one is a grass field and the other is a state-of-the-art turf field that

we installed three years ago. We also lease fields from several area churches to accommodate all of our teams prac-tice sessions.” How does WCWAA go about se-lecting its coaches? “WCWAA coaches are a volunteer posi-tion that must submit to the security of a background check and an interview with the Football Board of Directors that evaluates their experience and compatibility. Our coaches are gener-ally the fathers of players and most get started coaching in the Mitey-Mite division and stay with us throughout the time their sons participate. We are also lucky to have several dedicated men that offer their time and exper-tise without having any player in the program. I am always humbled by the enthusiasm, dedication, and football expertise that is available in our area. Our boys are very lucky. “ As you look into the future of WC-WAA what do you envision for the football program? “I see continued growth for the WC-WAA in participation numbers and more new facilities. We are currently evaluating land opportunities that could allow us to accommodate our growth.” Can you talk about some of the shining moments that stick out in your mind for your teams and players?

“The WCWAA boys are high achiev-ers. Fifteen to 20% of our kids are PopWarner Scholastic All Americans. This means they have straight ‘A’s in school and exceptional extracirricular involvement in addition to playing football. WCWAA also is the top pro-ducer in the league of PopWarner All Americans with twelve players being awarded the distinguished ‘First Team’ designation. The WCWAA also has won the coveted Doc Martin Sports-manship Award several times in its eight years of existence.” Can you talk a little about the Pop Warner Academic program and how your players have been recognized for their work in the classroom?“Approximately 50 boys were Pop-Warner National Scholars last season. I expect that this many and more will be evaluated in the upcoming season. The boys are evaluated on grades, extracirricular activities, community service, and personal recommenda-tions.” The South Charlotte Sports Report sa-lutes WCWAA for their commitment to growing their youth football program. A successful program in any sport takes outstanding leadership, energetic par-ents and committed student-athletes. WCWAA has all of these components and we expect continued growth from the Titans program.

CharlottePreps.TV was created through a partnership between SSM and OrthoCarolina, a leader in sports medicine in southern North Carolina . Entering its second year, Charlot-tePreps.TV not only focuses on the

twenty-three high school programs in the city of Charlotte and in Mecklen-burg county but also there is an effort underway to highlight the great attri-butes of the numerous youth football league and teams.

“OrthoCarolina is excited to be a part of this awesome program,” said Blair Primis, Marketing and Public Relations Director for OrthoCarolina. “Being able to showcase the great high school and youth talent in the area, especially in such a cool and modern fashion is great. Given the increasing role of social media and how it con-nects us to our community, we felt CharlottePreps.tv and OrthoCaro-

lina were a great fit for promoting the community sports scene in the Char-lotte region.”

Primis’ reference to social media alludes to the new capabilities that fans will have in engaging the web-site. Visitors to the site will have an opportunity to upload photos and videos of their favorite athlete, using CharlottePreps.TV as a sharing com-munity designed specifically for the Charlotte Area. In addition, fans can keep up with scores throughout all of the prep stadiums during the varsity season, all through the website’s mo-bile application.

“There are several nationwide

prep websites dedicated to football,” states Justin Simpson, Vice President for Scholastic Sports Marketing. “But because of our incredible partnership with OrthoCarolina, we’ve been able to develop a truly local, one-of-a-kind space for everyone who enjoys foot-ball in the Charlotte area.”

As with many websites, Charlot-tePreps.TV will continue to evolve throughout the fall. With the start of the high school season, both SSM and OrthoCarolina are proud to reintro-duce this unique site.

4TH ANNUAL BASKETBALL BOOT CAMP IS SET

The 4th Annual South Charlotte

Sports Report Basketball Boot Camp will be held October 22nd and 23rd. This annual pre-season camp reach-es sell out capacity each year. Led by Ardrey Kell High School Head Bas-ketball Coach Mike Craft, the camp is designed to prepare area players for the upcoming season. The camp is divided into two groups, Middle School Camp and Youth Camp.

The Middle School players will focus on techniques and drills to pre-pare them for the upcoming middle school tryout process. Coach Craft offers strategies designed to help

middle school players catch the coaches eye and in turn have a greater chance of earning a spot on the team. With a background that includes both Division 1 Col-lege and High School coaching, Coach Craft has a wealth of knowledge to offer to both boys and girls hoping to earn a spot on their school team.

“The Basketball Boot Camp is the best camp I ever attended,” said Alex Smith, an eighth grader. “I didn’t think I had a chance to make my school team as a sev-enth grader, but some of the strategies and mental focus that Coach Craft shared helped me to get over that barrier and earn a spot on my team. I am going back again this year to work more with Coach Craft.”

The youth players will work on building a strong fundamental base to enter into the season on a high note. Our goal is to get each player comfortable again on the basketball court and help to prepare them for their most successful season ever. Many of the same drills the middle school campers will employ will transfer over to the youth camp.

Both camps will be held at the same time, 3pm-6pm on Saturday and Sunday. Camp enrollment is limited to keep the focus on instruction and reaching our set goals with the camp. To guarantee your spot, please enroll today at www.south-charlottesportscamps.com

Only a high school sophomore, 15 year old Sydney Foreman is running in the front of the pack for most of her cross country races this season. The Ardrey Kell High School student is the daughter of John and Lisa Fore-man and she continues to improve

her times with every race. Sydney is described by her teammates as a dedicated runner with great potential. A look at her personal records shows outstanding success for a 15 year old runner; 1600M in 5:09, 3200M in 10:56 and a 5K Cross Country per-sonal record of 18:38. Sydney partici-pates in all three sports seasons with cross country, swimming and track and field. Her work in the classroom is equally impressive with a straight A record. Let’s go beyond the game with Sydney Foreman.

When did you begin running and why? “I began running at my old school in Wilmington , Delaware when I was 9 years old. When I was a third grader, I joined the track team and when I was a fourth grader, I started running cross country. My big sister who is two years older than me was running for the school team at the time and I saw how much she enjoyed running so I decided that I wanted to give it a try. Ever since then, I have run for my school’s track and cross country teams and have loved the sport.”

Your performance has been re-ally strong this fall, can you feel yourself becoming a better run-

ner with each race? “It is still very early in the season but I felt pretty strong and was certainly ready for the season to begin. I definitely am feeling myself grow as a runner with each race I run in and can see the improvement in my runs.”

What do you attribute the im-provement to? “I attribute my success so far to all my training this summer with my teammates at Ardrey Kell. We have been working really hard this year and have set some pretty high goals for ourselves this season. Also, I have to give credit to the wonderful coaches. Coach Zelk has prepared us really well for this season and has taught me so much since I have been at Ardrey Kell.”

Describe your training routine? “My team and I train pretty much ev-ery day of the week with an occasion-al day off. We rotate between long easy runs, tempo runs, and shorter distance runs at a faster pace. Also, this year I incorporated some core workouts and weight training to help improve my overall fitness.” What are your goals for this season?

“My goals for this season are to help our team finish as one of the top teams in the state and I am striving to break 18 minutes in a race. Our hope is to win conference and region-al championships so that we are in a good position to compete for the state championship. It would be great to win a state championship but we know there is going to be some seri-ous competition out there. We need to stay healthy as a team and peak at the right point of the season in order to achieve these goals.”

Do you enjoy cross country or track more? “I really like competing in both Cross Country and Track.”

Have you put much thought into college and running? “To run in college is a major goal of mine. I would love to be recruited and get to run at a Division I school.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “I am a straight-A student. This year, I am taking an AP class and many honors courses. In addition, I swim at Ardrey Kell during the win-ter sports season.”

MIA KANE Charlotte Latin School senior Mia Kane has been named the Ar-chitech Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week. The 17 year old daughter of Jeff and Mimi Kane has found success in field hockey, soccer and inside the classroom at Charlotte Latin.

Mia was introduced to field hockey in 7th grade P.E. class and she enjoyed the similarities to another sport she played, soccer. Mia plays the position of inner-left forward and she works hard to keep the ball away from her teams defense and to create scoring op-portunities. Last season Mia helped the undefeated Hawks to win their first ever field hockey state championship and she was also

named to the all-region team. Mia has continued her success this season by scoring multiple goals early in the season for Coach Deb Savino.

Mia also plays on the four-time defending state champion soccer team for Charlotte Latin. She spent most of last season on the injury list, but she is looking forward to a healthy return this spring.

Success in the classroom is also part of Mia’s impressive resume. She recorded a 3.85 grade point average for her junior year. Mia enjoys history and English classes at Char-lotte Latin. Congratulations to Mia Kane for being named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week.

MARK HARRELLCharlotte Catholic High School senior football player Mark Har-rell has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week. The son of Hayden and Carol Harrell is one of the leaders of the undefeated Charlotte Catholic Cougars football team. Next season, Mark will be a member of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team.

Mark, a lineman for Head Coach Jim Oddo stands over six feet, five inches tall and tips the scales at over 270 pounds. He has been ranked among the top 125 high school players by many recruiting analysts. His size and passion for the game earned

scholarship offers from some of the top programs in the country, but Mark elected to commit to the Irish in May. The Cougars run the legendary Wing-T offense which includes a full house backfield. On many occasions this season, the three primary run-ners, David Herlocker, Elijah Hood and Alex Sabates run through holes opened up by Mark. The Cougars are considered one of the top running teams in the state and Mark is a big part of that success.

Once football season comes to an end, Mark can be found on the basketball court as one of the leading players for the Cougars team. Mark also succeeds in the classroom with solid resume of A’s and B’s.

Congratulations to Mark Harrell for being named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week.

Team Carolina Baseball won the Greater Charlotte All American Bash, going 4-0 in the tournament.

Weddington High School senior run-ner Jonathan Bivens is fast becoming one of the top cross country perform-ers in the area. The seventeen year old son of Jon and Lisa Bivens is on pace for a top-ten finish in the state and race wins this season! Let’s go beyond the game with Jonathan Bivens.

When did you start to run and why?“I first started running when I was in 6th grade. I hated it because I wasn’t used to running long dis-tances, but I stuck with it with en-couragement from my mom and by around 8th grade I was in love with running.”

Do you prefer cross country or track? “I prefer Cross Country because of the close relationships I share with my team. I spend all summer run-ning hundreds of miles with them and going to long distance camp. When track starts the football team joins to stay in shape and they usually disrupt the companionship between the athletes. I also prefer cross country because it is one race as opposed to multiple races at track meets.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments? “My top three accomplishments are going to the state meet and placing 13th as an junior, setting the all-time school record at Weddington High, and coming together with my team my senior year and learning to re-ally appreciate and make friends with all of the fellow runners I race against.”

What are some of your personal records?“Some of my personal records are: 15:52 in the 5k, 9:41 in the 2 mile, 4:31 in the mile. 2:02 in the 800M.”

Describe your training and any special diets? “I train every day and focus on improving myself and meeting my goals. I try to eat healthy especially before meets and drink plenty of water.” What are your goals for this season?“I want to beat my own record from last year and push my team to be the best they can be. I’ll see where I end up later on in the season. I’d prefer not to announce my goals to rival teams this early in the season.”

Any thoughts of running in college?“I’ll be running in college for sure. There’s no question about it.” How well do you perform in the classroom? “I take honors and AP classes, but tend to slack off on my homework, which pulls my GPA down slightly.”
