Montague Ave. Suite A-200 - North Charleston, SC 29418 Stingrays Open 2-Game Set in Orlando Thursday Night The South Carolina Stingrays begin a 3-game week on Thursday night in Orlando with the first of two straight matchups against the Solar Bears. Thursday’s contest is the 10th meeting of the season between the South Division opponents. South Carolina has won seven of the previous nine contests and holds an overall record of 7-1-1 against the Solar Bears during the 2019-20 season. After this week’s series, their final matchup of the regular season will come on March 11. Most recently, the Stingrays have dropped three straight for the first time all season with losses to Greenville, Norfolk and Florida. Orlando began their week on Wednesday evening with a 1-0 win in overtime over Florida on the road in Estero. South Carolina allows a league-low 2.24 goals per game while boasting the top penalty kill in the ECHL at 90.6%. The Solar Bears are fifth-best in the league defensively, allowing an average of 2.75 goals per game. Orlando is also third on the penalty kill, discarding 87.8% of their opponents’ power plays. Blades Use Early Push To Get By Rays Cam Maclise had a three-point night with two goals and an assist and the Florida Everblades rode an early lead to a 5-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays in front of 5,892 fans on Nickelodeon Night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Forward Dan DeSalvo registered a goal and an assist in a losing effort for South Carolina, while defender Tariq Hammond scored his third goal of the year and goaltender Logan Thompson finished with 44 saves. SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYSOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYScouting The Solar BearsOrlando is in fourth place in the South Division with 46 pointsand a record of 20-18-5-1 in 44 games. Rookie forward TristinLangan was leading the team with 30 points this season and a +21 rating before he was recently recalled by the San Jose Barracuda. D-man Michael Brodzinski, who has played in all 44 of the club’s contests, has totaled 28 points on four goals and 24 assists. Behind him, Trevor Olson has earned 26 points on 15 goals and 11 assists. A recent trade brought former SC forward Taylor Cammarata to the Solar Bears, who has totaled 29 points this season which is second-most on the team. Cammarata scored the only goal in Orlando’s 1-0 overtime win over Florida on Wednesday evening. Goaltenders Zach Fucale and Clint Windsor have split the bulk of the playing time this season for Orlando. Windsor has won 10 contests in 21 appearances and has a goals-against of 2.38 along with a 0.927 save percentage.

All-Time History vs. Orlando South Carolina has an all-time regular season record of 48-18-5-5vs. the Solar Bears, with the two teams having faced each other 76times over the last eight campaigns. In 11 contests during 2018-19,the Stingrays had the edge with a record of 6-5. The clubs have metin the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs in back-to-back seasons,with Orlando advancing in both years. The Solar Bears prevailedin five games last spring after a 4-game sweep in 2018. This year,SC has taken seven of the first nine meetings with a 7-1-1 record.

Novak Catches Fire Forward Max Novak had another big week and is now in the top-20 in overall ECHL scoring with 41 points, putting him even with Dan DeSalvo for the team lead. Novak has points in six of his last eight games and last week scored five points with four goals and an assist in three games. The Union College alum had a huge night on Saturday when he scored his first professional hat trick as part of a 4-point game. During the month of January, Novak led the Rays with 16 points on eight goals and eight assists.

Top-Ranked Penalty Kill South Carolina currently has the best penalty killing percentage in the ECHL, discarding 90.6% of their opponents’ power play opportunities during the 2019-20 season. In 170 times shorthanded this season, the Rays have allowed just 16 power play goals. SC has been particularly good on the penalty kill in their 21 home contests, allowing just five goals during 75 power play chances to give themselves a 93.3% success rate which also leads the league. On the road, South Carolina has killed off 88.4% of their 95 penalties.

DeSalvo Scoring In Bunches Forward Dan DeSalvo, who is tied for the team lead with 41 points this season, leads the club with 13 multi-point efforts this year. The Rolling Meadows, Ill. native had multiple points in both of South Carolina’s games last weekend, scoring two goals and an assist in Friday’s game before adding a goal and an assist on Saturday night. This season DeSalvo has totaled three multi-goal games, all of which have come at home in North Charleston. His 17 tallies are second-most on the club.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYLeaders Against Orlando Forward Dan DeSalvo leads the Stingrays in scoring this seasonagainst the Solar Bears, posting 13 points in nine games on sevengoals and six assists. His linemates Max Novak (2g, 9a) and MarkCooper (4g, 7a) are just behind him, totaling 11 points apieceagainst Orlando. Goaltender Parker Milner has four wins against theSolar Bears while Logan Thompson has three victories, includingboth of his first two professionals shutouts on Dec. 28 and Nov. 30. Thompson has allowed just four goals in his four appearances for a goals-against average of 1.01 along with a 0.961 save percentage.

Stingrays Acquire Defender Neal Goff The Stingrays announced a trade with the Kansas City Mavericks Monday to acquire defenseman Neal Goff in exchange for forward Mitch Vanderlaan. Goff, 26, is in his second professional season and has appeared in 37 games with the Mavericks this season, earning five points with a goal and four assists. The Stillwater, Minn. native also spent the 2018-19 season in Kansas City alongside current SC skaters Mark Cooper and Jordan Klimek, posting eight assists in 55 appearances before suiting up for three playoff games. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound defender has seen action in 96 total ECHL games after beginning his pro career at the end of the 2017-18 season with the Colorado Eagles and playing in four games. He also made his AHL debut with the San Antonio Rampage at the end of 2017-18 and appeared in three contests.

Cooper Hits 40-Point Mark With an assist in Saturday’s game, Mark Cooper earned his 40th point of the season. It’s the third time in his ECHL career that he’s had at least 40 points in a campaign. His career-high of 47 points came while he was with the Kansas City Mavericks during the 2017-18 season.

Early Success South Carolina has a record of 24-2-2 when they’ve scored the first goal in a game this season. The Rays have scored first in 28 of their 45 games so far this year, meaning they’ve earned the opening goal of a game in 62.2% of their 2019-20 contests.

Norfolk Comes From Behind To Stun Rays, 8-6The Norfolk Admirals came back from a three-goal deficit in the third period to defeat the Stingrays Friday night by a final score of 8-6 in a wild game at the North Charleston Coliseum. Max Novak led the way on the offensive end for the Rays with a 4-point night that included three goals for his first professional hat trick as well as an assist. Forward Dan DeSalvo also had a big night for SC with two goals and an assist. The Stingrays piled up 50 shots on goal in the game, their highest output of the 2019-20 season.

South Carolina forwards Andrew Cherniwchan and Max Novak each scored during the second, while goaltender Logan Thompson turned aside 34 shots in a losing effort.
