GettingÊ EngagedIs just the Beginning ... Now what?

Are you one of the thousands of couples who got engaged over the holidays? This is the time for you and your soon-to-be to get every-

thing you ever wanted -- whether youÕ re starting from scratch, upgrading, expanding or replacing. Turn a whole bunch of mismatched mine and yours into a lifetime of ours.

ÒWh en it comes to registering, relax, take your time and have fun,Ó r ecommends Audrey Stavish, a Bridal and Gift Registry expert at Bed Bath & Be-yond. ÒM ost brides update their registries online and go into the stores many times. There arenÕ t any rules that you must follow. Choose items that are right for you and your soon-to-be. Go through the registry process together and have fun!Ó

Here are some additional tips to make wedding planning a breeze:

Plan Ahead: Start a bridal registry as soon as you say Òy es.Ó T hat way guests will have lots of

options for engagement gifts and showers. Pe-riodically update your registry by adding more products if you need to, even after the wedding. Be kind to procrastinators.

Do the Math: Experts advise registering for 2-3 items times the number of guests you plan to have. Close friends and family will rely on your registry for special events leading up to the wed-ding -- such as engagement parties, bridal show-ers, and holidays! Your guests will appreciate having lots of choices when they shop for you. Be sure to refresh your list regularly as gifts get purchased.

Register Now, Because You WonÕ t Buy it Later: You may think you will ... but you wonÕ t. Now is the time to let others get you the stuff youÕ d never buy yourself. Your friends and family might even get together to purchase a higher priced Òg roup gift.Ó

■ Dream Big: Register for gifts in a range of prices and categories. This will give guests and group givers lots of options to choose from.

■ Remember the Rule of Three: When it comes to setting your table, if you choose bold patterns for your china and fl atware, pick a more simple style of glassware. Prefer intricate stemware? Pair it with simpler patterns of china and fl atware. So, it’s bold/bold/simple or simple/simple/bold.

■ Visit a Store: It’s in YOUR best interest to visit a store and schedule an appointment with an expert consultant who can help you with your gift selections and share great tips like “The Rule of Three,” what cookware you will need to prepare your favorite dish, what knife to use when and much more. When making your selections, it’s important to touch the towels, heft the fl atware, see everything in person!

■ C’mon Back: Most couples don’t make all their selections in a single spree. Plan on making multiple visits.

Once you’ve set up your reg-istry, take advantage of Bed Bath & Beyond’s Bridal Toolkit(R), the complimentary wedding planning tools available at bedbathand-beyond.com, including your own Personal Wedding Web site, budgeter, task manager, guest list manager, gift tracker and even a seating arranger. This way, all of your information can be stored in one convenient place.

Congratulations and best wishes on your engagement. Now get registering and let the gift-giving begin.

TheÊ WeddingÊ PartyWhat are your responsibilities?

As weddings have become less regimented and more expensive, the traditional bridal party is often pared down to a best man and a bridesmaid or two. Their

roles, however, have remained constant through the years.

Whether the wedding youÕ ve got in mind is large or small, formal or casual, conventional or original, itÕ s help-ful to have a sense of the roles that bridal party members have played through the years. ■ Maid of Honor -- Usually the closest friend of the

bride and sometimes a relative. A married, divorced, widowed, or older woman might be called the matron of honor. She assists with the details of the wedding plans, like shopping for the bridal gown, addressing invitations and choosing fl owers. She arranges the bridal shower in conjunction with the brideÕ s family, is in charge of coordi-nating the bridesmaids and organizing fi ttings, and typi-cally signs the couple’s certifi cate of marriage or wedding license as a legal witness. At the reception, she should stand immediately after the groom in the receiving line.■ Best Man -- Commonly the groomÕ s best friend,

relative or not, the best man is in charge of instructing

the ushers and coordinating the groomÕ s transportation to the ceremony. He usually holds the rings until the ceremony and will also sign the marriage certifi cate as a legal witness. At the reception, he holds a place of honor, escorting the maid of honor in the receiving line and in all other wedding party activities. HeÕ s also the toastmaster, offering the fi rst toast to the couple.■ Bridesmaids and Ushers -- Typically friends or rela-

tives of the bride, bridesmaids may be asked to coordi-nate special details during the ceremony preparations or at the reception, and assist the bride and the maid of honor. Ushers (sometimes also known as groomsmen) should be prepared for an early arrival at the ceremony to escort female guests to their seats. During the ceremony, they will escort the bridesmaids down the aisle. They may also be asked to coordinate the guestsÕ trip from the ceremony to the reception as well as assist the groom and the best man.■ Flower Girl and Ring Bearer -- The fl ower girl carries

a basket of fl ower petals to sprinkle down the aisle, or fl owers to be passed out to the women seated near the aisle. The ring bearer may either escort the fl ower girl down the aisle, or follow her, with the rings on a pillow.

Weddings can be expensive, time-consuming and stressful to plan. Few couples embroiled in the process havenÕ t thought about

running away to elope. ItÕ s certainly spontane-ous and can be cost-effective. But is it for you?

Roughly 100,000 couples head to Las Vegas each year to say their ÒI Dos.Ó V egas is the self-proclaimed wedding capital of the world. With a growing number of celebrities and high-profile individuals running off to get hitched in low-key ceremonies, eloping can seem quite enticing. Consider these pros and cons before you book your airline tickets.

Advantages

There are several advantages to eloping. The foremost reason is cost. Couples who elope at City Hall or close by will pay a nominal fee for their nuptials. A marriage license may only be around $50 or more, and your other expenses will be wardrobe and transportation to and from the event. Eloping is also a viable idea for couples with family issues. If some members of the family do not get along or if there are individuals who donÕ t ap-prove of the marriage, it can be easier to avoid the drama of a wedding ceremony and reception and get married in a small, simple ceremony ... alone. A bride who has lost her father or mother may choose to forego the pomp and circumstance of walking down the aisle for a simpler ceremony.

Another reason to elope is to avoid the stress and hassle of planning the wedding. Some people are born organizers and planners. Others get over-whelmed just deciding on what to eat for dinner. When eloping, the only things couples must plan are the where, when and how of the event. Fewer people involved means fewer hassles.

ResponsibilityÊof Êthe ÊG roomsmen

Happy couples choose friends and family members to serve as atten-dants in their weddings. Brides-maids and groomsmen each have

different responsibilities in the wedding. In ancient times, groomsmen essentially

served as the groomÕ s bodyguards, ensuring that he made it safely to the altar and to his future wife. Today, the groomsmenÕ s roles are not based on saving life and limb.

TodayÕ s groomsmen serve as assistants to the groom and help plan the bachelor party. They also usher guests down the aisle at the ceremony. They also may have a few other responsibilities, depending on what the couple wants of their as-sistants.

Before the Wedding

Many weddings adhere to tradition, with a big church wedding, a white gown and a bustling reception.

Still, there are some couples who-prefer to do something a bit unique and uncon-ventional. They may choose to get married under-water or while skydiving.

If a Ò creativeÓ wedding is for you, here are some ideas to think about.■ Prison wedding: A visit to an abandoned

prison or haunted location may appeal to the couple with a taste for the macabre.■ Skydiving: The concept of taking the plunge

takes on an entirely new meaning when jumping out of a plane at several thousand feet while recit-ing vows.■ Wedding of the Ò StarsÓ : Trekkies may want to

recite vows while dressed in costume and speak-ing native Klingon, while Star Wars fans may want to do so with Storm Troopers attending the festivities.■ Mountain climbing: Couples can reach new

heights while scaling a mountainside and saying their Ò I dos.Ó■ Life in the fast lane: Couples who are NAS-

CAR fans can recite their vows and then take a spin at 200 mph around a neighborhood track.■ Amused festivities: Some couples might

prefer to get hitched while enjoying the ups and downs of their favorite roller coaster or other amusement park rides.■ Scuba diving: Some couples prefer to recite

their vows with a few bubbles in between and marine life as their witnesses.

TakeÊi tÊO utside!

Outdoor wedding popularity is on the rise. According to statistics offered by Hudson Valley Weddings, 35 percent of weddings are now outdoor occasions.

Gardens and parks top the list of outdoor locales for weddings, followed by beaches.

Having a wedding outdoors can be a beautiful event, but more than traditional weddings, outdoor weddings must take Mother Nature into heavy consideration.

Consider these other tips to increase the fun and keep stress at bay.■ Visit the venue for a guestsÕ -eye view: ItÕ s

important to visit your wedding site and view the surroundings as your guests will experience them on your wedding day. Consider where and how the sun shines at that hour of the day, so guests wonÕ t be blinded and uncomfortable. Make sure the venue is set up so everyone can have an unobstructed view of the happy couple. Keep temperature in mind as well. Will guests be too hot or too cold, and are there ways to correct those issues? ■ Rain, shine or something in between: Naturally

you will have to consider precipitation on your wedding day. Putting the Òg ood luck factorÓ o f a rainy wedding day aside, few people want to sit through a ceremony when rain or snow is falling. Therefore ensure that the venue has an indoor op-tion if absolutely need be, or at the least a suitable outdoor sheltered area.■ Expect the unexpected: Unexpected guests may

show up to your wedding (of the furry or feathered kind) if it takes place outdoors. There also may be ambient noises or other distractions. Also, itÕ s not uncommon for the weather to change relatively quickly, despite how adamant the local weather per-son was that it would be sunny all day. ItÕ s vital to remain calm no matter what bumps come up along the way. If you can weather the inconveniences and unexpected things, guests will be better equipped to remember the overall positive experience of your wedding instead of the minor details that had the potential to derail it.■ There she blows: The wind can be something

couples do not anticipate on their wedding day. From photos to outdoor receptions, a windy day

Page 23: South Bridal 2011

Wedding Planner 2011 • 23

can wreak more havoc than rain sometimes. Wind can launch tablecloths and set favors airborne. It can also catch your veil and blow hairstyles into disarray. If you prefer not to have the wind in your hair and face, go to Plan B and move the party indoors.n Bugs and allergies:

Keep in mind seasonal allergies and insect invad-ers at an outdoor wedding. You donÕ t want guests sneezing or swatting. Pack allergy relief pills and keep citronella candles or pleasant-smelling bug spray in courtesy baskets at the reception so guests can ensure the sniffles and buzzing bug-off.n Dress accordingly: It

is common courtesy to let your guests know that a portion or all of the wed-ding will be hosted out-doors. This way they can bring what they need to be comfortable. For the wedding party and the bride and groom, outdoor conditions should also be factored into wardrobe de-cisions. A shorter gown or more casual clothing may work better for a beach wedding. Avoid strapless gowns and don sheaths or jackets if the wedding is outdoors in cooler weather. Remember, itÕ s not just about looking good, but about feeling good and enjoying yourself at the wedding as well.

Everyone is looking for ways to save money during the recession. Many are brown bagging their lunches, car pooling and getting their hair cut and

colored less often. Wherever youÕ ve chosen to cut back, you still can keep yourself looking fresh and modern. Here are a few tips on what you can do to look your best on a budget.

1) Protect your hair from sun damage. The sun naturally lightens your hair and oxidizes color-treated hair. Look for products that shield your hair from harmful ultraviolet rays, so you can maintain your hair color for longer.

2) Treat damaged hair. Taking a few moments to repair your hair could be all you need to refresh your look.

3) Maintain your color at home. You can make your color last longer by treating it right and choos-

ing products designed to extend the life of color.4) Extend the time between haircuts. If youÕ ve

been yearning for long hair, now may be the per-fect time to start growing out your cut. Cutting in choppy layers keeps your hair looking groomed and minimizes the appearance of split ends. Set up an appointment with your stylist to discuss a look that requires minimal upkeep.

5) More for less. Always check for larger sizes of your favorite products to make sure you are getting the most value for the money. Often you can get twice as much product for just a few more dollars.

With a little forethought and planning, you can continue to look your best, while sticking to your budget. Considering the best at-home treatments, choosing a cut and color that works and protecting your hair from the elements, all go a long way to keep you current and solvent.

The multi-tiered cake that is a favorite wedding tradition thatÕ s often presented at the end of the night. The happy couple takes a slice and enjoys the fi rst piece.

In recent years, wedding cakes have become more of an artistic centerpiece than just a confec-tionary treat. Couples often seek out renowned wedding cake bakers for a cake that will amaze the crowd and complete the theme of the wedding.

The average couple will spend between $700 to $800 for their wedding cake. Although many cater-ing halls or reception sites will include the wedding cake in a package deal, many couples choose to order their cake from a specialty bakery who creates culinary masterpieces.

If television trends are any indication, many people are opting to spend several hundred to thou-sands of dollars on a customized wedding cake. These fondant and buttercream creations may be elaborate in nature, so much so theyÕ ll likely need to be ordered several months in advance.

Couples looking for something a bit different for

their upcoming nuptials, many want to consider these trends in wedding cakes.

■ 3-D accents on the cake, such as graphic appli-ques.

■ A black-and-white motif that gives the cake a simplistic, yet trendy appeal.

■ A lot of bold color in the cake, instead of just white or ivory.

■ Dramatic monograms that can add class to the cake.

■ Painted cakes with edible food coloring paint that feature beautiful landscapes or a portrait. A work of art, theyÕ re both delicious to eat and fun to admire.

■ Cakes that mirror the style of the wedding gown, including fondant ruffl es and appliques.

Many couples still opt for the traditional, and that is always in style. Instead of experimenting with the outside of the cake, couples can be creative with cake fl avor and fi llings. Imagine cutting open the cake to fi nd red velvet or a chocolate ganache fi lling!

Dress for Success

Wedding Planner 2011 • 27

For most brides-to-be, the choice of a dress is among the first and most important decisions in planning a wed-ding. With thousands of choices in every price range, finding the perfect wedding dress can be a difficult and

time-consuming process. But by making some decisions before set-ting foot in a store, the search will be both easier and a whole lot

more enjoyable.

First things First

Start by knowing your limits. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend on a dress -- and don’t forget to include all the little extras, such as undergarments, shoes, jewelry, veil, and/or hair ornaments. Next, take an inventory of your personal style. If you know that you’re not comfortable in strapless or

sleeveless dresses, for example, you can immediately elimi-nate these options. The trick is to rule out a few style options before hitting the magazines or stores and then be open to all other options.

Firm yet Flexible

There will be no shortage of opinions -- from mothers, sisters, friends, and store personnel -- about your choice of a wedding dress, but the decision, ultimately, is the bride’s alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but reserve the right to choose the look that feels right to you. With so many potential options, you might want to consider bringing along a camera and taking photos of yourself in the dresses that could be Ò contenders.Ó

Page 28: South Bridal 2011

28 • Wedding Planner 2011

Go for a Flattering Fit

Remember: Your goal is to find a dress that flatters your body and expresses your personal style -- not to fit into a particular size. If you look ghostly in white, feel free to choose a creamier shade or a dress that has decorative accents of a different color near your neck, shoulders and face. Similarly, there’s no rule that a wedding dress has to be floor-length. If you’re planning a daytime or more casual wedding, you might want to consider a tea-length dress (one that falls a few inches above the ankle) or go even shorter.

Comfort is Key

Style and fit may be the two most important factors in choosing a wedding dress, but comfort should be a close third. Ask yourself if you will be comfortable in a particular dress given the set-ting in which your wedding will take place. For instance, if you’ve always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, you may want to forego a dress with a long, trailing train that could trip you up on your walk to or down the aisle. Even if you’re planning an indoor event, having a dress and shoes that are as comfortable as they are beautiful will greatly increase your odds of enjoying your special day.

Environmentally friendly ideals are now permeat-ing all aspects of daily living. Many people

want to take the concept further and ensure their nuptials -- and subsequent reception -- are good for the planet as well.

Although there are no fi rm sta-tistics on the number of green wed-dings being held each year, emerg-ing trends point to the growing interest in eco-conscious weddings. Individuals who already do their best to recycle, reuse and reduce want to employ those same values on their wedding day.

There are many ways to employ a green mindset to wedding planning and execution. Largely the car-bon footprint of a wedding can be reduced simply by scaling back and avoiding over-consumption. Here are some ideas to think about.

1. Reduce travel. Research in-dicates that more than two-thirds of emissions in the U.S. are pro-duced by energy consumption and transportation. By reducing guestsÕ need to travel far for a wedding or offering transportation that can ac-commodate several people at once (like a bus), carbon emissions will be reduced.

2. Home is where the heart is. Keeping weddings close to home is helpful. Those with big back-yards or a park nearby can host the event at home or in a nearby park and reduce dependence on large reception halls that use up large amounts of energy to operate. A home wedding also gives couples the opportunity to shop around for locally produced, organic foods.

Keeping itKeeping it

Green

Page 32: South Bridal 2011

3. Shop for floral alternatives. Flowers would seem “green” in themselves. However, many blooms available at florist shops are grown in hothouses with the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, something that is not very good for the environment at all. Brides opting for something more eco-conscious could consider alternative op-tions, such as bouquets made of sustainable suc-culent plants and centerpieces full of organic fruits and wildflowers.

4. Choose an open registry. Instead of fine china that may never be used, many couples are opt-ing for open registries that enable guests to gift everything from eco-friendly housewares to charitable donations to cash for down payments on a home.

5. Opt for mixed seating arrangements: Instead of formal escort cards indicating firm seating ar-rangements, couples are saving paper by allowing guests to choose their own seats from mix-matched options, such as long, communal benches and comfy sofas.

6. Go with something old. Re-cycled gowns and gently used items are good alternatives for eco-conscious brides. Many web sites will match up brides with others looking to swap items at low or no cost.

7. Skip the paper. Though etiquette experts frown on abandoning paper invitations for electronic ones, many couples are doing just that. For those who still prefer paper, print invitations on recycled paper. Reduce other wedding stationery needs by posting information on a wedding web site shared with family and friends.

8. Go small scale. Instead of inviting every last cousin and distant uncle, couples are opting for more intimate affairs, including only the people they are closest to, which saves on cost and helps the environment.

9. Trim some of the wedding day fat. Some couples opt for an all-you-can-eat buffet and then a subse-quent dessert bar later on in the

evening. Stuffed guests may end up wasting more food than eating it. Instead of all-you-can, go for a more traditional meal.

10. Choose a charitable party favor. Instead of a party favor that collects dust on a shelf, couples are choosing to gift with organic products or a donation to a charitable organization in the guests’ names.

The Second TimeThe Second TimeWardrobe options for second-time brides

Remarriage rates continue to increase, and many vendors are now catering specifi cally to couples entering second marriages. A bride getting married for

the second or third time has just as many attire op-tions as she did for her fi rst wedding.

Research indicates that more than half of all marriages end in divorce. The silver lining to that cloud is that 54 percent of divorced women remarry within 5 years, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

When choosing a gown for a second wedding, brides-to-be can use their discretion. Gone is the stigma of wearing white. However, brides still may want to choose an alternative color to bright white

to be more complementary to their skin tones. Off-white, pale yellow and pale pink can be fl attering shades. If second brides do choose to wear white, they may want to avoid a fl at white color. Instead, they can opt to wear a shimmery shade of white and a gown with a little more pizzazz.

The gown -- just as with fi rst-time weddings -- should be as formal or as casual as the wedding itself. At afternoon weddings it may be acceptable to wear a tea-length gown or even a cocktail dress. Enhance beachside or casual affairs with less elabo-rate gowns. Formal second weddings should still feature a gown that is formal in nature.

A more mature bride may feel more comfortable wearing a well-tailored pantsuit rather than a gown. Again, the choice is up to the bride regarding what she wants to wear.

TheTheHoneymoon

With all the work that goes into planning a wedding, it can be easy for couples to overlook their own honeymoons. But in the middle

of all those seating arrangements and reception hall negotiations, couples also need to plan and look forward to the rest and relaxation that awaits, which will no doubt be a well-deserved escape once the wedding has come and gone.Couples can take the following advice to ensure their getaway goes off without a hitch.

■ Be budget-conscious. Many couples could enjoy a honeymoon to Siberia in the dead of winter after their big day has passed. After all the stress of planning and paying for the wedding, couples will likely just enjoy the time away. Take this into con-sideration when planning a honeymoon. If a dream trip isnÕ t in the budget after all the wedding bills

have come due, donÕ t fret. A less expensive getaway is still a getaway, and couples will enjoy their well-deserved break no matter where it is theyÕ re putting their feet up.

■ Plan an off-season honeymoon. That dream honeymoon might be affordable after all if couples can wait till itÕ s not the height of tourist season. Most weddings occur during the summer months, when tourist season is in full swing.

■ Research where youÕ ll be staying. Oftentimes, hotels offer luxury at a very high price. Particularly in locales where many couples spend their honey-moon, such accommodations can be quite costly. However, savvy couples might be able to circum-vent costly hotel accommodations if they do their research early. Bed and breakfasts (B&B), for ex-ample, often range from practical to ultra-luxurious,

...Turn to the next page to read more

Page 38: South Bridal 2011

38 • Wedding Planner 2011

and tend to cost a fraction of what luxury hotels charge. Many couples actually prefer B&Bs, feeling theyÕ re more charm-ing and cozy.

One thing to be diligent about with respect to B&Bs is the size of the ac-commodations, most notably the bed-ding. Not all B&Bs provide king or even queen-size bedding, and some might not provide private bathrooms. Be sure to confirm with the B&B as to each room’s accommodations before making a reser-vation.

n Couples who can put off their honeymoon until the off-season will no doubt find their dream honeymoon is much more affordable.

n Start early. ItÕ s never too early to start planning the honeymoon. The earlier couples begin to research pos-sible destinations, the better feel they will have for what they can and canÕ t afford. Research can be done well in advance to give couples an idea of what their dream trip will cost. But don’t book any flights or make any reservations too far in ad-vance. The best deals are often available a few months before the trip.

n Spread the news that youÕ re new-lyweds. Hotels love hosting newlyweds, and many will upgrade rooms for recent-ly married guests. Couples should not be too brash about it, as fully booked hotels wonÕ t be able to upgrade their guests. But let the hotel know youÕ re on your honey-moon when checking in, and they might just upgrade your room and comp you a bottle of champagne as a gift.

n Think outside the box. When asked about a dream honeymoon, couples will often bring up Hawaii or even Paris. While those are beautiful places to spend a honeymoon, theyÕ re also expensive. Fortunately, there are a bevy of locales, be it domestic or international, that arenÕ t nearly as pricey as the most popular honeymoon destinations but still make wonderful options for a honeymoon get-away couples wonÕ t soon forget.

There are many traditions for weddings that can be traced back thousands of years to early civilization. One enduring tradition is to throw rice at the newly betrothed. For the safety of birds and

other animal life, rice has been switched to birdseed in recent times.

Some wedding traditions are based on very real needs of ancient times. Others are based on super-stitions or existing etiquette at the time they were initially practiced. Throwing rice remains a timeless tradition that many couples still enjoy.

Everyone attending the wedding gets to participate in throwing rice, or whatever is being used in lieu of rice, be it birdseed, confetti or even bubbles. Couples can even borrow from traditions in other countries. In France, people throw wheat, a symbol of bounty, after

the ceremony. Italians toss candy and sugared nuts over couples, for sweetness in marriage.

Rice was traditionally used to symbolize fertility and prosperity. Wheat was also very much used in an-cient wedding ceremonies for the same reasons. When guests threw rice at the bride and groom at a wedding, they were symbolically wishing them a lifetime full of children and good fortune. Some cultures even ate a meal of rice before the wedding to guarantee further prosperity. Rice and wheat were also thought to repre-sent virginity and wholesomeness by some. A virginal bride used to wear white and carried a stalk of wheat. Single women rushed after the bride hoping to get a few pieces of rice so they would be the next person to walk down the aisle.

Despite its foundation in superstition, throwing rice has remained a staple of weddings today.
