Executive summary
Welcome to the Deloitte South Australian Stock Exchange Quarterly Index (Deloitte SA Index) for 30 June 2016.
The Deloitte SA Index is a quarterly review of South Australian stocks. It is compiled from publicly available information provided by the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The Deloitte SA Index is based on the market capitalisation weighted share price performance of South Australian listed companies. The impact of dividends and capital returns are excluded from the Index, which currently comprises 64 companies.
The Deloitte SA Index has increased by 4.5% over the last 12 months, a significant outperformance of the S&P/ASX 200, which decreased by 4.1% over the same period.
The Deloitte SA Index increased by 3.5% in the 2016 June quarter similar to a 3.0% increase in the S&P/ASX 200. Both indices displayed moderate growth in April and May but fell in June on the back of uncertainties from global events. The absolute total market capitalisation of the state’s 64 listed companies increased by $1.73 billion (7.5%) during the June quarter, from $23.06 billion to $24.79 billion.
Throughout the 12 months to 30 June 2016, a number of South Australian listed companies have entered and exited the Deloitte SA Index via reverse takeover. The trend is underpinned by sustained declines in global resource markets that have resulted in reduced mining investment and prompted a tilting of capital to momentum sectors such as food, healthcare and technology.
We anticipate reverse takeovers (RTOs) will continue to be a viable option for aspiring ASX companies, as the relevant pools of capital continue to provide strong valuation support for companies exposed to Australia’s next waves of growth, namely agribusiness, tourism and international education.
It’s expected that changes in South Australia’s current economic composition will reflect the state’s relative competitive advantage in the next and future waves of growth, offsetting declines in manufacturing and providing an environment for which innovative South Australian companies can attract capital for expansion.
Quarterly movementsThe Deloitte SA Index increased 3.5% during the June quarter, compared to a 3.0% increase for the S&P/ASX 200 over the same period.
Six-month movementsThe Deloitte SA Index increased by 2.3% during the six months to 30 June 2016, compared to a 1.2% decrease for the S&P/ASX 200 over the same period.
Twelve-month movementsThe Deloitte SA Index increased by 4.5% over the 12 months to 30 June 2016, compared to a 4.1% decrease for the S&P/ASX 200 over the same period.

Compilation of the Deloitte SA IndexCompilation of the Deloitte SA Index The quarterly Deloitte SA Index is compiled from publicly available information provided by the ASX on the share prices and market capitalisation of each South Australian listed company.
A company is included on the Deloitte SA Index if its registered office is in South Australia. Dual-listed companies are not included in the Deloitte SA Index. The information on South Australian listed companies is extracted to provide a market capitalisation weighted share price index for all South Australian companies broadly in line with the methodology adopted for the compilation of the S&P/ASX 200 Index. The impact of dividends and capital returns has been excluded from the Deloitte SA Index.
The base period of the Deloitte SA Index is 30 June 2005, and for the purposes of the Index this month is given a notional value of one. Please note, if a company has been delisted during a particular period, no data will be included for that month and all subsequent months until the company is relisted. Historical information regarding the company will continue to be included in the calculation of the Deloitte SA Index.
