Losing only 2 games over the 17 games during the minor round has us in good form despite the long term injuries to Adam Grantham , club captain, Simon Brusnahan, Corey Finlay and Ben Kitchen , the club has met all challenges so far and the Juniors have stepped up when required. The club wishes them all the best in the next 3 weeks, we would love to see as many Southies at the games as possible to support them. The B Grade played their last game and despite only winning 1 game for the season can take some positives from the season with many juniors being blooded and performing consistently, much work will need to be done over the break to make the team competitive in 2011. The Under 18s have also had a great season after finishing out of the finals last year and are in second spot, much will depend on what players are required for the A Grade as to their chances at the premiership. If you wish to part of the Football Committee in 2011 and have a say in how the football operations are conducted give your name to Darren Baker Football Operations Chairperson by the end of the season. Congratulations to Ryan Struck , the 2010 Madigan Medallist after an excellent season , others to do well also included Brett Jones 3 rd , Adam Grantham and Brock Laube. Congratulations also to Clayton Struck who finished in the top 3 of the under 18s medal and won the Port Augusta Medal for the best under 18s from the town. Milestones for last month were Michael Curley 100 SGL League games and Daniel Dohnt for 100 SGL League games and 100 club games, well done lads. The boys have done an excellent job of fundraising for the Footy trip to Broken Hill In October, see Andrew Reynolds if you are keen to get involved in the first trip for over 10 years. Management Committee Report

Well done to the organisers of the Golf day with nearly 40 players attending on the day including past players Peter Groves and Alan Campbell who travelled from Adelaide to participate. Unfortunately they were not successful as the team captained by Daniel Dohnt and also including players such as Simon Brusnahan, Daniel Brusnahan, Brodie Cox had a day out finishing 2 under the card. Despite the doubters who questioned their score apparently Brodie Cox is a bit of a gun and his handicap will be assessed next year. Daniel and his team got to wear the red jacket, Todd Kernas the long drive with $400 being donated to the players trip.

The last Players Auction fundraising was a record with the total pool being $5,600 and the club receiving 50% of that for football operations, many thanks to Graeme Jones, the auctioneer and Harry Waterworth who did tireless work behind the scenes allocating voting slips, receiving and allocating money and chasing up money owed.

What a great night for past players and officials who made an effort to attend the Past players Reunion on Saturday 7th August. South Augusta Football Club hosted members of the 1960-1962 Seniors sides to commemorate 3 B Grade Premierships in a row and 50 years since the opening of the clubrooms in 1960. The highlight of the night was the attendance of the 1960 President Jim Brandle who travelled from Western Australia to attend the reunion. Jim who officially opened the club in 1960 with South stalwart Leo Nowak, presented the awards to current players and welcomed past and present players to the function.

Club treasurer Kym Austin turned 60 recently and is looking a little bit happier with good results both on and off the field with the footy and the shows . Kym is currently in Darwin to celebrate the milestone in a warmer climate, many thanks to his help with Whitey with supper at the Colts League voting last Monday with over 100 attending.

Through the Drinkwise project the South Augusta Football Club are educating its players by holding Alcohol awareness workshops starting with the Under 15’s. With funding received through Drinkwise Australia it is focused on promoting change towards a more responsible drinking culture in the club and town and it held its first forum with Dr Andy Kilcross presenting to over 50 younger players and parents.

Another 40 Senior players also attended a workshop in August which continued to promote the message and reflect the perspective of an abstinence approach to alcohol for minors. South Augusta also held an free family day in July which was well supported by both Under 9’s and under 11’s within the club.

LADIES COMMITTEE:After the Players Review the ladies committee has been laying relatively low!! I guess with girls tied up with netball commitments and Netball Finals looming it has been hard to find any spare time Wouldn’t it be wonderful if netball and football was altogether and not two separate identities! This idea has been talked about of late and the good old Port Augusta rumour mill has the South Augusta Netball Club up and running in 2011! I think it is important to point out that this is in fact rumour and there are no definite plans for a South Netball team in the near future; just an idea that has been talked about briefly!

Good luck to all involved in Netball Grand finals this week end and also to all junior SOUTHIES playing footy finals too Thanks to Kean, Couttsie and the Entertainment committee, the Sydney Hot Shots were a big hit for many ladies in the region. Thanks to Erin and Carah who made some Vodka Jellies to sell on the night (I believe we would have sold double the amount of Vodka Jellies if a couple of footballers offered to sell them dressed in just their football shorts like we suggested!!) The money raise from the sale of the jellies has been used to purchase lots of pom poms – ready for

the finals. Speaking of finals – we would like to get an idea of numbers for a Junior Cheer Squad. We need to know how many new skirts we may need to make sure no one misses out. So, if you are aged 13 or younger and you would like to be in the Junior Cheer Squad please add your name to the list on the notice board at the club. Please indicate if you have a skirt from a previous year or if you require a skirt – if you have one that may be too

small please note also!Congratulations to Ryan on his Madigan Medal win – he has had a fantastic season and let’s hope we can cap it off nicely for him! I must say he cut a dashing figure in his nice new players shirt!!

Sponsors report:

Jetset has been supporting South’s under 18’s for many many years and will continue to do so, and now they would like to offer the club a chance to receive more benefits from Jetset.

They have put in place “membership rewards” so for every member that purchases a holiday from us we will allot gift vouchers to the value of $10 per person for holidays up to the value of $1500 and $20 per person for holidays over this value, these will be collated on an annual basis 01JAN – 31DEC and presented to your club at the beginning of each season by way of Gift Vouchers.

These vouchers can be used at the discretion of the club, player rewards, raffles, whatever we want to make the most of this fantastic offer.

All our club members have to do is present their “valid” membership card to our consultants at the time of booking and Jetset will do the rest, to get the word out there we will also be back dating this offer to 01 January 2010 so if any of the members have purchased flights or holidays from Jetset call into the office with their card and they will locate their reservations and start building towards your bonus for 2011.

Any questions please contact Jetset , they see this as a great opportunity to put back into the clubs who’s members choose to support them. Locally owned since 1985 and proud to support our local community.

South Snippets

The A Grade did centrals a favour by defeating Sollies and enabling them to make the final four in what a vital game for Sollies It was great to see the team still perform even though the game result had no relevance to our standing on the table. I’m sure Centrals will repay the favour one day!

A recent survey of the unders 18s resulted in Robby miller asking if there could be a change of menu for the Saturday night teas after the game. Most of the time Beef Snitzels are the go becuse they are easy to cook for the Players teams, you shouldn’t be too exotic for the tired workers. Whitey agreed to the change in menu to Chicken Snitzels on 1 night , unfortunately it was the same night Robs team had a show to go to, better luck next time Rob and happy birthday for your 18th.

Great to see the Table Tennis competition at Touths have at least 12 new players that are based at the Port Augusta Housing Immigration centre, they have really added to the competition and have some talent, although we need interpreters to work out what their swear words are after missing shots!

2000’s quiz: 2 members of the 2000 premiership team were mentioned in the Trans recently in the Flashbacks section for winning a B Grade premiership in Touch football, the Trans must have been short on stories that Day!!. Who were those players and should they have stuck to that sport as their main recreational pursuit instead of football? Get the right answers to Harry Waterworth and you could win the prize of a dinner for 2 cooked by Billy Baker.

Great to see Derek Edmead becoming a Vice President member in 2010. Derek who played in the 1981 and 1983 Premierships was a damaging forward and very accurate kick. The ex player is now based in Western Australia and is Area manager for Port Hedland Operations, Laing O'Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd.

Great to see a few of the old timers supporting the B Grade in their time of need including Lee Willcock 1993/94 premiership player and Craig Ritter who played his 50th game for the club after 23 years.

The Long range tips has been won by the Bulldog Deadheads, a team comprising Peter Huxtable and Billy Baker, say no more. The team of 10 collected around $2150 between them and once again the tips was an excellent fundraiser for the club.

Long serving South officials Harold Bowman ( now deceased) and Jeff Shillabeer will be inducted into the Port Augusta Hall of Fame on Monday 6th September. Both put in many years doing the various roles around the club during the 70’s and 80’s and fully deserve the recognition. Tickets are available at the bar for $15 for 3 course meal.
