On behalf of SantaRita Estates, I am delighted to welcomeyou to our second annual South AmericanWine Workshop.Today’s event builds onlast year’s tastings andlectures by reflecting a

real commitment from the wider team atSanta Rita Estates to adding value to thewine industry. With this commitment inmind we have prepared an educationalprogramme designed to highlight the versatility of South American wines, with a special focus on the coastal climatewines of Chile and the influence played by the truly exciting terroir of Gualtallaryin Argentina.

I am thrilled that we are joined again thisyear by Mr Brian Croser who has travelledfrom Australia especially to attend today’ssession. In addition, Mr Patricio Tapia isattending the workshops for the first time.Patricio is one of Latin America’s most respected and widely read wine journalistsand will bring real insight into the innovation being shown by South American winegrowers. The combinationof Patricio and Brian offers a real

opportunity for everyone attending to gain an independent, global perspective on the wines we will be tasting today. Ourworkshops will also see contributions fromTim Atkin MW, Peter Richards MW and anumber of colleagues from the Santa RitaEstates viticulture, winemaking and sustainability teams.

Andrés Ilabaca - Technical Director of Wine, Santa Rita Estates

Andrés studied oenology at the School of Agronomy, Universidad de Chile. He spentten years as winemaker at José Cánepa before joining Santa Rita Estates in 1996 and isnow technical director of wine for Santa Rita. Andrés has completed harvests withAustralian winemakers at Domaine de Coussergues along with extensive wine education trips to Australia, New Zealand, USA, Italy and France.

Brian Croser - Consultant, Santa Rita Estates

Brian has a world-class reputation as a trailblazer on the global wine stage. Educated atthe University of Adelaide and at the University of California at Davis, Brian has beenan innovator in the Australian fine wine industry for over 35 years and is frequently referred to as “terroirist” for his core philosophy of meticulously matching grape varieties to specific vineyard sites. Accolades to date include Officer of the Order ofAustralia, President of the Winemakers Federation of Australia, Chairman of Adelaide, Sydney and Canberra wine shows, Maurice O’Shea award, an HonoraryDoctorate from Charles Stuart University, Doctor of the University of Adelaide and Decanter magazine Man of the Year in 2004.

Edgardo Del Pópolo - Consultant, Doña Paula

Edgardo studied oenology and agronomy, specializing in viticulture at the UniversidadNacional de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. Born into a family with European roots(Italian - French - Spanish - German heritage) viticulture is very much in his blood. He joined Doña Paula in 1998 as Head Viticulturalist and Operations Manager and isconsidered one of the most respected viticulturalists in the Argentine wine industry.

Elena Carretero - Director of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, Santa Rita Estates

Originally from Spain, Elena studied Economics in Madrid and Belgium before moving toChile. Elena worked with the Chilean Negotiation Team for Free Trade Agreements, theWorld Wine Trade Group and the Santiago Chamber of Commerce before moving into thefield of Sustainability working directly with Viñas de Chile, the Catholic University andUniversity of Concepción. One Elena’s most significant achievements was the developmentof the Sustainability programme for the Chilean wine industry which formed a templatefor Sustainable business throughout the whole of Chile. Elena joined Santa Rita Estates inSeptember 2011 as Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability.

Martín Kaiser - Head of Viticulture, Doña Paula

Born in Mendoza, Martin has a Degree in Agronomy from the National University ofCuyo and a Masters in Viticulture and Oenology École Nationale Supérieure Agronomiquede Montpellier, France. Prior to joining Doña Paula in 2006 Martin spent time as a vineyard manager and consultant in both Argentina and Paraguay where he developed new areas of cultivation and also worked as a researcher and teacher at the National University of Cuyo.

Patricio Tapia - Journalist, author & presenter

Patricio has a degree in journalism from the Universidad de Chile in Santiago, and adiploma in tasting and winemaking from Bordeaux University. Patricio has written severalbooks, including his annual Descorchados, a Chilean wine guide; The Wines of ColchaguaValley; TodoVino; and Wines for Great Occasions as well as being South American correspondent for The Oxford Companion to Wine, The World Atlas of Wine and OzClarke's Pocket Wine Book. Patricio is also a host on the El Gourmet channel in SouthAmerica as well as a critic for the wines of Argentina, Chile and Spain regularly contributes articles on these regions at Wine & Spirits Magazine.

Peter Richards MW - Journalist, author & presenter

Peter is a writer, broadcaster and Master of Wine. TV and radio credits include Saturday Kitchen, Taste, Great Food Live as well as BBC Radio 4 and Radio Fivelive. As author of ‘The Wines of Chile’ Peter is very much an authority on SouthAmerican wines. He and his partner Susie Barrie MW run the Winchester WineSchool and were jointly awarded the IWSC Communicators of the Year award in 2010.

Sebastián Labbé - Head winemaker, Carmen

Sebastian has travelled the world on his winemaking quest. He gained a degree in viticulture and oenology from Lincoln University, New Zealand before heading toTyrell’s in Australia finally joining the Santa Rita Estates team in 2005. Sebastian isnow chief winemaker at Chile’s oldest surviving winery, Carmen.

Tim Atkin MW - Journalist, author & presenter

Tim is an award winning wine writer and Master of Wine. He writes for a number of publications including Off Licence News, The World of Fine Wine, The Economist and is the wine columnist for Woman and Home. He regularly appears on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen, is co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge and runs a popular wine school at Vinoteca in London. Tim has won over 20 awards for his journalism to date.
