Dear colleagues The health of children in a society is an important barometer of the society's health in general. South Africa's under 5 infant mortality rate has remained disappoinngly high. Health care praconers and government face many obstacles (connued )and challenges that impact on children's health. To meet these challenges, South Africa is blessed with a wealth of paediatric experts and internaonally acclaimed researchers who are at the forefront of innovave and important advances in paediatric medicine. It is thus a great pleasure to invite you, on behalf of the South African Paediatric Associaon (SAPA) and UCT's Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, to the biennial SAPA Congress in Cape Town, 10‐14 September 2014. The programme promises to be excing and topical, reflecng the diversity of paediatric pracse across South Africa in different sengs. In addion to a wide range of general paediatric and child health topics, speciality areas of interest will include neonatalology, haematology/ oncology, neurology and neurodevelopment, paediatric surgery, cardiology, infecous diseases, pulmonology and emergency/ crical care medicine. Please join our local and internaonal experts for this excing event. We look forward to meeng you in Cape Town in 2014! Sincerely

I look forward to meeng you in Cape Town in September 2014 at the Joint Biennial Congress of the South African Paediatric Associaon and the South African Associaon of Paediatric Surgeons.

With speakers and delegates joining us from Africa and across the world, we ancipate that the Congress will provide lively and smulang discussions as we interact with each other and with many world leaders in their field.

Workshops in Minimally Invasive Paediatric Surgery and Paediatric Colorectal Surgery led by an internaonal as well as local faculty will take place immediately before and aer the Congress.

We are parcularly pleased to be sharing the congress with our Paediatric colleagues as this will once again allow us to have wide ranging discussions when we meet in plenary sessions on subjects of mutual interest.

The close proximity of Table Mountain, the Victoria and Albert Waterfront and the Cape Winelands to the congress venue at the Cape Town Internaonal Congress Centre and to the congress hotels will allow us and those accompanying us to enjoy much that the Cape has to offer.

The Congress promises to be a very good event. I hope you will be able to join us.
