Dr H Jantzen – Group Commercial Director

Brian’s career in mining started with JCI which, combined with his entrepreneurial flair, saw him become the founding member and current CEO of MetGroup. Brian was part of a team heading up one of the first trackless mining projects in the country.

His skills and knowledge specialised in shaft sinking and tunnelling. Brian furthered his studies at WITS University in the Business faculty in order to enhance his 30 year business career.

Over time he saw the need and demand for a specialised drill rig to be incorporated in the shaft sinking process, hence he went on to successfully develop and patent one of the world largest drill rigs (MetRig) which is currently

used by several mining companies both locally and internationally.

Wynand started his mining career with Anglo American Shaft Sinking Division at Western Deep Levels, Shaft 1 in 1987. This led him to progressing to a Master Sinker and Site Manager at Shaft Sinkers

where he was involved in some of the world’s largest and deepest projects. Wynand was part of a team of three who were the first ever to develop Anglo American 190m single face development

with the conventional handheld drilling and blasting method. He has 22 years Shaft Sinking and Construction experience and for 30 years has served the community through social

enhancement projects.

Wynand was involved in the first ever vertical sinking shaft in South Africa which removed the shaft pillar during the sinking phase, integrating with highly technical shaft

equipping. He has secured global experience in Hydro Power projects and Shaft Sinking, Equipping and Consulting, to name a few. Wynand is a shareholder and active Director of MetGroup.

Hein has 36 years’ experience in the mining and the metal industries as a Senior Manager and executive for AngloGold, Murray & Roberts (RUC), AngloGold Ashanti, Anglo American Platinum and Shaft Sinkers Plc. His responsibilities span operations, construction, contracting mega capital projects and international business. He has held a host of senior operational and corporate positions at executive level local and off-shore.

Hein is a P.Eng and Pr.CPM, holding a BSc.Eng. (Mech), BBA, MBA and DBA degrees. In addition he has successfully completed all executive programmes including AMP through the Gordon Institute and the Leadership and Social Responsibility Programme through Cambridge University and Queensland University.

MetMining specializes in providing full contract mining services to its clients, inclusive of mining consulting, geological drilling, and rehabilitation planning. MetMining embraces an open book and participative approach, and as such, its preferred contract type is agreed target costing in which MetMining, together with client, calculates all relevant costs for mutual acceptance,

However, should the client prefer alternative contract types, this will be accommodated.

MetalWay was formed to provide a specialist service to both the mining and construction industries by pioneering the design, fabrication and installation of one-of-a-kind and intricate steel structures.

Through leveraging its expert resources, MetalWay manufactures the MetGroup patents such as a vertical shaft drill rig, the MetRig. The growth of the company is due to being strategically geared towards supplying the ordered fabricated equipment on time every time, never sacrificing on safety and quality.

20 years experience in design and manufacturing in steelwork relating to the mining and construction industries.

Being involved in engineering, sinking and mining since 1971, Tjaart is a qualified Electrical Engineer and has mastered all aspects of engineering in shaft design, sinking, repairs, and equipping as well as trackless mining, high speed development, electrical reticulation and electrical distribution networks (66kv and below). This experience spans headgear engineering construction, shaft loading bins, surface and underground conveyor belts, winders, shaft operations, compressors, ventilation fans as well as expertise in general mine operations.

Tjaart’s responsibilities have included control and management of shaft sinking – both locally and abroad, managing profitability, cash flow contract operations, commercial agreements and contract negotiation, tender processes, customer relations, contractual claims, designs, design layouts and mine health and safety.

Associated Transformer Manufacturing (ATM) established in 1996 is now proudly a MetGroup company. The new MetATM has manufactured transformers for local and international markets.

MetATM provides products and services to the electrical engineering industry. These products range from the manufacturing of distribution transformers up to 10MVA, power transformers up to 15MVA, with voltage ranges up to 33 000 Volts. MetATM also manufactures dry type transformers up to 2500kVA and inductors to client specifications. The refurbishment of transformers which include the redesign of existing transformers as well as on site servicing with oil purification and oil analysis form part of our extended customer after sale service.

Together the MetGroups “one-stop-shop” solution for infrastructure development and Associated Transformer Manufacturing’s track record of manufacturing world-class transformers, the newly established MetATM will continue to manufacture and provide first class transformers to the market.

After completing his high school career Schalk started as an apprentice armature winder. During his training he was called for National Service in the Navy between 1973 and 1974. Due to his interests in electronics he soon found himself in the Navy electrical workshop where he worked on radar power supply systems, DC motors, transformers etc.

After his National service he attended classes at the Cape Town Technicon which included principals of electricity, electronics and radio technical designs. Once he qualified in 1978, he started his own company, Central Armature winders, which specialised in repairs of AC & DC motors and variable speed systems. By 1989 his interests in transformers had grown and Schalk started Central Power Transformers. By 1999, Associated Transformer Manufacturing (ATM) was founded. We excelled in our field as a company with fast, efficient and reliable delivery of transformers and mini substation. We also manufacture main distribution boards and install HV & LV networks. All designs and execution of contracts are done under his highly experienced supervision and with 40 years of experience in the industry, results in almost zero failures on site.

As the founding company, Metanoya specializes in the fields of project management, engineering, design and consulting.

It has pioneered and patented designs such as the MetLight and MetRig, which have opened new dimensions to the mining industry worldwide.

Pat Mitchell

Pat started his mining career with Rand Mines in 1972 as a Learner Official. During this period he obtained the Mine Overseers Certificate, Certificate in Rock Mechanics, Managers Certificate and National Diploma for Technicians (Metalliferous Mining). He progressed through the ranks to General Manager. In 2003 Pat started work in the consulting field and has been working on project studies and includes the execution of mining projects. He took on the role of the client’s representative as Production Manager on behalf of Anglo Platinum at Twickenham Platinum Mine. Twickenham is a Greenfields project in execution.

Pat has a lot to offer now in the design aspects due to the operational experience and aspects of mine management.

While studying abroad, Jonathan started his career and studies in Business, Management and Development, working his way up the rungs in the communications

industry. After five years of corporate management experience and operating several business ventures, Jonathan followed his business drive and became involved in

the development, management and operational aspects of the now MetGroup. Following his involvement in various housing projects, he now takes a lead role in MetBCE and managing several of its operations.

While obtaining his Business Management Degree, Brian was highly involved at management level of large commercial structures. After working his way up the corporate ladder, his entrepreneurial flair for business expanded into the family operation. Over the past six years Brian has been fully active and hands-on in MetGroup’s mining and construction projects, with this ambit now expanding and taking a lead role in MetBCE.

Deon H Pinard - Director

Gavin has been involved in civil engineering since 1973, with 13 years’ service at Transnet railways and harbours; he handled heavy duty pavement design. During his 14 years at the

Geotechnical Office, Gavin dealt with municipal employment in geometric engineering and storm water management while reaching the position of Executive Officer of the

WMLC of the City of Johannesburg. Gavin obtained a Masters Diploma in Engineering in 1986 and is a registered professional according to LCSA and a member of SAICE

and IMESA.

Deon has been involved in civil engineering since 1982, with seven years’ experience in municipal employment, specialising in road and storm water design. He spent five years at Allyson Lawless and Knowledge Base- design software development and supply. Throughout his 11 years in engineering consulting Deon has been a partner of MetConsult business (previously Kunene) since 2005. Deon is a registered professional with a BTech(Trans) degree and is a member of IMESA and SAICE.
