Medicine ‘ATMs’ Introduced in South Africa

o In partnership with BBD, Right ePharmacy have introduced Portable

Dispensing Units (PDUs) for medicines in South Africa, where individuals

can go and collect their prescription medication without needing to visit a

pharmacy.

o PDU’s work exactly like an ATM for the dispensing of medication. The

units make use of a Skype-like virtual communication interaction between

patient and tele-pharmacists, enabled by cloud-based software and

technology, to provide and label medication.

o In order to make use of the unit, patients scan their ID book, ID card or

pharmacy card and enter a pin. Patients then talk to a remote pharmacist

and select the needed items. The medicine is then robotically dispensed,

labelled and dropped into the collection slot. As part of the system,

consumers are also notified via SMS when their medication is ready for

collection.

o With the ease of access offered by these units, the demand for PDUs are

growing. Right ePharmacy has already implemented five sites and 18

PDUs in Soweto, Diepsloot, Alexandra, and Bloemfontein. In addition,

BBD and Right ePharmacy indicated they were planning on releasing 400

Collect and Go Smart locker units at 67 pick-up points, within six months.

o This technology is specifically designed to relieve pressure on the public

health system and increase access of medicine to remote and rural areas.

o At present, these units can only be used to collect chronic medication for

certain conditions, but the founders of the units stated that it could be

expanded to include over-the-counter (OTC) medicines. This could

potentially present an opportunity in the future for the Cough, Cold and Flu

Remedies market in South Africa.

Local COVID-19 Outbreak Drives the Market

o As of 14 April 2020, the number of cases of COVID-19 in South Africa had

risen to 2,272 within weeks of the initial outbreak, with the first case

reported in the country on 5 March 2020. Awareness regarding COVID-19

amongst consumers is resulting in increased sales of Cough, Cold and Flu

Remedies as people attempt to prepare for the spread of the virus locally.

o Despite South Africa having relatively fewer cases of COVID-19 when

compared to other countries that have been severely affected, the virus

has spread rapidly throughout the country with cases being reported in all

nine provinces.

o The spread along with increases in deaths within the country has led to

President Cyril Ramaphosa implementing a country wide lockdown, which

came into effect at midnight 26 March 2020 and has since been extended

by two weeks until the end of April 2020. This includes all non-essential

services not permitted to operate in the country.

o As a result of growing concerns amongst consumers regarding the spread

of COVID-19, there have been increased instances of panic buying,

whereby consumers attempt to stockpile essential items in order to

prepare for a more extensive spread of the virus.

o This has extended to Cough, Cold and Flu Remedies, with consumers

purchasing large quantities of these products, for the purposes of

attempting to prevent themselves from becoming infected as well as being

able to treat the symptoms, should they become infected.

o As an illustration of how the COVD-19 spread is fueling the market, Aspen

Pharmacare, a major pharmaceutical company, indicated that they would

be increasing production of OTC pain, respiratory, as well as cold and flu

medicines due to stock depletion as a result of panic buying.

o More specifically, the company indicated that orders for their respiratory

products as well as the cold and flu treatment, Flusin, have increased

significantly following the outbreak, with daily orders of some medicines

reaching the equivalent of 20% of a month’s orders.

o Further driving the purchasing of these products in large quantities by

consumers, was the announcement by India that the country would be

banning the export of 26 pharmaceutical ingredients, including

paracetamol. This contributed significantly to the stockpiling of OTC and
