Its not just about recycling!Just about everyoneknowsabout recycling. But saving theenvironment isnt just aboutrecycling.

Its also about creatively keepinguseul objects out o the landfill! When you look at a used object, what do you see? Do you see theobject as it is or as it could be? With a little creativity, evensomething as plain as a wooden

pallet can serve a new purpose andstay out o the landfill. Wooden pallets are just abouteverywhere. We see them holdingboxes or used on orklifs. Pallets can be turned intoshoe stands, beds, or even a unbackyard clubhouse or the kids! Even used potato chip bags canbe restyled into a trendy purse. Have you lost one earring roma pair o pierced earrings? Use theextra earring as a push-pin to holda note or photo on a cork-board. With a little creativity and somework, almost anything can beturned into something o use.

Alluring Ladybugs By Angela Quayle, Horticulturist Everyone whos anyone lovesladybugs. With good reason, I say!

Ladybugs are natural predatorso pesky insects in your garden, namely aphids. Tey will also eatmealy bug and scale.

Encouraging ladybugs to bepresent in your garden is easy.

Plant flowers that attract ladybugslike sweet alyssum, cosmos, calendula, cilantroand dill.

Have wateravailable to ladybugs.Cup-shaped flowersand plants with largeleaves that catchdew are great orladybugs.

Avoid usingpesticides. Tats right! Quitspraying poison all over the place!

    Even when you are targeting

a pest with a pesticide, you aremessing with the ecosystem oyour garden. When you eliminatea predators ood, the predator isgoing elsewhere to eat. No aphidsequals no ladybugs.

I you find that you have anaphid population, chances are thatthere are ladybugs present in yourgarden keeping that population incheck.

I it seems the aphid populationis really high, buy some ladybugsand release them into your garden.

Yes, some will fly away. Butmany will stick around to devouraphids and lay eggs in the process.Ladybug larvae are voracious aphideaters.

Make sure you know whatladybug larvae look like so youdont accidently rid your gardeno them. Tey are kind o strange-

looking and i you dont knowwhat they are, youll wonder what

kind o crocodile caterpillaris in your garden.

Now that you have thedown-low on ladybugs, getout there and make sureyour garden is ladybugriendly! Ladybugs are availableat Te Backyard Gardensand Gifs early spring

through all. Stop by and pick up acontainer so you can help MotherNature keep a handle on those

    aphids.While youre at Te Backyard,

pick up a copy o Te BackyardBuzz. Its a seasonal newsletter ullo ino and a schedule o classesto help you learn how to gardenorganically and grow green. See you in Te Backyard!

Composting - its easy!Composting is an easy way or anyhousehold to manage waste andmake amazing organic ertilizer.

Its the most basic orm orecycling! Composting happens whenorganic matter decomposes.

Te actual composting is areaction between carbon, nitrogen,

and water. Its a very naturalprocess. Composting turnsorganic material into a dark, richsubstance. Tis substance, calledcompost or humus, is an amazingertilizer or your soil!

Tis substance makes your soileasier to work and less likely toerode. It also decreases soil run-off and promotes healthy rootsystems. Composting can help cut downon the amount o trash yourhousehold needs hauled awayAll o your yard waste (branches,

clippings, grass), most o your oodwaste, and even newspaper can allbe composted! echnically, anything that wasonce alive can be composted, butsome things should be compostedby proessionals (like dairyproducts, dog and cat eces, attyood, and diseased plants) becausethey can attract pests or spreaddisease. You can compost non-dairyand non-meat kitchen lefoversyoursel without proessional help.

Begin a compost pile by buying acompost bin (Lowes in St. Georgesells a great tumbling composteror about $90).

You can also build your owncompost bin, but buying a bin ismuch easier and can be more cost-effective than building one. Afer your composting system

is set up, composting doesnt costany money. All you do to maintainyour compost is contributehousehold garbage! Make sure you put yourcomposting pile in a place thatreceives at least 6 hours o sunlighteach day.

Here are some common compostissues with simple solutions: Strong smell: Tis is a signalthat your compost needs moreair. urn the pile to increase aircirculation. I your pile is very wet,add some dry materials.

Pile is damp, but wontgenerate heat: Tis is a signal thatyour compost either needs morenitrogen or is too wet. Add grassclippings or ertilizer to increasenitrogen. I your pile is wet, adddry materials or allow the pile todry. Pile is dry and not composting:Just add water. Ammonia-like smell: Yourpile has too much nitrogen. Addsawdust or other substances highin carbon and turn the pile.

All about alternative energyLightbulbs that save you moneyHave you seenthe round, flat-ended lightbulbs or twisted, spiral-looking lightbulbs at the store?Tese strange little lightbulbs cansave you money! Round, flat-ended lightbulbsare called Light Emitting Diodes(LEDs). Tese lightbulbs can lastover 10 years and are unbreakable!

LED bulbs dont have a filament

inside like a normal lightbulb does.Instead, their light comes romthe movement o electronsinside the bulb.

LED bulbs producealmost no heat, so youcan saely use them inflammable environments.Tey also light up instantly, even in extreme cold! Unlike fluorescentbulbs, LED bulbs have nomercury in them, so youcan throw them right intothe garbage.

LED bulbs cost a littlemore than regular lightbulbs, butover time youll save up to 90%by buying LED bulbs instead oregular bulbs. Tis is because theyhardly ever need replacing and usemuch less energy than other bulbs. Te twisted, spiral-lookinglightbulbs are called CompactFluorescent Lights (CFLs). Whiletheyre less efficient than LEDbulbs, they save you energy andmoney compared to regularlightbulbs.

A CFL bulb doesnt have afilament either. A CFL bulbbecomes bright when a smallelectric current passes through itstubing, interacting with chemicalsinside the tube and its innercoating.

A CFL bulb is more expensivethan a regular lightbulb, but it uses2/3 less energy and lasts 10 times

longer. So, the CFL bulb is actuallysaving you 75% to 80% over the

cost o a regular lightbulb. CFL bulbs have a shortwarm-up period beorethey reach ull brightness, which is why they can looka little dim when you firstturn them on. CFLs are bestused in fixtures that are lefon or 15 minutes or morebecause turning them onand off requently shortensthe lie o the bulb. All CFL bulbs are not

alike. Some CFL bulbsarent suitable or dimmers, ans,3-way switches, or timers. Read thepackage when you buy a CFL soyou can be sure youre buying theright bulb or the right fixture. Because CFL bulbs contain asmall amount o mercury, thebulbs should be recycled. I abulb is broken, take extremecarecleaning it up! Learn more aboutCFL clean-up and disposal athttp://www.energystar.gov.

Alternative energyis a term thatlots o people use. But do youknow what it means? Alternative energy meansenergy that comes rom naturalsources.

Solar power, wind power, andethanol uel are all orms oalternative energy. Almost everyone pays a bill each

month or the electricity theirhousehold uses. I you dont likepaying or electricity, you can usealternative energy sources to makeyour own. With the right equipment, wind or the sun can power yourhome. Youll be able to loweryour electricity bill or eliminate itcompletely. I your alternative energy systemproduces more electricity thanyour household uses, the electriccompany may buy the extraelectricity you generate!

Tats right - instead o payingthe electric company, they may payyou. Wouldnt that be nice? You can even get a tax creditrom the ederal government orinstalling a wind turbine or solarenergy system at your home. One way to generate alternativeenergy is to install a wind turbineon your house.

A wind turbine looks a little likea windmill. Te turbine is mountedon the roo o your home.

    When the wind blows through

the turbine, the turbine rotates.Te rotation o the turbine createselectricity thats compatible withyour homes electrical system. Solar energy can be generatedtwo ways.

One way is by buying andinstalling a special solar-poweredwater heater. I your current waterheater is powered by natural gas,

a solar-powered water heater canalso lower your natural gas bill. Te most common way ogenerating solar energy is byinstalling solar panels on the rooo your home. When the sun shines on the solarpanels, the sunlight is converteddirectly into electricity. Its thatsimple! Te ederal government hastax credits specifically or peoplewho install wind turbines, solar-powered water heaters, or solarpanels on their home.

Installing alternative energysystems can be expensive, but themoney youll save over time canmore than pay or the equipment.

o learn about your alternativeenergy options, contact yourutility company. You can also callAlternative Power Systems, Inc. inCedar City at 435-586-9107.

Recycling made easy with Binnie!By Washington County Solid WasteRecycling Program Dont throw away your metalcans, paper, plastic, or glass!Recycle them with the WashingtonCounty Solid Waste RecyclingProgram! Te Recycling Program has 45Binnie (recycling bin) locationsin the Washington County area.

Proceeds rom recycling items goto the city or town the items wererecycled in. Residents o Washington Countyrecycled over 2.6 million poundso material and raised over $72,500dollars in the Binnie Program in2010! Heres what you canrecycle inBinnies: Paper: Newspaper, officepaper, junk mail, phone books, catalogues, magazines, cerealboxes, gray and white board boxes. Please bag shredded paper in a

grocery sack. Please dont put contaminatedpaper in Binnies. Make sure yourpaper is ree rom ood, drink, oil, paint, and grease. Plastic:Plastic bottles and

    containers with a logo (#1, #2,

#3, #4, #5, #6, or #7). Tis includessmall, narrow, and wide-mouthplastics. We also accept firm plasticlike grocery bags and newspapercovers. Please rinse out ood and drinkcontainers beore putting them ina Binnie. Lids on plastic containersare fine. Please compact all plasticbottles to save room in the Binnie.

Even businesses can go greeno the casual observer, it mayseem difficult or businesses to gogreen. But a business going greendoesnt have to be as hard as youmight think. Businesses can use less energy byweatherizing their acilities.

Tey can also use less energyand get rebates or tax credits

by installing energy-efficientappliances, including airconditioning, heating, and evenroofing. Businesses can also recycle paper, plastic, glass andmetal.

It doesnt matteri the recycledmaterial comes rommanuacturing ornot - just recyclingemployees lunchcontainers makes adifference.

Any electronics used bybusinesses should be recycled.oo many businesses throw usedelectronics in the trash. Teseelectronics then damage theenvironment.

Trowing away electronics canalso compromise the security andprivacy o a business - many usedelectronics still have extractabledata. Businesses can also donatereusable items to thrif stores. Tere are some businesses, o

course, that find it more difficult tobe environmentally riendly. How could a company that printsPVC banners and paper productsgo green? A local company has figured thatout. Steamroller Copies and Designto Print uses specialized inks andmaterials that help preserve the

environments ecological balance.Tey dont use products that

contaminate or deplete naturalresources. Every year, millions o vinyl

banners are thrownin the trash, wherethey take an averageo 500 to 700 yearsto degrade in ourlandfills.

Te people atSteamroller Copiesand Design toPrint know thats a

problem. So Steamroller Copies andDesign to Print prints their vinylbanners on a biodegradablematerial. When these banners are exposedto landfill conditions (darkness, high heat and moisture, lacko oxygen), the banners attractmicrobes that break the PVC downin just 3 to 5 years. With some creative thinking, anybusiness can do their part to helppreserve the environment.
