SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 6, November 8, 2012 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Hi, everyone. It is the time of the year when we begin to face some nasty weather. A storm may be approaching so I thought that it would be timely to share this information with you. On a stormy day, tune in to 880 CKLQ AM, 1220 CJRB AM, KX96 FM, HOT 101 FM, 94.7 STAR FM, or CBC to get updates on school closures. We notify these stations about the school closure immediately. As well, school closure information is placed on the school website as soon as possible. We may, in the future, also use our Synrevoice phone system to contact all families. Through consultation with the bus drivers, we attempt to make a decision to close the school by 6:30 AM. That is not always possible. On days of extreme cold, the Transportation Supervisor makes the decision to close for the entire division. On days when a snowstorm has hit or road conditions are poor the decision is more site-based due to the fact that conditions can differ dramatically from one area of the School Division to another. I know that these days can cause inconveniences but I ensure you that we will do our best to provide you with information in a timely manner. For your reference you can view the entire document on the divisional website at: www.shmb.ca Click on “Board Governance”, select “Policy Manual” from the drop down list and view: CBA Procedure – Student Transportation and Inclement Weather, and CBB Procedure - School Closure School reports and Parent/Teacher Conferences are just around the corner. I would like to remind everyone of the dates and times for these: Tuesday, November 20 th from 5 PM to 8 PM Wednesday, November 21 st from 4 PM to 6:30 PM For those parents wishing to speak to a teacher who is teaching your son or daughter a course from another school via video conference, please contact the office and we will make sure that your son’s or daughter’s teacher contacts you personally. Mr. Cwir is an Itinerant teacher. He will be available for interviews on Tuesday, November 20 th , only. I would like to thank the members of Student Council for their hard work these past few weeks on the Magazine Campaign. A fundraiser such as this allows us to bring in performers and guest speakers for our student body. On Wednesday, November 7 th , the entire school were treated to a performance by the acapela group, HOJA. The group entertained everyone with their energetic performance. I must also acknowledge the guest performer for the group, Mr. Cory Feschuk, who entertained the crowd with his strong vocals and superb dancing. Again, thank you, Student Council. HOJA were going to leave some posters and CD’s at the office, but forgot to do so. We contacted their office and have left an inquiry as to price and if they would send some out. If they can, we will let you know and find out how many we need and get them sent to Souris School. We will keep you posted. The Football team won a hard fought victory last Sunday afternoon against Swan Valley to send them to the League Final against Dauphin this Saturday, November 10 th at 2:00 PM at the school. Congratulations boys and good luck.

Also, congratulations to the Varsity Girls and Boys Volleyball teams who each earned the right to represent Zone 9 in Provincial playdowns by defeating Boissevain on Tuesday night. Both teams now head off to play their respective inter-zone match-ups tonight. Good luck to each team. I just received word from Pam Robbins that Souris had the highest percentage of youth teams take part in the last Relay for Life. Thank you for all the students who took part in this very worthy cause. Have a great week. PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE Tuesday, November 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 21st from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will be a slight change in the process at the Senior Years end. We have returned to a gr. 9-12 Homeroom format. Each Homeroom has approximately 15 students from gr. 9-12. You will be contacted to set up a Parent Teacher Conference with your child’s/children’s Homeroom Teacher. The focus of this conference is:

- to look over the Report in a general sense;

- to share and discuss the Learner Profile;

- to visit the Student Portal - go over course credits for

Graduation. These conferences will not involve academic discussions. Any concerns/questions relating to a specific course should be addressed with that particular teacher not to the Homeroom Teacher, unless of course, they are one and the same. A letter will be sent home, indicating each family’s scheduled time and date. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress. Middle Years Boys Volleyball Our Grade 7 & 8 Boys Volleyball season has officially come to an end. The boys traveled to Reston on Monday, November 5th, competing in the Zone Tournament. The boys played very well and placed third in their pool, ending the day in an extremely close game which found them short two points from continuing to the finals.

Page 3: Souris School Newsletter Nov. 8, 2012

Congratulations to an excellent season, boys! Also a huge “Thank You” to Mr. Bob Young who committed his time and experience in coaching the boys throughout the season. Your dedication to our Middle Years Volleyball Program was very much appreciated!

WE DAY 2012 Our grade 8 classes travelled by bus to the MTS Centre on October 30th for WE Day. WE Day is a celebration of social change that youth have made locally and globally in Manitoba. You can’t buy a ticket to WE Day, you must earn it! There are so many words to describe WE Day. It was touching, inspiring and breathtaking! There were many speakers and bands entertaining us. Here are a few who made a lasting impression. We listened to the founders of this great event Marc and Craig Kielburger tell us amazing stories of change and inform us of upcoming campaigns. We heard from speakers like Spencer West who climbed Mount Kilamanjaro last spring with only his hands! You see, Spencer lost his legs at a young age. His message of “Redefining Possible” campaign has helped to bring clean water to Africa, in which we were proud to be a part of last spring. Mikhail Gorbachev brought a message of peace and stories of a very different time when nuclear warfare was on many minds. Last but not least, Molly, a girl who spoke about bullying. She had been bullied all her life, and then at age 14 became blind. This newest Me to We speaker touched our hearts. Who knew waking up at 4:30 a.m. for this trip would be so worth it! Souris grade 8 classes past and present, Social Justice Fighters and Make Change classes have been joining forces for various causes. Most recently, we have facilitated

events such as Pennies for the Projector and Halloween for Hunger. We are working hard to do our part for social justice. We are ready to make change! We are ready to be the change! We would like to thank the Souris School Board for providing us with free busing to Winnipeg to be a part of this amazing event. For more information about WE Day and Free the Children please visit www.WE Day.com

Madison Dodds and Reagan Campbell of grade 8, were asked to be crowd pumpers at this year’s WE Day! This honor was given to them after they attended a Free the Children camp in Winnipeg this summer. anytime I am in the school during the daytime as well. Please email me at [email protected] for an appointment, or call me at (204) 483 - 2161 and leave a message. We have several students involved in either Career Technology Studies or Hugh School Apprenticeship, and we are always working on further learning opportunities for our students in Grades 11 and 12. HEAD LICE CHECK This will be an ongoing reminder throughout the year. We remind parents to check heads on Friday evening. This way, if treatment is necessary it can be done on the weekend and children can return to school Monday. This is intended as a preventative reminder. Thanks for your help with this. CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS “Thank You” goes out to the Post Secondary Institutions who presented at our Post Secondary Day held on Friday, November 2. We are very fortunate that they take the time to travel here and provide our students with information for educational choices. An effective tool available for career planning is CAREER CRUISING Manitoba’s Website for Career Exploration and Development. Students can do career researches, find out about careers and educational requirements. Check it out at www.careercruising.com Please see me for the username and password. As many of our Grade 12 students are now receiving their acceptance letters to post secondary institutions, the focus turns to scholarships and preparation. Information on program requirements, volunteering, spend a day programs, student loans, financial aid and deadlines are all necessary topics to consider. Stop in at the career center for more details.

SSPAC Update October 2012 SSPAC is looking for Room Representatives for some classrooms in Grades K-5. Room Reps act as a linkage between parents and teachers, and attend PAC meetings when possible. For example, the teacher may ask the Room Rep to call parents when volunteers or chaperones are needed. In addition, the PAC Secretary position is currently vacant. The position is responsible for taking and distributing meeting minutes and assisting with correspondence. Finally, SSPAC recently distributed a request for information. Anyone wishing to receive information by email or interested in volunteering, please return your form to the school or contact PAC.

VOLLEYBALL Varsity Boys

The boys had a stellar weekend on October 26th and 27th as they travelled to Brandon for the Neelin Dig tournament. The boys played well on Friday, finishing second in their pool. On Saturday, the boys beat teams from Gilbert Plains and Regina, then came up against a strong Elton team in the consolation semi final. In the best volleyball the team has played this season, Souris beat Elton in 3 sets to go to the final against Niverville. This game also went to 3 sets, but unfortunately the boys couldn’t pull out the win this time. Despite the loss, it was a great weekend overall. Good job boys. The Varsity Boys defeated Boissevain in three straight sets Tuesday night in their Zone 9 playoff game. The boys now head to Killarney on Thursday to play Pilot Mound in an Interzone game. The winner of this game

goes to Provincials. Best of Luck on Thursday boys.
