SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 13, March 1, 2013 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS I am so happy that the weather has remained so nice this past couple of weeks. It makes bus duty before and after school so much more enjoyable. I really appreciate all the positive interactions that occur with parents and students when I am out on duty. Congratulations must be extended to Mr. Cwir and our two Bands that attended the Optimist Festival in Winnipeg in last week. Once again, both Bands performed very well and both were invited to Nationals. This is quite an accomplishment for the young musicians. Way to represent Souris and Hartney schools. Thank you Mr. Cwir and all the chaperones. I would like to remind everyone that there are no classes next Friday, March 8th. This day is an Administration Day for teaching staff. Progress reports will be going out March 14th -15th with interviews set for: Tuesday, March 19th – 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, March 20th – 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM As well, there are no classes on Friday, March 22nd. This day is also an Administration Day for teaching staff. Mr. Cwir will be available for interviews on Wednesday, March 20th. We look forward to seeing you and discussing your child’s/children’s education. Lastly, I would like to remind all parents that student fees are past due. We would appreciate prompt payment for any outstanding accounts. Another reminder letter will be sent out from our office over

the next couple of weeks. If you require any special arrangements, please contact the office directly to set up a payment plan. Have a great weekend. GRADE 6 PARENTS Any parents planning on volunteering to chaperone for the grade 6 Circle Square Ranch Trip, June 13th, 14th will need to have Criminal Checks and Child Abuse Registry completed. Child Abuse Registry forms can be picked up at Souris School. Criminal Check forms can be picked up at your local RCMP office. Please begin this process soon as it takes time for it to be processed. Thank you,

•Ms. Keyes, Mr. Elder

HOOPS Varsity Girls The Varsity Girls Basketball Team began their Provincial qualifying series with Boissevain on Monday. The girls played great leading for most of the first half and into the third quarter. Some great defense kept the girls in the game, but their offense could not keep pace with the Broncos as they fell 50-38. Sarah Palson lead the Sabres with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sarah McKenna added 9 points. In game two Wednesday in Souris the girls once again played fabulous in the first quarter, but then fell into a scoring slump. The game was physical with both teams playing hard to win. In the end the ladies just couldn't find the hoop as they lost 48-32. Sarah P had 12 points and 6 blocks, while Emily Tuttosi added 10 points. The girls will now await a wildcard decision to gain entry to the Provincial Championships.

JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS The Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Team is headed off to Provincials!! The girls won their Interzone game Wednesday night against Nellie McClung, defeating the Stingers 40-22. It was a very slow start, but the girls came out with a vengeance in the second half, and took a big lead in the third quarter, which they would keep for the rest of the game. The girls truly earned the win as a team, with everyone playing great basketball in the second half. Jamie Sherritt was unstoppable under the hoop, scoring 7 points and bringing down 7 rebounds. The girls travel to Virden on Monday night to play for the Zone banner, then are off to Provincials next weekend. Great job girls! This program allows all Souris students K – 12 free admission to every Elks home game for the 2012-13 season. CAMPBELL’S SOUP “LABELS FOR EDUCATION” THANK YOU to everyone who clips and saves those labels and UPC codes. If you use these products then save those labels – Campbell’s Condensed soup, Chunky soup, Broth, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ready to serve soup, Habitant, Gardennay, Soup at Hand, V8Soups, Easy cooking sauces along with Prego sauce, V8 Splash/Fusion, Pace Salsa, Goldfish crackers. Collection bins are at the school, Big Way and Robbins Fine Foods. It seems like a lot of work but the labels would be just heading to the garbage anyways. The school appreciates everyone that has supported this program, so keep on saving those labels. Remember, both the label and UPC are needed. •Glenda McConnell
