WILLIAMS Hi everyone, Usually the weatherman would be saying that there is a chance of snow but lately it’s been a chance of rain. It is amazing that we can go from temperatures (including windchill) of -27˚ C one day to +2˚ C the next day with rain. The roads and sidewalks are still rather slippery so please be careful walking and driving. As winter continues to establish its grasp on the land please ensure that your sons/daughters are properly dressed when they leave for school in the morning. This request is for parents of bus students as well. Just because you are inside a bus does not mean that winter’s wrath cannot affect you. If your bus gets stranded it may be awhile before help arrives. Also, please make sure that your children have a second set of footwear for indoors. Slippers or sandals are fine. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our floors. Removing wet outside footwear goes a long way to maintaining our building. I have been asked by the School Division to make one clarification to the Inclement Weather policy: A bus will not run in the afternoon if it does not run in the morning. Exception: if the bus did not run in the morning due to foggy conditions, it will run in the afternoon if the fog has dissipated. Have a great week. IT’S TIME FOR CHRISTMAS CHEER!! It’s back…. It’s time for CHRISTMAS CHEER!!!! By Monday please start bringing food items to Souris School. Drop them off in the office and try to fill the window of Mr. William’s office. If we can fill it by

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Souris School collected 104 Christmas boxes to be shipped to less fortunate boys and girls this season. Be very proud of yourselves and thanks for thinking of others!! •Ms. Birch OVER $1700.00 TOWARDS PROJECTOR!! Thank you to students who donated coins towards the Souris Avalon Theatre projector. Over the last 2 months the Social Justice Fighters and Make Change Class have counted over $1730.00! This is an amazing amount in just two months. Thank you for making a difference! Way to go Souris School!!

•Mrs. Sobry SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR 2012 Wow! This year our Book Fair made a profit of $2776.33. Profits will be used to purchase books for the Souris School Library. The Book Fair is a major fundraiser for our Library. I am very appreciative to everyone

THANK YOU MARIE! One of the many things that the staff enjoys at this time of the year is Marie Peaslee’s Christmas cakes. Marie so generously brings her delicious cakes to the staff rooms for the staff to enjoy. Thank you Marie – they were a big hit once again. DID YOU LOSE A WEDDING RING? When we came back to work in August there were a large number of drink tabs left as a donation. Cathy Coulthard takes these tabs and they are donated so specialized wheelchairs can be purchased for children who need them. When she was sorting through them she found a man’s wedding ring. If you think it may be yours, you can contact Cathy with a description of the ring. ATTENTION GRADE 11 AND 12 STUDENTS/RESUME WRITING WORKSHOP – DECEMBER 12TH I would like to offer an opportunity for students to ensure they are prepared for applying for scholarship applications, part time jobs, etc. If there is enough interest in an after school workshop where students will work on their own resume and personal inventory of skills, I will plan to facilitate that on December 12th at the school beginning at 3:30 p.m. Time commitment for students that day will be approximately one hour. We will meet in a computer room and students will need to bring a memory stick

to save their data, and also have their own email addresses set up prior to that workshop. I will show them ways to save their resumes so that they will be accessible to them at any time, from any computer. Please let me know if you are interested. Also, if there are any Grade 10 students interested, please come and see me. We will run an after Christmas workshop if there are enough of you! EARLY AND MIDDLE YEARS NEWS Curling Clinic Our Grades 5 – 8 students are being offered an opportunity to participate in a curling clinic. The Souris Curling Club has organized a clinic for students who are interested in learning how to curl, or have curled and are wanting to improve their skills. The students will be instructed by world-class curlers, Reid Carruthers and Kaitlyn Lawes. The clinic will take place on December 10th at the Souris Curling Club, from 1:30-3:00 pm. We are very thankful that the Souris Curling Club has offered this opportunity to our students. Any student who applied for the curling clinic on Monday, December 10th has been accepted. Please remember your stretchy pants and CLEAN shoes. If you have any questions regarding the clinic, please contact Karen Dunbar. Please note that there will be no regular school curling on Monday, December 10th due to the special curling clinic being held. Middle Years Girls Basketball Coach Needed! We currently have a large number of grades 7 & 8 girls interested in playing

basketball, but do not have a coach for them. If you are interested in coaching our girls, please be sure to contact Mr. Trever Penner or Mrs. Leanne Rolfe. Managerial duties will be covered by a staff member, however a coach for our team is needed. PROVINCIAL VOLLEYBALL Ten AA Varsity Girls’ Volleyball teams arrived in Souris Thursday, November 22 to compete for a Provincial title. The teams were seeded in 2 pools according to the season rankings. In Pool A was the top seed Major Pratt Trojans from Russell along with the Elton Sabres, Steinbach Christian Flames, Mennonite College Blues from Gretna, and the Ashern Cobras. Pool B featured the hometown Souris Sabres who went in ranked 4th along with the Green Valley Pirates from Grunthal, Minnedosa Chancellors, Niverville Panthers, and the Helen Betty Osborne Huskies from Norway

House. After an intense 2 days of round robin play with most of the matches going to 3 sets, Major Pratt and Souris finished in 1st place of their respective pools. Receiving player of the game awards for Souris were Mackenzie Rowat, Stephanie Adams, Amber Doyle, and Chanel Becker.

Saturday’s playoffs resulted in some exciting matches. Taylor Skinner, Amber Doyle, and Mackenzie Rowat all received player of the game awards. Souris defeated MCI in the quarter finals before losing to Elton in a very close 3 set match. Souris went on to defeat Minnedosa in the bronze medal match to cap off a very successful season for the Sabres. Amber Doyle was named to the tournament allstar team. Members of the Souris team include Stephanie Adams, Chanel Becker, Amber Doyle, Carly Leverington, Maggie-Kas Murphy, Jennifer Rabe, Mackenzie Rowat, Taylor Skinner, Maria Vargas, Emma Boisvert, Hannah Cooke, Sabrina Kyle, Sarah Palson, and Jessie Robbins. Amber Doyle, Mackenzie Rowat, Chanel Becker, and Stephanie Adams have been selected to the Zone 9 AllStar team. Amber and Mackenzie were also chosen to represent Souris at the graduating all star banquet and game to be held in Winnipeg December 1st. VARSITY BOYS VOLLEYBALL The Souris Sabres varsity boys volleyball team travelled to Russell Nov 22-24 where they competed against the top 10 AA schools in the province for the Provincial championship. Despite a rocky start on Thursday, the boys played well against some good teams on Friday, and chalked up a win against the Carmen Cougars. Nathan Doull was named player of the game in that match, where he had 4 stuff blocks and 8 kills in the win. The boys ended up 4th in their pool, which set them up to play the Niverville Panthers in the first round of playoffs on Saturday.

The boys dominated in the first set, displaying an unstoppable offense and great defensive hustle, and beat Niverville 25-17. The second set was a close match, but the Sabres were unable to overcome some offensive errors, and the set went to Niverville. The third set was a nail-biter, with both the Sabres and the Panthers holding the lead at different points in the set. The final decision went to the Niverville Panthers, who ended up going on to win the entire tournament and become AA Provincial Champions. Though the season didn’t end with a win, there is much to celebrate for two of Souris' graduating players. Nathan Doull and Carter Suski have been named to Volleyball Manitobans’ graduating all-star team. To be chosen as a graduating all-star, you must display academic success, and exemplary volleyball skills. Players are nominated by their coaches, voted upon by opposing coaches, and ultimately chosen by a committee representative of the province. Carter and Nathan will head to Winnipeg on December 1 to receive their awards, and to play in a match against Manitoba’s top players in A, AA, and AAA volleyball. Congratulations boys! BASKETBALL The Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls Basketball teams kicked off their seasons playing at Crocus Thursday, November 29th. The JV's played amazingly in the first half and held on to pick up a win with a final score of 44-31. Janaye Wurtz scored 11 while Krystal Adams added 9. Kristen Leverington led all players with 8 rebounds. For some it was their first ever game of basketball, well done ladies! The Varsity team also picked up their first victory of the season 80-19 as their defensive play was awesome all night. The ladies were led by the duo of Emily Tuttosi and Sara McKenna as they both scored 14, while Jessie Robbins added 12 and Sarah Palson 11. Amy Tuttosi chipped in with a game high 9 rebounds.

The ladies continued their winning ways on Monday, December 4th defeating Neepawa in another exhibition game 53-31. Sarah Palson was a force leading the way with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Amber Doyle added 8 rebounds and 4 steals for the Sabres. Finally, on December 5th the girls were back in Brandon this time taking on the 4A Crocus varsity team. Poor shooting and turnover problems limited scoring as the team managed only 3 first quarter points. However, the girls were up to the challenge as they played much better after that en route to a 9 point loss. Emily had 12 points and 7 steals while Tara Farmer and Sarah P chipped in with 6 each. The ladies are off to Neelin to take part in the Westman Invitational on December 14/15 before opening up Zone 9 league play in Killarney on the 18th. Last night the Junior Varsity Girl’s Basketball team improved to 2-0 in exhibition play as they defeated Vincent Massey 47-34. Jaime Sherritt had 14 points in the win, Kristen Leverington added 10, and Krystal Adams went 100% from the three-point line. The girls’ next home game is next Thursday, December 13th, so come out and cheer them on!
