More Tips and Hints When making your source cards, underline all items
that are italicized when typing.
All source cards will have a hanging indentation when your citation information is long enough to go on to the next line.
The format for your Source Cards in the same as the format for your Works Cited page, except that you do not put the call number on your Works Cited page, and titles are italicized rather than underlined when typing.
Compile your sources in alphabetical order by author’s last name to create your Works Cited page.

General Guidelines Use cards of the same size and style (4x6 index cards).
Place the first word of the Source Card and the page number of your source in the upper right hand corner of the note card.
Use abbreviations and phrases.
Place all verbatim (word-for-word) notes in quotation marks.
Place a descriptive heading at the top of each card to indicate the main idea.
Work each source into your own thinking before you take notes on it to avoid plagiarism.

Sample Note Card
“The witches disappeared, but witch hunting in
America did not. Each generation must learn the
lessons of history or risk repeating its
mistakes. Salem should warn us to think hard
about how to best safeguard and improve our
system of justice.”
