Message from the new GMIT President

Dear Students

I would like to take this opportunity to say “hello” to you as the new President of GMIT.

I hope you have all enjoyed your year in GMIT and wish you every success in your examinations.

An active and engaged student body is of course what gives an Institute its character and GMIT is well known for the positive and friendly relationship between students and staff.

Equally, your Students’ Union plays a big role in ensuring your welfare while in College in conjunction with the Student Services team, and in representing your interests and concerns with the management team. I am looking forward to working with Joe and Alan in the forthcoming academic year.

I hope you have an enjoyable summer break and look forward to welcoming you back in September. To those who are leaving GMIT, hopefully you will be able to secure employment whether in Ireland or elsewhere.

Yours sincerely

Michael CarmodyPresident

Hey everyone Well where did that year go?? My word how the term has flew by and here we are facing into another summer break yet again.

Hopefully all the hard work and study that you have did will have stood to you in the exams and your results go well for you.And remember if you need any advice or help with anything exam related please contact the SU. The office remains open throughout the summer so please feel free to drop in. As this is my final note as President of GMIT Students’ Union, I just want to say a big thank you to everyone here in GMIT who has made my term in office so fulfilling and enjoyable over the last 2 years. There are so many people I wish to thank but the list is too long. There have been so many highlights to my term in office such as Arthurs Day, the Fees Protest, Christmas Day, various welfare campaigns and events but the one that will always stand out for me was MOXYGEN 2011. Hopefully to be repeated all next year! Most importantly though helping students is our primary responsibility in this role and I hope that over the last 2 years I have done that on a day to day basis as best as I could. I must admit it was a job that I cherished each day and one that I will miss. There is a unique ethos and bond in this college like no other between staff and students and I think from someone who has been both I will always remember that in years to come. Finally, I want to wish Joe and Alan the very best of luck for next year and I know that they will do an excellent job. From working alongside Joe this year I have seen his dedication to the role and indeed Alan also from his time involved in the Welfare committee so rest assured the union is in good hands. So thats it folks all I can say is best of luck with the results, have a great summer and most importantly enjoy your future in what ever life may bring to you. It has been a pleasure to represent you all. All the best

Colin

Hi all,

I’m delighted to be writing to you all as the new Vice President and Welfare Officer of GMIT Student Union. No doubt I have big shoes to fill after the work of Joe last year but I will give it my all and hopefully next year will be as big of a success. For all those who are finishing in GMIT I just want to congratulate you and wish you every success in the future. For those who will be back next year I look forward to representing you and working hard on your behalf. I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable summer and can’t wait to see you all in September! (and hopefully not August!)

Sincerely,

Alan

Hi guys,

It’s hard to believe but we’ve reached the end of the academic year! I have to say, my term as Vice-President has absolutely flown by and while often stressful and challenging, it’s been an extremely enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

Good luck to all of you with your exam results, let’s hope the year of hard work (in most cases) and the last minute cramming (in almost all cases!) pays off and you manage to fulfil your potential and achieve your goals. Some of you may now be finished in GMIT and not be returning, and I want to wish you the very best of luck in the future. For those of you who will be coming back, I look forward to representing you again next year.

We had a few great events to cap the year off in style, particularly the Student Achievement Awards which took place this year in the Clayton Hotel, allowing us to pay tribute to our finest sports teams and players, our most gifted students and our most dedicated societies. This was followed by the End of Year UV Party in Club K!

There have been many memorable highlights throughout the year, such as the “Education, not Emigration” protest marches in Dublin and Galway, MOXEGEN 2011 during RAG Week, and of course most recently the End of Year Ball with the Coronas! Also, my final welfare campaign has now come and gone, but I have no hesitation whatsoever in handing over the reins to newly-elected Alan Doherty. I have no doubt he will be a fine Welfare Officer and student representative in the year ahead, and I look forward to working with him.

I want to thank the students of GMIT for electing me as your Student Union President for the year 2011/12. It was a tough campaign, but the reaction and mandate which I received will spur me on and I promise to earn every single vote through my work-rate over the upcoming year. I also want to thank my welfare working group, anyone who volunteered with the SU throughout the year, and the rest of the GMITSU full-time staff, who assisted me in every possible way throughout the year.

Finally, I’d like to thank our current SU President, Colin Canny. Colin has done a remarkable job working in the SU over the past two years, and contributed enormously to student life here in GMIT. I have enjoyed the past year working with him hugely, and have learnt a great deal from it. I’d like to wish him every success in the future!!!I hope you all have a great summer and if you need anything, remember myself and Alan will be working right through the summer and feel free to contact us about any issue!!

Take careJoe

GMITSU once again celebrated Christmas in style with the annual Christmas Day event! After enjoying a hearty Christmas dinner, the Elastic Band

performed in a very snowy Bodkins Librarybar! Even ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’ Santa made an appearance!

The Students’ Union also held the anual Kids Christmas Party in conjunction with the Chaplaincy, supported by the Galway Lions Club.

On Monday 4th of October, GMIT took on NUIG in a light-hearted “University Challenge” quiz, hosted by Ryan Tubridy on his show. Thankfully, the GMIT team came through victorious by 11 points to 8. The GMIT team was Colin Canny, Joe O’Connor and Martin Rooney. The NUI Galway team was made up of Peter Mannion, Emmet Connolly and Emma Conway.

Club K was once again the host to GMITSU’s annual Halloween Fancy Dress party!

RugbyThe team had a busy season, travelling to the likes of Derry, Belfast, and Sligo for games. They reached the semi-final of the Colleges cup in Division 2 and were very unlucky to lose to CIT with CIT going on to beat Carlow in the final.

Ladies Basketball TeamThey were going through the league campaign with just one loss out of 6. Unluckily to draw second due to points difference and battled hard against Tallaght I.T in a narrow defeat in the ALL-Ireland Semi-final.

Archery TeamThe Archery team have taken part in 7 “Fours” throughout the country successfully held their own “Four”. The team uphold great team spirit has brought our confidence & skills in all members, regarding team jobs & medals.

Cricket: National Intervarsity WinnersParticularly in a year when the Irish Cricket team achieved so much success at the world cup in India (including that win over England), it is fantastic to see the GMIT Cricket

team come on in leaps in bounds, with the team growing in numbers and confidence. The season was a resounding success for the team, culminating in victory in the national inter-varsity tournament held at NUI Galway, beating teams such as University of Ulster Jordanstown in the final. GMIT Cricket takes great pride in having gone through this entire tournament unbeaten, and to do this against players who are in the current Irish international U-19 cricket team is an achievement to be applauded.

SoccerThe GMIT soccer team, getting stronger with every passng year, made it all the way to the national Umbro Cup final, where they were unlucky to lose out to DIT.

GAAThis year seen both our Sigerson and Fitzgibbon teams fall to the hands of UCC (University College Cork) at the Quarter- final stage. Our Freshers football team bowed out at the quarter final stage to St. Mary’s in the championship after enjoying a fine league run, while our Fresher’s Hurlers were eventually knocked out of the championship by a strong DIT outfit. Our ladies football team had an eventful year which seen them make the quarter-finals of the championship only to be beaten by Sligo IT while the ladies Camogie team exited the Purcell cup following defeat to Trinity.
