Six-week online courses for middle and primary years have really deepened the IB training for the teachers so that they get the most out of their professional development. These courses replaced 3-day workshops and were more beneficial as teachers got to meet and learn about other schools around the world. Teachers have also attended Positive Discipline in the Classroom workshops to reinforce a focus on solutions that are reasonable, related to the concern, respectful of everyone involved, and helpful in the effort to redirect poor choices to pro-social choices. One of our teachers described the workshop as “Phenomenal!” Together, these programs are about creating a safe and caring school environment where risk-taking, critical thinking, and other IB learner attributes can grow and develop. “The longer we put Positive Discipline into practice, the more obvious are the connections with IB philosophy,” said Valerie Stein, our Library Media Specialist. IB and Positive Discipline Take-OffSoundview School became an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in July 2009. The IB curriculum is a framework that focuses on the total growth of the developing child. It is a transdisciplinary program of international education designed to foster the development of the whole child. Teachers are guided by the IB curriculum framework to provide consistent approaches to learning and teaching. They work together as a school to continually improve the overall program and to integrate learning across subjects. Soundview has also integrated Positive Discipline into the program. This helps us in our efforts to raise self-regulating citizens who treat others with respect and civility.

Moving forward with these programs, our teachers have attended professional development workshops, for both IB and Positive Discipline. Six-week online courses for middle and primary years have really deepened the IB training for the teachers so that they get the most out of their professional development. These courses replaced 3-day workshops and were more beneficial as teachers got to meet and learn about other schools around the world. “The longer we put Positive Discipline into practice, the more obvious are the connections with IB philosophy,” said Valerie Stein, our Library Media Specialist.

JANUARY 2011 REPORT FROM THE SOUNDVIEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear Members of the Soundview Community:

These are great times at Soundview School. In no other year has our vision of an IB education been so fully realized. Since January 3, we have added seven students to our community. We were one of the first schools in the area to show the nationally renowned “Race to Nowhere,” movie. We are sending a middle school delegation to the Dominican Republic on the first-ever Soundview School World Service Trip. National peace expert, Carl Hobert, returns to Soundview to host a middle school seminar on Rwanda in February. We have a significant number of prospects for the upcoming school year and we are looking forward to filling our classrooms.

Monthly, we will provide you with an update on Board activities. Here are some of the items we are currently working on:

Financial AuditAs part of the fiscal responsibility of the Board of Trustees, we contracted with a third party firm to do a financial audit of the school. This firm is one that specializes in the financial auditing of non-profit schools. This is the first time such an audit has been performed and going forward, it will be an annual process at Soundview. The Board of Trustees has received the report back from the auditing firm and we are very pleased to report that Soundview passed the audit with flying colors.

PNAIS AccreditationBoard Committees have been working on their sections to complete for the final document for the PNAIS accreditation visit scheduled for spring 2012. The PNAIS Accreditation Document is an extensive document that reviews every aspect of operating a private, independent school; the final document will be approximately 200 pages in length.

We had a representative of PNAIS visit the school in preparation for next year’s visit. She asked a number of questions regarding The Board’s preparation for the visit and after this conversation, both sides are very confident we are on the right track.

Five Year Facility PlanFollowing several years of planning, Soundview has filed for a conditional use permit with the City of Lynnwood. This conditional use permit formalizes a multi-stage expansion plan for Soundview School. This is the plan that was presented at our annual meeting (Oktoberfest, Fall 2010) and was communicated to all who were not able to attend. This plan, over a prolonged period of time, accommodates expansion to the current first grade classrooms, construction of a “mini-gym” behind the current computer room, expansion of the early childhood wing and a significant expansion in front of the PAC, that includes four additional, second story classrooms.

Five Year PlanThe finance committee of the The Board is completing a five year financial plan that outlines the financial success of the school. As part of this, The Head Support committee will be completing a five year staffing plan that includes needed faculty as well as additional administrative support. These plans tie back to the overall strategic plan that The Board has presented at the last two Annual Meetings (Oktoberfest).

Discovery and DiligenceThe Soundview Board of Trustees recently added another committee: Discovery and Diligence, led by Board member, Adrian Biesecker. The purpose of this committee is to honor the entrepreneurial spirit of Soundview School by the continued exploration of opportunities that further the Soundview School Mission. Since we are a school whose values include moving forward with the world, it is congruent that we have a committee that devotes its resources to the opportunities of Soundview School.

Please be assured that each and every Board member is available for your input. Our Board of Trustees includes these parents: Jeff Perry, John Connolly, Tina Stryker, Adrian Biesecker, Vianne Reay, Kendra Yoshimoto, Michael Linscott and myself. If you wish to e-mail me, you can contact me at [email protected]. I’m pleased that we have just added three Board Candidate Members from our parent community: Pervin Kahlohke, Keith Kubie and Janet Trowbridge. These individuals will provide parents, staff and board with additional support as we carry out our mission.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Soundview School; our focus is the delivery of a great learning environment for our children.

The 2009-2010 Annual Fund Soundview School had a very successful Annual Fund Drive. In the school’s young history, this year brought in the most family participation, as well as dollars raised.

Over $34,000 was raised with over 56% family partipation. Last year, ten percent of families contributed to bring in $10,000. Many thanks to all of the families that have helped us increase participation and raise over $34,000!

No gift is too small and every single gift is important. As Soundview School works toward Pacific Northwest Association of Independent School (PNAIS) accreditation, it is very important to demonstrate that we have the support of our entire family community.

Proceeds from the Annual Fund support the ongoing operations and mission of Soundview School.

The 2009-2010 Annual Benefit Auction The Annual Auction was held on Saturday, March 20th at the Everett Events Center. Over 180 parents, faculty and staff, administration, and alumni were in attendance and participated in the festivities. This included a silent auction, dinner, live auction, and dancing. The 2009-2010 Auction netted $56,000 to support the ongoing mission and operations of the school.

The 2010-2011 Auction is set, so don’t forget to mark your calendars:

Saturday, March 19, 2011

Please donate and sign up to go! Visit www.soundview.org.

See you all there!!

THANK YOU

Donors and VolunteersSoundview School is a community that truly works together. Throughout the 2009-2010 school year,

we had a successful Annual Fund and received thousands of hours of family service time from

our parents and grandparents.

Just about every day there is at least a parent or two at school or at home, putting their time into supporting their child’s school. These adults help with different school events from concerts to the Annual Auction to the annual Arts Festival. They

also help in the classrooms with field trips, classroom parties and performances. Some are

Board members and some help with tedious administrative tasks like mailings.

Families that serve help keep Soundview running smoothly. We would not be able to function

without the help and hard work of our community and for that, we thank you! We appreciate

anything and everything that you do for us, big or small. Giving your time is one of the most

generous gifts and we want to recognize the more than 100 families that contributed to

Soundview.

THANK YOU!

The Soundview Playfield Facelift Project

Has Begun and is UnderwayOver the years a field, just as anything, needs regular maintenance. Soundview School had a playing field that was in desperate need of sprucing up, and with the help of families and donors in the Soundview community, we have been able to begin our playfield renovation in 2010.

With the funds that were raised through the school’s Fund-a-Need program, Soundview has been able to build 168 feet of solid fence between the east side of our field and our neighbors, level the ground and level the drop-off at the edge of the field. This took most of the funds that were raised. Plans are to continue improving the playfield each year as we continue to raise funds to complete and

expand this area for our students.

Athletics has opened up a new and exciting pursuit for many children at Soundview School. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade have been able to sign up

for sports like soccer, ultimate frisbee and cross country. In order for the school to continue building upon our athletics programs we need to have a quality field where we can practice and hold home games. The previous condition of our field has led to unneeded injuries. The pitted field, as it was, twisted ankles, threw out backs, and provided for a very unpleaseant experience for students during both PE class and sports practice.

A renovated field will decrease the instances of these injuries and make sports and PE more fulfilling for students. Athletics give an opportunity for students to become balanced in their lives. Academics are of utmost importance. However, being sedentary leads to an unbalanced life in which students will miss out on the benefits of athletics, such as confidence, leadership opportunities, working cooperatively with others, and developing physical skills. A quality athletic field will facilitate these benefits.

Soundview School is very excited for the completion of our renovated playfield and better opportunities for our students!

Soundview’s Chess Team competed in the Washington State Elementary Chess Championship last April at the Tacoma Convention Center. The team of ten included students from Kindergarten through 4th grade.

In 2008, Soundview sent four players who took 24th place. In 2009, the school sent ten players who took 17th place. This year, the Soundview Chess Team took an incredible 11th place!

During the 2010-2011 school year, students are broadening their chess knowledge and skills. Kindergarten and Jr. Kindergarten classes have chess integrated into their curriculum with a National Grand Master and the after-school Chess Team is now under the leadership of a National Master.

Best of luck to the Soundview Chess Team!

Nine Soundview students traveled to Auburn, Washington in late January to participate in the 2010 Riverside Jazz Festival. Growing individually and as an ensemble, the musicians matured and earned 2nd place at the festival. These students include George P., Rahul M., Maggie B., Sarah K., Amber P., Tristan D., Samy M., Liam H., and Nolan S. As a soloist, Amber P. was awarded honorable mention.

The Soundview Jazz Ensemble was probably the smallest band in the middle school division. Dr. Ed Castro, the 5th through 8th grade music and band instructor at Soundview, ran into one of the judges, who he already knew, who said, “You guys are small, but swingin’!”

From Our Head of School... Fellow Community Members and Friends of Soundview School,

Soundview is continuously deepening the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, Positive Discipline and the integration of visual and performing arts. Our focus is to provide a comprehensive, holistic educational program that develops lifelong habits. With our framework built from the IB, Positive Discipline and Critical Thinking, Soundview students consistently reinforce important habits of minds from class-to-class, grade-to-grade.

It is so wonderful to witness the fruits of our hard work through our students’ work and their understanding of the IB characteristics and problem solving skills!

This 2010-2011 school year, we have brought numerous enrichment opportunities to our students in all grades and built them into our curriculum. We have a Claymation specialist, Youth NW Theater drama specialist, Chess Grand Master and the Pacific Science Center all working with our students. Our program also demands high quality professional development in IB, Singapore math, Critical Thinking and Positive Discipline, and we have spent significant time engaging faculty with professional meetings and workshops this year.

Your volunteer hours, annual giving, auction proceeds and donations are helping provide these amazing, enriching programs and curriculums to Soundview students.

We want to thank all of our community members who contributed time, money and talents to Soundview School. We continue to work diligently toward fulfilling our mission and vision and we appreciate your continued generous support and partnership in this exciting journey!
