Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers from his 1971 album Just as I Am

The original video of aint no sunshine used a series of different shots including close ups and long shots this allowed the audience to feel a connection to the band and the main performer. Close-ups are used for distinguishing main performer from the rest of the band, also designed to focus attention on an actor's expression. A close-up of a person emphasizes their emotional state this is meant to complement the genre, theme or message in the song/ lyrics. Whereas a mid-shot or wide-shot is more appropriate for delivering general information, a close-up exaggerates facial expressions which convey emotion. The viewer is drawn into the subject's personal space and shares their feelings.

The mid shots used are really to show off the rest the band, in the 1970s this was really the selling point of the video images that really allowed the audience to feel the emotion that the band was try to emote through facial expressions and body language

There have been other renditions of ain’t no sunshine and other interpretations of the video. A recent video changed the tempo the video and changed it from a sensitive love song to a up tempo dance song the images then also changed as so did the genre.

The performer uses his selling point which is dancing to complement the song this changes the audience to someone who enjoys soul music to someone who prefers an up tempo feel good track.

We are attempting to be symbolic, using things such as spot lights this connotates a performance

taking place but when the lights go out the performance ends, as the lyrics clearly state ‘aint no

sunshine when she’s gone’ this is a suggest the lyrics without being so literal.

Our aim is to make our video visuals engaging and aesthetically pleasing without being so literal we

want the visuals to suggest the lyrics overall being ambiguous.

Our genre is soul and r&b we want to isolate our performer putting her in strange places where you

would often feel claustrophobic for instance a cellar, basement, in the corner of a van, and/or under

the table . With this we will experiment with shots, there will be shots such as extreme close up and

close ups this will allow her emotions to be heightened which the audience will find allot more

interesting and engaging.

We will experiment with colour and the choice of shots, without

completely confusing the audience, we will suggest sunshine through our choice of colour and miss

en scene. We will attempt to engage the audience with visuals that contrast the lyrics this will

suggest the feelings and emotions that the performer will be feeling that the song may not

necessary suggest.

We might experiment with the colour of the

video. We might have a collaboration of black and white and colour this is because black and white

can exaggerate an emotion a lot more than colour. The focal point in the video would be the

performer if the video was in black and white the most interesting thing would be the performer this

would also be accomplished through shots and framework.
