Remind students that blends are two letters that come together to make two sounds. Use the Cards to review with students that some blends, called initial blends, are at the beginning of a word and that some blends, called final blends, are at the end of a word. Showing students the Card with the bl blend, remind students that it is the blend bl, as in block, and that it makes the /bl/ sound. Repeat with the other blend Cards. Small Group Initial and Final Blends Cards Place students in small groups of four to six. Show a student the front of the first Card, read the script on the back, and have that student repeat the script. For example, if the Card is the bl blend Card, show it to the student; say bl, block, /bl/; and have the student repeat bl, block, /bl/. Show the next Card to the next student and repeat. Go through the deck a couple of times so that students get more exposure to the blends. As students become used to the routine, show them the Cards, and encourage them to tell you the blend, keyword, and sound without your prompting. Once a student is able to tell you the blend and its sound, the keyword is no longer necessary. Variation: After going through the Cards once, tell students that you are going to time them to see how fast they can go through the Cards: Mix up the Cards, and time students; then mix up the Cards again, and time them again. Keep track of each student’s times on the Initial and Final Blends Assessment Recording Sheet Reproducible, and praise each student as his or her times improve. Initial and Final Blends Assessment Copy the Initial and Final Blends Assessment Student Sheet and the Initial and Final Blends Assessment Recording Sheet Reproducibles for each student. Periodically assess each student to determine his or her areas of strength and weakness: Place the Initial and Final Blends Assessment Student Sheet Reproducible in front of each student, and show him or her only one row at a time. Instruct students to say the name and sound of each blend. As students give answers, record each response on the Initial and Final Blends Assessment Reproducible.
