As we leave 2014 and head into the New Year, now is the time to take stock of your property portfolio and the current market analysis, which will continue to experience healthy growth across the Emirates, especially in the residential villa sector.

One location that will never lose its lustre is the idyllic Palm Jumeirah. We have a diverse selection of exclusive properties for sale on this unique isle to suit all tastes and budgets, from page 52.

Elsewhere in this issue, we head to London and delve into the polished aesthetic of interior design duo Lawson Robb, and find out why the former star designer at Harrods has branched out on her own. We also take a step back in time with Audrey Hepburn through a new photographic tome of her life, and then jump to the future with the next generation of designers to emerge from the Emirates, with designs that pay homage to their heritage.

I hope you find many inspiring ideas in this issue, to take you forward into a prosperous New Year.

Wish upon a chairHans Wegner has received a lot of birthday wishes, and they’re yet to cease. Three powerhouses have come together to celebrate the iconic master chairmaker. With 2014 marking the Dane’s posthumous centenary, his chair designs have been celebrated across the world. Most recently, Paul Smith, Kvadrat Maharam and Carl Hansen & Søn launched a limited edition capsule collection in Dubai that pays homage to Wegner’s classic chairs, including Wishbone and Shell. carlhansen.com

> Arguably the Middle East’s most popular female designer, Nada Debs’ contemporary furniture designs have become pioneers for the modern home. One of her most recent works saw her collaborate with Kartell and S*uce to redesign Ferruccio Laviani's iconic Bourgie table lamp for its 10th anniversary. Debs, famous for quirky simplicity, came up with Catching Light, so-called for the neon-green net capturing the silver lamp. Kartell invited 10 designers from the Middle East to reinterpret the lamp for its autumn tour, following in the footsteps of Nendo, Stark and Urquiola (to name a few) who redesigned the lamp for the summer tour earlier in the year. nadadebs.com

Melting ice, blossoming flowers and glass forests – these are just some of the landmark lighting

installations Lasvit has pioneered since its inception just seven years ago.

Its latest piece, ‘Couture’ by Blanka Matragi, recently made its international debut at Dubai’s luxurious Downtown Design exhibition. The bespoke glass lighting sculpture celebrates the Czech fashion designer’s work, with a double-layered fishtail chandelier.

“First and foremost glass is the most important element in our work,” says Lasvit founder Leon Jakimič. “But we have four other key principles that combine together: craftsmanship – so it is more like a piece of art and can never be replicated – plus design, poetry and technology.”

The company also premiered its latest

technological innovation at the show, a kinetic lighting installation that stunned visitors with an opening and closing flower-shaped chandelier.

“Alice is our most impressive piece to date,” enthuses Jakimič. “The designer, Petra Krausova, individually hand-blew each petal 60cm thick, which is pretty much as thick as you can blow glass. You can see movement not just vertically but also horizontally, from 18 cerebral engines that each support three or four components in the design. It can also be remotely controlled via your iPhone or iPad, and move to 10 different choreographies, or synchronise to background music.

“I consider our pieces to be luxury products, and to achieve that we have to have authenticity, which relates to the region and its craftsmanship. Bohemia, where we are based in the Czech Republic, is a region with a glass tradition more than 1,000-years-old – it’s the second oldest after Murano.”

While Lasvit has made a name for itself in the lighting world in recent years, Jakimič is from a long line of glass specialists who all grew up and forged careers in Bohemia. Due to its varied chemical compositions, Bohemia glass has more lustre and shine in comparison to its Italian counterpart.

"‘Bohemian perfection’ is our company’s ethos because it’s a play on words,” continues Jakimič. “‘Bohemian’ relates to Bohemia in Czech Republic and our creative thinking, mixed with our quest for perfection and precise craftsmanship. Of the 350 people employed by Lasvit half are bohemians and half are perfectionists; it is challenging to manage such a group of people but also the only way to maximise the potential of our carefree yet precise approach to design.

“Our works are not just lighting fixtures but also art pieces and installations in three-dimensional form. You’ll find them in the most impressive environments around the world.” lasvit.com

What does Poliform’s tagline ‘My Life Design Stories’ signify? This shows that at the back of what you see in the bedroom or the kitchen, for example, there is a big company that’s working there. Poliform doesn’t just make specified products but also collections that produce everything for the house, and this is seen as an exception in Italy because we have so many companies that specialise in sofas or they specialise in kitchens or the living room, the bedroom or accessories, so we offer a 360-degree service. So My Life Design Stories is a way of saying, ‘before it was only my life but now there are

different stories,’ because in these varied collections we can offer different finishes and designs so nothing is ever the same for the end user. How are tastes in the UAE different to other countries?Poliform works with over 100 countries so we are distributed more or less everywhere and we see the customer is different from country to country. In the Emirates, this is where the product has to be important and classical – compared to other markets where there is more demand for minimal products.

That’s a lot of countries… How do your designs cater to so many differentmarkets? We are a high target company with very high quality products and a particular design style, so whether the shop is in New York or Sydney or Dubai our goal is to keep our personality, so we don’t change that. However, different finishes change the taste of the design. For each customer we consider the bespoke elements in the finishes: the kind of wood of the walk-in closet or leather of a chair, so what was originally traditional has become more modern. For example, the Santa Monica

armchair, one of our bestsellers designed by Jean-Marie Massaud, is produced with leathers and fabrics, and on top of that different levels of fabrics and different kinds of leather. Poliform can satisfy a young guy who wants to furnish his house with a modern closet, or a person who is 60-years-old who likes good fitting furniture but wants a more classic wood like walnut, and a clear colour like white or cream.

Why are Italian brands such as yours popular in the UAE?In the furniture market a product that is ‘Made in Italy’ is considered to be at the very top. There is an area in Italy called Brianza, where we are based, where there are a lot of companies that are well known in the world as representing Made in Italy very well. Here in the north of Italy this group of companies work with the most important architects around the world (like Jean-Marie Massaud). On top of this we are also interested in the production, technology and automisation

of manufacturing to help the product maintain its position at the top.

How has the company grown in recent years? We have to say that throughout the world we are having much

success. If you see Poliform – or any of these companies from Brianza – we are in the most beautiful shops in the most important streets in the best cities, all around the world. We have consistently experienced between 8 per cent and 10 per cent growth every year, and in the last five, six and seven years we have doubled this. How will the company continue to grow?Like the last two years, the next two will focus on increasing the amount of loose furniture, such as sofas, armchairs, coffee tables and side tables. Poliform has been very well known for many years as a producer of systems, such as wardrobe, kitchen and living room systems, however, the architects that we collaborate with tell us more and more that they want loose furniture, so we are having a lot of success

A PRODUCT MADE IN ITALY IS CONSIDERED TO BE AT THE VERY TOP

with this. Now our production ratio is 60 per cent systems and 40 per cent loose furniture. Five years ago it was 80:20. Our goal is to be 40:60 because loose furniture is simpler than systems. Imagine you deliver custom-made walk-in wardrobes or bespoke kitchens from Italy to America, or Japan or Sydney, and they have to be installed as well – that is not as easy as shipping loose furniture.

How do you make things easier for your international clients?Well, on the other side we have our long-term partners like Obegi in Dubai who we trust to sell and install our systems. They are able to go to the site and take perfect dimensions for our team in Italy to make accordingly, and then Obegi will oversee installation for us back in the UAE. We came to the country over a decade ago because we were developing our international presence and we wanted to sell in Dubai and Abu Dhabi as we knew there was a market there for us. We cannot do without Obegi because we specialise in production, not distribution. So it is important that we have a local partner.

So Poliform sees much demand from Dubai and Abu Dhabi?Yes, we do. We still have some difficulties but it is a market where we see a lot of potential. When you think how much we are doing and how much we can do in a city with so much building… But we have to consider our design and style and the market here is different to others, such as Europe, for example. However, the possibilities are growing, which is why we are opening our new shop with Obegi near Burj Al Arab. www.poliform.it

Be a shade braverResidents in the GCC are renowned for their love of beige. In the garden its camouflage qualities are a sensible option: unsightly dust marks remain hidden and there’s comfort to be had with blending into the surrounding desertscape – like a basic instinct to hide and survive. There’s good news for those who prefer to stand out from the crowd, as garden furniture is set to get a few shades braver this winter. Bright floral accessories will compete with your frangipanis and petunias; turquoise upholstery is perfect by the pool; and monochrome furniture will make a statement on the patio. Sir Paul Smith has moved away from his signature stripe aesthetic with a beautiful limited edition Oriental Birds design for The Rug Company. Smith is one of many illustrious designers that have been enticed by The Rug Company over the years, infusing its textiles with fashionable details, colours and motifs. In what is the company’s finest rug to date, Oriental

Birds took almost a year to make and celebrates exceptional craftsmanship. The rug is entirely handmade from the finest hand-spun Tibetan wool and silk yarns, with Nepalese weavers using their extraordinary skills to individually lace 300 knots per square inch, in order to achieve the most delicate details in the feathers and petals. “Design for the home

has changed significantly over time,” says Smith. “When we come to rugs, previously they would have been in very solid colours and now they take a lot of references from chinoiserie and elegant styling. The Oriental Birds rug has wonderful rich colours and a sense of the Orient that feels completely relevant to today.” therugcompany.com/int

WORDS: LARA BRUNT

Harrods’ former interior design wunderkind Sara Cosgrove has branched out on her own. In Residence caught up with her to talk trends, challenges and her love of the Middle East

Mixing IT UP

INTERIORS

In less than a decade, interior designer Sara Cosgrove has achieved more than most dream of in a lifetime. She’s worked for some of the most respected names in the business, tackled one of the world’s most prestigious design

briefs, established the interior design business for a world-renowned department store, and, most recently, founded her own luxury design consultancy. Unsurprisingly, she struggles to name her career highlight. “I fall in love with different projects for different reasons and every single project brings something new in terms of learning and design,” she says in her soft Irish lilt.

While Cosgrove’s interiors are as polished as the designer herself, she also loves to let go. “I have quite a flexible approach to design,” she says. “For me, every property tells a story. I love layered, textured design that doesn’t take itself too seriously.” She recounts a recent penthouse development in London’s fashionable Chelsea. “I was really able to show my style, using lots of colour and pattern and really mix the materials. I used lots of my favourite colours like purples, teals, whites and greys and added metallic accents. It was a lot of fun.”

Cosgrove discovered her talent for interior design almost by accident while studying at Trinity College Dublin. “My parents are quite traditional and they

wanted me to do what they called a ‘grown-up’ career, so I studied a classic art degree,” she says. To satisfy her creative side, she also studied fashion design at night, which led to an internship with designer John Rocha. When Rocha branched out into interior and architectural design, Cosgrove readily got involved. “That’s when I realised interiors were my real passion,” she says. She moved to London to train at the prestigious KLC School of Design, before joining luxury lifestyle brand Allegra Hicks as an assistant interior designer in 2005.

Cosgrove soon moved on to Helen Green Design, eventually leading a team on various high-profile projects including the spectacular Nero super yacht. Working on such a detail-driven project created its own challenges. “There are so many technical elements that go into designing a yacht itself and, with the interior,

most expensive residential development, before joining Harrods in 2009. During her tenure at the Knightsbridge store, she was responsible for developing The Studio, a bespoke interiors service that caters to every whim, whether it’s Lalique crystal staircase balustrades or a set of framed, autographed football shirts. “I had an incredible time at Harrods. I was there for just over five years and managed to work on so many projects in the UK and internationally,” she says. “A brand like Harrods has so much international recognition and is really driven to deliver for the client.”

Cosgrove is equally driven, establishing her own design studio earlier this year with offices in Dublin and London. The firm specialises in luxury commercial and residential interior design, as well as product design, for discerning clients scattered around the world. “I’ve done a

you’ve got to be really methodical. Every single item is designed and weighed, so in the bathrooms you might want to put marble everywhere, but you may not be able to,” she explains. “Most people who commission a super yacht are really looking for their own island, their own escape, so it’s fun developing something

they wouldn’t have anywhere else, but you’ve always got to think about the technical aspects of design, as well as the beautiful aesthetic.”

Cosgrove’s next role was at Candy & Candy, where she oversaw the design for One Hyde Park, billed as the world’s

lot of work in the Middle East, including Dubai, Oman and Doha, and it’s a region that I really enjoy working in,” she says. “I finished a beautiful big house overlooking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi last summer and it was absolutely fabulous working with the clients, who were a really lovely family.”

As interior themes and trends become increasingly global, Cosgrove says regional tastes tend to give way to designs that are more universal in appeal, reflecting the international lifestyle of her clients, but no less individual. “I think people, no matter where they’re from, have their own view

of what home is, or what their project should look like,” she muses. “There’s going to be cultural nuances here and there, but actually I find it’s not so much about the culture, it’s about the people, the individual. And now we’re such a global world – everyone’s on the Internet and travelling all the time, staying in Paris, London, New York – and there’s so much exposure that there are similarities across the board, especially at the high level.”

In search of inspiration and trends, Cosgrove travels widely, attending design fairs and meeting with suppliers and other creatives. What’s caught her eye recently at the major shows? “In Paris, the furniture company Frato had a beautiful collection, very elegant and tailored. We also saw a lot of very interesting finishes and a lot of emphasis on material, which I thought was beautiful,” she says. “In London, we saw a lot of craftsmanship, heritage and a real emphasis on handcrafted goods. For example, De Gournay, an amazing hand-painted paneling company, had some beautiful new additions. And in New York, there was a lot of pattern and print, and print on print, so you could see a real trend towards maximalism styling where ‘more is more’. Diane von Furstenberg has just launched a new fabric collection with Kravet, which was really quite wild and fun.”

“But,” she continues, ”I think, at this moment in time, the real direction is all

about soft curation and putting together a mix of mid-century modern, antique, contemporary and custom – people are really wanting to stamp their personalities on their interiors and I think, more and more, the design brands and furniture houses are listening to that.” The brands she likes to work with “changes day-to-day”, she admits. “I love working with Donghia, one of my favourite furniture brands, and Rubelli fabrics from Italy. I also love doing custom pieces and I work with a fantastic company in the UK called Christopher Clarke. In terms of lighting, I love everything from Porta Romana to stunning Baccarat chandeliers.”

And, finally, I can’t help but ask the woman who makes other people’s property

wishes come true what her own dream project would be. “My own mansion,” she says, after a moment or two. “Where? It would have to be in Dublin. In Ireland we have a lot of beautiful old period houses and I think working with the stunning architecture, the beautiful old moldings and fireplaces, then bringing in contemporary twists with big kitchen-cum-living spaces, and working with beautiful art, curating antiques but then mixing them up with really comfortable upholstery… really just what I love, which is layering and bringing in lots of personality and character to a room.” It sounds pretty perfect to me. LociFive months ago nobody had every heard of Khatt by Loci. It didn’t exist. Since then, however, the entrepreneurial idea has been born, made, patented and then showcased at Dubai’s most luxurious – and international – design exhibition, Downtown Design, and is causing a stir amongst designers and fashionistas alike.

Khatt is a clothes hanger like no other. Designed for the local dress code, the stand expertly holds the kandura, ghutra, abaya and sheilah that Emiratis wear on a daily basis. That’s why this design is so remarkable – it caters to a daily need, yet one that has never been met before.

“Everyone is using hangers that are coming from a foreign supplier and not specifically designed for local dress, so there was a big gap in the market for this product,” says Hani Fallaha, one half of the Jordanian-Emirati duo that co-founded Loci and co-designed Khatt.

“With Khatt you can hang three abayas on it without any folding; you have lots of space to hang the ghutra; and you have a tray where you can put your mobile, keys and perfume. We also wanted a design that is elegant yet simple so you can place it in the living room, bedroom or majlis.”

While Jordanian Fallaha demonstrates Khatt dressed in dark jeans and a black shirt, it’s his Emirati business partner Hamad Khoory who knows what a difference such a product will make in the UAE. The duo launched Loci, an architecture and design practice based in Business Bay, three years ago and Khatt is their first foray into product design. It won’t be their last though, and they already have plans to launch a series of regional wardrobe systems in the Khatt collection.

Designed and made in the UAE, Khatt harnesses local materials, customs and traditions as well as the dress code. It has a minimalist approach, made from wood, leather and brushed stainless steel, which comes together thanks to the skilled artisans in joineries in Al Quoz.

“There are good platforms for emerging designers and locally made products here, and support from local businesses,” says Fallaha. “The international market is taking notice of regional designers, and hopefully it will be even more responsive in the next couple of years.”

The Emirati fine-artist-turned-furniture designer debuted her first concept earlier this year and has already won a tonne of admirers, both in Dubai and further afield – 4,366 miles away to be exact.

Earlier this year the talented mother-of-two launched her Braided seating collection at Design Days Dubai and it’s since been showcased across the UAE and in London. With neon green upholstery, a mysteriously seamless design, contemporary look and local angle, her chairs and sofas are eye-catching, tactile and intriguing.

“The response from Design Days was amazing,” recalls Saeed. “People were really interested in how it was made and the concept behind it; how we used materials and manufacturing from within the region to create these pieces and that manufacturing furniture is actually possible here.”

After the event, Dubai Design District (d3) commissioned Braided to be displayed at Cityscape’s exhibition in the city, and

started the ball rolling towards showcasing at the Wallpaper* Middle East Revealed exhibition in London six months later. Here, she rubbed shoulders with Middle East design icons, such as Nada Debs and Khalid Shafar, across a two-week festival of design.

“At Cityscape, Braided was actually used as a sofa rather than a design piece and the fact that people were sitting on it and using it was great,” she comments. “The design is inspired by my childhood memories of my mother braiding my hair, and when I spoke about this in London people couldn’t see how it is so cultural and traditional because it is also very contemporary, which is amazing for me.

“The international audiences, who aren’t so familiar with Middle East design, were surprised and interested and I felt it opened up their eyes to the region and the business opportunities here. It is amazing that the Middle East is starting to have a design voice and the opportunities are so fantastic at the moment.”

Throughout all this, the designer has been supported by the art organisation Tashkeel and by small upholstery factories in Al Quoz. Braided is created from ‘tubes’ of cotton filled with lightweight synthetic material, upholstered in a traditional way onto a wooden frame. It’s a time-consuming process, which is essential for the high-quality, international standards Saeed wants to achieve.

“The set of parameters that designers have to respond to in terms of the environment, use of materials and traditions are completely different in the Middle East [compared to the West and East],” reflects Anabelle de Gersigny, strategy and partnership development manager at Tashkeel. “There are also some parts of Emirati heritage and from the wider region that remain unknown to the outsider and untapped, so it’s exciting to see designers on our programme really harness these and shed light on age-old processes and designs that reflect and build on the past.”

Khalid ShafarOne of the country’s well known names on the design scene, Khalid Shafar, hasn’t forgotten his humble beginnings as a first-time designer. In between exhibitions, solo shows and commissions he is also an inspiration for those relatively new to their burgeoning career, like Latifa Saeed. The Dubai-born designer is staying true to his roots, holding workshops and mentoring exhibitors at Design Days 2015.

“It is such a privilege to have him speak to us and explain the scene,” comments Saaed. “This industry is not just about designing, it’s also about the press, the business, exhibiting, marketing, finances… When someone has been there and tried it they can give you their insight, which makes it easier.”

In the last few years Shafar has travelled the world as a guest designer and speaker. More recently, Kartell asked Shafar and nine other regional designers to reinterpret Ferruccio Laviani’s iconic Bourgie table lamp, as part of a worldwide tour. Commissions like his quirky Headless Horse cabinet for Moissonnier (which reinvented the classic cabinet with the saddles and uniforms – not to mention tails – of Godolphin’s famous racing horses, Dubai Millennium and Rewilding), and his collaboration with Carwan Gallery (which saw him create a chair harnessing the country’s rich pearl industry) have earned him this international reputation. Nevertheless, Shafar wasn’t always in this profession.

“It was always my long-term personal and professional goal to be a designer but marketing was my first career choice,” says the designer, whose Kasa showroom can be found in Ras Al Khor. “Academically, I am a combination of both disciplines. To design furniture was a passion I developed while doing my interior design degree but I don’t regret my corporate life at all. It taught me discipline, management skills and leadership.

“My vision is to document the history of UAE design through my creations and preserve its culture and heritage through my designs and the stories they tell. As Baccarat celebrates 250 years of virtuosity in glass, we explore the history of the world’s most celebrated crystal maker

KING OF CRYSTAL

The soft hum of conversation and gentle clink of crystal has been the backdrop to elaborate banquets and intimate dinner parties for centuries. At the centre of such

celebrations is Baccarat, the world’s finest crystal ware. It has shone at banquets at the Elysée Palace since the late 19th century, with champagne flutes from the Juvisy stemware set, and at dinner parties held by Aristotle Onassis on his yacht, with goblets engraved with the legendary shipping magnate’s initials.

Established in 1764 by decree of King Louis XV, Baccarat is renowned for its sparkle, craftsmanship and refined elegance. To mark its 250th anniversary,

the French maison has produced a sumptuous new coffee-table tome. Published by Rizzoli and authored by Laurence Benaïm and Murray Moss, the book features 400 photographs and previously unpublished drawings from the archives, showcasing over 300 pieces, including sublime works of art from the 19th century and cutting-edge contemporary interpretations.

The maison has also launched an extensive retrospective at the Petit Palais museum in Paris, which allows design aficionados to witness the creations first-hand. Some 500 pieces are on display, mostly from Baccarat’s own private collection and rounded off by loans from the collections of the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay and Louis XV’s Château de Compiègne, among others. Highlights

include a series of majestic chandeliers, the most monumental of them gleaming, quite fittingly, with 250 lights.

Both projects are lavish tributes to a brand whose history mirrors that of French craftsmanship, technological progress and passion for excellence. Originally established as a glassworks in the village of Baccarat in the Lorraine region of eastern France, the company produced windowpanes and mirrors until 1816 when industrialist Aimé-Gabriel d’Artigues transformed it into a crystal glassworks.

Baccarat received its first royal commission in 1823 when Louis XVIII ordered a bespoke set of stemware. Kings Charles X and Louis-Philippe would soon follow suit. The Harcourt service, commissioned by Louis-Philippe in 1840, was inspired by a ceremonial chalice and

engraved with the king’s monogram. The timeless shape and flat facet cut which magnifies the light in the crystal has made it the brand’s emblem and an international bestseller.

As kings, maharajas, tsars and sultans discovered the beauty of Baccarat during their grand tours of Europe, royal households around the world also commissioned glittering pieces, from furniture for Indian maharajahs to majestic chandeliers for the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, earning Baccarat the nickname the ‘cristal des rois’ (‘crystal of kings’).

The Great Exhibitions in Paris, meanwhile, provided an opportunity for Baccarat to dazzle the public. In 1855, among the monumental creations displayed were two towering vases of white agate ‘pâte-de-riz’ glass with vegetable motifs in chrysoprase agate glass, which earned Baccarat the Grand Medal of Honour in the glassware and ceramics category.

For the 1867 fair, Baccarat created the Simon vases, twin pieces whose decoration was inspired by the works of the painter Charles-Joseph Natoire. They represented an entire year of painstaking labour for the master engraver Jean-Baptiste Simon and remain the only Baccarat pieces signed by the craftsman who created them.

At the 1878 exhibition, meanwhile, Baccarat presented an extravagant candelabra made with 3,320 pieces of crystal. It later became known as the ‘Tsar’s

candelabra’ after it caught the eye of Tsar Nicholas II in 1896, who then ordered electrified versions for his palaces in St Petersburg. The ‘Russian furnace’ was constructed the same year, dedicated to making crystal for the Imperial Court.

Exports continued to grow throughout the 1880s, as Baccarat opened branches in India, Cuba, Argentina, Japan, Uruguay and Mexico City. Back home, in 1889 French President Émile Loubet selected the Juvisy stemware, with its flowing lozenge cut pattern decorated with a medallion engraved with the initials RF (for République Française), to adorn state banquets at the Elysée Palace, and it is still used to this day.

The new century brought bold changes for the brand. In 1907, Baccarat became the first crystal glassworks to create perfume bottles for companies such as Coty, Guerlain, Houbigant and Bourgeois. The most significant moment, however, would prove to be the arrival of Georges Chevalier, a graduate of the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, in 1916. Promoted to artistic director in

the 1920s – a position he held until the 1970s – Chevalier revolutionised Baccarat, modernising its look with pieces like the Jets d’Eau service and designing the first jewellery collection, the Louxor.

In the 1990s, the centuries-old firm began to collaborate with renowned designers such as Mathias, who created the first Rencontres collection, which was hugely successful. The next decade saw the maison expand its creative collaborations with artists such as modern design heavyweight Philippe Starck and fashion designer Kenzo Takada, and open its first lighting showroom in the Middle East in Dubai in 2013.

This year, as a tribute to its legendary artistic director, the maison has reissued several of Chevalier’s pieces, including the Cordon vase and Sun Clock, while jewellery designer Elie Top – a fan of Chevalier’s “uncluttered, radical style” – has reimagined the Louxor collection. Featuring a necklace that can be transformed into a tiara, a ring and earrings, the collection pays homage to Baccarat’s hallmark red, which is obtained

by the gradual fusion of clear crystal and 24-carat gold powder. It also highlights the expertise of Baccarat’s craftsmen, with the necklace taking more than 80 hours to complete.

In another nod to Chevalier’s genius, the maison has launched its first fragrance for eight years, Rouge 540, so-called because 540°C is the temperature molten crystal has to reach to transform into the brand’s signature colour. Based on a 1942 Chevalier design, creating a single diamond-cut bottle involves the work of around 20 craftsmen including three glassblowers, one cutter and three gilders. Appropriately, only 250 bottles will be created, priced at $4,800 for 100ml.

This anniversary year also marks a new chapter for the brand, with the opening of the first Baccarat Hotel & Residences in New York in Q4 this year. Located across

from MoMA, just off Fifth Avenue, 114 elegant guest rooms and 60 glamorous residences feature classic and reinvented pieces from the Baccarat collection, alongside contemporary art and Gilles et Boissier-designed interiors.

Yet, as always, it is the master craftsmen who remain at the heart of Baccarat. From father to son, generations of glassmakers, cutters, engravers and gilders have succeeded one another in the furnace rooms. Today, the Maître d’Art and his team of 22 ‘Meilleurs ouvriers de France’ (‘Best French Craftsmen’) are tasked with ensuring the unique art de vivre à la française, intimately linked to the Baccarat signature, lives on.Baccarat: Two Hundred and Fifty Years is available now from Rizzoli. When an art-collecting homeowner in London’s Holland Park called upon design studio Lawson Robb to create an interior that was “modern,

eclectic and personal”, the results were bound to be remarkable. “The design brief was to enhance the interior architecture as much as it was to coordinate the fine artworks,” says Lawson Robb co-founder, Alix Lawson. “The house is the home of a private client who has travelled extensively. As such, their home was to be a backdrop, giving space and platform to their international artworks [masterpieces by both established and emerging contemporary artists such as Iranian painter Bita Vakili and Syrian artist Diana Al-Hadid] referencing their international experiences. As a result, textures and themes are varied yet carefully coordinated, blending lacquered surfaces with granular texture, linear and geometric shapes with curves and crescents.”

In terms of colourways, Lawson, and fellow co-founder Charlotte Robb, kept it simple and incorporated elements from said collection, with tailor-made furnishings offsetting the striking tones of the wall-mounted paintings perfectly. “Because the artwork was so colourful, we used relatively neutral, but layered textures and finishes within that,” says Lawson. “We had to pay particular attention to the movement of the sun around the house and position the artwork accordingly so as to be out of harmful direct rays and also away from direct view.”

Principal materials included wool silk fabrics, lacquer, mirror, and natural textures such as wood and marble. “The softness of velvets and silks were paired

THE SOFTNESS OF VELVETS AND SILKS WERE PAIRED WITH HONED STONE FLOORING

with honed stone flooring and lacquered cabinetry to create a tactile bridge between the two surfaces,” adds Lawson. “Natural wood flooring and metal detailing in specially commissioned pieces of furniture and lighting [think Christopher Wray Iverson’s crystal chandelier and Moooi’s spherical Raymond chandelier] united the interior with the streetscape.”

Like the artwork, the beauty of the property’s location, a row of exclusive 19th-century stucco-fronted houses in Kensington, played a pivotal role in the interiors. “The area was originally a private estate with many of the houses retaining their manorial grandeur,” says the designer. “As such the interiors reflect the original purpose of the building as a private home while acknowledging its central location within a thriving capital city.”

Best of all, though, the client loved it. “The client was so delighted with the end result,” concludes Lawson. “They were delivered their dream home which also showcased their artwork immaculately.”

About the designersWho knew that a chance meeting at London’s Inchbald School of Design would lead to the emergence of one of London’s leading design studios? Alix Lawson and Charlotte Robb hadn’t a clue. Upon graduation, in 2000, the then twenty-something-year-old interiors enthusiasts joined separate design firms before reuniting three years later to form Lawson Robb. Present day, and the design duo has racked up an enviable client list, with projects ranging from hotels and private homes, to yachts and embassies. Their luxury fixtures hop from wellness spas and cigar rooms to swimming pools that transform into dance floors, while services cover architecture through to planning and listed building consent. lawsonrobb.com

Fascinating pictures of Audrey Hepburn, by the photographer that knew her best, have been collected for a new coffee-table book, capturing the

qualities that made her a star

There’s something about

A U D R E YEvery leading man that she worked with fell in love with her, with no exception,” explains Dorothy Willoughby, the wife of late Hollywood photographer Bob

Willoughby, on the subject of Audrey Hepburn, one of her husband’s many subjects during his career. “That’s how it was with Bill Holden, on the set of Paris When It Sizzles, and again with Albert Finney on Two For the Road.”

There may be some truth behind Dorothy’s statement, as even Cary Grant, who starred alongside Hepburn in 1963’s Charade, once said: “All I want for Christmas is another picture with Audrey Hepburn.” Perhaps he should have given Bob a call, as while the chances of him and Grant having crossed paths is high – with Willoughby a firm fixture on movie sets for two decades, reporting for a host of glossy magazines – he had formed a particularly close friendship with Hepburn, documenting her career and getting to know her family. A new book, Audrey Hepburn: Photographs 1953-1966 by Bob Willoughby, published by Taschen, collects many of the images from that time.

Bob was actually one of the first people that Hepburn met when she arrived in Hollywood. It was 1953, and after some success on Broadway, she had completed her first major film, Roman Holiday, for which she would earn a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and

an Oscar. Director William Wyler had initially been reluctant to cast her, preferring a more established actress, but was soon won over. “She had everything I was looking for: charm, innocence and talent,” he said.

Hepburn’s co-star, Gregory Peck, was likewise impressed. Originally his name was to have top billing, with ‘Introducing Audrey Hepburn’ below the title in a smaller font. However, Peck quickly convinced Wyler otherwise, and that both names should be treated equally. “You’ve got to change that because she’ll be a big star and I’ll look like a big jerk,” was his argument. So Hepburn was already displaying the charm that would enrapture her leading men, and Paramount Pictures had so much faith in her that it had drawn up a seven-picture contract. To boost her profile, it had arranged a photo shoot at its studios, announcing the arrival of this great new actress. Bob was given the assignment, as his son, Chris, explains. “He was working freelance for Globe Photos at the time, and would get sent over to the studios every so often to cover the new starlets coming in,” he says. “Bob went to Paramount, and that’s when he took the shots of Audrey in the big white dress. It would be photos of her in different outfits, meeting the heads of the studio, people like Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, that sort of thing.”

She may not have been well known, but there was something about Hepburn that Bob was instantly struck by. “She was funny and energetic, and the thing that my dad said he noticed was how the studio and the other actors treated her – not like a newbie,

Page 40: Sotheby's In Residence Dec-Jan'15

38

ART

but as someone who was important,” Chris continues. “She had that presence about her. With other starlets, you could always see how nervous and taken aback they were.”

Since his father passed away in late 2009, Chris has managed the Bob Willoughby Estate, liaising with publishers and galleries, and of course relating the many stories that were told to him over the years. He explains how Hepburn’s appeal was infectious and seemed to grow in line with her career. On returning to Broadway briefly to star in Ondine, she won the heart of her co-star, Mel Ferrer, and the two married in 1954. Just four years later, he would direct his wife in Green Mansions (1958), and when it was time for production photos to be taken for the press, Bob again got the call.

“Audrey plays a girl who grew up in the forest, and Anthony Perkins is the traveller who falls in love with her,” says Chris. “There are a couple of interesting photos from that, like the shot of Perkins and Hepburn talking on set between takes and she looks kind of down. She had a lot of problems with her

weight and would get really low energy, so they had to take a lot of breaks. But Perkins was great with her about it, really relaxed, and it made for a comfortable and easy set.”

Hepburn’s issues with her weight and eating habits are well documented, dating back to her youth, living in the Netherlands during WWII when in was occupied by the Germans. Food supplies were limited, leading to the Dutch famine of 1944 and nurturing the actress’s caring side, becoming an ambassador for UNICEF in her later life. It seems ironic that the other favourite image from that time shows Hepburn in a supermarket. “Notice the little deer in the shot,” laughs Chris. “In the movie, Audrey’s character had a pet deer, so it had to bond with her, and the only way to do that was to spend time with it when they weren’t filming – it went everywhere with her, to the supermarket, shopping for clothes, for ice cream, and so on. There are pictures of her with it at home, holding it, running around the yard with it… all very cute.”

Working on set with Hepburn and her husband, Bob was now becoming a close friend. He had married by this stage himself, and would work with

the couple at their home. “He photographed their Christmas card for them, and there was a shoot he did of Audrey exercising in her garden wearing a red body suit for a magazine,” Chris confirms. But then he reveals one occasion that made them even closer. “I actually share a birthday with Audrey’s son, Sean,” Chris admits. “My mother and Audrey were pregnant at the same time, and also in the hospital, so that was quite a coincidence.”

Bob’s wife, Dorothy, remembers how their acquaintance continued. “When it was Chris and Sean’s first birthday, she invited Bob and I over to her house, and my mother, so that we could all celebrate together,” she recalls. “That was a lovely day, in the house and the garden, and we had birthday cake, and she was just the nicest lady you could ever meet. She doted on Sean very much, and it was a lovely house in Beverly Hills, with a big garden and a swing set.”

When Dorothy gave birth to her second child years later, her daughter Catherine, Hepburn sent flowers and a note to the hospital. She never had another child herself during her marriage to Mel Ferrer, and the two would divorce years later. Instead she continued to work, often with Bob and his camera nearby, meeting up again on The Children’s Hour (1961), Paris When It Sizzles (1962), My Fair Lady (1964) and Two For the Road (1967).

Chris jokes that had his father been on the set of her most iconic film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), the resulting royalties from the photos would have made them rich, but consoles himself that he was at least present for her other famous role in My Fair Lady. “That was her first big-budget film, and she was very nervous,” Chris explains. “They created all of these huge sets, but one of my favourite shots is actually at the press junket, prior to shooting. She was brought out to the gathered press, and my father was never going to settle for the same shot as everyone else, so he walks behind her and shouts, ‘Hey Audrey!’ And she turns, she is nervous, but sees a friendly face and everything is okay again. And he takes her picture as she is being photographed.”

Towards the end of the decade, Hepburn had become disillusioned about Hollywood and decided to spend more time away from it. She married psychiatrist Andrea Dotti in 1969 and had another son, Luca, but would work much less frequently. Around the same time, Bob also decided to leave and moved with his family to Ireland. Chris explains that his father believed Hollywood had a dark side and, despite his friendship with Hepburn, always planned to keep his children from it. He argues that Hepburn’s reasons for leaving were slightly different. “I think

1. “Audrey getting into the studio car at the end of the day. Just a great shot, the swoop of the car, the poised moment and everything. She looks a little tired.”

2. “One of my favourite pictures, from My Fair Lady, she is being introduced here at the press junket, prior to shooting…”

3. “This is her out shopping in Beverly Hills. On Green Mansions, she played this little wood nymph and she had this little deer, this little fawn that would follow her around, and the only way to get it to do that was to imprint on her, or get the fawn to imprint on Audrey. So before production, they gave her this deer, and it went everywhere with her.”

because of her weight issues, by the time she did Two For the Road she looked a lot older than she was, and everything was taking its toll,” Chris adds.

Hepburn died in 1993 from cancer, years after her second marriage had ended, living with her partner, Dutch actor Robert Wolders. Throughout her life, she had never been without attention or companionship, with male actors and film studios all fighting for more of her time. She may be gone, but in part due the tireless work and friendship she experienced with a certain Hollywood photographer, thankfully will never be forgotten. Audrey Hepburn: Photographs 1953-1966 by Bob Willoughby is out now, published by Taschen, as an oversized limited edition with clamshell box for $1,000, or a new smaller version costing $40. taschen.com

Audi R8 LMXThe now-venerable Audi R8 has been nothing but a success story for the German marque, and it earns its final hurrah with this, the LMX model. Many of the updates are superficial, like the Audi exclusive customised paint finish known as ‘Ara Blue’, and an extra 20bhp has been squeezed out of the 5.2 litre V10 engine, bringing the total up to an impressive 562bhp and a top speed of 320km/h. But its real kicker lies in the headlights – it’s the world’s first production car to feature laser high beams. If this seems a little gimmicky, who cares? The R8 has earned its final moment in the sun. And with only 99 of these LMX models being built, it might even be a good investment before the new R8 is reportedly unveiled next year. The 99 models are available to order now (if you’re quick), and the LMX will take to the streets mid-2015.

On December 11 and 12, Sotheby’s New York will present the auction 175 Masterworks To Celebrate 175 Years Of Photography: Property from Joy

of Giving Something Foundation. This single-owner sale represents the most important collection of photographs in private hands today, and will offer works from the earliest days of photography in the 1840s to contemporary 21st-century images.

Born in America in 1926, Howard Stein became wealthy through working in finance, and would go on to become one of the fathers of the mutual fund industry. After his retirement in 1996, Stein became an even greater philanthropist than he had been throughout his career, and in 1999 set up the Joy of Giving Something, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to his love of the photographic arts. Photographs from the foundation are regularly made available as loans to major museums around the world, and the 2007 opening of the Forward Thinking Museum provides a virtual space for emerging visual artists.

Stein, a naturally shy and quiet man, became interested in photography when he realised how it could sit alongside his other two loves; science and the arts. He was particularly interested in photography as an art form, as opposed to merely a method of capturing an image. As one of the earliest collectors of photography, Stein had a head start on many of his contemporaries and was able to build an archive unparalleled by anyone else on the planet.

The philanthropist, who died in 2011, left behind a collection containing work from seminal practitioners including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, William Eggleston and Irving Penn among many others, and the Sotheby’s sale is expected to shatter the estimate of $13-20 million, with all profits going directly to the Joy of Giving Something Foundation.

Denise Bethel, chairman of Sotheby’s Photographs, says: “A world without photographs is now unimaginable.

In the 175 years since photography first appeared, we have witnessed the remarkable achievement of this medium. Initially a recording device, photography quickly became, even in its early years, artistic, expressive, and profound. Its

The first commercially available equipment for photography was released

in 1839, based on the work of Louis Daguerre. His “daguerreotype” process, based on metal, was

soon superseded by the paper-based processes developed by Henry Fox Talbot. Stein’s collection contains some of Talbot’s incredibly early work, and the mere thought of these images being produced by hand, over 170 years ago,

is truly thrilling for any collector of photography. Christopher Mahoney, head of Sotheby’s Photographs department, says of the exhibition: “We have never before encountered a collection in which the quality of the images, in terms of vision and craft, is so high. From photographs by some of the earliest practitioners of the 19th century, such as William Henry Fox Talbot and John Plumbe, Jr.; to Pictorialist masterworks by Alvin

technical one as well. Of course, Stieglitz’s work is found in Stein’s collection as well. And it wasn’t just pioneering photographers that Stein was interested in. His other great obsession was the future. He would regularly give speeches to young photographers and tell them to stop looking back at the past, and think only ahead, at the future to come.

The Joy of Giving Something

Foundation’s web-only Forward Thinking Museum is testament to Stein’s vision of the future, but for now all eyes are on his collection from the past – and the most thrilling sale of photographs in the history of the medium. By 1907, commercially available colour photography was becoming ever more popular. Alfred Stieglitz, one of the earliest proponents of photography as an art form, began taking iconic images of New York City, which are not only fascinating from a sociological viewpoint, but from a

THE 118 RESIDENCES

Downtown Dubai has been given an architectural boost with the development of The 118 Residences, an elegant residential tower offering an unparalleled style of living for the discerning few.

Overseen by Dubai-based development company, Signature Estates Limited, and represented by Dubai Sotheby’s

International Realty, The 118 occupies a 37,000 Sq.Ft. plot sited a stone’s throw from The Dubai Mall. Once completed, units will range from full-floor apartments to duplex penthouse abodes (of

which only three are available), with on-site amenities extending from a 4,000 Sq.Ft. rooftop lounge and pool to a sumptuous spa and state-of-the-art gymnasium.

The interiors, spearheaded by Hirsh Bedner Associates, are as spectacular as the exterior, masterminded by design firm Archgroup Consultants, with two finishing styles available to buyers – the Signature Classic and Contemporary. The former comprises curvilinear designs in a warmer palette and marble flooring throughout, while the latter features rectilinear forms in cooler pantones with a combination of parquet flooring and marble.

Both unit types are designed as four-bedroom domiciles, but can be transformed into three-bedroom residences based upon personal preferences and desires. The interior elements, meanwhile, include floor-to-ceiling windows, which act like picture frames for the view of Downtown Dubai, and exquisite Italian marble throughout. Innovative bathrooms fixtures by Kohler are paired beautifully with freestanding bathtubs, leaving it up to the SieMatic-fitted kitchen and accompanying cabinetry to shape the heart of the home – the kitchen. The large terraces, walk-in wardrobes and Illuminate lighting fixtures only add to the luxury found at The 118.

Each residence is also allocated with three parking spaces and ‘chauffeur accommodation’, while the concierge is supported by doormen and valet for additional convenience and anonymity.

In addition to the aforementioned premium facilities, residents get full access to an array of private dining and event spaces such as the 20,000 Sq.Ft. poolside deck, accommodating up to 100 guests, or a more intimate rooftop venue.

“The unique thing about the project is that it’s got luxury in every sense – space, volume, height,” says Raju Shroff, partner at Signature Estates Limited. “The 118 Downtown Residences are targeted toward top-end buyers who appreciate

the value of space, focus on the attention to detail and appreciate quality finishes.”

And, according to Shroff, the location, just off Emaar Boulevard, which is arguably Dubai’s most prestigious strip, is equally beguiling. “The area boasts unrivalled views with the desired metropolitan chic buzz, nearby high-end nightlife, and great conveniencee. It’s unrivaled.”

THE UNIQUE THING IS THAT THE 118 IS LUXURY IN EVERY SENSE

The Cannon Brewery originated in the early 1670s and its oldest surviving building is the former Brewery Yard Offices. This was erected directly behind the old main entrance around 1874. Built of soft red brick with stone dressings, with an ogee-capped turret and bracket clock, it is a wonderful building with a proud history.
