    BREGUET

    At the core of the May auction will be a section entirely

    dedicated to the celebrated French watch and clockmaker,

    Breguet anabsolutereference intheworldofhorologyfor

    the past two centuries. Comprised of 45 timepieces dating

    from1785

    to

    1997,

    this

    section

    reflects

    the

    constant

    search

    for innovation and the distinguished style that has

    characterisedBreguetsproductionsincethe18thcentury.

    Watchmaker to the European monarchs as well as the

    scientific,military,financialanddiplomaticelitesofhistime,

    AbrahamLouis Breguet (17471823) designed exceptional

    timepieces for prestigious clients including King Louis XVI,

    QueenMarieAntoinette,Napolon,theTsarAlexanderIand

    CarolineMurat,QueenofNaples,forwhohefamouslyconceivedtheworldsfirstwristwatchin1810.

    TestamenttoBreguetsprestigeandreputationamongtheeliteof

    the 18th and 19th centuries, the auction will present a large

    selectionofantiqueclocksandpocketwatches,mostofthemwith

    importantprovenance.Leading thisgroupare twocarriageclocks

    describedin

    the

    Breguet

    archives

    as

    Pendules

    Almanach.

    The

    first,alargegiltbrassgrandeetpetitesonnerie,quarterrepeating

    carriageclock(No.3145)wasdeliveredin1825for6,000francs,an

    astronomicalpriceatthetime,reflectingtheoutstandingqualityof

    thispiece (lot 365, est.CHF 350,000450,000/ $385,000495,000,

    illustrated above). One of the largest models of travelling clocks

    madebythewatchmaker, it is identicaltoaclocksoldtheQueen

    of

    Spain

    in

    1831.

    Thesecond,anexceptionallysmallgiltbrassquarter repeating carriageclock (No.2497)wassold in1810to

    Prince Camillio Borghese Aldobrandini (17751832), a descendant of the illustrious Florentine family and the

    secondhusbandofNapolonssister,PaulineBonaparte(lot364,est.CHF250,000350,000/$275,000385,000,

    Knownas theWatchmakerofKingsandthekingofthewatchmakers,Breguet

    received pocket watch commissions from numerousmembers of the European

    Hourietsconsiderable influenceontheworkofhis

    students and their successors is illustrated by

    THETOURBILLON

    Asectionofthesalewillbededicatedtoaninventionthatrevolutionisedmodern

    horology: the tourbillon,developedbyAbrahamLouisBreguet in1795 tonullify

    theeffectsofgravityinpocketwatchesandincreasetheirprecision.Theevolution

    ofthetourbillonoverthepasttwocenturiesisillustratedinthecataloguebyrare

    timepieces, including an 18 carat yellow gold openfaced keyless chronometer

    watchmadein1882bytheLondonhorologist,S.Smith&Son(lot179,est.CHF

    15,00025,000/ $16,50027,500). This watch is equipped with what is almost

    certainly the firstof theNo.239seriesofKarruselwithadetentchronometer

    escapement, a device patented in 1893 by the Danish watchmaker Bahne

    Bonniksentoaugmenttherobustnessandaccuracyofthetourbillonregulator.

    In the early 1920s, the German horologist Alfred Helwig invented what is now

    commonly known as the flying tourbillon. In 1931, together with his student

    Woldemar Fleck,he produced a silver openfaced keyless pocket chronometer

    with flying tourbillon which will be offered for sale with an estimate of CHF
