We’re an extremely passionate brand and we just love our clothes. We share this passion with anyone who mourns a worn out T-shirt like the passing of their own brother. This is a way of life and at some point we all realise that our favourite T-shirt needs to be replaced and this is where we come in. We supply clothing that is traceable and the material is created from our organic bamboo and organic cotton. Here at Sostena we pride ourselves on being honest and sustainable, we don’t just offer you our new clothes. We offer a new way of thinking, a beautiful concept, an undying passion that is fuelled by the environment we live in and the fabric that we wrap ourselves in.

SOY BEANS TO BE EXACT

All of the inks that we use at Sostena are sustainable. Soy ink is a kind of ink made from soy beans. As opposed to traditional petroleum based ink, soy based ink is more environmentally friendly, might provide more accurate colours, and makes it easier to recycle paper. That sound good to us.

THIS IS SOSTENA

We don’t think that you can ever beet an old pair of scuffed up vans, the more holes the better. To us, sustainability means thinking about a brands’ environmental impact, a product’s lifespan, it’s supply chain transparency and social responsibility. But what does that all mean in the context of our customers’ everyday lives?

Did you know that each year in the UK we consume and dispose of 1.1m tonnes of clothes? 48% of this is re-used and 14% recycled while the remainder winds up in landfill (31%) or incinerated (7%). Some large fashion retailers are known to produce up to 300 new styles per week. Thankfully the UK is now waking up to the realities of this so called ‘fast-fashion’. For many of us, our outfits have become disposable objects; use once or twice and then discard to the back of the wardrobe along with other long-forgotten “must have” items. How is it that we have bought so much, yet have nothing to wear or show for it?

Our indulgence with bulk buying and trend chasing has left us with wildly confused wardrobes and our environment (and our wallets) are suffering the consequences. Sustainable fashion in the past has been perceived as the hippy alternative to mainstream fashion. It’s now starting to be about recycling, up cycling, vintage or is it about buying different models or styles. We know that style is inherently personal; we believe that our clothes are an extension of ourselves. The morning commute to work provides a gallery of different fashion choices made that morning by every individual.

A plain tee is the perfect blank canvas to create ourselves around no matter what our age or lifestyle. A high-quality baseline upon which we can build a look that truly reflects our personalities and ethics. This isn’t about being ‘on trend’ as much as clothing that delves deeper than the surface.

So on reflection if our customers see us as making great tees rather than ‘sustainable fashion’ that’s fine. Responsibility within manufacturing should just be a given throughout the fashion industry. This is why here at Sostena we have created simple t-shirts with powerful messages. We want to spread the word that sustainable fashion is the way forward and we hope you can help us to this.

We here at Sostena have accepted the task of creating a new sustainable range, being totally honest within our business. We have nothing to hide behind, customers can literally see through our company and we want to remain this way.

OUR VIEW ON SUSTAINABLE FASHIONSOSTENAWHAT WE THINK

Page 14: Sostena Clothing catalogue

15

The mainstream method of cultivating cotton has a major impact on the environment. There is a huge potential for improving the situation and choosing organically grown fabric is one way of making a difference. In order for fabrics such as cotton in particular, the fields where it is farmed must be totally free from pesticides for a period of three years. All of the fabric that we use is spun, dyed and finished in accordance to with organic procedures.

When is comes to Sostena, organic fabric is not just a seasonal fashion trend. We have higher aims than that, we have aimed to have all of our collections made from organic material and we are achieving that.

We choose to use one of the words most sustainable resources for most of our products which can grow up to a metre a day in the right conditions. We are talking about bamboo. Bamboo gives us clean air to breathe, consumes carbon dioxide and, because bamboo forests are so dense, returns 30% more oxygen to the atmosphere than trees. It also takes less energy to grow and sustain bamboo than other similar trees and plants used for fibre production and the bamboo plantations require very little maintenance. Bamboo also requires very little water and can survive drought conditions as well as flooding.

One of the best aspects of bamboo is that it doesn’t have to be up rooted to be harvest, it is cut like grass. This means that it does not damage the soil its grown in and actually purifies the soil from any toxins. Bamboo can be grown without pesticides or chemicals because of it’s own anti-bacterial agent and is 100% Biodegradable, so no more landfill.

We do not envisage a trade-off between profit and people, or between manufacture and environmental responsibility. These issues are major factors in our choice of suppliers. As with most other clothing brands, we so not actually own the factories in which our clothing is made. However, together with these garment factories, we bear the responsibility to provide a safe, fair and ethical working environment for all the people who are involved in the manufacture of our clothes.

We work together with only a handful of partners, all of whom are required to comply with our code of conduct. Our membership of Fair Wear Foundation is a key element ensuring that everyone across the production chain works under fair conditions

All the fibres in any garment can each react differently when treated with stain removal products and during laundering, that’s why were giving you these east and simple steps to looking after your Sostena products.

If you are unfortunate enough to get a stain on your new T-shirt then fear not, its not a disaster. Our bamboo is notable for its soft feel and natural antibacterial properties. But our fibres can be weakened by chlorine bleach, so if necessary, try and use an oxygen-based bleach to remove such stains. Remember unless heavily stained, use cold water and a gentle wash cycle for cleaning the fabric. For heavy stains, use warm water and allow clothing to pre-soak to remove excess soil. Never use hot water, this may cause shrinking.

For the best results air dry or line dry. High dryer heat can also shrink clothing; use low heat cycle if necessary for quicker drying. Extremely high temperatures when ironing can scorch bamboo fibres. The scorching or yellowing occurs as the fibres begin to burn. Burned fibres cannot be revived. If ironing is necessary, use a dry iron (no steam) at a low setting. Remember, be careful and keep it cool.

TRACEABILITY FROM SEED TO SHOP

Our bamboo is grown and processed in China, then shipped to the Fair Wear factory Coimbatore, India where it awaits the arrival of our organic cotton. The cotton fields are located in and around Ahmedebad, India. The cotton is picked by hand and transported by camel and cart to the town. Its then picked up and transported to the Fair Wear factory in Coimbatore via Truck. The cotton is then ginned and the bamboo fibres and cotton is mixed together, 70% bamboo, 30% organic cotton. The material is then cut and sewn within the factory, where it gets most of its energy from solar power, which is sustainable and eco-friendly.

These Garments are then shipped from Coimbatore to Felixstowe, UK. They are then trucked by high capacity lorry to Cornwall where the design is applied and hand finished with trims and labels made locally.

Fabric made from bamboo is incredibly soft, smooth and luxuriously comfortable. It also helps absorb and evaporate our sweat within a split second. Bamboo fabric is also highly breathable in hot weather and also keeps you significantly warmer in the cold than other fabrics.

Another advantage with bamboo is that bacteria do not live well within it. So it will not smell, even after many days. This helps the fabric to sit well with your skin, not clinging to it. If you have sensitive or allergy prone skin, guess what bamboo is perfect; it’s also anti-fungal. Countless people say it’s the only solution they’ve found for problematic skin. The unique properties of bamboo clothing make it perfect for an incredibly wide range of activities, from an expedition to skiing to the gym. If you’re adventuring in the Alps or on a beach holiday or at home, it’s one of the most comfortable and versatile options available.

SOSTENABAMBOO IS BETTER FOR YOU

Page 27: Sostena Clothing catalogue

THIS IS SOSTENA

70% BAMBOO VISCOUS, 30% ORGANIC COTTON

The growth cycle of bamboo is honestly utterly sustainable. As a source material for clothing it’s revolutionary because bamboo thrives naturally without using any pesticides or fertilizers. Bamboo fibre is 100% biodegradable and it is also the fastest growing plant in the world and it spreads rapidly across large desolate areas. The size of the yield from an acre of bamboo is 10 times greater than the yield you get from cotton and it requires far less water, usually it survives from what falls from the heavens.

Bamboo grows on hill slopes where nothing else is viable and because it’s a grass it’s cut, rather than uprooted, helping soil stability. In contrast synthetic performance fabrics are made from petrochemicals, a non-renewable fossil fuel. They are used in the process to help clothes which would usually smell rapidly. Clothing made from bamboo is nature’s answer to our needs for everyday fabrics.
